Children of the Drone - St. Mary Arches, 04/05/11 (2011)

/Psych-folk, Avant-folk, Improvised music, Chamber folk, Ambient, Experimental folk, Downbeat, Drone folk, New Weird England, Dream folk/

Comment: Every new (and voluminous) appearance of this Foggy Albion-based combo (with some core members and loads of occasional members for every session) does have worth enough to pay huge attention to it. However, throughout the appearances on the two last albums/sessions (including the recent one which is recorded in a church) COTD has somewhat completed their obvious raga/ drone folk-based concept with some new sonic additions. For instance, the Exeterians` soundscape is evolved into more synthetic, exploiting more electronic devices (sampling units and low-end synths) for it and on the other side playing up jazz-hued (those saxophone-relied cool passages) and downbeat improvisations. The change is welcomed in any cases, moreover, as the combo have previously managed to maintain their profound approach for the progressions into the kinds of transcendental state of minds.

Comment: Children of the Drone is a coterie from Exeter, England whose music presentation way is to deliver it for free download - previously improvised in live. Their 14-track set is a sublime soundscape based on natural (ethnic) instruments-based arsenal and some electronics (synthesizer) full of solemn space-y reverberations and dreamy glimpses here and there. In principle the collective`s music can contingently be considered a part of the so-called New Weird movement, though, the set involves also their propensity to experiment within the confines of electro-acoustic, concrete music, jazz, world music and improvised music. By listening to them the listener can perceive unhurriedness to drift along. The favourite track of mine is The Lucid Dreamer because of having serious flirtation with noise music. In a word, the whole results in delivering of suggestive synergy. I recommend visit to COTD`s site and read about their way of looking at things (mostly at music and music industry, of course).

[Old but important] Children Of The Drone Compilation no. 8 (COTD)

In fact, the Exeter-based musical group of 10-20 members should be a legendary one, not only having some cult reputation among dedicated music lovers. COTD is through its line-up closely related to the other collectives and projects as well (for instance, A Tiny Window; Ail Fionn; Dongas The Tribe). Their soundscape is involved in hypnotic jam sessions, impressive pictures of art-y folk music, having the closeness to natural and organic soundscape and depthness inbetween and beyond the layers, playing up a lot of meditative psychedelic circuits, thereby constituting up as powerful uniqueness and intelligent variety finally. The array of Exetrians` instruments is similarly impressive one, including the music-oriented instruments, and artifacts as well. However, if you take some time to getting enjoyed them you shall have to reserve a couple of hours, because the most of sessions are up there into this tendency. And the UK-based collective is not limited to the sound conception only - I strongly recommend to you to visit their site and read their argumented views about many phenomena and manifestations (including music business). Let`s them speak and you'll definitely get some (self-) reflection.

Unlike the most of their experiments these are not usually filled in very surreal, darksided feedbacks and echo effects which by the side are injected with gorgeous mystical attitude. But it is the case of Compilation 8. You can meet some free form improvisations, electro-acoustic ambiences, and psychedelic sonic conceptions. And indeed, over a long period some low-end (and shamelessly undervalued) electronic keyboards and electronics/sampling units have been exploited. If Kemialliset Ystävät`s frontman Jan Anderzèn expressed once devout hope that his music would be in certain way to be related to the outer space having its very goal in this way while it can be said that obviously by Matthew Watkins` curated band sounds into the universe for sure. A seemingly simple journey on the one hand, it expresses a static (or in a minimal way sounding) sonic trance on the other hand, within the borders of the high-level articulatedness the progressions of sonic algorithms are getting even more visible with coming to the end. In fact, it does not create any kind of tensions or frictions while flowing into transcendental meditations. In a more concrete way, through comparisons, here is a link of kinship with Six Organs Of Admittance, and Spiritualized to be found, although, in a much deeper embodiment. An astonishingly deep stuff.

Obasquiat – #Drops (2019)

  • Drone
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Improvised music
  • World fusion
  • Field recording
  • Musique concrète

Comment: it may be the easiest way to describe this album through the examples of other artists' music, through such examples as Ashtray Navigations, Uton, Kemialliset Ystävät, Six Organs Of Admittance, Charalambides, Tont, Sam Shalabi, Natural Snow Buildings, Children Of The Drone, Vibracathedral Orchestra. More profoundly, the common thread of the aforementioned artists is droning. Droning through different aspects and accents, through ethnic and folk music of Asia (from Middle East to Hindustani peninsula), through modern day folk, through post-industrial and psychedelic angles and patches. Another common thread is improvisation. To put together drone and improvised music it can be summoned as experimental. One can see droning as the hard core of this 15-notch issue yet improvisation can be considered as the intention and thought of the whole. One can hear volatile clouds as experiments with concrete sounds and open spaces, voices and vowels which used to rotate inseparably around the hard core. The marvellous outing (the Brazilian Marco Antonio with his guest musicians) is a part of the discography of Sunyatha.

Children Of The Sun - Exeter Phoenix (2004)

/Ethno punk, Art-punk, Psychedelia, Conceptual, Psych-rock, Live recording, Live session, Covers/

Comment: Acoustic Hawkwind covers performed by an one-time project headed by Pok Spacegoat and assisted by some members of Children Of The Drone. Because of using the non-traditional rock instruments (saz, dilruba, balalaika, mandola) they have brought forth a unique kind of sound and attitude, however, by the project`s tone colours reminiscent apparently of the Exeter-based combo`s spacious raga-tuned/drone folk-ish warbles. On the other side, depending strictly on the concept, the format of the album is different, though - it is more sheer, high-tempered, psyched-out and heavily rocking in the psychedelic ethno punk tradition. A thankworthy enterprise indeed.

Tarred Brigade – HoneyMoon (2008)

  • Psych-rock
  • Weird folk
  • Americana
  • Free folk
  • DIY
  • Lo-fi
  • New Weird America
  • Psych-folk
  • Drone folk
  • Epic
  • Chamber folk
  • Blues

Comment: it makes no surprise altogether Tarred Brigade comes out from Baltimore, Maryland, USA because of representing either a second or a third wave of the New Weird America movement. For instance, all of us used to recognise the fact Animal Collective came initially out from this city though musically Tarred Brigade is a bit different, a bit more countryfied case. It is recorded on a 4-track recorder being rustic and majestic at the same time, being abrasive and hypnotic at the same time, being bucolic and solemn simultaneously. Its droning earnest halation being frequently mixed up with psychedelic templates may remind more of such combos as Espers, Six Organs Of Admittance, and Children Of The Drone (the last one is an improvisational combo from Exeter, UK). For sure, additionally to the aforementioned folk element there are also up certain indie facets and the downright Americana tradition. On the other side, at I Fear An Eclipse the listener can figure out a combo to be influenced by a British act called Penguin Cafe Orchestra. The only (format-based) problem is about the amount of the tracks represented over there. In my folder there are up 6 tracks in comparison to the amount of 4-tracks at Free Music Heroes (it is devoid of such compositions as Haunting the Majesties!, and My Jewish Blues). It might be these are the hidden ones while one is downloading the release. Outstanding issue in any cases.

The New Mystikal Troubadours - Second Spring (2011)

/Psych-folk, Trance rock, Experimental indie, Drone folk, Psychedelia, Avant-rock, Avant-folk, New Weird America, Free folk/

Comment: Second Spring is the duo Dave Gibson (Agrarians) & Matt Perzinski (Bad Liquor Pond)`s sophomore outing (after the self-titled debut album in 2009). Anyway, such kind of psychedelic (folk) music makes most of the times subtly out. No doubt, the duo is able to straddle diverse elements into a seamless blend of psychedelia, drone folk, and psych-folk. But you can get intoxicated on guitar strums and halo-like washes within and around it. In true, experimental folk seems to be their most but not just only realm to get steps into it. At times it reminds of the trance rock incantations by wizards like Jason Pierce (Spacemen 3; Spiritualized) and Peter Kember aka Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3; Experimental Audio Research; Spectrum) or warblely exorcized indie folk songs a la Animal Collective or contemplative drone folk groups like Children Of The Drone, and Natural Snow Buildings. In a nutshell, this is a highly synergic set of 12 tracks and it can be considered a manifesto for beauty in music and universally either. One of the best albums during 2011 so far - by this shamelessly underrated group.

Take Pills – Consumer Drones (2005)

  • Experimentalism
  • Electronic music
  • Krautrock
  • Motorik
  • Experimental electro
  • Minimal synth
  • Avant-garde

Comment: undoubtedly the US-based Andrew Cauthen was one of the most interesting artists along with Cagey House, Amitron 7, starstarstar, The Japanese Gum, Children Of The Drone and Joxfield ProjeX whom I had discovered while embarking on with my blog 10 years ago. The visual trademark of him used to be a bicycle on the cover print of every issue. Musically his sound is still mind-blowing, for example, the recent one is a convergence of krautrock-driven motorik beats a la Neu, and on the other side it is a mix of ambient plateaus and droning phases. In truth, he does away with guitars. Earlier, I guess, five years ago I would have considered it an example of pure electronic sound, however, today it chimes to my ears at least partly like a solid German experimental rock project from the 70s. Additionally to Neu! as already mentioned above the minimalist influences by Konrad Schnitzler can be heard on this 8-track outing. Of course, one can also draw parallels upon the electro sound from Detroit but the seminal impulse came from Germany. However, the latter point is not the most essential but it is a very fine listening experience. In a word, let's consume it.

A Tiny Window - First Jams With Phil Self (2011)

/Alt-folk, New Weird Britain, Psych-folk, Improvised music, Live session/

Comment: this is a nice bundle of 4 tracks coming out from England. A Tiny Window is Matthew Watkins who is being known from Exeter-based experimental/free/space folk crew Children of The Drone. This time he collaborates with Kent-based Phil Self (from the folk and roots music combo Cocos Lovers). The duo improvises on such instruments as mandolin, baglama, and saz resulting in a bit melancholic but spellbinding, transcendent progressions of string conjured chords. It makes the listener feel a little bit dizzy and hazy. Of course, all those who have enjoyed vast discography by Children Of The Drone and its offshoots may have a hunch what to expect from it.

Pasqualino Ubaldini - Metissage (2011)

/Free folk, Drone folk, Easy listening, Chill out, Crossover, World music, Jazz, Improvised music/

Comment: the Italian experimentalist/improvisation artist Pasqualino Ubaldini is back with his brand new one. Here are 8 strong tracks which are set up to follow three separate tendencies on its own - the first of them is hypnotic, truly shimmering folk droning resembling of the doings by the Exeter-based collective Children Of The Drone and its subsidiaries. However, the second one follows the restraint jazz-soaked improvisations and standards from different areas. The third one is biased toward soothing mood music - suddenly ascending whiffs of flutes, wistful orchestrations, ethnic motives (if you are the fan - of course you are! - of Ennio Morricone then these glitches are thought for you). In a nutshell, the release is complete, profound, introspective, on the other side, it is enough tempered and filled in with solar rays and cosmic power.

Echo Chamber Rope Tick – Oktober Sound Lab (2013)

/Psych-rock, Avant-rock, Drone rock, Psychedelia, Dream folk, Post-punk, Raga music, Experimental rock, Experimental electronica, Krautfolk, Space folk, Experimentalism, Krautrock, Psych-folk, Electro-acoustic, Indie rock, Trance rock, Art rock, Improvised music/

Comment: Andy Nation, Seamo Teare, and Simon Mathewson come from Southwest England to present a smorgasbord of 12 tracks extending over 70 minutes in total. More concretely, they have extracted some thought-provoking elements from different and mostly peripheral musical genres to result in a mellow outlet. The listener can perceive 60s acid folk inspired spaced-out trips, transcendent raga motives, dada-alike vocal pastiches, knee-deep psychedelic music conjured aesthetic freedom, 70s krautrock induced repetitiveness and high-pitched electronic effects, and 80s post-punk-esque insolence and arrogance in full flight. By method, however, the trio`s music can be considered rather jazz music because their soundscape used to be in permanent motion and affording an innumerable amount of disparate changes throughout. By kindred souls there can be drawn parallels upon the likes of The Fall, Kemialliset Ystävät, Gong, New Mystikal Troubadours, The Japanese Girl, early Kraftwerk (especially the albums Kraftwerk 1, and Kraftwerk 2), Ashtray Navigations, Children Of The Drone, for instance. By the way, the issue was released under Chinstrap, which is curated by a famous plunderphonics/sound collage musician, Ergo Phizmiz. All in all, although the result is truly off-kilter, it sustains the level throughout the course.
