Greg Bird & Flamingo Flame - 2006 (2012)

9.4

/Baroque pop, Dream pop, Experimental indie, Art pop, Electronic pop, Sunshine pop, Chamber pop, Post-punk/

Comment: undoubtedly Giant Manilow, the Birmingham-related artist is one of the greatest labels all around the world which used to house bands like The Shalfonts, Shocked Elevator Family, Yellobelly, The Reverends, Vampire Cop, The Home Stretch, Bryn Bowen, and Greg Bird & Flamingo Flame. Similarly to the other artists of the label an album of the last named collective (duo) sheds light upon different music styles veering away from baroque-esque thoughfulness and artful frills (therefore qetting quite close to Scott Walker, and David Sylvian, for instance) and murky post-punk/gothic rock/dark wave-alike dredging to insouciance kind of sunshine electronica and pronounced guitar chirps and spatial reverberations in emotions and yearning. In a word, it is enough right to suppose that these 6 tracks represented over there do have higher artistic quality than those first 6 pieces ranked up in the UK single chart top at the time.

Anitek - Calm & Collect Vol.1 (2012)

FMA

9.0

/Crossover, Chillout, Alternative pop, Nu jazz, Trip-hop, Hip-hop, Breaks, Mood music/

Comment: a brand new one by a prolific master of chillout music called Anitek can easily be described in the terms of crossover music. More profoundly, his soundscape includes a lot of hints at many directions. Nevertheless, this 9-piece album used to be craftily balanced drifting moderately in between trip-hop/hip-hop frills and clearly framed acoustic guitar pop, gritty nu jazz/and smooth jazz visions and a little muddy blues-tinged templates. It seems to be an especially fine listening during the late hours of a day.

Rymdkraft - Kantarelle

[Teaser of the day] Troy Schafer - Hail, True Body

[Teaser of the day] Crooked Necks - Streets With Teeth

Nicolas Joseph Roncea - Impossible Roncea EP (2012)

Yo!

9.4

/Indie folk, New Weird Italy, Psych-folk, Acid folk, Art folk, Chamber folk, Singer-songwriter, DIY, Dream folk, Folk indie/

Comment: there is a handful of tracks spreaded out over 19 minutes. The affective, mostly dreamy vocal side on it is interlaced with sublime sonic manipulations-electronic effects and exciting guitar fingerpicks/and arpeggios and well composed guitar riffs. Emotionally it is rather depressive than soothing, though some parts on it sound more relieving due to their orchestrated magic dust. In any cases, Roncea (born in 1987) can be compared with such Italian experimental/indie folk musicians as (Carlo) Barbagallo, Distape, Artwood, Emme, Nick Rivera, Winstonmcnamara, and Menion.

Jabsasonic - Kupittaa Dub (2001)

9.5

/Dub, Post rock, Epic, Art rock, Crossover, Experimental rock/

Comment: these 228 seconds are up there to instigate the dreams of the listener through subtle dub rhythms and spacious, symphonic guitar magnitudes. Art rock/post rock meets Jamaica, though, the composition is inspired by the environment of the Kupittaa railway station. Behind the project is Jarmo Lundgren, the musician/rhythm guitar player from Finland. Delicious and catchy.

Hooves - Minimus EP (2012)

9.4

/Shoegazetronica, Experimental indie, Americana, Free folk, Poptronica, Art pop, Chillwave, Electronic pop, Glo-fi/

Comment: undoubtedly this set of 4 tracks is an intriguing one created by Daniel Kolpin from New York, USA. He merges modern sonic tendencies into a pleasing whole with the quite illustrating name. Blissed-out synths are mixed up with anthemic vocal lines, catchy bass sequences, and chiming guitar-based choppiness. It embraces masterfully the parts from such styles as Americana, NWA, glo-fi/chillwave, shoegaze, poptronica, and even exotica pop. More concretely, there can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Monster Rally, Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Youarehere, Grizzly Bear, Bilinda Butchers etc. Kolpin`s music used to invigorate and calm down simultaneously. Eminent work by any means.

htrspltn - All Your Flowers Have Blossomed (2012)

9.3

/Ambient techno, Experimental electronica, Avant-electronica, Downbeat/

Comment: this batch of 8 tracks comes out from Ulan-Ude, Siberia, Russia which stylistically might be tagged as cosmic electronic disco because it is made up of reversed vocal bits, atmospheric gliding, a little glowering thudding, however, all these elements are interlaced with each other in an organic way (sometimes the artist exploits concrete sounds either). In a word, all these vibrations used to be in full swing being frequently abstract and emotive at the same time.

8/30/2012

PAS - Early Works (2012)

 Krep

9.2

/Noise rock, Psychedelia, Psych-rock, Avant-rock, Improvised music, Krautrock, No Wave, Avant-garde, Experimental rock/

Comment: this handful of pieces is an instance of knee-deep psychedelia and noise full of resounding loops, lush noise walls, shrieking and buffoonish vibes, beeping barge signals and other weird and abstract, mainly repetition-heavy sonic patterns. At times it sounds like a group originating from the No Wave scene (a la Suicide), at times like an ensemble which does have similarities with the Japanese noise/psychedelia scene (a la Acid Mothers Temple), at times like a krautrock or improvised noise ensemble. In a word, it is a sort of trance chiming somehow in a majestic way.

[Teaser of the day] Bark Bark Disco - Give Me Back My Heart

[Teaser of the day] Automassage - So...Yes

Marcel Pequel - From One To Nine (2012)

FMA

9.0

/Modern classical, Minimal, Mood music, Piano music/

Comment: there are 9 emotionally accentuated piano tracks which are exceeded over 17 minutes. More concretely, by the word of the author it reflects upon a wide array of feelings and sentiments, some of them are positive, some of them quite negative ones. More concretely, these negative experiences seem somehow to be related to lonesomeness. However, first of all, it is a minimally treated moody composition, full of distinct corners to allowing the listener to be alone and  stay in his/her contemplation. In a nutshell, it is an instance of the 20th century classical music.

Alessio Oissela - Avant-garde Jouets (2012)

9.1

/Electro pop, Electronic pop, New Wave, Synth pop/

Comment: this 8-track issue consists of uplifting, compelling electro breaks and bubblegum gears which used to merge organically into each other. On the other side, there are some exceptions either where AO`s electro-tinged beat-terrorism seems to be connected with New Wave/synth pop aesthetics and Cocteau Twins-esque reverberations. Indeed, this music does hints at avant-garde music because of revealing its poignant and a little exceeding nature. The Project can be compared with the likes of Drexiya, Dopplereffekt, Arpanet.

Gobi Bear - LP EP (2012)

8.8

/Indie pop, Indie folk, Folk indie, Singer-songwriter, Alt-folk/

Comment: the Portugese artist Diogo aka Gobi Bear presents a 12-track issue which is made up of intimate folk and bucolic indie fingerpicking beyond it is laid charming singing manner and some melodica-alike ornaments in some tracks. All these songs are short-running snippets ending up approximately at 20 minutes in total. It is a lovely track which is appreciated for its own sake.

Killed By A Word - Kids With No Life Manuals (2012)

Lastfm

9.2

/Downtempo, Shoegazetronica, Post-rock, Experimental rock, Experimental electronica, Organic electronica, Ambient, Crossover/

Comment: this set of 6 tracks seems to be embarked on at the point where Seefeel finished off once in the mid of 90s. It involves lots of gleaming synthesizer lines which are adorned with suggestive hisses and organic noises and also providing soundtrack-close tremors. All the whole used to ascend and descend in an epic way. Stylistically the album can be considered a crossover album which drifts in between emotive electronica, ambient and propulsive alternative rock. The project comes of out Tunisia.

8/26/2012

[Teaser of the day] saanasessions - Aki Empire

[Teaser of the day] Derek Clegg - Step

Cold Womb Descent - Rise of Ldaovh (2012)

9.7

/Dystopbient, Avant-garde, Epic, Electro-acoustic, Abstract, Dark ambient, Space music, Shoegazetronica, Crossover, Post-rock/

Comment: this sophomore album is the follow-up to CWD`s great self-titled album based on glimmering cosmic shadowplays and intricate obscurity. Indeed, the brand new one is a worthwhile trace which dovetails these aforementioned elements with the tendencies of shoegaze and post-rock music. This 10-track issue can be considered a cogent trinity consisting of exulting dark ambient-esque choppiness, majestic synthesized layers and blazing shoegaze-infiltrated noise washes. On the other side, the release will be ended up in a more bleak, abstract electro-acoustic and analogue electronica mixed environment. In a word, it feeds the listener`s envisioning and  relieves you anxiety because of providing a place where you could escape. If to compare it to the other artists, however, some parallels can be drawn upon the likes of Bing Satellites, Our Subatomic Earth, Caustic Reverie, J. Dujardin, saanasessions, aboombong. Or is it an example of how MBV`s third album proper might have sounded? Very special by any means.

8/25/2012

Kinskop - Home Folder (2010)

9.1

/Post-rock, Remixes, Indietronica, Art pop, Ambient pop, Downtempo, DIY/

Comment: at the first sight this batch of tracks  seems to composed of ragged-edged rhythms which is mixed up with lo-fi/DIY attitude and electro-acoustic tendencies in a loos way. However, by listening to it onward the result can be considered a charmingly flawed vision being spotted upon the realm of post-rock/chamber rock and indietronic horizons where wiry yet bewitching guitar chords are interlaced with lush concrete sounds and sometimes more ambient/and downtempo-related progressions (in a remix track, entitled Carwindow Creatures by Vertical67).

Eleanor Friedberger - Epitonic saki Session (2011)

8.8

/Alternative rock, Singer-songwriter, Live session/

Comment: Eleanor Friedberger (born in 1976) is one half of a famous family duo, called The Fiery Furnaces. who this time provide her 7-track set within the frame of Epitonic saki Sessions. In comparison to the aesthetics of her parental group EF`s sound is more simplistic - it is without orchestrated bores, sonic tricks and sound effects and conceptual frameworks. In a word, she is a singer-songwriter now. Nevertheless her songs are poignant, dashing and tumultuous. And by its lyrics it includes the hint at Soft Machine, the legendary art/avant-rock band coming out of the so-called Canterbury Scene.

[Teaser of the day] Azeda Booth - Samoan Girls

[Teaser of the day] Tomsk IDM Composers - Bitchy-Witchy

Coma Cinema - Stoned Alone (2010)

8.0

/Indie rock, Chamber pop, Singer-songwriter, Lo-fi, Alternative pop/

Comment: Coma Cinema is the solo project by Mat Cothran whose 13-track album involves indie rock facades which are spiced up with some lo-fi tendencies and chamber pop glimpses. In a word, it is a nice listening, though, he undoubtedly has produced some more persuasive albums (Blue Suicide; Baby Prayers).

Chimney Fish - Tribal Lace (2009)

8.8

/Ethereal pop, Minimalism, Post pop, Avant-pop, Dream pop/

Comment: Chimney Fish is the one-woman-project of Annie Culver  whose album Tribal Lace used to rotate around fragile "singing" which in fact is subjected to vowel effects surrounded with thick hiss carcasses, however, chiming like a tribute issue to the sirens, who in imagery used to be mystical creatures with seductive singing. Suggestive and otherworldly. By thinking of kindred souls there can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Elisabeth Fraser, Iron Like Nylon, Niobe, Meredith Monk, H Stewart.

Ludwig Maravilla - Dentro del Vientre de la Bestia (2012)

9.0

/Experimental electronica, Crossover, 8-bit, Glo-fi, Chiptune, Chillwave, Indie, Breakcore, Avant-garde/

Comment: this 14-track album originates from Mexico, Mexico which takes on refined electronica which in turn are backdropped with different stylistical touches. Indeed, it involves the elements of fascinating noise, glimmering indie and chillwave, hirsute chiptune and breakcore-esque beats. Now and then Ludwig Maravilla has no hesitation to anguish up with thudding bass lines and to calm down with uplifting bubblegum disco beats and world music-infiltrated turns.

Bosques de mi Mente - 20 de Abril (2012)

9.0

/Modern classical, Instrumental, Mood music, Piano/

Comment: similarly to his previous albums the Spanish-based musician does experiment with lone piano chords which are amplified and sustained by fine microscopic noises and arpeggio-laden shuffles and gritty concrete sounds. By its moody side the 44-minute composition is immersed with melancholy and cogent longing aspects.

8/20/2012

[Teaser of the day] Violeta Pivnkakkara - Tuuli Ulvoo Yöllä

[Teaser of the day] Collapse - Speed Metal from the Grave

(exitpost) - Echo, Location (2012)

8.9

/New Weird America, Free folk, Americana, Indie folk, Art pop, Avant-pop, Experimental pop/

Comment: this 5-piece album is built on broad vocal magnitudes and accentuated singing and atmospheric folk/indie instrumentation which frequently are accentuated with fabulous brass forays and lush ascensions and crescendos therefore sounding truly like a fairy tale. By the lyrics it contains of lots of references toward nature and its objects which might be interpreted as a hint at the escapism. Ken Harman & Co`s outlet reminds of  the oeuvres of Grizzly Bear, Foxes In Fiction, Coma Cinema, and Dirty Projectors, for instance.

Fennesz - On Invisible Pause (2012)

9.5

/Conceptual, Folktronica, Post-rock, Experimental electronica, Modern claasical/

Comment: Fennesz (born in 1962) is Christian Fennesz, the Austrian sound explorer/electronic musician who does not to be introduced for the melomans, though. There is presented just one lengthy composition which will be ended up at 48.13. Furthermore, it is a conceptual publication thought for one dance performance. More profoundly, he makes up layers of sparse, digitally sounding motives and on the other side these elements are backdropped with massive bass thudding. Stylistically it veers away from Borealia-tinged ambient and fine glitchtronica to more post-rock-ish epicness (indeed, undulating glitch-y soundscapes are seamlessly fused with static but mesmerizing guitar washes) or there is up more soothing sonic gliding to fade away below the sky. In the final part Fennesz will enter into the realm of subtle folktronica. In a nutshell, it sounds like a hallmark of today`s classical music.

Makunouchi Bento - Himette (2003)

9.3

/Electro pop, IDM, Experimental electronica, Mood music, Ambient techno/

Comment: MB is a duo from Romania whose 13 piece album`s cornerstones are angular IDM beats and loosely dangling electro rhythms which in turn are embellished with glitch-y dust and industrial vapour. On the other side, the album includes fascinating emotive narratives and joyous reverberations or used to get involved in more experimental exercises (with shuffling drums and abrasive guitar riffs or built on voices which are reversed and treated) or exploring atmospherical realms with the help of  rhythmic structures and spoken word parts. In a nutshell, the listener can say the whole is a craftily balanced album drifting in between technological level and solid emotive approach.

8/19/2012

[Teaser of the day] Plastic Jazz Orchestra - Bye Bye Altai

[Teaser of the day] R Stevie Moore - Reefer

Troy Schafer – Supreme Happiness Forever (2012)

 9.8

/Drone, Ambient drone, Epic, Chamber music, Modern classical, Experimental electronica, Avant-garde, Avant-electronica, Post-rock, Noise, Experimentalism, Crossover/

Comment: Troy Schafer (Madison, Wisconsin, USA) offers up a set of 3 pieces which is highly recommendable. More profoundly, his vanguard-ish, violin-led soundscapes are craftily tense, accentuated with different, massively droning keys thus getting close to such masters as Tony Conrad, and John Cale, though, he is idiosyncratic in his creative process (The Breath Of Life Is But A Kiss). Or on the other side, he is able to leave the academical tradition and to get involved in more poppy traditions (flirtations with Americana, noise and epic post-rock-ish seeds at Hail, True Body). TS`s soundscape is hell-ish and solemn at the same time. Apparition is an example of how classical tradition meets successfully modern days thereby establishing new frontiers and frameworks for the listener to understand music on a new level. In a word, it is a very fine crossover issue.

Automassage - Saxophone EP (2012)

9.4

/Doom rock, Covers, Acid rock, psychedelia, Experimental rock, Noise rock, Doomgaze, Fusion, Avant-rock, Experimental indie, Improvised music/

Comment: Automassage is a quartet which consists of Austrian and Slovenian musicians. Their 4-track album is issued on an Israeli label, entitled Birdsong. The compositions are made up of massive doom-ish guitar washes, buried a little threatening vocal layers, poignant drumming, and acidic synth whiffs, though, all these layers seem to be tied with each other in a loose way (it is OK anyway). More detailedly, if you like the following categorization, you would tag it "doomgaze" (though, it used to have reference points and hints at fusion, psychedelia/acid rock, and improvised deliberations either. Bardo Pond meets My Bloody Valentine meets Mahavishnu Orchestra is one way of how to approach the group. And there is no sign about saxophone! By the way, there are presented a pair of covers (Guns N` Roses` Get In the Ring; and - surprise, surprise - Holy Night). It is an astonishing release by any senses. Grrrt!

Testet Ölt - Untitled (2012)

9.4

/Post-rock, Instrumental rock, Avant-rock, Improvised music, Ambient rock, Psychedelic rock, Alternative, Epic/

Comment: Testet Ölt is a collective from Temerin, Vojvodina, Serbia who provide a handful of tracks which used to wobble somewhere in between composed and improvised tendencies. More concretely, TÖ`s soundscape can stylistically be considered a hallmark of psychedelically treated post-rock whereas there is no vocal lines but instead of it involves a loads of key changes and half-crescendos oozing out of the slots backdropped with dreamy, at times even haunting synths, cohesive guitar lines, and mesmerizing drum sequences. There are some exceptions (Dèli Bàb) where Pink Floyd-esque influences are withdrawn and guitars and traded to vibraphones (or its emulators) thus reminding rather of the likes of The Dylan Group, Mice Parade, Mercury Program, and Tristeza. Another exception, called Biztos Alkony used to get quite close to the main theme of Twin Peaks, however, amalgamating it with solid guitar chords and catchy effects and tumultuous drum breaks now and then. The result is superb having enough potential to get a classic status sometime in the future.

[Teaser of the day] Siiri Sisask - Ma Ei Maga Ma Ei Söö (Käärkäsi Edit)

Siiri Sisask - Ma Ei Maga Ma Ei Söö (Käärkäsi Edit)

All their broken hearts – A tribute album to Julie Doiron (2003)

9.2

/Indietronica, Compilation, Improvised music, Covers, Alt-folk, Indie folk, Post-rock, Folk indie, Singer-songwriter/

Comment: this 28-track cover album is dedicated to the (French) Canadian singer-songwriter Julie Doiron by an Belgian-Canadian record, called Paper Heart, however, stylistically veering away from more or less whimsical indie/alt-folk contemplations and straightforward punk-ish forays and freely composed off-kilter appearances to soothing electric piano-led soft pop and fine electronica-tinged indie pop/post-rock examples and heartfelt, intimate singer-songwriter-ism. There are represented tracks by such artists as Snailhouse, Neil Haverty, Tino, Melochrome, nude, Call me Loretta, MEN, Evie, The Radiators (if to name some of them only). In a nutshell, the miscellany is on the ball.

Linear Bells - An Island (2012)

9.5

/Ambient, Glitchtronica, Epic, Abstract, Post-rock, Soundscapes, Modern classical, Experimental rock, Glitch ambient, Musique concrete, Chamber music/

Comment: this peculiar, 7-track issue comes out of France embarking on a journey with a whiff of concrete sounds which later will be interlaced with lone, reverb-laden guitar or piano chords and at times sparse, at times more swelling glitch-y noises, being embellished with fine ambient and drone-esque panoramas above it. On the other side, stylistically the set used to wobble in between gritty experimental electronica, anthemic yet somewhat restraint (or still life-ish) post-rock-ish aspirations, ang gliding drone and ambient-ish soundscapes. If you are intended to search for some kindred souls then I recommend to listen to Pygmalion-era Slowdive, Natural Snow Buildings, Pan American, Tim Hecker, Sejdman, Aboombong, for example.

Galvanic Elephants - Modern Superhero + Numbers (2012)

9.2

/Alternative rock, Soft rock, Dream pop, Dance rock, Electro-indie/

Comment: Galvanic Elephants is a quartet from Tartu, Estonia who did convey these two tracks for the auditory approximately four months ago. Modern Superhero contains a straightforward punch based on guitars played walls and and slightly longing vocal lines (in a word, it involves the catchy refrain). Numbers is a more electronically coated and vocally a little bit autotuned danceable reverie searching for its location somewhere in between Keane, and Radiohead. However, the track can be considered an instance of the contemporary soft rock scene. By listening to the issue you can hark back to the post-punk and gothic rock heyday, though, Galvanic Elephants used to produce their music in a somewhat more poppy way. Ultimately there can be concluded this pair of tracks are produced and accomplished in a great way. In addition to it I recommend listen to the likes of Badass Yuki, Stones & Holes, and The Tallinn Daggers either.

Molly Ringworm - DOGSPIT (2012)

8.9

/Harsh noise, Avant-garde, Experimentalism, Psycho-acoustic, Non-music, Freeformfreakout, Weird, Avant-electronica, Acousmatics, Dada music, Sampledelic/

Comment: the reason why I approve this album is because of it seals up lots of information in one time unit. Concurrently the listener can perceive a loads of elements appearing over there. The 3-piece course involves lushly howling sample contents, gobbling noise washes, amusingly treated electronics, and psyched-out occurrences. It chimes like a monument for insanity or a reproduction in the vein of real life.

8/16/2012

[Teaser of the day] Boyish - Sunshot

Cantaloup - The Sirens Sleep (2011)

9.2

/Post-rock, Indietronica, Organic electronica, Art pop, Chamber rock, Folktronica/

Comment: behind Cantaloup hides himself Thomas Peters who had issued two excellent albums on Aerotone before it. Similarly to his previous oeuvres the new album is a masterful blend of shimmering electronica and fine indie pop and epic post-rock-ish and chamber rock-ish tendencies which may be compared with the likes of Wixel, Anois, Turnus, and Muhr. The listener can find out some teasers from the issue (for instance, Rest, and Echoes) featuring Alke Finn`s voice. In a word, you can feel happy with this 7-track issue.

Skai Nine - Not a Worry in the World (2012)

8.8

/Downtempo, Chillwave, Glo-fi, Instrumental hip-hop, Crossover, Mood music/

Comment: there are up a pair of tracks which used to reflect upon different electronic music tendencies extending from majestic glo-fi panoramas and melancholic downtempo to instrumental hip-hop and moody vibes.

Cagey House - 1902 (2009)

9.3

/Art pop, Electronic music, Spoken word, Sampledelic, Sound collage, Avant-garde, Weird pop, Hauntology, Cut and paste, Library music, Post-pop, Avant-pop, Experimental pop, Spoken word/

Comment: Cagey House is Dave Keifer, a musician from Baltimore, USA whose most albums are made up of the collected sounds/samples only. He has issued a lot of releases neither of them happened to be mediocre or obtuse. In any cases, there are presented 6 short-running glimpses which do sound like soundtracks for possible velvety art house movies or a performance of the puppet theatre. More concretely, these compositions are a little bit haunting, a little bit buffoonish, a little bit beeping, a bit everything. In a word, the result is highly intriguing and precious to be listened again and again.

8/14/2012

[Teaser of the day] Gold Panda - MPB

The Plasmas - Noentiendo (2008)

9.2

/Technical metal, Chiptune, Synth fusion, Crossover, Experimental metal, Symphonic metal/

Comment: this set of mostly instrumental tracks is made up of highly swaying guitar riffs, thick rhythm sequences, however, which sometimes used to incorporate the Russian-related motives (though the project originates from Chile). The result is a frantic merry-go-round rotating around technically played chords, amusing chiptune-ish electronica. Moreover, there are represented some examples which take on so-called regatta pop synth fusion propulsions thus reminding of the regatta competition in Tallinn as a part of the Moscow Olympics. Indeed, all these aforementioned elements used to be in full swing.

Rabbit-O-Matic - Particles of a Comet (2000)

9.0

/Ambient, Soundscapes, Minimal/

Comment: indeed, my comment is about a comet (or track) which apparently hints at aspiration to get a trip in the outer space at least in the next 322 seconds. More concretely, the flight is a soothing and relieving one being surrounded with slightly resonating borders. In turn, these borderlines are composed of hissing vibrations and lofty dusty motion. In a word, in spite of being a heavily minimalist configuration it makes impact upon the listener.

Radio Royal - RRDL01 (2012)

9.6

/Avant-garde, Experimentalism, No Wave, Psycho-acoustic, Improvised music, Noise, Krautrock, Experimental electronica, Sound art, Psychedelia/

Comment: aarrghh, this 7-piece issue is an erratic blend of psychedelic and spaced-out propulsions, chameleonic improvisation sections, psychotic squeezing noise forays, mesmerizing repetition-heavy electronica, however, ideologically resulting from the tradition of early electronic days (regarding the academic or classical music circuits) and the synthesis-induced krautrock alchemy (Conrad Schnitzler, Roedelius-Moebius) and the tradition of NY, California and Chicago-based improvised noise and sound art (Big City Orchestra, Borbetomagus, Tuxedomoon, The Residents). Highly convincing and one of the most impressive albums in the year of 2012 indeed. In a word, it is holy madness.

8/13/2012

[Teaser of the day] Reverend Big O - Love Is A Two Headed Dog

Bark Bark Disco - Let's do this EP (2012)

9.0

/Alternative, Electro-indie, Indie pop/

Comment: this is a lovely set of 4 notches wherein throughout the course sustained guitar chords are mixed up with electro(nica)-tinged propulsions which in turn are intelaced with male and female mixed vocals. However, all the parts on the EP are suggestive, brisk and even compelling (especially a track, called Give Me Back My Heart filled with potency to hit). The main theme of the lyrics is spotted upon the complexity of relations and love. Nice listening.

H Stewart - GenreLess (2012)

9.4

/Avant-garde, Noise, Minimalism, Experimentalism, Microtonal, Ethereal pop, Ambient, Modern classical/

Comment: H Stewart is a musician from Kansas, USA who has issued a few albums under Clinical Archives before it (more concretely, regarding the first 100 albums of the Moscow-based cult label). However, her music can be considered an instance of ethereal pop made up of hovering ambient textures and sensitive vowel effects which by their shapes and timbre may remind of the aesthetics of Laurie Anderson, and Meredith Monk, for instance. On the other side, it is subjected to the concept of the minimalism, this way avoiding to be braw and joyous. There are a pair of astonishing compositions (Mindtown; SongBird) where haunting ambiance is amplified with fragile piano chords Furthermore, her compositions inwardly could even be classified as compulsive or obsessive. Now her soundscape is accentuated with the washes of massive yet lofty noise, or using the looping, glitch-y effects of a sampling unit, now it is more somber and even a little bit ghastly, however, searching for balance and also finding it. In a word, it is a distinctive, very special publication. It is like the touch of a butterfly causing an incessant array of waves thereby ultimately changing the world into a mysterious but better place around itself.

Tjolgtjar - Witchcrafts (2011)

9.1

/Death metal, Grindcore, Hardcore, Psych-metal, Surf pop, Crossover, Experimental metal, Avant-garde/

Comment: Dipsomaniac Records is keen on to issue such kind of music which is heavy, sharp, tense, frequently obscure, and emphatically cutting edge. However, the particular release of 9 compositions can be considered to get involved in a mutilated and deranged view of hard rock and metal which used to run on both fast and mid-tempo paces, hitting and biting. On the other side, however, such a kind of style is entitled as death metal today, though, incorporating a loads of the chirps of other musical styles. Mostly there can be found hints at grindcore, psych-rock/metal, hardcore. Furthermore, even some basics of the aesthetics of electronica and surf pop are to be pronounced at times over there. In a nutshell, lots of power and vital energy comes out from within it.

8/12/2012

[Teaser of the day] H Stewart - SongBird

Eufoteoria - Cookies (2011)

 8.8

/Electronic pop, Downbeat, Sampledelic, Breaks, Poptronica, Jungle, Crossover, Experimental electronica/

Comment: this batch of 8 quite shorty tracks concerns whimsical electronica which used to change its tonality over the course and providing the shuffling patterns of broken beats whereas the listener can discern manipulations with the rhythm length and deliberate stylistic variations (extending from jungle and brooding downbeat electronica to more brisk electro and pop inclined electronic endeavours and big beat thudding where music is frequently subjected to the algorithms of pitch effect and (other technological appearances) and permanent sampling activities. In a word, the result is intelligent and braw (and, indeed, euphoric at times).

Clavicula - Erosion (2011)

8.6

/Hard rock, Classical rock/

Comment: Clavicula, in general, is a bone locating in the upper part of the body. This is a quite fragile and easily breaking one, especially after falling down frontward from the heights (for instance, if you are riding on a bike or horse). An ensemble, called Clavicula used to be remarkably more powerful in their doings playing masculine, Spanish-sung rock on their 8-track issue. Basically their power comes out of the flirtation with the riffs of hard rock-ish guitars and lighter metal music appearances or being a little keen on the glamorous charm of hair rock at times. They do represent classical hard rock reminiscent of Van Halen, and Led Zeppelin (of course!), for instance. This is such kind of music which had been popular throughout 1980s. Enjoyable.

Brothertiger/Soft Lightning Remix EP (2012)

9.4

/Chillwave, Indie dance, Glo-fi, Dreamwave, Chillwave, Post-pop, Alternative dance, Experimental indie, Remixes, Conceptual/

Comment: there are represented a pair of tracks, remixes, and artists who take on catchy blissful electronica/indietronic developments being supported with spaced-out vocal lines, dreamy synth templates and poignant constitution in their aesthetical expressions. Furthermore, it is supposable both for using in your headphones and on the dancefloor. In a nutshell, if you are searching for an example of the ideal pop concept then there it is over you. Is it an instance of today`s gilded disco appearance?

KRAM RAN _ HIATUS from I'm Trying I'm Trying I'm Trying on Vimeo.

Surrent and A Useful Idiot - Videodrone (2009)

9.4

/Space rock, Post-rock, Experimental rock, Avant-rock/

Comment: this album was issued on Modicum Of Silence, the recording label which has publicated a lots of releases by artists who are particularly related to State Ohio. It might be the most famous artist appeared under their umbrella is Brothertiger, the chillwave/glo-fi representative. Stylistically there are represented the demarcation of post-metal, experimental/avant-electronica, glo-fi, free folk, innovative post-rock, whimsical indie rock, and conceptual/sound art. However, this set of 7 notches concerns a kind of experimental rock journey which is imbued with spacey, delayed layers of guitar chords and repetitive patterns-loops surrounded by resonating space around it. Sometimes the layers are pronounced by some signal-alike reverberations originating in barges and the analogue synthesis and treatment of electronica, thus approaching rather to the realm of avant/experimental electronic music. In conclusion, it is a spiritual appearance indeed.

Richard Lainhart - Introduction to Analog Synthesis (2012)

 /Lecture, Sound synthesis, Conceptual, Music/

Comment: Introduction to Analog Synthesis was a lecture performed at the Pocono Skies festival at the Shawnee Playhouse, Pennsylvania, USA in the Pocono mountains in the Spring of 2010. This one-off festival featured performances, collaborations, workshops and lectures over the two day festival weekend. Richard Lainhart presented this lecture Saturday afternoon May 16th, 2010 to a crowd of enthusiastic synthesists and electronic musicians. More profoundly, the particular constituents, basic parts and technics (sine waves, amplifiers, amplitude, sawtooth waves, envelope effects, oscillators, the types of noise and sonic filters, square wave, pitch effects etc) of sound synthesis are showcased throughout the course of a hour, however, all these details are exemplified by the sounds of soft synths which do emulgate exactly the sounds of analog synthesizers. However, the listener is backed up by hints of how to produce electronic music. A label, called Ethereal Live, dedicated the issue in honour of Richard Lainhart (February 14, 1953 - December 30, 2011). Mandatory by any senses.

krill.minima - Urlaub Auf Balkonien (2007)

/Dub-tech, Experimental electronica, Dubtronica, Tech-dub, Crossover/

Comment: by my opinion, this set of 9 notches takes on a journey through grey-tinged landscapes which are covered with essentially thick dub vapour and hazy electronic whiffs at any point of the location of the issue. The compositions are lengthy and profound, though, being without any suggestive turns and striking forays. Instead of it the subject is up there to be manipulated through soothing currents and discursive oscillations which foray into the subconsciousness of the listener.
