Comment: it is a real pleasure to be back by one of the reincarnations of Chenard Walcker who is here to exploit the voice of Helen Merrill and her album A Shade Of Difference (1968) and mingle it with rough yet funky electronic beats, propulsive brass sections, and Motown-led male voices. In truth, a theme called My Funny Valentine has been one of the most well-known themes worldwide for years being created by Richard Rodgers, and Lorenz Hart in 1937. Yeah, I am sure you will get your rocks off on that handful of tracks. Of course, similarly to a very huge part of his other issues the release is a part of his own imprint Free Sample Zone (some albums or tracks are related to such imprints as WM Recordings, Comfort Stand Recordings, and Laboratoire Moderne). In a word, look for a Valentine. For example, yesterday I looked at My Bloody Valentine.

Comment: I am back again by digging up in the discography of the Japanese imprint Bunkai-Kei. Some days ago I had listened to an album of being an amalgamation of J-pop, and Western disparate influences resulting in a truly aesthetic entertainment, however, this case of handful of tracks seems to be analogous though revealing its virtue on a bit other premises. It may be a bit less moody and more complicated through its strongly accentuated slamming rhythmic patterns, uncanny samples, glitched-out debris. It is a sort of dance music though standing discreetly apart from well-known styles like house, techno, electro, dubstep. I especially like those string-based samples as if suggestive snatches taken from a cello and woodwind instruments and thereafter magnified and modulated. And of course, it reminds of unforgettable Arthur Russell. All in all, it is a superb selection again. It injects much serotonin into the listener's brain. That's all what we need to get. And the cover print is suggestive for sure.

NAMM – L'Arte dei Rumori (2018)

  • Electronic music

  • Ambient pop
  • Post-classical
  • Modern classical
  • Synth-pop
  • Electro pop
  • IDM
  • Kosmische Musik
  • Drone pop

Comment: just before listening to this set of 10 tracks I had listened to GYBE!'s Luciferian Towers (2017, Constellation) which paradoxically introduced L'Arte dei Rumori because the album also involves some orchestrated semi-symphonic post-rock/chamber rock/post-classical opuses yet it is just an angle within the whole (especially a track called La mar). Conversely, predominantly it is driven by adeptly carved synth threads, acidic drones and exuberant rhythmic progressions indicative of lo-fi aesthetics due to those shaggy beats a bit. I guess such a sort of alloy will have been producing for centuries (because it does have a potential on its own) but it is right now and here to be enjoyed. It is a vibrant crossroad for synth-pop, indie electronic and IDM. Saltamontes provides a renewed insight into Kosmische Musik/Krautrock. The issue is a bit in the discography of Ephedrina Records. Very good.

  • Hip-hop

  • Shibuya-Kei
  • Ambient pop
  • Rap

Comment: it is not surprising to have a talk about the Japanese webscene as one of the mightiest if not the most mighty worldwide. Even there was once up an article by Pitchfork by describing those massively populated parties in Nippon. One of the groundsills is an imprint called Bunkai-Kei wherefrom you can discover a loads of great electronic music and Japanese heritage mixed albums. Yeah, Kanabun`s 4-track Open The World EP is one of them. Of course, one could not underestimate the influence of a style called Shibuya-Kei which strongly flourished in the 90s by its cut and paste method and on the other side by adding cutting-edge easy listening, jazz, and bossa nova and exotica pop styles from the Western cultural sphere to create something truly cinematic and floating. For instance, Link is obviously the most cinematic notch within these 23 minutes, Decillion is a joyous Japanese rap backed up by a sultry beat and enchanting carillon. From experimental, glitched-out noises, vowel effects and sound manipulations to full-fledged artsy pop examples and semi-ochestrated moody hedonism in the self-titled track. In a word, the result is superb, enter the party!

getdizzzy – Long Normal Dream (2017)

  • Improvised music
  • Avant-garde
  • Electronic music
  • Experimentalism
  • Crossover
  • Downbeat

Comment: undoubtedly it is very problematic to categorize this issue. Furthermore, after the first round of listening I did have problems to identify it somehow because of having so many stylistic references within it, and because of changing permanently throughout the course. I guess the most proper tags to pigeonhole it might be such generic tags as electronic music, and experimental music, improvised music. By listening to such a track as Unfortunate the case will be even more complicated because the beat represented over there can ideologically be considered a thread from hip-hop music but in reality it is more a downbeat case. Walkwalk is an example of psyched-out electro-free jazz. It is not surprising at all with regard to the fact he comes out of Chicago, Illinois, USA which has been a fertile platform for amalgamation and flourishing of different styles, from improvised music, post-rock, to free jazz. The issue is a bit in the discography of Etched Traumas.

Comment: this is a joint miscellany of 12 tracks by Ephedrina Records, an imprint from Italy, and Anti-Demos-Cracia, an imprint from Portugal. There are represented such artists as Mutaform, CRPTC, Fingerflood, Hypercube, Electric Dreamers, Hist, Overdrive, We Hate All These Liberals, Guta Project, Hesskhè Yadalanah, Errors Alternados, and Orquestra Popular De Paio Pires. I guess most of these names may be unknown to you, however, being an ardent follower of the imprints then you should have made acquaintance with the artists. Let`s have some thread about the compilation which will be clocked in at a 54 minute (indeed, it is an accepted longitude for a compilation). Undoubtedly it is a variegated issue with flourishing accents and exuberant shades. At times it is rhythmically obsessive just consisting of different rhythmic combinations to following one another or establishing new mutations within the rhythmic matrix. Some tracks are broadened with progressions toward atmospheric spheres and extracting an enchanting quintessence from synthesiser. All in all, I could not mention any weak track within the whole so I have to admit it to be a classy, mandatory compilation. Get it, support it.

  • Non-music
  • Jazz punk
  • Cold wave

  • Leftfield

Comment: this set of 22 tracks consists of a couple of joint albums, more profoundly, Côte, and Ntoa. The combo comes out of Mexico and provides something truly refreshing and mind-altering within the rock (and roll) genre. First of all, it is incisive and harsh by its formal shape and certainly dadaist and postmodernist by its conceptual approach. Of course, the discoloured terms “postmodern” and adjective “postmodernist” do say a bit little about certain phenomena but it can be mapped as a bastard of different genres and exploitation of different genres. It may be tagged as an example of exploitation punk by ranging from art punk/post-punk/electro-punk to hardcore, psych-punk, cold wave/gothic punk and crust punk with hints at spoken word, jazz, electronic music and downright plunderphonics/sampledelic art. But I can guarantee you could find out more cues to even more phenomena and stylistic/stylized pops. Frequently the guitars chime like an angle grinder. One more fact I can admit the artist is obsessed with more or less implicit sexual (under)tones (being inspired by the oeuvre of Marquis de Sade). Undoubtedly one can partake in a frantic pool of very different experiments and combinations. As it is explicated at the site of Plataforma Records their modus operandi is the constant violation of the rules of harmony which dictates the Orthodox Music. At times, at Barbichuettes Night (A Tribute) one can enjoy a submerged, schizoid dialogue being savoured by spacey synthesised atmospheric lines and scruffy analogue synthesiser effects. It comes from nowhere, in the sense that I have no idea of how to localise it. As if being everywhere, it does mean having no place at all. However, at the same time it does not chime in a cheapo and vacuous way altogether. By possible kindred souls it could be compared with the St Petersburg, Russia-based dadaist surf/punk/lounge/avant/sample/psych/fetish-pop combos Messer Chups/Messer für Frau Müller. But I am very sure they have listened to This Heat, Bauhaus, Throbbing Gristle, an early Cabaret Voltaire, Velvet Underground, The Fall, and many artist from within the No Wave pigeonhole either. The overpowering issue is a part of the discography of a French imprint, NKS International Muzakillabel, a part of the discogrpahy of Brazil-based imprint Plataforma, and a part of the discography of the Chilean Cieliro Diystro.

System Morgue – Gegenstrom (2013)

  • Drone
  • Post-industrial
  • Abstract
  • Ambient drone
  • Dark ambient
  • Avant-garde
  • Microtonal
  • Experimentalism
  • Sound art
  • Drone doom

Comment: elementally I have reviewed Russian-based artist System Morgue`s brand new albums like Froid (2017, Frozen Light) and Distress (2018, DNA Production) but Gegenstrom is a thread from earlier years and aesthetically there are up some distinct features regarding comparison. The recent issues are more polished and structured (yet not suppressing its enchanting magic) and by its structure come into the experimental/avant/post-rock genre, however, Gegenstrom is conversely more hazy and foggy and subsequently oneiric. At its nucleus all of that is being headed by a ghost-alike drone which is galvanized and impelling by its physical and emotional appearance. It is like the maelstrom or black hole governing all the matter coming into their realms. For sure, it is not a sort of rock music with regard to the artist`s latter albums, it is more like a decent manifestation within the dark ambient, drone and partly sound art genre. Yet the self-titled track is the exception because it is the sort of drone doom rock by flourishing through oscillating pulses and lofty apexes. At first glimpse, it may seem the listener is trudging across a barren landscape where all is thoroughly destroyed and eradicated yet the more you listen to it the more you will see interesting echoes, glimpses, flickers, vibrations, even colours to come out of these five compositions. I cannot be wrong by bounding it geographically to northern, even subarctic hemisphere being generally dominated by northerly airflows and lengthy darkness. In a word, it is an outstanding work on a Russian imprint, DNA Production.

Comment: I have been watching like many of you the World Championship of Football In Russia. While being a big sport fan since my very childhood I shall have to admit my relation and attitude toward the sport has been changed over the years. Let`s take a good extraction about it in comparison to the art (music, literature, visual art, motion picture). My relation to the art is based on partaking in art by enjoying it, by actualising it, by creating a value/virtue. Indeed, the art refracts your life because it is frequently bigger than the life and always it is more ennobling and powerful. My relation to the sport is simply affective, it is not based on creating a real value and virtue. It is just an obsession or a psychosomatic trace in my brain. Furthermore, given that by following medical terms I would like to add that football seems to be a highly autistic act. An event of the sport used to have a bare, confined value at a time while you are watching it. It does have no value later. I guess there is no value altogether on its own if someone would be watching the competition between Columbia-England, on July 03, 2018 some years later, for instance. It will change into a mere historical fact but it is not an event anymore. Because of that all kinds of the art used to be more superior on their own. There are many other aspects else to be added to this list (for instance, regarding monetary, financial aspects the gap between them could be even more catastrophic). I am here to always listen to the albums of the The Smiths, Cagey House, My Bloody Valentine, The Fucked Up Beat, Tim Hecker, The Fall, Miles Davis, Stereolab, Cocteau Twins, CAN, Faust, GYBE!, Kraftwerk or read the poems by Edgar Allan Poe, William Somerset Maugham, or H. P. Lovecraft or whoever else (but I do not really care of sport events being happened 5, 10, 20 years ago). It certainly broadens your mental and psychic world instead of playing on your mean instincts. Given that the music is a part of the art, it may be the most layered art with regard to discrete experience by a person because one could always discover new aspects distinctly and in accordance with the previous immense vestige. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US-based Radio for the Daydreamers is over there to cope with this immense vestige. Denoument as a word and as the title of the album refers to a problematic process. The result would come out as a coherent and convincing one, though, yet you could pin down the problematic aspect within it. It is a premise of how to integrate indie and jazz into a vivid, self-perpetuating whole while doing away with any exaggerations and overstatements. The issue is a part of the discography of Black Square. In a word, the value of this issue is certainly more worth than the victory of the Stanley Cup in the combo`s home city. Ars longa, ludus brevis.

Comment: this set of 7 tracks (clocking in at a 33-minute) composed by a Russian artist, Alexei Kalinkin is a fine blend of crystalline rhythms, warped synth manipulations somewhere in the middle and spacey synthesised orchestrations atop. More profoundly, those rhythms are fragile running in the vein of post-IDM, and digitalized funk progressions. Undoubtedly the album has no remote distance with specific spokes from indie electronic, hazy electronic jazz/nu jazz/acid jazz and ambient pop either. Even if you do not have a direct reference to it you could perceive it indirectly being laid behind the aforementioned styles. Indeed, many kinds of rhythmic variations are mobilized and activated over there resulting in a sublime flow. There are up a couple of remixes either – one of them is a remix on Atomar Sense (Leisure-B`s remix) by adding a hip-hop component to the blend, the second one is Julian Winter`s remix on Clever. The solid issue is a part in the roster of Humanworkshop.

The Line Of Apollo – The Line Of Apollo EP (2017)

  • Punk rock
  • Emo
  • Alternative rock
  • Power pop

Comment: The Line Of Apollo is a combo from Russia whose handful of tracks is all but post-rock as mistakenly described at their Bonimedia Site. Come on, dear people, it is not an example of post-rock by seeing it at any angle being available. It does have nothing in common either with such bands as Mono or Stereolab which in turn are very diverse by its nature in comparison with one another. However, the particular one is a solid example of post-hardcore and emo rock and especially power pop which by lyrics is induced by unhappy love and harking back to memories (which is a kind of obsession on its own). Given that the songs are sung by male voice (in Russian) I have to admit most men used to idealize their (previous) relationships though there is actually no reason to do it.

  • Dub techno
  • Electronic music
  • IDM
  • Crossover
  • Remix
  • Breaks
  • Ambient trance
  • Psybient
  • Dubtronica

Comment: it is an overhaul of dub music and its possibilities to establish new (crossover) forms with electro, electronic music in general, world music and psychedelic segmentations. At times it is more deconstructed into disparate pieces thereof resulting in deranged yet tickling developments. For instance, electronic effects are juxtaposed to soothing ambient layers and caressing bouncy rhythms. Behind the project is an Italian producer, Gaetano Fontanazza whose 6-notch issue is a joint release between such imprints as Noisybeat, Ephedrina, and Sucu Music.

The Walcker Crew – Emergency Exits (2006)

  • Sampledelic
  • Alternative dance
  • Electronic pop
  • Funk
  • Breaks
  • Plunderphonics
  • Dada music

Comment: yeah, this album is strongly recommended to play by emergency cases like airplane crash, hijacking etc. Hopefully the download rate at Archive.org does not correlate with actual incidents though. On the other side, it is fun to imagine while being hijacked by someone you would tell him/her please let me listen to this set. Of course, it could probably water down the perpetrators or...make them even more angry. Similarly to Chenard Walcker's solo efforts it is a dynamic, dance-induced mix of funk, psychedelia, dada music, world fusion. Having no idea is it either an extended team or just another individual embodiment by Chenard Walcker, but it is of a secondary importance though. However, I could identify Chenard Walcker with the protagonist in HP Lovecraft's classy tale The Music of Erich Zann because the French samplecore juggernaut communicates other artists' oeuvre and souls into a thick, hellish groove. Furthermore, it is even more relevant with regard to the intention of this album. All in all, his music used to fascinate and it is the most important thing indeed.

  • Post-pop
  • Synth-pop
  • Indietronica

Comment: that outing makes you fall in love. By its spaced-out timbres and captivating melodies and blissful harmonies which used to endlessly whirl around your intimate zone and you have no power and wish to resist against it. Undoubtedly it is an ideal example of the so-called ideal pop. All the beautiful things seem to come from inside this 5-track whole – endless dreams, bittersweet, tickling perceptions, whatever more else you could find fro behind these thick orchestrated synths, pulsating rhythms and diffuse vocal delivery. Chillwave as a genre was being fabulous having been existed from the end of the 00s to the first years in the 10s. It was like a derivative of dream pop by finding a new direction toward synth-pop. It is a top tier within the genre though like a swan song of the deceased style. Mandatory stuff by any means.

Comment: behind the project is Pascaline Raphaëlle whose 5-track issue is quite disparate in its stylistic variety and length. It starts off with a silent electro-acoustic composition based on repeated sounds, guitar-based chords and effects, microscopic noises and hisses, and Pascaline`s chants atop. It can be considered an example of slowed-down, deconstructive post-punk. On the other side, it resembles those free folk/weird folk/freak folk numbers in a decade back where some artists from a new generation of folk musicians watched toward the forest and nature and therefore organic sounds. Indeed, one is listening to music which chimes as if recorded with the microphone from a distance (especially at Waterlidl). Nowhere is a very short, 1-minute yet the only rhythmic improvisation. The narrative will be changing in the last two compositions while introducing ambient and droning sounds into the mix. More profoundly, you can find out similarities with artists by Not Not Fun, Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, and her French compatriot Eléonore Hauguel a.k.a. Ellah a. Thaun. In a word, the strong issue.

The Cherry Blues Project – Psychiatric Years EP. 1 (2009)

  • Lo-fi
  • DIY
  • Indie folk
  • Outsider music
  • Folk indie

Comment: unfortunately I can't speak Spanish and because of that I can`t understand the message of these seven songs. Regarding the duo my previous and in truth first experience was related to Selectas Memorias del Invierno (2017, Petroglyph Music) which was absolutely different issue due to microtonal progressions, austere drones, and twisted ambient soundscapes (i.e illbient) music. Why should I speak Spanish because I presume one of the two Argentinian musicians (or both of them) does speak about his admittance in a psychiatric ward. At least I hope the sort of premise because musically it is backed up by sparse acoustic guitar chords which just create a monotonous background. The favourite of mine has been The Smiths for 20 years thanks to the balance between the quartet`s lyrics and music though the subject in Moz`s songs used to be a candidate in the aforementioned ward. It has a strong assuasive impact upon you. On the other side, you know, the medicine used to work a little bit/it is not curative with regard to psychological diseases either. It might be the current one does work (with message) as well. The issue is a part of the discography of a legendary Berlin, Germany-based imprint, Resting Bell Netlabel. Resting Bell makes sense. Of course, I suggest you listen to the second part of Psychiatric Years as well. The music will save the world if something would do it. But it does not save eventually.

Koti & Thee Immigrants – The Relaxing Sounds From Tinsley Prison (2012/2017)

  • World music
  • Acid pop
  • Mood music
  • Psychedelic
  • Alternative pop
  • Psychobilly
  • World fusion
  • Art pop

Comment: we are listening to an album from Brazil under the fantastic California, US-based imprint Death Roots Syndicate. Koti & Thee Immigrants´ 10 track issue was initially released under Fon-Fon Records approximately five and a half years ago so it is quite surprising yet welcome to hear it under an imprint which has used to release issues being dark and gothic (yet playful and artsy). The Relaxing Sounds From Tinsley Prison is predominantly a psychedelic case with fluid dusty organ lines and suggestive singing. There is up a song called Gipsy Man with hints at the life of Romani people so could I presume these 33 minutes are about the life of the ethnicity with some dodges into other culture`s layers either? All this Balkan and Gypsy music influenced music has been a mainstream for more than 10 years largely thanks to motion pictures by Emil Kusturica. By listening to the final instrumental track Tinsley House Tea Time you can admit the collective`s tongue-in-cheek attitude with regard to Music Hall-alike buffoonish loosely sequenced rhythms and the acidic organ and Tiki Music drenched improvistation which funny facet can be generalized over the course.  The more I listen to it the more I hear similarities with Juan Naveira aka Mr Juan aka Juanitos aka Limbo Deluxe aka Miss Emma. That's hugely important especially for a starting weekend. In a word, this album is strongly recommended for all those music lovers who enjoy an artsy challenge and a moody aspect within one bound.

Valzi – I Nvr 3 U (2009)

  • Chiptune
  • Electronic music
  • Indietronica
  • 8-bit
  • Glitch pop
  • Alternative
  • Bitpop
  • Chipbreak
  • Crossover
  • Avant-pop
  • Electro pop
  • Robot pop
  • Electro pop
  • Nintendocore
  • Tracker music

Comment: I assume glitch pop as a genre comes partly out of the tracker/chiptune/bitpop scene. I have always loved chiptune music even though I did not it consciously or being aware of the genre which started sometime in the 80s. Because the first playing consoles of mine were yellow cartridge-based, mostly Chinese productions. Milk & Nuts, Mutant Ninja Turtles, Lode Runner, Getaway, Konami NHL 1988, Tank, The Wild Gunman etc were the games I had spent very many hours within. I can vividly remember for a game called Bomberman which sounded as if an outtake from one of the songs by Throbbing Gristle. The rhythmic 8-bit lines within it would break to many sonic shards yet it would incessantly be trudging over the game scene. For sure, the genre was not the very first electronic music created ever (as we know very well thanks to the Sub Rosa`s compilations of noise and electronic music the first electronic and noise compositions were already peoduced in the second part of the 19th century). It was not the very first computer music ever created as well. However, I like the consistency and strength of people who follow the genre by promoting and creating by themselves. Valzi`s 11-track issue being released on Petite & Jolie is a great issue crossing at an interface of chiptune and indie electronic music. Its poppy yet elegantly exaggerated tendencies to come to the surface permanently used to provide it even a more cutting-edge shape. That's cool. It is a sort of electro pop but it chimes as if coming from a broken, abandoned computer world. Unfortunately it somehow resonates with sad news from the recent world where even celebrities do commit suicide. The soul of a broken human being can be compared with the one of a broken computer. The biggest problem in the nowadays world is that a human being is exercised to be machines but the soul within the creature is still not be ready to step to the next, robot level. The only way is to set robots free but the biggest consequence of it may be the man-machines will eradicate the human being as a species. Given that it is an example of chiptune music you should not take the adjective “exaggerated” seriously because within the genre there cannot be any of the elements exaggerated in the strict sense of the word. All is finely integrated and exposed to the ears of a hungry music fan. And the cover print is really cool by creating a psychedelic pathway to arrive at your positive self. Take it, remember it.

Igniael – Blossom (Core Edition) (2017)

  • Electronic music
  • Ambient pop
  • Crossover
  • Field recording
  • New Age
  • Organic electronica
  • Musique concrète
  • Art pop

Comment: Iñaki Barrocal aka Igniael is a musician from Andorra, a very small country (467,6 km²) nearby Spain where the Catalan language is the official language. With regard to the artist`s name I can assume he may be a Basque by his own nationality. However, all the songs represented over there are predominantly sung in English. Yeah, the course of 10 tracks is atmospheric, mostly light-hearted and spiritual (predominantly induced by choral singing and emotive chants) though at times one can hear more murky tones and glimpses in his soundscape as if entering into some of the catacombs in Southern Europe by feeling the ephemeral span of a human being. The Grim Reaper and his scythe are doing their work properly but it should not be surprising at all because the balance between life and death must exist. On the other side, given that those sounds of water flowing and chirping the birds and the particular singing one can imagine by attending a place nearby a (bit heretic) monastery being deviated by the strict Catholic canon. Barrocal`s mystical approach reminds me a bit of the Italian legend Alio Die`s spiritual ambient landscapes. Such sort of music I guess could be a poppy example within the circuit of dark folk/neoclassical/dark wave followers. The enchanting issue is a part of the discography of Khannonmusic Studios.
