Flying Saucer Attack – Rural Psychedelia (1993)

Trip-hop`i päälinnast Bristolist pärit FSA oli kui kätt rusikas hoidvate kingapõrnitsejate salarühmitus, kellel armastus ja viha näisid käivat käsikäes liikumise põhivoolu suhtes. Kui mõned liikumises osalenud pundid otsisid lunastust ja väljapääsuteed tantsumuusikas ja elektroonikas, siis FSA keeras kitarridest tulevad mürakraanid veelgi enam valla, andes muusikale peaaegu et küünilise osutuse ja sarkastilise kommentaari. Indirokis tegi Jesus & The Mary Chain seda albumil "Psychocandy" aastaid varem, ent "Rural Psychedelia" meeltesse mürgi manustamise viis on hillitsetum, salalikum ja kokkuvõttes efektiivsem. Ühelt poolt on reeglid ning teisalt mitte. Ühelt poolt on üheselt mõistetavad kõrvulukustavad müravallid, milledes kobrutab ja kriibib; teisalt ühes loos võetakse vabajätsu vormel, et seda müraroki vormis täiendada. Päristrummid ei sobitu enam valemisse, kriipiv saksofon nõuab tablasid sulni tagasisidestatud müra foonil. Eks püüdku kuulaja seda endale lahti mõtestada! Heli liigub mõttest mitu sammu ees. Ei jäeta ka kingapõrnitsemisliikumise kirstunaelale – Britpopile – valusalt lajatamast. Suede'i hitt "The Drowners" paisatakse rokenrolli kõige kõledamatesse tormituultesse, et sealt efektselt õõva tilkudes välja joonistuda. See on märkus laiemale publikule, et ülessoojendatud Bowie asemel võinuks manustada krehvtisemat kraami. Seestunud psühhedeeliat, mis rikutud loomuse kiuste laiali ei lagune. Mass on rumal ja seda mõjutav (muusika)meedia veel lollim on nende ilmne sõnum. Kolmandaks liigutakse kidrade saatel – ent tuure maha keerates ja tämbreid abstraheerides – sfäärilistesse kõrgustesse, mille imelisust ruineerivad veelgi imetabasemad udupasunad ning ebatavalised rütmid ja metalli kriuksumine. Kõlaliselt lähedane Popol Vuh'i ja Ash Ra Tempel'i emotiivsete ruumipöörete- ja paisumistega. Eriline (post)punksuhtumisega kingapõrnitsemisalbum, mis vääri(nu)ks ajalooliselt kohta liikumise tippalbumite seas.

MOMUS – Timelord (1993)

Comment: as we know very well Nick Currie aka Momus shares his six albums (1987-1993) with us via Ubuweb being once released on a famous indie imprint, Creation Records, being also home for such seminal innovative indie rock luminaries as My Bloody Valentine, and Slowdive. Later on, it got home for Oasis but that's a different story (and not so crucial by the impact). In hindsight, Ubuweb is definitely a proper place for his churned-up oeuvre. In principle, Momus goes around like an ominous, academic version of Pet Shop Boys on one side dissecting borderline themes (or at least these ones the politically correct West is ridiculously supposed to have no talk about darker, seedy sides of the human being), sarcastic lyrics yet full of embarrasing sincerity, and on the other side being backed up by witty orchestrations and poignant synth-backed rhythmic treatments. The background of the issue was related to his relationship with a young woman of Bangladesh descent, Shazna Nessa. Obviously by the case the issue sounds to be more doleful, yearning and plunged in incantations of looking backwards and then forward. Given that as his swansong on Creation, it also fits to the thoughtful mood. Moz once sang /Life tends to come and go/That's okay/As long as you know/. Great.

Jane Siberry - When I Was A Boy (1993)

: Jane Siberry (born in 1955) is a Canadian pop diva who started off her career in the early of the 80`s and who had launched a couple of hit songs from this period either. However, Siberry is always being a little bit quirky musician who has crossbreeded more common and more unusual elements with each other mixing up synthetic, electronic kind of pop music with highly arty approach of classical and chamber music. By the attitude of her Siberry can be compared with the likes of Kirsty MacColl, Bjork, Lisa Gerrard, Kirsty Hawkshaw, and Kate Bush. The ladies who have frequently sacrified their possible economical benefits for substantive aesthetical approach and thanks to it to be more devotedly followed and honoured. At When I Was A Boy are represented her quintessential kind of notches which are variegated due to Siberry`s incessantly changing roles within it (being longing, dark-minded, carelessly chiming - all of that is done in a very spectacular way). A dozen of songs represented there are moody, slightly vulnerable and due to it highly enjoyable. The album which is considered to be the internationally most famous one of her is released under Siberry`s own Sheeba Records (initially on Reprise) and is available at her home site. Produced by Brain Eno, and Michael Brook. By the way, Siberry comes out from Guelph, Ontario, from the same town being home for such nowadays rising indie stars like Memoryhouse, and Mathemagic.

Jaap Blonk - The Splinks & BRAAXTAAL (1993/2011)

: my first experience related to Jaap Blonk`s oeuvre does hark back to 2004 when I did confer honour upon his collaboration with Maja Ratkje. The Dutch musician can be compared with such artists as Michael Schiefel, Meredith Monk, Laurie Anderson who are known by their vocal experiments/acrobatics. Here are uploaded 10 tracks, taken out from two albums The Splinks, and BRAAXTAAL (1993) both of them issued on the Kontrans records. There can be detected for dizzy grooves and acute experimentation by both sides, by Blonk and his co-musicians, respectively. Of course, Blonk`s sound is sophisticated and highly self-conscious based on within the frames of the academical avant-garde and jazz-relied improvisations. In a word, this is a legacy in the compartment of intriguing music.
