This Lonely Crowd - Doppeldanger And Other Delicious Secrets (2012)

Comment: This Lonely Crowd, the combo from Curitiba, Brazil used to showcase their power and aesthetical strength in a way having never chimed so promisingly after their fabulous debut album An Endless Moment Everyday All The Time. Furthermore, their previous, third album Some Kind Of Pareidolia seemed to be lacking a little bit of sharp ideas and ever-winning propulsions. However, any next step is needful for something bigger or higher level achievable in the future. This time, more concretely, they do counterbalance massive, hirsute guitar riffs and eargasmic, orchestration-pitched noise walls and ingurgitating noise bits with silentful yet highly meaningful compositions. I have never perceived their oeuvre to be related to the post-rock scene somehow. Now they have done it due to epic frames and elusive visions. Very convincing and beautiful indeed. This is a way how rock music should be produced and transmitted. There are up 15 ditties, 2 of them are covers (Depeche Mode`s Everything Counts, and Napalm Death`s Lucid Fairytale). This Lonely Crowd are Humpty Dumpty, Jabberwock, Red Queen, Tweedledee, and Tweedledum.

Sobre A Máquina – Decompor (2010)

Comment:two months ago I reviewed the Brazilian`s combo sophomore album Areia (2011, Sinewave) which was a quite diverse and colourful release. However, their debut Decompor is more orthodox, monotonous, and mourning. Yet, it is highly beautiful in its melancholy. Indeed, it is f.cking sad on its slo-mo running reminding of Sunn O))), Bardo Pond, Jesu, and Jessamine at times.

Comment: this release can be considered as a somehow white crow amongst the issues on Sinewave, a Brazilian post-rock label. Why? Because guitars are replaced with sampledelic trash veering out from punching noir-filled beats to bright-scaled sunshiny visions, from noiseful glitchtronica to more or less electro-acoustic explorations. You can enjoy heavily effect-loaded notches, flying hooks to the left and right. At times it seems that the soundscape could be dedicated to those few days before lifting of the veil.

Esplim - Re-EP (2009)

Comment: Esplim (Romulo Michaelsen) offers up a bunch of post-rock-related tracks - first of all, it functions to have drive and accents on overdriving, resonating guitar paths which are variegated with silentful, electronic, trip-hop-drenched beats. Elsewhere it incorporates spoken word snippets and even baby`s babble. The only problem is that it used to flake out in the ending part, having no clear-cut intention and expressive shape.

Sobre A Máquina - Areia (2011)

Comment: Sobre A Máquina is a Brazilian experimental combo delivering their second issue Areia, a follow-up to Decompor. Their instrumental approach is built on massive guitar dominance poisoned with piano chords, resonating mazes of noises, programmed beats, altogether gathering the enthralled ambience around those abovementioned sonic constituents. Yet, it goes far beyond the borders of post-rock and industrial rock, permitted to land somewhere inbetween post-metal and fusion (saxophone!) and dark wave. I recommend listen to Flora`s Trip (2010), and Wreck And Reference`s Black Cassette (2011) as well.

Uppsala Solemne – A Fúria do Vento (2011)

Comment: Cristiane Miranda and Leonardo Fleck aka Uppsala Solemne`s new EP proves to be a crafty cake - highly exhilarating in its diverse ways and swerves. More closely, there can be detected for IDM-esque impetus and imagery, elfin-induced folk incantations, trumpet-induced yearning passages/sampledelics/jazz-based delicate whiffs, vibraphone-driven organicness, all of that is seamlessly interwoven into a potent fist. Minor key-relied interludes on a piano used to evoke a thought about that Fleck`s Blanched-related post-rock approach is still in-flight. Indeed, it is a decent follow-up to Afecto EP.

This Lonely Crowd – Some Kind of Pareidolia (2011)

Comment
: This Lonely Crowd has been an astonishing quintet from Brazil who has made up much dizzy energy (via strong emphasis on the power pop and shoegaze-ish angle), or being involved in more dream-charged contemplations, respectively. However, the recent issue tries to cross those two extremities, though, affording less entropy with captivating X-factors altogether - if to compare it to Entangled Chaos, or especially to an endless moment everyday all the time. Moreover, the second part of the Some kind of Pareidolia is obviously more impressive than the first set of tracks, showcasing more clear-cut elaborations, figurative language, directed power and found synergy - or the other way around - just being avoided to be sticked in intransitive chasing and incoherent jamming. Despite of some deficits, however, it can be considered a kind of pleasurable release indeed.

Lavalsa - Lavalsa (2011)

Comment: A simply rocking shoegaze- and power pop influenced 4-track album by a Brazilian quartet under Sinewave, the label which has delivered some great albums (i.e Hangin Freud`s Sunken; This Lonely Crowd`s An Endless Moment Everyday All The Time, and Entangled Chaos; Loomer`s Coward Soul, for instance). Behind Lavalsa`s concept can be apprehended lots of swayings between silentful leadoffs and noiseful, near-epic outbursts, joyous playings on dissonants and consonants, in a more concrete way, you can perceive influences veering from Sonic Youth-hued guitar stumblings and My Bloody Valentine-like chord alchemy to slightly psychedelic Smashing Pumpkins-esque powerful hooks, catchy ascendings and organic calmings.

Wry Deep Field/Nostalgia (Sinewave)


Previously I have overviewed three eloquent Brazilian shoegaze bands like Inverness, Loomer, and This Lonely Crowd on my blog, though, the next one Wry could be counted as a precedessor for all of them - both by their lineage, temporary precedence, and musical activity as well. Being started out at the ending of 90`s, the quartet have issued a handful of albums, shared the stage with Man Or Astroman?, Mudhoney, Superchunk, Ash, Asobi Seksu, and The Rakes among others, and recruited knob-twiddlers like Tim Wheeler (Ash), and Raphael Gordon (producer of The Strokes). Indeed, in recent years the quartet is used to be an international combo sharing their home between Sao Paolo and the United Kingdom.

Deep Field/Nostalgia does consist of two tracks, though, those track titles are referred a bit the other way. The opening Deep Field Nostalgia is fringed with a pair of elements, shuffling blissful fuzz noise and rigid organ-based drone sounds, respectively. However, the ending part of the number is a sole and distinct appearance of the last admitted element while you can detect for mere sensitivity of the natural environment around it. The second track In The Hell Of My Hell is a remix being layered up of sunbeam-titled synth effects and shimmering dodges of harmonic-filled layers and multiple combinations of breakbeat frequencies altogether conjuring a wraith-alike milieu.

Loomer Coward Soul (Sinewave)


Brasiiliast Porto Alegre`st pärit nelik ringutab ja sirutab, näidates uuel albumil muskulatuuri. Nende aastatagune debüütalbum "Mind Drops" (Little Room) oli lihtsalt kena üritus, seesugune, mis tagantjärele meenub üksnes märgi mahapanemise tõigana. Kuid nüüd nad kuuluvad plaadifirma Sinewave hõlma alla ning see peegeldab ennekõike märki kvaliteedi tõusust.

Nagu bändi nimigi vihjab, on nende ristiisaks My Bloody Valentine. (Austraalias on teinegi samanimeline shoegaze-rühmitus). Kuigi "Loveless"-i 5-loolisel eriti ei märka, on seda enam "Isn`t Anything"-i mõjud esil. (Kuid igasugu tribuudist on asi siiski kaugel). Küllap tajute ka Slowdive`i, Swervedriver`i, Smashing Pumpkins`i, aga ka 94. aasta Bizarre`i jalajälgi. Vastandid on kokku kuhjatud - kriipivad ja huilgavad kitarrid, kõrvetavad feedback`i servad, massiivsed ja lainetena valguvad trummiliinid, mees- ja naisvokaali õhuline unisoon ning eraldatus. Võrreldes debüütreliisiga on grunge`likku segmenti masterdatud ning tühja, atmosfäärilist hõngu süstivat ruumi (kuuldavate) struktuuride ümber kuhjatud. Küte otsa ei saa, seda valgub juurde ja peale. Superlood on Coward ja Super Fuzz (muljetavaldav shoegaze`i ja grunge`i puhastustuli). Ilmselt juba kolmas album Sinewave`ilt minu selle aasta top 50-s (This Lonely Crowd`i ja Hangin Freud`i üllitiste kõrvale). Leegitseb, raisk!

This Lonely Crowd An Endless Moment Everyday All the Time (Sinewave)


Kaheldamatult üks Brasiilia sünonüüme on hea ning mitmekesine muusika. Siinkirjutaja jaoks on küll Brasiilia muusika-alane kogemus jaotunud mõneti ebaühtaselt: bossat, bossat ning veelkord bossat, lisaks Os Mutantes`it, jazz`i, kohalikke rütme, klubirütme (techno`t ja house`i) plaadifirma Tranzmitter`i vahendusel, natuke goregrind`i ja freeformfreakout`i pluss korralikus koguses elektroonikat, indie`t ja post-rock`i. Kolme viimatimainitu žanri kogemus on tulnud peamiselt 2 allikast: Psicotropicodelia- ja Sinewave`i-nimeliste leiblite vahendusel.

Näiteks seni üks selle aasta albumeid- Hangin Freud`i "Sunken" - sai just äsja Sinewave`i viimase reliisi staatusest lahti. This Lonely Crowd (algusaasta 2009) koosneb viiest tüübist, kes tulevad Curitiba`st, Brasiilia kaguosa innovaatilisest linnast. Alustame visuaalsest küljest- albumi kaas meenutab kangesti My Bloody Valentine`i "Loveless"`i. Seoses ei ole kahtlustki. Et kas pakutakse MBV`i tribuuti või? Siiski mitte, kuigi Alan Moulder`i stiilis produtseeritud värki on siin küll. Kui esimene, vaikselt abrassiivse müraseina najal tuure koguv avang The Name of God in Children´s Heart välja jätta, siis selgub, et ansambel on tugevalt The Smashing Pumpkins`i kiiluvees. Power pop`i, shoegaze/dream pop`i ja hard rock/stoner`i elemendid moodustavad üllitise vundamendi, seinad ja katuse. Ning ilmselt ei ole hetkel ilmas teist lauljat peale Humpty Dumpty (või on see hoopis Red Queen?), kelle lähenemine meenutaks niivõrd Billy Corgan`i spooky`t-hingekriipivat (samas ka väljakandvat) vokaalmaneeri. Mulle nad igatahes väga meeldivad - keeran kõrvaklappidel volüümi põhja ning rock-ürgmees kargab välja. Sirgjooneline, lööv ning piisavalt krutskiline - kidrariffide massiivid, millest täiskihutamise pealt omakorda uued kihid välja kasvavad, nakkavad pillikäigud, kõikehaaravuseks ülenevad kidramüraseinad (nt Crash Course) - piisavalt peatusi-kiirendusi-peatusi-vaevu ühtlast tempot üksteise järel, ning serotoniinilaks ongi armutult laiali jagatud. Arhetüüpne rock. Selles bändis on tohutult energiat ning potentsiaali. Tohutult. Kuigi edaspidi peaksid nad Chicago legendi tee pealt veidi kõrvale keerama. Kuid näpp peale!

Hangin Freud Sunken (Sinewave)


São Paulo/London`i duo Hangin Freud (Paula ning Jonathan) alustas tegevust 2005. aastal. Samal aastal ilmunud omanimelisel albumil joonistusid välja rock noir`i, tumedakõlalise shoegaze`i, darkwave`i, slowcore`i ning power indie mõjujooned. Kriipivad kitarrid, gootilik vokaalmaneer(likkus), läbi tumedate delay-koridoride ekslevad-kaduvad helilõpmed, intiimne avarakõlalisus. Paksude kardinate ning punase valgusvine muusika. Järgmine üllitis “Continental” EP ei suutnud debüütalbumile uut lisada. Pigem vastupidi - varem esiplaanile tõstetud emotsionaalne aspekt hääbus nii pilliseadetes kui vokaali koha pealt peaasjalikult kuiva ning kiretusse soigumisse.

Kuid - Hangin Freud on tark ansambel. Järgides küll kindlat kitsast kontseptsiooni - liigutud albumilt albumile sama joont mööda - on osatud oma vigadest õppida ning endid täiendada. Osatud pisiasjadele enam tähelepanu pöörata, neid muljeterohkemaks disainida. Seda kitsapiirilisust tulekski mõista piiritletud, mitte piiratud või küündimatu kontseptsioonina. Kas Stereolab või Tortoise on oma näilises kitsapiirilisuses olnud küündimatud? See, kuidas Hangin Freud oma muusikat myspace`i leheküljel kirjeldab - klaustrofoobia, tuvid, lämbumine, küünistused, kuivad huuled, südamekipitus, valged seinad - peab uuel albumil väga täpselt paika. Žanrilised piirid - võrdluses debüüdiga - on peaaegu samad. Tõsi, enam ei ole noid pauerrežiimil liikuvaid indie-numbreid; saund on märksa roomavam ning kummituslikum, kohati ka voolavam. Helikeele hillitsetuse tõttu on Paula Borges`i - kord läbipõlenud tunnetest resigneerunud, kord tundmusi peegeldaval - häälel kanda veelgi suurem roll. Vähem kui pooletunnine “Sunken” on täis suuri numbreid - näiteks Swamp idealiseerib minimalistlikku laulukirjutamisoskust, saades ise seeläbi (minimalistliku) tumepopi võrdkujuks. See, kuidas seda vormi palistab õrnukuuldav sahisev foon, annab märku duo analüütilisest nutikusest inimtajuga ümberkäimisel; lühike nimilugu juhatab sisse varjudest tumendatud fantaasiarohke teekonna; We Are Not embab kummastavat dimensionaalsust genereeriva klaverisaundiga, mis võib täiesti usutavalt pärineda 80-90 aasta vanustelt lintidelt; Wasted on täis pelutavat obsessiooni. Kompulsioon - sunnib seda lugu mitu korda järjest kuulama; Lõpulugu In The City on segu atmosfäärilise shoegaze`i algest ning darkwave`ist, sobides mõnd kummituslinna tutvustava filmi taamaheliks. Ka fantaasiate stimuleerimisele on siin jäetud ruumi - olen kindel, et Edgar Allan Poe novellide (nt Berenike; Ligeia) lugemine siia kõrvale annaks metafüüsilised mõõtmed.

Suure albumi tunnusmärk on avardumine iga kuulamiskorraga. Üks selle aasta vaieldamatuid tipphetki. Igale tumemuusikafännile, haipenärivale indiefännile ning laiahaardelisele melomaanile kohustuslik album.
