fydhws - The Sound (four movements in the key of D) (2014)

/Space rock, Post-metal, Doom metal, Avant-rock, Post-rock, Epic, Experimental rock, Psych-rock, Epic, Conceptual/

Comment: fydhws is a fine example of the flourishing Macedonian underground scene during the last five years. He is an experimentalist who has issued a lot of albums by himself or in collaboration with other musicians. His soundscape used to be guitar-centered, however, at times it might be more abstract and minimal, at times more blossoming depending on a release. The recent issue of containing 4-long-track compositions is about to provide spaced-out, even dreamy guitar sounds and stunningly majestic crescendos within it. His sonic patterns are intriguing varying from repetitive, obsessive sonic tumult to more panoramic undulations. It is an up-to-date issue of nowadays progressive rock music because of incessantly drifting between the compartments of space rock, post-metal, post-rock and psych-rock. This time all the sound is presented in the key of D. All in all, fydhws` recent and foregoing oeuvre is an example of music being simultaneously heavy and wondrous, however, affording to splice suggestive explorations and outbursts with underlying technical proficiency. One of the albums in 2014.

Cldscp – Menso Freakfolk (2010)

/Lo-fi, Freak folk, New Weird Argentina, Cover, DIY, Primitronica, Toytronica, Weird folk, Trip-hop, Free folk/

Comment: as the title expressively suggests this 8-track issue is about freakiness and folk music, however, these nouns and adjectives are closely related to each other. Additionally, the Argentinian-based duo`s music used to incorporate yet many stylistic elements to create the crunchy outcome. Andy and Leopo used to exploit a wide array of more or less conventional instruments and concepts which extend from the utilisation of accordions, ukuleles, basses, Casio Tonebank-series synths to toys, beat-boxing, abraded electronica and few 8-bit music/video game snippets, and concrete music samples. Very likeable is Leopo`s singing filled with gentle flickers and vulnerable flutters. Beneath layers produced with the aforementioned instruments do throb skiddy trip-hop paces. Unchained Melody is a cover of Presley`s most famous song. By kindred souls the duo`s music can be compared with the sonic aesthetics of the sisters Cassady. The result is childish yet spiritedly conveyed.

He Is Watching Over Us - In Defence Of Disgusting Animals (2007)

/Indie folk, Folktronica, Lo-fi, Post-rock, Epic, Art folk, New Weird Sweden/

Comment: He Is Watching Over Us is the Swedish duo of Erik Gröndahl, and Johan Mattson whose 8-track instrumental issue is a calmed down, even picturesque moving with the assistance of predominantly restrained arpeggios and organically successive chords enchanted from acoustic and electric guitars which are varicoloured with droning organs and diffuse electronic explorations, and some anthemic orchestrated panoramas on the top. Stylistically the whole has been managed in a way to meander between post-rock-ish ambition, folktronic crispiness, and lo-fi-esque cosiness. The collective`s melancholic nature is very appropriate for listening to it recently, as the summer has passed by and the autumn just began. Least but not last - there is no disgusting animals, though, animals need to be protected more with strenuous activity.

Rho - Breathing Through the Liquid System (2011)

  • Indietronica
  • Post-pop
  • Alternative pop
  • Post-rock
  • Mood music
Comment: Rho`s issue is stripped down on No Source, an US-based record label for post-rock, electronic indie and  folk music. Indeed, this bundle of 9 instrumental pieces incorporates the sublime guitar chords and strumming, fine-feeling yet majestically produced electronic orchestrations and shuffled, skiddy rhythmic expressions. Sometimes guitar chords will be reversed or dragged through sonic filters to create more otherworldly ambience for the listener sake. On the other side, notwithstanding predominant experimental nature of creating compositions by Steve Setzepfandt and Josh Wittman the album is highly accessible thanks to repetitive motives and attention-getting melodic/harmonic drives throughout. By the way, Breathing Through the Liquid System was the duo`s debut album. Enjoy it.

Dick Richards - Costa Daurada EP (2003

  • Tech-house
  • Minimal techno
  • Microhouse
  • Dub techno
  • Experimental techno
  • Remix

Comment: this 4-piece EP reveals Dick Richards stark affinity for microscopic rhythmic frequencies and suggestive harmonies within the realm of house, techno, and dub (in a lesser extent, though). In spite of it the issue`s characteristics seem often to be way too far away from rhythms of the ordinary club lounge venue. It is rather cerebral music consecrated by Detroit techno tradition and the artists` aesthetics of such labels as Minus, Kompakt and Basic Channel. Indeed, every pop, crackle and slit on it seems to be thorougavaldamahly controlled and managed to constitute such a soothing gem. Indeed, though 11 years has passed, Costa Daurada EP echoes still in a refreshing way. The release was done available by cult dance music label Thinner.

Delhotel Records: Club Comfort Remezclado (2009)

  • Indietronica
  • Alternative pop
  • Leftfield
  • Remixes
  • Electro pop
  • Alternative dance
  • Robot pop
  • Electronic pop
  • Chillwave
Comment: this set of 10 tracks involves both original and remixed ones and some reworks, however, all thoroughly rotating around Roberto Polo and Sergio Treviño aka Dj Queco`s collaborative project Club Comfort. Club Comfort`s original sound is based upon gritty indie electronic, volatile chillwave tuning, and electro pop progressions, however, remix makers will make it amenable to more diverse electro pop and stroboscope-lighted and autotuned robot pop touch. The remixers on it are the collective`s label mates like Mersey Hot Springs, DJ Golonsh, Sr. Amable, White Ninja, and Mockingbird. The issue includes enough of highlights to be deemed a top notch. The godfather of the release is an excellent Mexican experimental pop/rock label, Delhotel Records.

Dancing Deadlips + Potworow - Buffalo Bill's Defunct (2014)

  • Spoken word
  • Sound poetry
  • Dark ambient
  • Noir music
  • Avant-garde
  • No Wave
  • Experimentalism
  • Microtonal

Comment: the Poland-residing Dancing Deadlips` rationale is based upon gloomy and noir-laden soundscapes and persuasive storytelling getting their inspiration at the fringes No Wave movement and gothic/neoclassical music. This time they issued a composition, Buffalo Bill`s Defunct featuring Potworow. Indeed, it is heavily crawling and horrendously grumbling thereby adding to the air of impending threat and awe. By the way, the lyrics is based upon Buffalo Bill's Defunct by E.E. Cummings, a prominent representative of the 20th poetry.

Huron – Social Engines (2006)

  • IDM
  • Space techno
  • Downtempo
  • Avant-techno
  • Experimental techno
  • Deep techno

Comment: this 12-track issue was the starting point for the Berlin-based records Crazy- Language. Indeed, the choice was very successful due to hovering sublime atmosphere and mesmerized rhythm shuffles on the whole. Huron provides glacial ice-alike relaxing backgrounds variegated with more sophisticated rhythmic patterns, brooding panoramas, angular electronic overthrows and even robot pop-induced samples. In artist`s soundscape there can be perceived influences amounting to Autechre, Kraftwerk, Detroit techno scene, and then actual-IDM artists rather than the European club music scene. In a word, it is a fairly profound listening experience which is worth to be remembered and honoured with new listening times once again.

Hox Vox – Suffer (2013)

  • Avant-prog
  • RIO
  • Alternative dance
  • Crossover
  • Synth-rock
  • Leftfield
  • Electro-rock
  • Art rock

Comment: talented avant-garde/prog-man, conceptualist, multimedia functionary, lonely wolf Gianluca Missero has been cheering up the listener during the last 5-6 years with a numerous of albums. Missero`s music is an amalgamation of different aspects, though, it seems his soundscape has changed in a way to afford more dodges and dashes toward the future on. Suffer is a sufficient instance of it – mandatory rock in opposition`s elements used to intersect with Latin sounds, electronic and dance music facets, concrete music and…a pure sexual intercourse (Desire). Mostly all of that used to be performed offhand and laid down in some seconds. Moreover, Missero has positioned himself very close and very far to the epicentre of pop music at the same time. Call it compelling impulsiveness.

Amitron_7 - Come Ye Sinners to the Gospel (2014)

  • Electronic pop
  • Easy listening
  • Indietronica
  • Downtempo
  • Sampledelic
  • Chilltronica
  • Nu jazz

Comment: I can remember for the English musician Amitron 7`s issue The Anton Phase Electro Clockwork Menagerie released in 2009 under Enough Records. It truly ate into my mind. However, the recent issue is a vast, 19-track one involving lots of musical and stylistic elements – from brooding electronic and indie mixed hums, entertaining spoken word and concrete music samples to sinuous nu jazz/fusion-alike jitters, blissful easy listening moments, some haunting and spaced-out blended flickers and a little disconcerted downbeat-induced decelerations. Some improvised moments from the ending part can be found from there. Indeed, the album expands and flourishes providing many moments worth to be arrived at. At times Amitron_7`s music does somewhat reminisce the early 80s in Estonia due to such fusion/jazz rock group as Kaseke. The result is a remarkable chill-out/fusion/electro-jazz release – actually it is far more than just the sum of its ingredients.   In conclusion, music is the music fans` gospel and Come Ye Sinners to the Gospel is an array within it.

Tracing Arcs – Wasteland (2014)

  • Trip-hop
  • Jungle
  • Downtempo
  • Mood music
  • Alternative pop
  • Remixes
  • Nu jazz
  • Soul
  • Alternative dance
  • Cinematic

Comment: Fran Kapelle, and Paul H Addie provide a subtle trip-hop album, of 10 tracks presented there are 7 original ones and 3 are remixes. The favourite (and fortunately overwhelming) element within the duo`s soundscape is a sustaining synergy between Fran`s soothing (sometimes sinister, though) vocal submission and Paul`s haunting yet somehow blissful instrumentation – which is a blend of either relatively rough or caressingly hovering guitar chords, cinematic synths and bold yet suggestive rhythm sequencing. In other words, it can be compared with the situation when you drift along in your dream and all what you can see there seems to be so hyper-realistic and bewitching. The listener`s feels will be overshadowed by such a kind of magic. At times you might feel it is not an exemplar of trip-hop at all but an example coming out of the witch house genre. One of the best music issues in 2014.

Aden Ôhm - La Loi De Morphine (2014)

  • Industrial techno
  • Dark electro
  • Alternative dance
  • Raggamuffin
  • Crossover
  • Dubstep
  • Thrill and bass
  • Martial industrial
  • Experimentalism
  • Breakcore
Comment: Aden Ôhm is a prolific producer from Caen, France whose sound used to rely on industrial music, dub echoes and electronic experiments. Indeed, same can also be ascribed to this 8-track issue. More concretely, the album involves lots of contrast-y aspects extending from harsh industrial brooding, thrill and bass-relied rabidity, electro/industrial rock-like intensity, quirky experimental electronica and martial industrial overthrows to moody raggamuffin-alike dancing and more sedate dub-blended hovers. The issue contains lots of different rhythms, however, most of them abound in incisive and raspy sonic frequencies and patterns. Gloomy and flaming.

Útidúr - [BadPanda051] Útidúr (2010)

  • Baroque pop
  • Chamber pop
  • Indie pop
  • Art pop
  • Balkan folk
  • Epic
  • Alternative pop

Comment: Útidúr is an Icelandic combo whose a pair of tracks are taken from the album This Mess We`ve Made (2010). More concretely, it is a spellbinding listening because of providing cinematic chamber/baroque/Balkan folk/pop waltzes and chirping male-female interactive singing (Fisherman´s Friend), and on the other side, diving deeply into subtle melancholy which is epic and lamentable simultaneously (Grasping for Thoughts). The group have hinted to be influenced by such artists as Angelo Badalamenti, Calexico, Beirut, Ennio Morricone, however, they have managed to add their own, northern touch to the aforementioned artists` sound.
