Nicolas Tourney – Ram (2020)

  • Ambient
  • Minimalism
  • Drone
  • Microtonal
  • Ambient drone
  • Sound art
  • Electronic music
  • Abstract
  • Avant-garde
  • Organic electronica
  • Musique concrète

Comment: at the time of searching for a teaser track for the blog from the French composer, imprint owner and blogger Nicolas Tourney's brand new one Ram I was inclined sensually to find out just one track called Bluebeard. However, having been listened to the 15-track outing many times in a row I can admit it to be a great one. Indeed, it is about tonality and microscopic sensuality within broadening and narrowing swathes of exquisite sound. Lots of used to happen in reality and a listener's mind or being inseparably intertwined with one another. It is like a wondrous universe with stable arrangement of sonic elements and little changes coming in and moving outside. Wavering quietude is compellingly represented throughout the course there. Less is more on the base of this issue. The release is a part of the discography of Batenim.

Marco Lucchi – Kosmische (2016)

  • Drone
  • Minimalism
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Kosmische Musik
  • Ambient drone
  • Microtonal

Comment: this album consists of a couple of compositions by the prolific Modena-based, Italian artist Marco Lucchi. Yeah, (re)discover his albums through Bandcamp, and Archive.org! One of those tracks on Kosmische reaches a 65 minute, the other one does a 5 minute. In general, the outing is subjugated to minimal progressions and microscopic touches yet all the drones represented over there seem to be craftily spiritualised and purified from any possible excessive burden. Indeed, all is poignantly focused and magnified into new qualities. More profoundly, one can hear slightly vibrant cathedral-alike colours within the drones at times being embellished with faint reverberant voices as if the metaphor of fading memories. It is imbued with feelings being somehow ennobling and sad at the same time. It is like a rootless floating in Outer Space a billions of miles away from pillaged Earth because the human being was not able to change its economic course and first of all its devastating life style as the very reason of it. The music is dedicated to Florian Fricke (1944-2001), a Krautrock/Kosmische Musik juggernaut being the leader of Popol Vuh. The highly recommended outing is a part of the discography of Batenim.

Cousin Silas – Memories Of A Journey (2016)

  • Ambient
  • Soundscape
  • Microtonal
  • Drone
  • Minimalism
  • Avant-garde
  • Kosmische Musik
  • Experimentalism
  • Space music
  • Ambient rock
  • Ambient drone
  • Guitar ambient
  • Post-classical

Comment: the 60-year-old Englishman David Hughes aka Cousin Silas is being known as a guitarist who likes to create (and extend) soundscapes for wide and broad and profound. He has been a prolific artist whose number of works in frequency can only be compared with an Israeli artist, Wings Of An Angel. Despite the minimal nature of work his soundscapes seem to be filled in with an internal burning as if longing for something out of reach. One can move toward it yet one can never catch it. In a word, it is intimidating and appealing at the same time. Secondly, despite the minimal nature of work all the changes to have appeared during this long-running course conjure up tectonic changes in the listener's mood and imagination. Not only guitars have been managed to play tricks on a listener's mood and mind but also superficial dissonant flickers and beatific vibrations add a drift into another direction. At One Note it is not stylistically far away from such a genius as Robert Fripp. After such an issue it can be admitted the genius nature of David Hughes. By kindred souls it can also be drawn comparisons with such artists as Bing Satellites, Riccardo Cirani, Drew Miller aka Brother Saturn, Gaetano Fontanazza, Nick Nightingale, Stephen Briggs. This superb audio photograph is a part of the discography of the Batenim Netlabel.

Whalt Thisney – WalkThisWay (2019)

  • Modern classical
  • Post-classical
  • Ambient
  • Art music
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Piano music
  • Glitchtronica
  • Post-industrial

Comment: this handful of tracks is obviously one of the best albums I have heard in 2019 so far. Of course, it is not thoroughly innovative from scratch but the grid and substance and the ultimate impact of the album will haunt you even after you have finished dealing with it. The impact comes out from minutiae of the issue. Glitched-out abrasive microscopic noises sweeping around gentle slope of the piano built sonic mountains and exuberant atmospheric reverberations being steeped with dystopic industrial hisses do build up a magnificent whole. The listener can enjoy the immersive pace of the issue and easy impressionistic climaxes based on the aforementioned elements and fragile volatile piano chords as if a stunning example of meta polyphonic musical concept. It is a glorious part of the discography of Batenim Netlabel.

Morphine Bandit - Subtle Shift Theory (2013)

/Abstract, Ambient, Micronoise, Experimentalism, Minimalism, Experimental electronica, Drone, Sound art, Ambient drone, Post-industrial, Avant-garde, Crossover/

Comment: Morphine Bandit`s 6-track issue might seem quite austere and minimal at the first glance. The album starts off with signal-like drones which chimes almost like static noise. Later on, the issue will be slightly softened and change into abstract insights which is embellished with concomitant subtle rhythms at times. The tentacles of an eerie metallic machine used to extend across the soundscapes to carve its traces. However, by theoretical and psychoacoustic standpoint the album involves remarkably more elements – how the listener will perceive this issue? What kind of sounds used to actually exist on the album and what sort of sounds are generated by the listener`s ear? What kind of music is that actually represented on the album? Indeed, Subtle Shift Theory used to alter the listener`s perceptions throughout this course because of exploiting those very minimal changes. Very good.

Csillagköd – Elements of The World (2014)

  • Ambient
  • Neoclassical
  • Ambient techno
  • Mood music
  • Soundscapes

Comment: Transylvania-born 32-year old Olivér Dombi`s 4-track issue is a wondrous glimpse into the wonderful world of ambient and spherical music. More profoundly, his music consists of shimmering, glockenspiel-alike sampled chords hovering atop and is boosted by some techno vibes underneath. Because of being so volatile and fragile Dombi`s sound could be considered a sort of mood music either. Only Neutroncsillag demonstrates a more glowering, neoclassical-tinged approach. In a nutshell, despite following narrow stylistic borders the result is striking and unforgettable.

Morphine Bandit - Subtle Shift Theory (2013)

9.5

/Drone, Ambient drone, Experimentalism, Avant-garde, Sound art, Avant-electronica, Experimental electronica/

Comment: Less is more. This batch of 6 lengthy compositions is up there to create enough expressive visual outlets and fantasy-rich visions. For instance, you can imagine moderate burning somewhere which is dubbed with fluorescent droning. Indeed, the result is restrained but intense in baleful manner  as if heralding some adverse events which will happen soon. The last track Alphanumeric provides more deranged, crunked-out bits and twitching impulses and experiments with striking phase changes. All in all, it is a great experience by the listener.
