Jonas Lundqvist - Du, Drömmar & Jag (2011)

Comment: Jonas Lundqvist`s ditty Du, Drömmar & Jag emerges warm feelings within me while drawing on bouncy and elastic rhythm structure, some suggestive transformative seconds and high-pitched vocal delivery. Eventually the result seems to be fairly magical because of showcasing organic and robotic knacks at the same time. By listening to it through a span of 285 seconds the single puts in the mind of such dance-appealed post-punk/punk funk dinosaurs as The Pop Group, and Gang of Four, and New Order. However, Lundqvist does have its own idiosyncratic twist on it (for instance, by singing in Swedish it chimes in a quite exotic way). The single came out of the album Så e de me de.         

Gnouli Monsters - Hi (2008)

Comment:  Nick Grover aka Gnouli Monster`s album Hi was one of the first swallows (26th in queue) released under the do-it-yourself label Rack & Ruin curated by the Netherlands residing Englishman Dean Birkett. These 13 tracks extended over 34 minutes will constitute a fine listening experience where some quite ordinary lo-fi/bedroom drenched pop progressions are moderately variegated with more experimental approaches where the artist`s instrumental music is infused with electronic manipulation acts, singing variations and poignant sonic effects or just exploiting some sorts of synthesised syncopation to create more electronic pop/and chillwave resembling templates. In a word, the listener shall have to find out the proper knack across the tracks and moody balance within the album. The album seems to be a grower.       

Piss On Authority / SLUG - Echoes Of The Past Reverberate into Our Future (2014)

Comment: if you feel bored of arty post-punk aesthetics (or something like that) but still ready to continue with similarly categorized music then I recommend listen to this split of different kind of punk rock. POA and Slug provide an unembellished kind of hirsute punk torrents directly cutting to the chase by handling societal and political shortages based on egoism and lies of the politicians and readiness to preserve the status quo of recent political system. Furthermore, the artists hint at the fact that the systems used to dominate over individuals and it does not make sense at all who govern on the top over us. Pessimistic yet actual, isn`t?

Comment: behind this project are the original line-up members of ¡para!helion whose miscellany of 13 pieces casts light upon some tendencies being actual in the United States at the moment or recent past. It embraces a shitloads of curious experiments in the realm of rock and folk music. It can be considered a pop music though being a distinctly peripheral one. More concretely, it spans disparate genres extending from folksy roots music to distorted guitar backed spoken word snippets and jazz and world music relied improvisations. The combo is related to such blog as Pen & Mallet which is a source to discover a lot of new bands additionally (Aboombong, Dustdevil & Crow, Blotter, Psychic Enemies Network and some more groups besides).        


Raymundo Mendoza – Translations EP (2010)

Comment: listen to it…let`s dance following  El Paso, Texas, US-based Mendoza`s sultry house and techno drenched rhythms accentuated with subtle electronic effects, hypnotic debris, spooky echoes from parallel-aligned world and semi chords of vague syllables. The EP seems to start off from nowhere thereafter rhythmic sequences do dilate and blossom stepwise though having no clear-cut centre and defined focus. However, such sort of conception is the source of appeal of club dance music as if having no identity and name. In a word, it is cerebral and limb centred at the same time.     

The Shimmer Effect – Mechanosensitive (2013)

Comment: actually I do have some problems to catch at the quintessence of this album because it chimes in a sultry, beatific (almost psychedelic) way straggling and coming together as a whole of repeated cycles relentlessly. It sounds almost like “live” music though the sounds represented over there used to be processed with electronic devices and sequencers. It might be nowadays New Age music saturated with exuberant rhythms and blissful spaced-out aesthetics. Or is it a kind of psychedelic ambient music full of flickering chords and motives? The rhythms are juxtaposed against blossoming sonic glimpses to root, extend and make an impression. The result is magniloquent and deep enough at the same time.      



Elbee – Visions Of Vactrols (2014)

Comment: Lloyd Barrett aka Elbee reveals his craftiness to scan different sonic pallettes and realms. Actually it is quite puzzling to find out the word to describe this dizzying whole. More concretely, it is replete with an innumerable amount of twists and dodges – from world music and New Age inspired breezes to more dark hued electro and alien-like breakbeat outfits, from cerebral yet catchy techno propulsions to compelling electronic appearances. At times the cadence is deliberately downshifted to create even more confusing, spaced-out feeling. However, the issue will be finished off with The Indexilarm Dimension which chimes like a modern classical piece created by the cyborgs. In a word, it is a great work released on Wood & Wire.

Comment: DavidKBD is a musician from Pamplona, Basque country, Spain whose 7-track album is a seamless amalgamation of videogame flickers and bombastic metal music. More concretely, it consists of progressive metal guitar riffs, rapid key changes in the vein of fusion music, and blistering shells of electronic synth rock. On the other side, actually the issue involves only few videogame samples – it might be a little bit confusing but not being drawback. The outlet is highly energetic, synergic and thereby convincing throughout its chameleon-like course. Let`s enjoy it.

Comment: it is not surprising at all that Christian Montoya can produce flawless music. For instance, the EP under the title Brooklyn 2 Brooklyn was one of the best issues in 2014 (produced under the moniker Miami Slice). The recent release includes 5 notches which were made entirely with KORG DS10+ for Nintendo DS. Indeed, game boy-like acidic electro coated layers are interlaced with some house propulsions. It is insulting and delicate, dance-appealed and brain drenched at the same time. Obviously Montoya does dig inspiration out of old house tunes, Italo disco catchiness and Detroit electro scene. In a nutshell, the result is prominent.   

owt kri- - White Glaciers (2014)

Comment: owt kri is an artist from Helsinki, Finland whose 4-track issue is an example of abrasive ambient and borderline space rock and glowering drone music. By listening to it this will open up a new sonic world and some more obscure dimensions to music lovers. It embraces loads of sonic reverberations, distorted guitar chord progressions and menacing metallic patterns full of depth and flickering shadows. It chimes like the incantation of a stoned shaman standing on the ruins of a brick building after the narrative of industrial world was irreversibly collapsed. It will sift across the listener`s nerve channels and vessels. Highly intriguing.

Matt Pond PA - The Freeep (2008)

Comment: Matt Pond PA is a collective from New York (with the Philly origin, though), USA who have been active since 1998 and related to such well-known labels as BMG, and Polyvinyl. Alongside with Wilco, Band Of Horses, Bon Iver, Iron & Wine, Van Dyke Parks they are prominent representatives indie rock/folk music being obviously influenced by the US traditional (roots) music (country, bluegrass, folk). This EP of 9 tracks sounds quite traditionally having few experimentation courses within the whole. However, in spite of it the issue used to chirp in an organic, unconstrained way. Actually all the melodic and harmonic elements which are needed to constitute decent pop songs are represented over there. #3 could be considered as the experimental track on it due to progressions within the ambient/space music and minimal music narrative playing with chord delays and suggestive repetitions. Eventually it can be said the album contains solid songs from the starting point to the end. Recommended.            

Non Dolet - Nameless Lake (2014)

Comment: Non Dolet is a musician from Russia whose sophomore album ( the follow-up to I Hold The Sun 2013) used to converge at a crossroad of naive yet cute toytronic progressions, more thoughtful modern classical insights and even a light-hearted version of post-rock explorations. On the other side, despite the album`s simplicity the tonality within it seems to be thoroughly doleful as if there were an object hidden somewhere while she is yearning for it so much. If there will be a lake just discovered it would be dubbed as "Dolet". By kindred sould there can be drawn comparisons with the likes of Lullatone, Possimiste, Oskar Schuster, for instance.       

Joxfield ProjeX - Archives EP5 Dark Pitch (2013)

Comment: Joxfield ProjeX is a duo from Sweden whose members Oax, and Yan started to make music already in the 60s. They gained some popularity at the end of 00s and in the beginning of 10s while releasing a handful of albums under Clinical Archive, the most popular record label at Archive.org. Furthermore, some of these albums were assisted by such progressive rock music legends as Pat Mastoletto, and Geoff Leigh and electronic musician Kenji Siratori. I am very glad they are still very prolific because Dark Pitch is a part of the EP series. It involves 4 tracks depicting the duo`s keenness to craftily master distortion-heavy, wah effect-induced guitar rides with bold, motorik big beat rhythms. Despite its towering propulsive nature the EP sounds almost like a static one due to the repetition of motives and phrases. The result is a dance-appealed avant-garde fusion with nods toward psychedelic world. There can be drawn comparisons with the 70s in Germany and the end of 80s and beginning of 90s in Manchester (and with some groups outside it like Flowered Up, The Telescopes, and The Wordsmiths, for instance). In a word, it is a modern yet natural, highly energized rock propulsion. It is without being fake, it is without being hammy. Joxfield ProjeX is still one of the most outstanding combos worldwide.     

Wacky Southern Current - In a Realm of Uncertain Summer (2011)

Comment: No-Source is a popular US-based record label whose discography embraces musical groups being involved in exploring indie electronic music. Wacky Southern Current`s 9-track issue used to shift somewhere in between picturesque ambient rock hovers, electronic undercurrents and epic chamber rock and post-rock sensuality. Although the music is instrumental it is replete with pastel hues, warm chords and emotive progressions. At times when music is more diluted it sound like a branch of Ennio Morricone`s music (for instance, Evertide). Marco Cervellin`s one-man-project from Italy proves how essential is to produce music in the countryside just being alone with your imaginations, thoughts and instruments.

Comment: whooaahh, it is a beatific pop album made up of electronic sounds which in turn are built upon delicate rhythms, sensual vocal flickers, alien-alike vocal delivery, and seductive melody progressions. In fact, it is very shameful that this 8-track collaborative release has not reached a mainstream status yet – actually all the best elements available in music are scraped on it – getting inspieration from the 70`s space disco/and dance appealed electro rock (a la Space, and Ganymed), 90`s French electronic club and electronic pop culture ( a la St Germain, Daft Punk, Air). The album involves a remix by United Kingdom based artist N.S.J.

Comment: The Montrèal-based collective Tracer Flares` used to have much more cultural references and layers than it may prove at first glance. They go along the path of soft rock being popularized by Keane in the middle of 00s; on the other side, it often reveal slightly darker sides thereby harking back to the tradition of post-punk and gothic rock music of the 70s and 80s in Great Britain. Furthermore, they are deliberately bombastic at full heart, showing up an inclination of pop culture to exaggerate its premises and foundations. Additionally, it is a matter of fact the collective is adept in creating great pop songs. So get it and enjoy it.                  

The Love Songs – Live in Dresden (2008)

Comment: The Love Songs is the one-man-orchestra of Sven Swift, a netaudio enthusiast and promoter from Germany. This 25-minute live was performed at the DIY 2.0 festival in Dresden replete with droning spans, crucial changes and accelerated ja decelerated effects superimposed on the sustained lengthy chords. The issue starts off with introduction to the gig venue filled with the crowd`s speaking and the alarms of a police car coming out of the street. It will soon be replaced by Swift`s performance to the defeating ending.  

Doc THUMP - New Greensleaves (2011)

Comment: Buffalo-based Doc THUMP`s 74 seconds are represented over there to bring forth a peculiar, primitive version of a very well-known song. The beatific and longing melody line is crossed with angular rhythms and noisy chord progressions. The issue is a part of the discography of We Hongry Records. The cover print is fairly sympathetic due to a cute, green ghoul standing nearby the fridge. In a nutshell, the result is nostalgic and soul touching thanks to the track`s clumsy appearance

Alexander Zaitsev & Jelena Glazova - Live @ Taiga 2014 (2014)

Comment: Zaitsev-Glazova`s 26-minute set consists of experiments with electronic sounds, noise and droning monoliths. At the first glance it seemed a little bit monotonous by its nature but affording many listening time the result used to reveal many previously hidden effects and tiny details within its body. More concretely, many of them are deliberately semi-shadowed or brought to the front, some of them used to merge with other sound into something unclassifiable somehow reminding of boreal sounds as if coming directly from the nature. The result is captivating upon the listener is immersed in it.               

Nick Rivera – Zamalek (2013)

Comment: Zamalek is the follow-up to the album Happy Song Is A Happy Song (2010, La bél). One of the main differences between those issues is the Italian artist`s close flirtation toward more noisy sounds and transformations from silent moments to ferocious bursts very quickly. On the other side, Nick Rivera has not abandoned his branded mellow songwriting touch with lofty sonic experimentation (mainly electronic micro noise wisps and sublime orchestration here and there) being abundantly represented on this 7-track release as well. Furthermore, the issue involves some fairly epic moments replete with magic splendour (The Beast, for instance). The album was issued on La bèl, a record label from Italy dedicated to issue folk tinged experimental pop music.   

Dwoogie - Babble Off (2012)

Comment: behind the nom de plume Dwoogie produces music Robin Gill who has made it for more than two decades so far. Babble Off consists of a row of breaks combined with hovering (or brooding conversely) synth sounds and production effects (less or more twisted vocal samples and scratches). More concretely, there are represented psychedelic trance beats and electro flickers, some of them used to sound quite laid back, some of them are full of vivid energy and unexpected bursts. There are also represented some hints at dub and robot pop music. In general, the album could be considered a part of sampledelic music being so popular today. The album is issued under Ergo Phizmiz`s record label Chinstrap. Eventually it can be said the result is balanced and varicoloured.

Totuls - Open Held Doors (2014)

Comment: actually it is a quite puzzling enterprise to describe this album of 10 tracks coming in at 32 minutes. The general point of the issue is to create a tension between wispy, fragile upper layers and loosely rhythmical inferior sequences. More profoundly, the former of them is remarkably more differentiated due to airy piano chords which used to extend and hover after being tapped out. John Winston Richards also provides slightly sinister synth progressions interwoven with eerie electro-acoustic manipulation and buried noisy bits and murky echoes and mid-range buzzing sounds. There are also wispy yet angelic vowel fabrics giving it a more spaced-out approach and touch. If to regard the rhythm based pads it used to mainly rotate around twisted drum and bass/jungle alike bounces. In a word, it is a crossed issue of different yet not very distant genres resulting in exciting combinations of sound and initial premises. The issue is a part of  PIR▲.MD Records, a Mexico based record label.

Comment: in fact, it is hardly classifiable music on its own because the artist`s purpose is to deliberately contort possible initial sources and premises laid out to create this 12-track issue. However, if to listen to it you can hear some hints at Americana and roots music which in turn are crossed with provocative dadaist`s ethos. More concretely, those layers are injected with uncanny flickers and, acute electronic bursts and noisy interventions. Furthermore, the listener can perceive spaced-out and delta bluesy compositions as well, though, witnessing serious aesthetical “injuries” and errors within it. Frequently vocal layers are twisted in a way to create a perception of alternative belonging or disparate world colliding with each other. This album is strongly out of pop. Provoking yet enthralling made up by the duo Matt Heitman and Danny Barton from Missouri, USA. There can be drawn parallels upon such artists as Captain Beefheart, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Royal Trux, and The Residents. But  make no mistake the duo`s sound is highly idiosyncratic.                     


The Starry Tides - One Lit Window EP (2006)

Comment:  The Starry Tides is the project of David Merson Hess who is also known as film music composer. It is a peculiar issue because of involving tracks being not longer than 3 minutes (the whole finishes off at 10.41). On the other side, it is a sort of post-rock music which tends to meander within many minutes from its starting point. Frequently guitar sounds are embellished with glitch electronic noises, vivid spoken samples (from the film scores?). By the way, the album is issued on his own record label Reverse Engine. In a word, the result is moody and revealing its abundant supply of fantasies.

.Khi -I Had A Dream (2007)

Comment: there are up six tracks extending over 22 minutes. .Khi is the project by Hugo Murutar, an Estonian producer whose dream is quite multi-faceted. It is mainly electro-based although heavily infiltrated with noisy undercurrents and disparate sonic debris, occult chants, and tweaked sonic manipulations. Thanks to multiple and unexpected changes (i.e collage-like nature) the whole seems to have saturated a feral feeling which is fairly positive and giving it a particular feeling. At times those electro propulsions are highly catchy (Let`s Jam!), at times remarkably minimal, haunting and stalking. Eventually it can be said the result is mind-provoking and cool.            

ZGERSS - In the Labratory of a Nationally Known Scientist (2009)

Comment: Zachary "Zgress" Gresser is a musician from Arlington, USA who had been a part of Rack And Ruin Records, a DIY/bedroom pop music record label from the Netherlands.  The label`s discography embraced such artists as Gnomefoam, Megazord, starstarstar, Chad Golda, Tyson Brinacombe, Dublin Duck Dispensary, Teacups, Witchporn, Vlantis Urotanki, Moon Runners, Hungry Owl…and many other ones. ZGRESS` 9-track issue is a loose blend of chill out/moody pop, autotuned soul hovers, some digital funk chips and some gently improvised music progressions which frequently will conjure nostalgic sensations and intentions to look back toward the past. On the other side, there are some exceptions either – for instance, the ending track Return Home which is an instrumental indie progression with slight hints at funk music. The introduction of Soft Songs is a beatific glimpse through the exploitation of ambient music templates. Ad Hoc is an instrumental piano driven interlude. By the way, I like the ironical title of the album and poignant coverprint. In a word, discover the album and the rest of Rack And Ruin`s discography which was a corroborant dodge within the DIY/lo-fi inclined underground music movement at the end of 00s and in the beginning of 10s. 

Morphine Bandit - Subtle Shift Theory (2013)

Comment: Morphine Bandit`s 6-track issue might seem quite austere and minimal at the first glance. The album starts off with signal-like drones which chimes almost like static noise. Later on, the issue will be slightly softened and change into abstract insights which is embellished with concomitant subtle rhythms at times. The tentacles of an eerie metallic machine used to extend across the soundscapes to carve its traces. However, by theoretical and psychoacoustic standpoint the album involves remarkably more elements – how the listener will perceive this issue? What kind of sounds used to actually exist on the album and what sort of sounds are generated by the listener`s ear? What kind of music is that actually represented on the album? Indeed, Subtle Shift Theory used to alter the listener`s perceptions throughout this course because of exploiting those very minimal changes. Very good.

Radiator Hospital – Some Distant Moon (2012)

Comment: Philadelphia-based quartet Radiator Hospital`s 4-track issue emits pure energy and artsy power getting power from nexus of the best rock and roll traditions. This issue consists of short-running rushes replete with “lazy” singing, rolling soul guitar dashes, and elegantly propulsive drums. In spite of representing music within a simple formula it comprises enough minor points at first sight which would have made up the release. I like of how the combo is deft to properly balance between power pop impulses and remarkably lighter, even psychedelic pads. You could enjoy it to be on the board of this steam ship.    

Quattroannidiversi – ViVeriVive (2015)

Comment: ViVeriVive is an Italian record label who has recommended many Italian artists with disparate aesthetic interests and impulses to the world. However, this compilation of seven tracks by seven musical projects is more guitar and drum-heavy and many artists on it used to draw influences from seminal art punk, post-punk, and No Wave scenes. On the other side, some tracks on it are more restrained and folk-inclined ones. It is thought-provoking music performed in Italian. The are such artists as Zinalbo, Faro, Gio Fattoruso, Reazione Acustica, Rudolfo Toè, Il Nostro Tempo Violento, and Lullabier.   

Ripple – Land Crocodile (2014)

Comment: Ripple is the nom de plume of Daniel Craig, an Australian producer whose 4-track issue does embark on with heavy stereo effects and intricate rhythm patterns as if were a counterpoint to mathematical formulas. The rhythm patterns used to melt into blobs to lose its angular shape and thereafter re-solidify again into incisive cadent sequences. Later on, the aforementioned elements will be compounded with some aquatic, atmospheric and noisy sounds. At times the listener can enjoy artificial quacks hovering atop altered beats. Because of getting more multi-layered the result will be changed into fairly playful and amusing. You can feel a funky essence within it at times. Although it is thoroughly rhythmic music it is obviously not thought to be presented for playing on dance floors. Although it can be considered an example of intelligent dance music it does not mean it is totally a part of the style called with such title because of remarkably deviating from it. It might sound slightly paradoxically but it seems in this way. Highly pleasurable.

Twisted Freak – We Play With Time (2014)

Comment: Twisted Freak is a Portuguese musician Josè Silva whose 8-track issue is a wondrous listening experience. It could have been a prominent dance music album if some accents would have been presented a little bit differently. It could have been a prominent nu jazz album if it would have resorted to more languid sonic peals. In a word, the release involves many sonic spots and figures to reveal its huge possibility. However, the actual issue is bigger than its possibilities, though. More concretely, sultry dub induced echoes and spaced-out soundscapes are crossed with slinky techno rhythms which would have resulted in suggestive electronic pop alike compositions at times (Come Mellow, Love Is Fine). The album will be finished off with an indie electronic refraction called Time: Perception.  In a nutshell, the result is amazing. It is a part of the discography of Zigur Artists.    

Totokoko Christmas Compilation 5 (2014)

Comment: actually it is never late to listen to Totokoko label related (Xmas) compilations because music represented over there has no time related barriers. The compilation reflects upon the Japanese label`s sonorous nature – from soothing indie electronic and folk related programmed music to more IDM and modern classical centred compositions. Some songs are embellished with field recording/electro-acoustic shells. Despite their predominantly glitchy body nine artists/compositions inhabited over there will reveal their sensitive soul and warm-riddled heart. More concretely, there are up such projects as Henri Almond, Morimoto Naoki, OOOQ, Mitsuyoshi Matsuda, Shayou, Junya Nishimura, Koji Maruyama, and Ryosuke Miyata (ex.Miche). Enjoy modern Xmas songs.  

XO - Diccionario De Silencio (2014)

Comment: XO is an artist from Santiago De Compostela, Spain whose 10-track album used to represent exquisite grids and synapses regarding artsy folk music. It is mostly saturated with dream-filled singing made up in a longing manner. It includes a shitloads of key changes, thought-provoking variations and intriguing tones thereby resembling some grand Americana combos. However, at times some exceptions are up there to arise from the whole – some funky propulsions, shadowy post-rock induced guitar escalations, concrete music shards. In any cases, XO demonstrates to us that modern (folk) music can be tasteful and corroborant simultaneously. It is not a case of ad hoc folk. It is a bridge between silence and still life.

Weinberger – Shades Of Bewilderment (2014)

Comment: the Austrian musician Johannes Leo Weinberger is not a nonsense man. I can remember for the first time when my way crossed with his compositions (the album Memorial from the year 2013 on Petroglyph). The artist`s outlet seemed to be restrained and artsy yet being highly abrasive at the same time. However, this issue is remarkably more deranged and wonky replete with an innumerable amount of dodges, polyrhythms and hints at different musical compartments and epochs. The result is truly weird and out of pop while elevating higher the listener`s blood pressure. There is up one track where he deconstructs a very well-known melody/theme. However, I guess it is nonsensical to count all these elements represented within this whole. You just must have listened to it.          

Tinyfolk – Black Bears (2010)

Comment: by listening to this album it can be said Russ Woods aka Tinyfolk has grown up sometime. On the other side, it does not mean at all that his previous albums were somehow inferior in quality. His 13-track album involves many mellow modern folk songs saturated with panoramic longing, full-fledged dreams, irony and many philosophical stances regarding life in general. The arrangements are thought and soul provoking and organic ones by exploiting different motives and instruments – from cinematically strumming guitars and ukuleles to visceral vowel backgrounds, reverb-driven yet restrained noise pop numbers (Amygdala) and electronic compositions (particularly fabulous Hello, This Is Tech Support). Russ Woods` vocal is frequently immersed in melancholy thereby giving it an irresistible reflection. By any means, it is a great album by the CLLCT related singer-songwriter/indie folk musician. The album is recorded and produced by another prominent CLLCT bound musician and co-Pretty Swan Jim Laczkowski (aka Garden On A Trampoline aka James Eric).
