The Pad Foundation – Variations On A Theme (2010)

  • IDM
  • Electronic music
  • Synth-pop
  • Mood music
  • Ambient pop
  • Chilltronica

Comment: these 47 minutes do create the impression of a cohesive release while listening to it the listener can feel common parts coming from one track and then transmitting into another. By the way, this is the method of this 9-track album by using one and the same element in different tracks, so it can be admitted it is an economical approach and effective result at the same time. On the other side, although one can perceive some commonness between the tracks there are also up disparate peaks. For instance, at Scotch Mist the track is built up on revolving piano chords, dreamy female vocal samples, and synthesised orchestrations and something else even more and all of that will be evolving and co-operating through the course in an irresistible manner. It is called synergy, isn't? The following track Elastoplast is remarkably more spastic and nervous – the beats are cut-up, and glitched-out yet being backed up by a beatific sloping upward. At times there are represented slight echoes, and vague sonic effects atop the algorithm of IDM-tinged rhythms. Undoubtedly it does not suffocate the spacey keenness of the release. It reminds me of some Estonian IDM/experimental electronic romantics like Uni, and Myrakaru for the beginning of the 00s. The issue is a part of the discography of Swishcotheque. Top slab.

Comment: the first contact of mine with an imprint called Swishcotheque happened to a release (Analog Gentleman) by Marko Sula aka Out-Or who was an idiosyncratic underground artist in Estonia during the 90s. Similarly to the compatriot of mine it is quite problematic to describe the nature of Telluric's self-titled issue. Because it is a mind-blowing issue the role of mine as music reviewer seems to be quite impotent. However, let's trying at least. First of all, it is the kind of electronic music for our pleasure. I guess it is based on certain patches of synthesisers. It is saturated with digital noises and incisive sonic effects sometimes to provoke one's thought and mood. Certainly it is inspired by trance music though in a psychedelic key. On the other side, the aesthetic of synthesiser induced music in its acidic and spacious format is apparently a predominant element within it. It is fairly emotive to enjoy how synthesised chords used to turn upward and then downward in an acidic sauce. Imagine an early Talk Talk or Heaven 17 to starkly be influenced by Tangerine Dream. The issue is a platform to seamlessly merge all these elements with one another. And there is artistic elegance up in the air because the final track Trill Cue is an irresistible earworm. Get afflicted with it. Stunning stuff by any means.

ion ghOST – And The Sky Fell (2012)

  • Electronic music
  • Breakcore
  • Breakbeat
  • Alternative
  • Drum and bass
  • Breaks
  • Alternative dance
  • Nu jazz
  • Synthwave

Comment: this 11-track issue is a part of the discography of Swishcotheque. It is as colourful and arousing and involves as much penumbras and shades as the cover print of the outing. In fact, it is quite puzzling to grasp the main flow of it because it includes the beats with different frequencies and disparate timbral suits and gleaming synthetic progressions on top of it. Because of that I would like to exploit such general stylistic tags as breakcore, and synthwave, respectively. The sensitivity of nu jazz, and nitid cadences. It might be that my question is posited in a wrong way because music needs no borders in any cases possible. Thereof it is almost impossible to say what it is but being a staggering release anyway. Additionally, one can enjoy more generic aspects on it – the clarity of sounds and subtlety with regard to the production. And that makes sense in the first place.

Out-Or - Analog Gentleman (2011)

9.2

/Tech-electro, Breaks, Robot pop, Jungle, Tech-house, Electro pop, Acid electro, Dub house, Club dance, Leftfield, Alternative/

Comment: Marko Sula aka Ataka aka Out-Or was being one of those producers/musicians with Lobsand Dorje, Hüpnosaurus, Von Suck, Flexus, Lu:k, Treee, Una Bomba who had been defining the Estonian underground electronica/dance music scene throughout the 90s. Although the time has passed by mercilessly his 11-track issue still consists of acid/cosmic electro and glossy robot-induced leftfield electronica propulsions, however, sometimes providing a spot on rattling jungle rhythms and laid back tech-house and dub house vibrations. Solid work.
