Optms Prme – Music To Grow Plants (2014)
/Deep techno, Electronic
pop, New Age, Poptronica, Electro pop, Sampledelic, Easy listening/
Comment: interestingly,
Optms Prme`s release title reminds me of one Estonian band`s name, Music For
Your Plants. Moreover, there exist even some parallels which could be drawn
upon both artist`s music. However, Optms Prme`s 3-track issue is a friendly
listening experience thanks to sonic dodges and crossed aspects therefore
creating something truly mottled and diverse – from oneiric techno progressions
and aquatic new age-y visions to bubblegum-spawned electro pop frequencies and
spaced-out electronic faeries. Actually it is truly convincing how the artist
gets right to fulfil the promise to move from one crease to another with such easiness
and in a seamless way. This was the first insight of mine into the discography
of Vaatican Records which seems to be fairly intriguing.
Mogwai – Showbox at the Market 2011-05-07 (2011)
/Post-rock, Doom rock, Art
rock, Epic, Noise rock, Post-metal, Drone rock/
Comment: for me Mogwai`s
best album by far is Come On To Die
Young (1999) though the first and third and fourth release are fine ones either.
Later on, I have avoided to hear their albums because of being a little disappointed
by lacking new ideas and catchy elements within the Scottish band`s core. I
also guess the live performances used to sound better than their later
releases. At least this 16-track issue did it in Seattle exactly four years
ago. The gig was properly laid down because of being varicoloured and filled
with different sounds and magic noises. Their well-known epic and bold
progressions on guitars and thumping drums are interspersed with brainsick
noises and empowered drones from feedback and keyboards to impend doomed days
for human kind. Of course, there are some exceptions as well – for instance, Mexican Grand Prix which rocks socks off
like an early Stereolab of conflating the psychedelic elements of krautrock and
Farfisa driven acid/drone rock impulses. There are also some woodwind based
catchy melody progressions glimpses. Gorgeous show indeed.
Popidiot – Talk To Me (2014)
/Indie pop, Alternative pop,
New Wave, Electro-indie, Synth rock/
Comment: Popidiot is an Estonian-Finnish project consisting of Hendrik Luuk, Matti Peura, and Rein Fuks who started off their way at the beginning of 00s and have issued a couple of albums so far. This is their two-folded single with catchy guitar hooks, bouncy rhythms and freely movable synthesised squelches here and there. The outing was released on Seksound (by the way, Rein Fuks is the chairman of the record label), a leading Estonian indie label being the domicile for many contemporary and early Estonian indie artists (for instance, Seksound issued recently Bizarre`s Café De Flor (initially released in 1996 on the Forwards Records from Tartu, Estonia) on vinyl which can be considered one of the most eminent indie albums from Estonia – a spellbinding blend of dream pop and electronic rhythms).

Icarus Syndrome - The Fun Tunnels of Foosland (2014)
/Indie folk, Americana,
Chamber folk, Folk indie, Epic, Lo-fi, DIY, Alt-folk/
Comment: Icarus Syndrome is an artist from Urbana, Illinois, USA whose
19-track issue opens up intriguing sides and fringes throughout this quite lengthy
course of journey. Rough guitar strums are boldly represented over there to
evolve into remarkably more sophisticated compositions influenced both by
contemporary and glorious American roots music. Icarus Syndrome`s sound could
be considered a sort of retrospective one though in a good sense only because
all these well-known sonorous elements (performed with guitar, banjos,
mandolins, harmonicas) are empowered with modern use of electronic music,
sequenced rhythms and sublime orchestrations. The album involves lots of songs
having power to melt the listener`s heart. At times it is epic (even
hyper-panoramic), at times it is bleak and subjecting itself to this contrasty
effects does make sense undoubtedly. Let`s enjoy it.
The Silence Industry - Brother Sing, Sister Shout (And Other Conspiracies) (2014)
/Cold wave, Post-punk, Goth
rock, Alternative rock, Space rock, Remixes, Psych-rock/
Comment: majestically thumping drum syncopation, reverb-heavy guitars and
cloudy vocal lines are there to constitute something special for those
listeners who think gothic rock and post-punk should be crossed and drawn up in
a spaced-out way. The thread which could be tagged as cold wave. Silence
Industry is a combo from Canada the line-up of which is made up of Graham Jackson,
Laura Mikulec, Josh Pearlman and Hyuma Frankowski. The combo has been related
to such labels as Ekleipsi, afmusic, and enoughrecords over the almost 10
years. Their 7-piece issue depicts that silence can be entrancing and gruesome at the same time. Indeed, although all these tracks are produced to
be quite lengthy it does not bother nevertheless. However, the only remix
represented within the pack does not impose upon me (consisting merely of a
maze of sonic effects – it is just annoying at its best). The album is finished
off with the bonus track Beneath A
Sinking Sky which deviates from the other pieces just using the strums of
acoustic guitar (the only unplugged version on the album). By kindred souls I
recommend listen to Lycia, an early Cocteau Twins, an early Dead Can Dance, The
Chameleons. The issue is released on Enough Records, a prolific Portuguese
label containing much music worth to be discovered.

Namm – Geografia (2012)
/Electronic pop,
Indietronica, Art pop, Chamber pop, Alternative pop/
Comment: Namm`s Geografia is a moody whole of crispy
electronic rhythms, sublime female vocal deliveries and catchy synthesised
explorations emitting in different directions its bottomless energy and
charisma. Furthermore, all these elements mentioned above used to be
channelized into the integrated fist ready to emotionally- slap anyone who is
ready to approach it. And those orchestrations flickering here and there are simply
marvellous drifting somewhere inbetween sensual and epic realms of human
cognition. By the way, all these nine songs are sung in Spanish thereby letting
some closed books unsealed. In a nutshell, by listening to it the listener gets
a solid cerebral massage. Flawless result.

Rosario Indie - Compilado 2014 (2014)
/Indie pop, Psychedelic
rock, Alternative dance, Alternative rock, Fuzz pop, Electro-indie/
Comment: it is a decent miscellany of disparate indie pop tendencies – ranging from common indie pop progressions, dreamy pop reveries and dance-appealed notches to krautrock influenced motorik beats, knee-deep psychedelic reflections and clamant outcries of guitar sounds. In a word, this compilation involves plenty of synth sounds, electronic manipulations, fetching guitar chords and crossover sounds, This compilation of 17 tracks is related to Rosario, a city in Argentina. Indeed, it gives you a good overview about indie music in Rosario, and Argentina either. There are represented such artists as Mi Nave, Oscar Favre, Daddy Rocks, Juani & Checho, Proyecto Sarajevo, Vacaciones en Globo, Juli Camelli, Helena Nav, SÉNOR CASCO, ńńńń, Hombre de Color, Jubany, Té de Indio, Korben Dallas, Rejected & The X Club, Cromattista, Alpha Centauri. Most ditties are sung in Spanish.
Sophie Rimheden - rwb001 (2014)
/Electronic pop, Art pop,
Post-disco/
Comment: this 2-track issue
was the first in the discography of racewillbegin, a Swedish record label. The
result overcomes the listener with emotions and perceptual stimuli. More
concretely, the tracks called Hold Me,
and Wanting are crunchy electronic
explorations moving across the line of pop music and post-disco. Furthermore,
the artist reveals her ambitious side in these compositions – these ones are
fairly attention-getting and enchanting pop examples. Great breaks, melody
progressions and charming autotune mixed vocal lines. Despite its synthetic nature
the whole is replete with enough oxygen. Get it for you.
ThOmas.W - bru:t (2014)
/Neofolk, Industrial rock,
No Wave, Experimental rock/
Comment: these 6 tracks are
the result of a noisy improvisation session by an artist called ThOmas.W. The
outing gets right due to melting together cold folk vocals, noisy rock snippets
and industrial segments. Strident expressions and reverie drenched moments are
finely balanced and juxtaposed to create incisive contrasts and provoking
pictures in thought. Although the issue chimes frequently in doleful and sad
way it is a kind of irritating and even perverse one. If you like such combos
as Death In June, Einstürzende Neubauten, Boyd Rice this whole is thought for
you. The issue is a part of the excellent borderline punk imprint Myhand.Thanx
Records.

Dmyra – The Key (2010)
/Art folk, Singer-songwriter,
Downbeat, Trip-hop, Alternative, Crossover, Folktronica, Improvised music/
Comment: Dmyra is the
nom de plume of Robert Demes II coming out of Costa Rica whose 6-track issue is
a multi-faceted appearance of different influences and musical indulgences.
There are represented minimalist, slightly angulate folk ditties which are
embellished with jazzy, downbeat and trip-hop shuffles and austere synthesised
breezes on the top. In fact, Demes is not to be hurried up to reach some goals
or places and his slacker attitude is fine actually. The album is an effective
and cumulative buildup of sonic smithereens having and abandoning basic lines
within these puzzles at the same time. It could be considered the experimental
core of the issue for inducing the listener`s restless pleasure. By kindred
souls the can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Beck, The Beta Band. Get it.
Pagan Spirits - Legado Pagano y Honor Ancestral (Demo) (2013)
/Neoclassical, Black metal,
Experimental metal, Brutal metal, Pagan metal, Field recording/
Comment: Pagan Spirits is the combo of Alexander Teyaotlani, and Aracely Guevara coming out of Salvador, a small country in Mesoamerica. Their 6-track issue is an imaginative sonorous act of blackened metal, neoclassical instrumentation and some field recording snippets here and there. In a word, those surging groaning and moaning billows constantly represented throughout the album used to evoke an otherworldly, a little bit horrifying feeling backed up by epic orchestrations and rapid noodling on drums and guitars. Smirkily silent and even soothing twines are followed by crushing impulses and malicious torrents thereby setting up contrasty yet intriguing agglomerations of sound layers. At times it chimes like the ancestors of the Indian side are resurrected from their unmarked graves to arrive and revenge to bloody white conquistadors. In fact, the duo says it is a tribute to their roots and ancestors. Let`s honour it. It is a convincing, and honest act indeed.
Monade - Variety Playhouse 2005-05-25 (2005)
/Indie pop, Alternative pop,
Psychedelic pop, Drone pop, Dream pop. Live session/
Comment: Monade is a musical project from
Bordeaux, France whose spiritual leader is Laetitia Sadier who is widely known
as the singer, guitarist, keyboard player from Stereolab. Furthermore, it could
be without to draw parallels with her more known combo. This live gig features
12 tracks at a length of 64 minutes. It involves a soup of guitar and
psychedelic keyboard blended sounds getting inspiration from the rhythm
patterns of artsy German rockers like Neu!, and Faust and other side being influenced
by tropicalia pop, bossa nova, and lounge pop. If to compare it to Stereolab it
involves less crossover and electronic experiments rather being channelized
into a mellow indie/renaissance pop structure. On the other side, it reminds of
an early Stereolab which provided more clear-cut ditty shapes of indie/drone
pop/shoegaze. In a word, it is a fine listening hour.

Sr. Acaso – Sr. Acaso (2014)
/Alternative pop, Indie
rock/
Comment: at first glance I
perceived I was listening to an album sung in Portuguese. Actually it was not
in this way, however, being quite close to the truth anyway. More concretely, Sr.
Acaso is a combo from Galicia, an autonomous region nearby the border of Portugal
in northwestern Spain and a linguistically quite affine language indeed.
Musically it is a whole of a handful of tracks saturated with touching refrains,
scintillating guitar noises and entrancing piano chords. Effervescent moments
are varied with slower ones thus creating organic and dynamic feel laid over the
top of ditties. It is beautiful music and definitely a part of the heritage of
Galician culture.
No Kontakt – Signs (2013)
/Trance, Psychedelic,
Alternative dance/
the word “ (German) trance” was a pejorative one which was used by house and
jungle musicians and fans to describe inferior kind of music (eurobeat) then so
predominant in the mainstream of Continental Europe (and related to a street
event, named Love Parade which was gruesome indeed). Beyond that there is a
batch of other styles related to the trance music. For instance, pick up the
discography of Ektoplazm, a record label dedicated to spread the chords of
trance music. No Kontakt is a producer from Belgium with Portuguese origin whose
3-track issue encompasses suggestively crashing echoes, blissful synthesised
textures and acute yet sprawling rhythms beneath it. The issue is a part of the
recording list of Lab Room Unlimited.
The Fucked Up Beat – Europa II (2015)
/Sampledelic,
Plunderphonics, Avant-garde, Experimentalism, Sound collage/
Comment: Brett Zehner and Eddie Palmer issued a pair of albums (Europa, and Europa II) on the 5th of January in 2015. As their previous albums so far Europa II consists of haunting, spaced-out samples with regard to UFO stories which are tightly interlaced with bold piano chords, electronic progressions on top and oldie music whiffs looping in and out of sequence. The 12-track release involves lots of emotive tracks ranging from oppressive melancholia to chilling desolation of a lonely soul. In general, if to compare it to the twin release the result might be slightly more lethargic and devoid of glistening techno and big beat rhythms. However, it chimes like a sort of pop music though it is not such kind of by no means. In a nutshell, the outing is mysteriously captivating and enchanting.

[Teaser of the day] Ladytron - Destroy Everything You Touch (Live @ KEXP)
Irish – Manufactures (2006)
/Experimental techno,
Experimental electronica, Electro-acoustic, Glitchtronica/
Comment: Manufactures is a challenging and
thought-provoking issue thanks to exploiting different sonic fabrics, sonorous
colours and stylistic intentions to create something innovative and startling.
More profoundly, Kengo Miyazaki uses electro-acoustic shuffles, minimal techno
frequencies and smothering glitch electronics and noises – at times these
sections are set apart from other ones, at times tightly interlaced with other
ones. In any cases, the result fulfils its initial intention and premise.
Despite intense exploitation of electronic sounds and edged electronics the
whole used to sound in an emotive way.
Gamardah Fungus – Night Walk With Me (2013)
/Drone, Space rock, Post-rock,
Epic, Dark ambient, Experimental rock, Improvised music, Avant-rock/
Comment: Gamardah Fungus is a musical project
from Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine whose 5-track issue is a spellbinding example of
how to explore inner and outer space per excellence. Musically and sonically it
embraces loads of aspects which in turn will constitute new elements and
crossovers for the listener`s privilege. At times it sounds as if the wall of
sound were invented by Jimi Hendrix because of those nervous guitar riffs
represented there are tightly coated with spaced-out milieu and sublime noises.
Furthermore, space rock explorations will meet with jazz-y woodwind pipe
improvisations thereby exemplifying the feeling of how the extension of outer
space would have had its trace and pace (arguably having it so far). At times
guitar drenched improvisations and extensions (due to rich usage of delays and
reverberations) are embellished with discontinued concrete sounds and spoken
word whiffs thus amplifying mysterious feel on it. Subsequently I can assume the
result is transcendental and beyond time. By kindred souls I recommend listen
to such artists as fydhws, Tont, Tore Elgaroy, and Glenn Branca. The issue is a
part of Hidden Vibes, an excellent Ukraine imprint dedicated to issue post-rock, modern classical and ambient music.
Inverness – Ivana (2012)
/Shoegaze, Alternative rock,
Indie pop, Dream pop, Psychedelic rock/
Comment: Inverness is a
Brazilian quartet whose album Somewhere I Can
Hear My Heart Beating (2010, Jamendo) was an outstanding issue which can
freely be considered a hallmark in the indie/dream pop/shoegaze/psychedelic pop
scene. Although Ivana is slightly
diluted with regard to the aforementioned album the result seems to be still
great. The outing is designed in a more straightforward way though adding new elements
to the mix. More concretely, those poignant guitar strums, Lucas de Almeida`s longing vocal
threads and catchy orchestrations are adorned with some doo wop attitude
affording the whole more light-hearted breezes to be blown over the top. At
times the Inverness`s sound chimes like a mix of Sufjan Stevens, Stereolab, and
Free Design (however, their work is not epiphenomenal by no means – it is just a bare comparative case to hint at similar aesthetics). Recommended.

Tommy Cash – Euroz Dollaz Yeniz (2014)
/Hip-hop, Rap, Sampledelic,
Urban music, Experimental-hop, Witch-hop/
Comment: Tommy Cash is
one of the most beloved and intriguing hip-hoppers/rappers from Estonia whose
debut album Euroz Dollaz Yeniz is replete with disparate hooks and gears but
anyway the 9-track issue`s core deviates from the ordinary hip-hop album due to
exploiting ominous witch house/drag house tectonic bass sequences and Death
Grips and Dälek influenced spaced-out delays and noisy echoes coming out of it.
On the other side, Tommy Cash`s chanting is coated with an exotic timbre and
accent which do embellish his buffoonish singing style which might seem a
little bit over the top at first glance. But please stay patient – you will get used to and at least you feel
it is a natural thing on its own. Additionally I recommend pick up another
Estonian hip-hop musician with similar aesthetic approach and range – rin la.
Enbilulugugal - The End Is Extremely Fucking Nigh (2014)
/Black metal, Noise, Brutal metal,
Doom noise, Hardcore punk, Leftfield, Noisecore/
Comment: I have always liked the coverprints of black metal, goregrind (and its subgenres) albums especially those ones of depicting dead livings and monsters. The recent one is impressive no exceptions – more concretely, the mutant comes out of a slot of the fallout shelter to apparently destroy slick politicians who arranged this bullshit. However, the most important issue related to the musical groups is their music. Enbilulugugal`s 9-track issue consists of brutal noise, doom, blackened metal and even some hardcore/crunk/noise punk woven sonic threads full of powerful energy, sweeping torrents of scream from the cancerous throat shred. On the other side, the artist`s aesthetics does not rely on chaotic improvised nexus but it seems to be thoroughly thought over to create more channelized and impressive attacks of sound. The album is finished off by The Bright Side, a cover version of the Poor Bastards` track with the same name. Especially recommended for listening before falling asleep. The issue is a part of the discography of a fabulous imprint, Torn Flesh Records.

Ergo Phizmiz - Some Folk Can (2014)
/Sound collage, Sampledelic,
Alternative rock, Dub, Electronic, Art rock, Plunderphonics, Experimental rock/
Comment: what else can be
expected from the plunderphonic/sound collage musician but interesting sound
slivers and startling mash-up intentions. Ergo Phizmiz`s 10-track album starts
off with pouring rock leaned riffs which later will be traded for different
kind of rhythms (from minimally designed to exuberant ones). At times the
concept is extended by dub drenched melodica ridden chords and shimmering
guitar playing which is a welcome variance with regard to the whole for sure.
It can be said Phizmiz pays partly tribute to dub influenced
post-punk/alternative rock music. In a word, this album seems to be wherein Phizmiz
turned into arty rock music faith (of course, it is a conditional statement
regarding his multi-faceted sonic frame). The album reminds me of some Dave
Keifer aka Cagey House`s compositions.
nonlips - A Collection Of Songs Recorded By The Flaming Lips (2011)
/Covers, Lo-fi, DIY,
Alternative pop, Indie pop, Psychedelic pop, Space pop/
Comment: Wayne Coyne curated combo is a lucky
one because of producing music what they wish themselves to create while the
albums are bought by thousands of people. The more time goes on the more
frantic their aesthetic approach seems to develop – they are an apparent avant-garde
combo within the major stream of pop music. There are up 17 covers with Lips`
songs reflecting upon Lips` psychedelic and space pop explorations and mellow
electronically tinged soft pop tendencies being so actual in recent production.
Furthermore, these artist represented on the miscellany add lo-fi and DIY
coloration to the pot. Let`s listen to it – it`s thought-provoking and chill.
It is a compilation where music is made by members of The Flaming Lips Message
Bored communities (2002-present).

Infirm Individual – Spiritual Blackout (2014)
/Electronic pop, New Age,
Hip-hop, Futurist pop, Synth pop, New Wave, Space pop, Synth fusion/
Comment: Infirm Individual`s album Agoraphobia was one of the most eminent
issues in 2014 at least regarding Recent Music Heroes blog. Although it was
deliberately eclectic it constituted an organic whole involving disparate
elements from black metal and cybergrind to more mellow synth pop and easy
listening slivers. In fact, Spiritual
Blackout comes out of the same year, though providing a little different
accents and flavours. Undoubtedly it is a great 4-track release drawing
aesthetically influences from spaced-out glamorous synth rock/electro pop
rock/fusion bands (Space, Ganymed, Zodiac) from the end of 70s and the first
half of 80s in Continental Europe and even surprisingly blinking the eye to the
hip-hop genre. Yeah, it embraces a shitloads of glisteningly exuberant synth
progressions and drum machine relied thumps and alien-like vocal glimpses
immersed in hyperreality. In a nutshell, probably I am going to add it also to
the best albums issued in 2014. By the way, he recently issued the brand new
one album Neo Tokyo (it
is a self-release similarly to his previous outings).
VA – Movin On (2006)
/Glitchtronica, Experimental
techno, Abstract electronica, Avant-electronica, Improvised music, Minimal
techno/
Comment: although this
miscellany of 14 compositions was released approximately 9 years ago the whole
chimes truly impressive and refreshing today as well. The composition was a
part of the discography of a record label, Minus-N which disseminated the seeds
of experimental electronic music throughout the 00s. As previously said the
result is outstanding because of revealing some best sides regarding
experimental electronic and abstract/minimal techno compartment. Although the
shape of these tracks might be seen as austere, desolate or bleak at the first
glance the more you are ready to immerse in it the wider and warmer the content
will seem to the listener. Indeed, it can be said the result is fairly
appealing (not quite sexually appealing unless you are imagining to have sex
with robots fed by high AC/DC voltage loaded cables). Eventually you can
conclude the result is minimalist rather than somehow disadvantaged. In any
cases, there are represented such artists as Claudia Bonarelli, .at/on,
goem/fdw, The Suffragettes, Shalma, Lod, g_n44f, Motor, Masaya Sasaki, Andrey
Kiritchenko, Pero, Salmon, Muffrare, Jos Smolders. The compilation is mandatory.
iLoveMakonnen – I Love Makonnen EP (2014)
/Hip-hop, R`n`b, Urban
music, Electronic soul, Autotune, Crossover/
Comment: Makonnen Sheran aka iLoveMakonnen`s 7-track issue draws on tectonic-plate bass rhythms, high-pitched swirling synth sounds and the artist`s autotuned vocal deliveries. Stylistically it can be considered an example of urban sound/sound if to generalize. More concretely, it is an organic drift between hip-hop elements, electronic soul music and electronic dance music. The tracks include affective melodies and vocal harmonies which make sense eventually. The artist is helped by many other artists like Metro Boomin, FKi, Dj Spinz, DunDeal, Sonny Digital, and 808 Mafia).

Jonas Lundqvist - Du, Drömmar & Jag (2011)
/Dance rock, Indie dance,
Punk funk, New Wave, Alternative pop, Indie, Post-punk/
Comment: Jonas
Lundqvist`s ditty Du, Drömmar & Jag
emerges warm feelings within me while drawing on bouncy and elastic rhythm
structure, some suggestive transformative seconds and high-pitched vocal
delivery. Eventually the result seems to be fairly magical because of showcasing
organic and robotic knacks at the same time. By listening to it through a span
of 285 seconds the single puts in the mind of such dance-appealed
post-punk/punk funk dinosaurs as The Pop Group, and Gang of Four, and New
Order. However, Lundqvist does have its own idiosyncratic twist on it (for
instance, by singing in Swedish it chimes in a quite exotic way). The single
came out of the album Så e de me de.
Gnouli Monsters - Hi (2008)
/Lo-fi, DIY, Indie,
Singer-songwriter, Synth, Fuzz pop, Experimental pop, Electronic, Alternative
pop/
Comment: Nick
Grover aka Gnouli Monster`s album Hi
was one of the first swallows (26th in queue) released under the
do-it-yourself label Rack & Ruin curated by the Netherlands residing
Englishman Dean Birkett. These 13 tracks extended over 34 minutes will
constitute a fine listening experience where some quite ordinary lo-fi/bedroom
drenched pop progressions are moderately variegated with more experimental
approaches where the artist`s instrumental music is infused with electronic
manipulation acts, singing variations and poignant sonic effects or just
exploiting some sorts of synthesised syncopation to create more electronic pop/and
chillwave resembling templates. In a word, the listener shall have to find out
the proper knack across the tracks and moody balance within the album. The
album seems to be a grower.
Piss On Authority / SLUG - Echoes Of The Past Reverberate into Our Future (2014)
/Hardcore punk, Trash punk,
Crust punk, Anarcho-punk/
Comment: if you feel bored
of arty post-punk aesthetics (or something like that) but still ready to
continue with similarly categorized music then I recommend listen to this split
of different kind of punk rock. POA and Slug provide an unembellished kind of
hirsute punk torrents directly cutting to the chase by handling societal and
political shortages based on egoism and lies of the politicians and readiness
to preserve the status quo of recent political system. Furthermore, the artists
hint at the fact that the systems used to dominate over individuals and it does
not make sense at all who govern on the top over us. Pessimistic yet actual, isn`t?

Once And Again – Minus Four – In Stereono (2011)
/Experimental rock, Avant-garde,
Improvised music, Free folk, Spoken word, New Weird America/
Comment: behind this
project are the original line-up members of ¡para!helion whose miscellany of 13
pieces casts light upon some tendencies being actual in the United States at
the moment or recent past. It embraces a shitloads of curious experiments in
the realm of rock and folk music. It can be considered a pop music though being
a distinctly peripheral one. More concretely, it spans disparate genres
extending from folksy roots music to distorted guitar backed spoken word
snippets and jazz and world music relied improvisations. The combo is related
to such blog as Pen & Mallet which is a source to discover a lot of new
bands additionally (Aboombong, Dustdevil & Crow, Blotter, Psychic Enemies
Network and some more groups besides).
Raymundo Mendoza – Translations EP (2010)
/Deep techno, Club dance,
Tech-house, Minimal techno/
Comment: listen to
it…let`s dance following El Paso, Texas,
US-based Mendoza`s sultry house and techno drenched rhythms accentuated with
subtle electronic effects, hypnotic debris, spooky echoes from parallel-aligned
world and semi chords of vague syllables. The EP seems to start off from
nowhere thereafter rhythmic sequences do dilate and blossom stepwise though
having no clear-cut centre and defined focus. However, such sort of conception
is the source of appeal of club dance music as if having no identity and name.
In a word, it is cerebral and limb centred at the same time.
The Shimmer Effect – Mechanosensitive (2013)
/Electronic pop, Downtempo,
New Age, Psyambient/
Comment: actually I do have some
problems to catch at the quintessence of this album because it chimes in a
sultry, beatific (almost psychedelic) way straggling and coming together as a
whole of repeated cycles relentlessly. It sounds almost like “live” music
though the sounds represented over there used to be processed with electronic
devices and sequencers. It might be nowadays New Age music saturated with
exuberant rhythms and blissful spaced-out aesthetics. Or is it a kind of
psychedelic ambient music full of flickering chords and motives? The rhythms
are juxtaposed against blossoming sonic glimpses to root, extend and make an
impression. The result is magniloquent and deep enough at the same time.
Elbee – Visions Of Vactrols (2014)
/Downtempo, Experimental
electronica, IDM, Sampledelic, Experimental techno/
Comment: Lloyd Barrett
aka Elbee reveals his craftiness to scan different sonic pallettes and realms. Actually
it is quite puzzling to find out the word to describe this dizzying whole. More
concretely, it is replete with an innumerable amount of twists and dodges –
from world music and New Age inspired breezes to more dark hued electro and
alien-like breakbeat outfits, from cerebral yet catchy techno propulsions to
compelling electronic appearances. At times the cadence is deliberately
downshifted to create even more confusing, spaced-out feeling. However, the
issue will be finished off with The
Indexilarm Dimension which chimes like a modern classical piece created by
the cyborgs. In a word, it is a great work released on Wood & Wire.

/Electro-metal, Crossover,
Fusion, Progressive metal, Synth rock/
Comment: DavidKBD is a
musician from Pamplona, Basque country, Spain whose 7-track album is a seamless
amalgamation of videogame flickers and bombastic metal music. More concretely,
it consists of progressive metal guitar riffs, rapid key changes in the vein of
fusion music, and blistering shells of electronic synth rock. On the other
side, actually the issue involves only few videogame samples – it might be a
little bit confusing but not being drawback. The outlet is highly energetic,
synergic and thereby convincing throughout its chameleon-like course. Let`s enjoy it.
