Death Grips – Fashion Week (2015)

/Hip-hop, Breaks, Art music, Industrial electro, Cyber-hop, Synth electro, Cyberpunk, Leftfield, Breakcore, Alternative dance, Mood music/

Comment: this is Death Grip`s quite surprising, instrumental album of consisting of 14 compositions at a length of 47-48 minutes issued at the start of January in 2015. At the beginning of listening to it this did not impose on me because of lacking MC Ride`s frantic recitation and dizzy howling over labyrinthine and spastic cadences. However, later being conformed at their new format I discovered new intriguing shadows and incisive rhythms structures in the Sacramento-based combo´s music. Interestingly, their stylistic approach and emotional touch is changed due to a lack of vocals in the concept. Although the pads take mostly on murky sounds and highly iterative rhythm progressions, the result is somewhat more freed of unagitated noises and even providing some light-hearted melodic motives and even soothing synth progressions moving upward into the clouds (more remarkably at hockey organ sample based Runway N (at a length of 2.42), and Runway D – where synth electro progressions are interwoven with glacial IDM-tinged techno rhythms). Furthermore, there are some tracks which could be considered examples of cyberpunk/metal/grind music and experimenting with more artsy sounds here and there. On the other side, by production side, all the sounds laid down here are properly accentuated and filled up. Eventually it can say this soundtrack styled issue is fairly accomplished having inner dynamics and power to grow gradually on the listener. It is one of the most galvanising issues in 2015 so far. You, guys, are simply amazing. I shall have to leave from listening to this monster, however, it is a really disturbing fact for me. Aarrghhhh!!!

Kane West – Western Beats (2014)

/Hip-hop, Electro, Game music, Urban music, Breaks, Nu disco, Rap/

Comment: Kane West is a hip-hop musician from London, Great Britain being a part of PC Music. The artist`s 7-track issue is a quite one dimensional issue based mostly on game music induced incisive rhythms which sounds in a quite primitive way. Of course, it does not mean at all the release is somehow inferior or simplistic. Vice versa, those sampled and surprisingly bursting sounds here and there are a part of danceable sequencing replete with electro and nowadays disco rhythms. In short, effect loaded sounds are tightly interwoven with solid programming and spiky rhythms and low bass undercurrents and soulful female singing and some harsher shrieks in the meantime. Enjoyable outing indeed.

Sunburned Hand of the Man - Three Lobed/WXDU Day Show, Hopscotch Music Festival, King's, Raleigh, NC (2014)

/New Weird America, Live session, Drone rock, Krautrock, Space rock, Avant-rock, Psychedelic rock, Experimental rock, Improvised music/

Comment: it is a great, 27-minute live session by the cult Massachusetts combo Sunburned Hand of the Man whose music reflects upon the interplay between noise and silence, between “natural” instrumentation and processed electronic sounds. It is a perfect sort of relaxation music due to outstretched droning, spaced-out guitar drenched trajectories, motorik rhythm engines and delayed crescendos and resigned incantations made up by Greta Svalberg. The result is a spellbinding trip through sonic magic. In addition to it I recommend listen to the likes of Vibracathedral Orchestra, Natural Snow Buildings, Ashtray Navigations, Kemialliset Ystävät, and Children Of The Drone.

Nils Frahm - Screws (2012)

/Modern classical, Piano music, Minimal, Post-classical/

Comment: Screws was recorded while Berlin, Germany based musician Nils Frahm was recovering from a thumb injury. The album includes volatile chord progressions and restrained motive developments played on the piano. Indeed, those motives spawned over there used to surface and then meander over lone landscapes and then disappear into nothing. It can say that Frahm´s goal is not to reach some goal in a direct sense but just to move on and provide moody impulses and moments. On the other side, the album`s sense can be considered a successful equilibrium between silence and sound.

All The Empires Of The World - CVRSVS (2014)

/Black metal, Trash metal, Epic doom, Neoclassical, Doom metal, Post-metal, Sludge metal/

Comment: this issue consists of two quite different parts – the first of them is mostly blackened and trashy doom progressions with the assistance of down-tuned string instruments and slowed down rhythmic patterns although providing some atmospheric glimpses and acute sonic experiments with low bass frequencies, epic doom hovers, and diverging light-hearted guitar strums added to the mix (especially Auckland). The second section is without guitars supported brutality – instead of it there are up exclusively prolonged keyboards based chords and flows and drumming experiments which used to intersect with silence and tranquility tightly surrounding or emitting from within it. Indeed, if to suggest to the first words on the album (more light, more light) then the purpose will be successfully fulfilled. In a word, listen to their version of the Beauty and the Beast.

VA & Leah Rosier – Irie Remix EP (2011)

/Raggamuffin, Remixes, Robot pop, Dub, Dancehall, Electronic pop/

Comment: Leah Rosier`s track Irie is mixed up or remade by different remixers like Not Easy, Speakah Productions ft. Natty d, Digikal Roots, Caballo & Neki Stranac, Monolow, and Bruno Tanmateos). Some remakes are more elliptically shaped, i.e dub-drenched, some are more dancehall-tinged, though, there are represented also robot/electro pop/trap glimpses and an off-kilter bagpipe based experiment. Indeed, by listening to it over here, temperature is rising and you get have sunshine in the music.

Mooval - By Immersion (2014)

/Dubstep, Experimental electronica, Ambient pop, Downtempo, Indietronica/

Comment: as the titles hint at it this 6-track album is made up of majestic ambient-alike panoramas, superficial electronic flickers and static still life which are backed up either by low bass frequencies (a la dubstep), or more perky downtempo and electronic indie and krautrock styled rhythms. More concretely, there are up such titles as Emanating Warmth, At Night The Salmon Move, Pretend To Faint, Written On Dust. All in all, the outlet is decent and highly worth to be listened to. At Lastm site you can find out such adjectives as “orgasm”, and “highness”.

Wladyslaw Komendarek – Trashy Bird (2012)

/Remixes, Electro pop, Progressive, Conceptual, Synth pop, Electronic pop, Synth funk, Kosmische Musik/

Comment: if to keep talking about Polish progressive music then there are up some representatives who are very worth to be remembered again. Czeslaw Niemen and Exodus ex-keyboardist Wladyslaw Komendarek are those musicians who are obviously well known among the progressive rock music fans. Both of them liked to improvise on synthesizers thereby their sound used to be a little bit more electronic and synthesized than an average progressive rock combo used to have. Trashy Bird contains a handful of tracks which are crafty remixes by such artists as Giro Arana, Futurospekcja, Marcin Cichy, Envee, and Teielte. Apparently Martin Cichy is the most prominent participant on it because of being a member of Ninja Tune related Skalpel collective. Indeed, the artists have hold down the initial element of the track and added something refreshingly new and catchy. Stylistically it extends from spaced-out synthpop and blissful vocoder-driven electro pop to musique concrete-infused downtempo progressions and catchy synth funk cadences. Indeed, there is up just one composition which reveals so many facets behind itself. Greatness.

LeeM – 404 Error EP(2013)

/Chilltronica, Alternative pop, Synth fusion, Indietronica, Mood music, Electronic pop, Synth funk/

Comment: London, UK-based Toby Leeming aka ANON aka LeeM´s 6-track issue is a graceful amalgamation of chirpy synth funk progressions and chilltronic anthems. Undoubtedly there are up some strong indie music influences which isn`t surprising at all regarding the British indie scene awesome tradition (for instance, Swings & Roundabouts getting quite close to Four Tet`s aesthetics; Amen is a mesmeric ambient tinged poptronic hover). Beatific synthesised plateaus used to rotate around funky paces in a spinning motion which in turn change their shape to create some new rhythmic patterns or seamlessly arrive at old ones in a way to prove diverting. In a word, the result is craftily balanced yet providing an effective found to the listener`s soul and body.

Elisa Luu – Shebeen (2014)

/Folktronica, Acid folk, Electronic, New Weird Italia/

Comment: Shebeen is the first single from Rome residing Elisabetta Luciani`s brand new album Enchanting Gaze. The single consists of manipulated sonic effects, catchy repeated folk chords, exuberant electronic hovers and ambient loaded panoramas. Undoubtedly she is an outstanding artist. For instance, I can remember for her album The time of waiting (2010, La bèl) which was a tumultuous but organic mix of spherical electronic music, spectral sound art, experimental rock influences and (modern) classical music. In a word, get her new album and enjoy it!

Dadalù – Internet (2013)

  • Hip-hop
  • Electro-hop
  • Electro pop
  • Digital soul
  • Alternative dance
  • Reggae-hop
  • Urban music
  • Remixes
Comment: Dadalù is a Santiago, Chilean female hip-hop artist who has issued a handful of albums during the last 3-4 years (all of them can be found from her and Free Music Archive site). This time all the attention is centred upon her single Internet. It might be that her single of cute hip-hop and decent electro pop mixed details is shadowed by other artists in the context. For instance, there are up some outstanding explorations of the composition. For instance, Deaf Shout Remix is a glimpse into a sublime electro pop compartment. Vaskular Remix talks in digital soul-drenched language, and Una Niña Malvada Remix`s flight of thought emerges due to heavily vocodered vocals and subtle sonic effects around it. Get a look on it!

Miami Slice – Brooklyn 2 Brooklyn EP (2014)

  • Electro house
  • Italo disco
  • House pop
  • Disco house
  • Mood music
  • Alternative dance
  • Club dance

Comment: one thing is truly sure at the moment - New Yorker Christian Montoya aka Decktonic aka Miami Slice came off in full. Undoubtedly Brooklyn 2 Brooklyn EP is his best release ever issued. It is fairly catchy and spellbinding sharing its place somewhere in between the territories of club dance and mood music. There are many ghosts in-flight. From Giorgio Moroder and Gino Soccio inspired Italo disco-based grooves and propulsions and more contemporary filter-heavy house dregs to volatile electro gears and cinematically orchestrated or briny pop house/disco oscillation frequencies. It is pure gold by any means. It might be even the best issue in 2014 so far.

Bongley Dead – Demo "3" (2014)

  • Alternative pop
  • Indie rock
  • Dance rock

Comment: undoubtedly this 9-track issue is a nice listening session because of providing catchy hooks in guitar playing, dashing paces and joyous melodies on the top. Actually it is the first aspect regarding the Italian quartet`s music which seems to be influenced by the so-called easycore (pop punk) groups. The other aspect is remarkably gloomier and spectacularly nervous, however, reminiscent of Sonic Youth`s anguished guitar chords and Thurston Moore`s singing manner loaded with pre-millennium tension. In conclusion, despite the polarity of the aforementioned phenomena in a theoretical plan Bongley Dead is able to melt them seamlessly into each other. Last but not least- the favourite notch of mine is Razor which shows up a suggestive, dance-appealed gear in the middle of bruising guitars.

Panda Eyes – Dream Police (2014)

  • Indie pop
  • Alternative rock
  • Experimental indie
  • Psychedelic pop
  • Power pop
  • Post-rock
  • Jazz rock
  • Soft rock
  • Art rock
Comment: Panda Eyes do present 8 tracks extending to its endpoint at 25.15. The first impression of mine was it is just a soothing and balmy issue involving drowsy vocal lines backed up by somnolent electric, organ and guitar keys. Indeed, the more the whole approaches its ending the more I approve my opinion. However, there are some exceptions (Sinister Dexter; I Wish) offering up some convincing examples toward electronic experimentation thereby reminding somewhat of the doings of Stereolab, American Analogue Set, Mice Parade, and Sea And The Cake, for instance (maybe it can be considered as a safer version of Sea And The Cake). Or Cry Like You Were Like A Man which used to contain artsy grunge and power pop progressions. In short, the Recife, Brazil-based quintet`s album provides a pleasurably tickling and dignifying listening for sure.
