SUICIDAL MEDITATIONS – Suicidal Meditations (1990/2022)

  • Industrial music
  • Psycho-acoustic
  • Sound poetry
  • Experimentalism
  • Post-psychedelic
  • Noise
  • Avant-garde
  • Musique concréte
  • Minimalism
  • Rhythmic noise
  • Electro-acoustic

See 4-looline üllitis anti esmakordselt välja 1990ndal aastal. Tšehhi ja Slovakkia (st peamiselt Tšehhoslovakkia) industraal-, müra- ja raskema kõlaga eksperimentaalmuusikat koondav leibel CS Industrial 1982-2010 on asja üles leidnud ja taasavaldanud. Nüüd on lisandunud nimetatud plaadifirmale ka Noise Margin, jagades sageli ühiseid albumeid (selle vahega, et Noise Margin üllitab albumeid alatihti füüsilisel kujul). Metall ja klaas kliriseb, vaevatud hääled on koondatud põrgulikesse kordustesse, millest ei pääseta, vaid põletakse puhastustules kenasti lõpuni. Seda albumit võiks ka mõtestada varase Einstürzende Neubauten'i ja Steve Reich'i ristsugutisena. Kordustest tulenev intensiivsus ja metalse kõla raskepärasus ja üksteise selga kuhjumine annavad 4-loolisele iseloomu ja fookuse. Teisalt seda raskepärasust leevendab naturaalsus – meisterlikult, st nähtamatult põimitud konkreethelid-loomuliku heli kihid annavad teosele hingamise. Tõepoolest, väga veenev industriaalmuusika näide (lagunevast) idablokist; mille eesotsas oli sealne eksperimentaalmuusika käilakuju ja mõjuisik Jaroslav Palát.

The Hirundu – The Savage Crimes E.P (1990)

  • DIY
  • Lo-fi
  • Alternative rock
  • Avant-rock
  • Experimental rock
  • Psych-rock
  • Indie rock
  • Outsider
  • Jangle pop

Comment: Mark E. Smith and The Fall are being considered as true representatives of the underground rock movement. Although The Blackpool, UK-based John Crewdson-led project The Hirundu could be considered a doppelgänger of the Manchester legends yet they have represented something even more through since the end of the 80s. Stylistically they are more diverse and musically more hoarse and firsthand. This was their one of the first issues at all while they were being more guitar driven sounding as a demented, fucked-up blues influenced rock and roll act, the formula which was two decades earlier invented by Captain Beefheart. Strumming (indeed, reflecting upon then strong jangle pop influence – for instance, at I'll See You you could draw comparisons with McCarthy) and at times light-hearted propulsive guitars are set atop in the middle of buried singing and reversed sonic effects and inferior yet somehow stimulating tape hisses. The Blackpool-based combo's music consisting of four pieces is very elegant and irresistible in its lo-fi tinged approach. It is a very solid notch within their great legacy being issued under their own Pitch And Putt Records.

LA Screamin Popeyes - Save The Brainforest (1990)

/Avant-garde, Improvised music, Dada music, Synth pop, DIY, Field recording, Weird pop, Electronic pop, Art punk, Leftfield, Post-punk, Dance rock, Spoken word, Experimental pop/

Comment: thanks to this 9-track issue (the download version is zipped into the two lengthy tracks in total, though) I discovered a new platform for old, rarefied music, called The Living Archive of Underground Music which is curated by Don Campau. Indeed, it is time to discover amazing sonic examples from the past. First of all, I truly like the title of the album which was relevant many decades ago and is still today. By watching what is going to happen every day worldwide it is ridiculous and sad at the same instant. People make this shit happen to. Given that the singularity of human being used to diminish remarkably. Save The Brainforest reflects upon these deranged and oppressed tendencies excellently. In detail, it veers from robot-alike spoken word snippets and roughly processed guitar riff noises to psychedelic and orchestrated synth lines and such sort of improvised situations reminding of radio drama and sultry jungle encircled happenings. There are up some hilarious artsy (post-) punk and fucked-up synth pop/dance rock progressions either. Behind the project were Jeff Olson, and Carl Strong who recorded the issue on the 4-track tape machine set up on a kitchen table. With this fabulous issue the project did continue to uphold the Dadaist and obscure DIY tradition within the US-based music scene (The Residents, Big City Orchestra, Fantomas, Negativland, No-Neck Blues Band, Bob Chaos based imprint etc).
