Bryyn – In Hiding (2017)

  • Indie folk
  • Alt-folk
  • Folk indie
  • Americana
  • Singer-songwriter

Comment: in recent days Chicago, Illinois, US-based artist Bryn Martin aka Bryyn (also being known as the frontman of Pinkle and the Polygons) issued a couple of albums. In Hiding is a crystal clear folk album which gets inspiration from the best sources of an American music history and tradition. It is not the first album by him. Vice versa, he has been a highly prolific artist during the last decade for cheering us with more and less whimsical electronic tinged folk releases. As I said already it is a crystal clear issue yet it does not mean he does not employ electronic devices and effects for his own sake. All these instruments are up there to have been measured out just as optimally and poignantly as it is needed to conquer one's senses and heart. The listener can breathe in and out in a free manner because all the music seems to come directly from an effortless cloud, from liberated uncivilised terrains, from somewhere we used to subconsciously longing for. It is idyllic, it is rustic, it is picturesque. There can be drawn parallels upon such an artist as Sufjan Stevens yet it is not a serious objection to assume it as being one of the best issues in 2017. The outing is a bit of the immense platform of Jamendo.

K4mmerer – Pixeled (2016)

  • EDM
  • Electro pop
  • Electronic pop
  • Ambient pop
  • Dance pop
  • Post-disco
  • Hi-NRG

Comment: K4mmerer has been an unbelievably prolific artist since 2008 having released 36 issues on Jamendo. Pixeled is one of them amongst the whole drifting subtly between gentle ambient pop and more crispy electro pop and straightforward electronic dance music rhythms imbued with highly galvanized frequencies. Fortunately the listener can enjoy a more broad picture in comparison to the one described above so the result is multicoloured and effective ultimately. It makes highly sense. Mostly it is instrumental, at times the artist exploits found sounds (indeed, birds are chirping). It is a balanced drift between your dream centred sensations and body related impulses. I truly feel myself fascinated by those sublime jazzy progressions and irresistibly dreamy synthesised chords being followed by the aggressive beats at Faulty. In a word, it is a post disco album in the pre apocalyptic world. Given that it is an instance of prefix pop in a fascinating manner.

  • Ambient noise
  • Space rock
  • Avant-rock
  • Experimental rock
  • Post-psychedelic electronica

Comment: this 12-track issue can be considered an example of improvised music but for sure it is way too wide umbrella to get into a more detailed contact with it. You can hear undetermined sounds from different angles full of effects and various timbres and differing intensities. From rough metallic clanging and burbling electronic noises and gloomy smouldering beneath the upper music layers to extended guitar riffs and explorations of the instrument`s inner life and refined electronic glass bead games to more light-hearted and exalting psychedelic ambient progressions which may sound downright poppy with regard to the first mentioned aspects. The issue will be finished in a very fine epic key with Blanche. In a word, it chimes like a witty barbaric sonic attack in the midst of polished pop music instances yet being enormously more intriguing and interesting. The enchanting issue is a part of the discography of such an infernal platform as Les Diks Qui Sautent. We don't forget it's hellish discography, we will back to it soon.

nula.cc – East By Rail (2017)

  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Drone
  • Ambient
  • Field recording
  • Musique concrète
  • Experimental electronica
  • Epic
  • Avant-electronica
  • Post-industrial
  • Leftfield
  • Sound art
  • Minimalism

Comment: this 3-notch outing is a fine example of how field recording sounds are treated in a way to chime like coming from an eerie street. It gravitates toward a rail station which does mean one can hear metallic ghosts and at the same time epic industrial echoes which will result in the statement this music is uncannily beautiful and ennobling. And purgative by any means. It can be considered life around us we used to encounter every day, however, being strongly magnified and thereafter amplified. Most of us can recognise the charm of Minecraft, this 50 minutes and a bit more can be considered a counterpart of it in sounds in some sense. In some sense with certain reservations because East By Rail is less artificial because this sound art issue comes directly from an interface where life and observation and production are mixed up with one another. You can perceive rough sonic figures being juxtaposed to more fine sonic dimensions. Indeed, similarly to Minecraft it is highly playful which used to resonate with the surrounding sounds. While listening to it you should be aware of the fact which sound comes from the album and which one comes through a window or wall of your apartment. One of the most outstanding releases in 2017 coming from Prague, the Czech Republic.

Pasqualino Ubaldini – Mosaique (2017)

  • World music
  • Easy listening
  • Mood music
  • Latin music
  • Art music

Comment: Pasqualino Ubaldini is an artist and guitarist from Italy who has been releasing his music through Jamendo within the last decade (the guitar is not the only instrument he has been playing. One can hear bagpipes, woodwind instruments etc). Mosaique is a great issue due to both technical and moody aspects which in fact are tightly related to one another. One can encounter arpeggios which make your soul either to soar or feel bittersweet melancholy. However, the latter makes your soul to be filled with lofty feels as well. Ubaldini's script reminds a bit of the one of Simon Jeffres, the leader of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra regardless is it related to world music vibes or not. Indeed, it is highly playful and relaxing. Despite its carnival-alike touch you can feel the sophisticated arrangements behind it. These 37 minutes are truly great delight to enjoy it once, twice and now and then. You hear it as if watching it through an omnipotent kaleidoscope. So yeah, I have experienced synaesthetic impulses while listening to this set of 9 tracks. It will be a notch in the list of the best albums of 2017 at Recent Music Heroes.

Bongley Dead – Undici (2017)

  • Indie rock
  • Alternative rock
  • Glam rock

Comment: Bongley Dead, an Italian combo is back with their brand new one which can be considered a pure revelry and joy. In comparison to their previous outing 4 (2015) it abandoned post-grunge-y smooth mannerisms and reveals its dedication into galvanised, cellophane tinged guitars. Yet through this powerful guitar fuzz one can hear an enchanting glam rock thread which is the lead motif for this 17-notch issue. So let's switch on the electricity and the show is going on. By indirect influences one can hear such combos as Placebo, and Smashing Pumpkins. As I already said indirectly. Solid release indeed.

Erebus Redemption – A Pawn of Darkness (2012)

  • Death metal
  • Brutal metal
  • Extreme metal
  • Electronic
  • Lo-fi
  • Cybermetal

Comment: this set of 12 tracks is as abrasive as an exceptional outing in the roster of Sirona-records used to be. It is overwhelming and suffocating in its excessively powerful leaps and mad steps. Mostly it is death metal with some exceptions into muddy, lo-fi electronic music. The ambience around the listener gets razed and destroyed so think twice if you would like to get into a dirty manifesto of power. It may push on your sinful mind and trigger some unintended emotions. And the cover print is great.

Ale – Seri-Al Rappers (2017)

  • Hip-hop
  • Rap
  • Urban music
  • Electronic music
  • Electro-hop
  • Grime

Comment: these 219 seconds do slam and jump up within playful electro-hop/grime beats by moving from right to left from atop downwards. It is the vivid backdrop to Italian lyrics being recited also in a playful manner. Although I have no idea what it is all about. The track is a part of the Italian imprint Yo! Netlabel. Highly appreciated.

VA – The Moon (2017)

  • Shoegaze
  • Ethereal wave
  • Dream pop
  • Alternative pop/rock
  • Indie pop/rock
  • Post-punk

Comment: I have always thought that a serious compilation should start with the teaser to give it a dynamic boost. Indeed, here it is Eternal Something's September chiming like Cocteaus on synths. As a record label entitles itself The Blog That Celebrates Itself you can be sure it comes out mainly with shoegaze inspired tracks full of purple tinged dreams, hazy beauty, colourful fantasies and psychedelic fringes. But not only this – you can hear also proto-shoegaze sounds the likes of harking back to Cocteau Twins, and Durutti Column. Indeed, all the modern ways bring back to the post-punk sound. By the way, there is represented one track coming very directly from the goth/post-punk breed and there are up a few exceptions additionally. One of those is a favourite of mine the track called Ethereal Love by Dead Serpent at utmost dreams. I would call it infinite darkgaze/ethereal wave. Additionally to the aforementioned artists there are represented such artists as Tropique Noir, Hazed, Bugjar, Pure Confusion, Street Bird, The Wagner Logic, Ikiryo, Strange Things, The Last Passenger, Elegant Dead Star, and European Ghost.

  • Rhythmic noise
  • Power electronics
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Leftfield
  • Electronic music
  • Drone
  • Noise

Comment: this handful of tracks is intermittently advanced and retreated by the attacks of rhythmic noise, and bouts of more restraint appearances. Dynamically it creates the sense of moving further, from one detail to a different one. In the music history, it is a classic narrative to showcase the clash between noise, and silence. Within the whole the listener may perceive music as multiply shattered and crushed but the aforementioned wrestling gives it coherence and constructive tension. Pulsating signals being accompanied by convulsive glitches and cut-ups are the counterparts of one's heartbeats though as such kind of ones impending of an attack of cardiac arrest. Thereafter when all of that aggressive by its nature is succumbed the angels of the rusting are up there to fade away across a silent pathway to the corroded garden of an Eden. The outing is a bit in the discographies of tecnoNucleo, and Ayan Records.

Blasphemation – An Oath of Total Allegiance to the Black God (2017)

  • Black metal
  • Extreme metal
  • Brutal metal
  • Black noise
  • Radiophonic art
  • Sludge metal
  • Goregrind
  • Crossover

Comment: today is the first advent of the year of 2017 so because of that this set of 4 tracks can be considered an act of blasphemy. Although my deed is not an act of blasphemy because I do not consider Jesus as a deity. But I like Jesus as a righteous and rebellious person who attacked some obsolete principles for the sake of more people. Jesus can be considered an outstanding person among the likes of Plato, and Aristotle who are being the highest masterminds in the history of mankind. God by itself should not be described as white or black because given that adjectives cannot be accredited to God in a strict sense because it comes out from the realm of mankind to evaluate something. In an indirect sense, God can be considered as white and good because of creative processes. Musically it is an intriguing stuff due to starting off with a brutal and growling attack within the pigeonhole of mixed black metal/goregrind and after that stark rage it is going to happen. Sorcerer's Sight is a disrupted black noise example with lines and slots coming out from a parallel universe. It is mad and it is desperate where the notes are not resolved and it is like a painful drift through the layer of tortured souls. Stomped Into a Sludge is a hard rock with multiple layers as if all of them being played at the same time. Today the phenomenon is called sludge metal. The apotheosis of the release comes eventually in the final part, at the self-titled composition being a mixture of black noise, radiophonic art and something unidentified additionally. Sounds from a short wave radio are tightly mixed up with snippets and loops from speeches. So it can be said eventually it is a bipolar outing not only with regard to the opposition between brutal metal and black noise but inside the genres as well. Impressive outing from the slot of Torn Flesh Records.

Monoritmo & Rebelo – Farowest EP (2017)

  • Techno
  • Remix
  • Electronic music
  • Dub techno
  • Deep techno
  • Club dance
  • Electro house

Comment: this is my first turn into the discography of Illogical Kit. Far.From.Home starts off with bubblegum-tinged, funky techno and Italo disco in which progressions the listener can perceive some strong if not to say tectonic undercurrents, and fine dub-inflected appearances. So.Simple is a turn toward more deep oscillations where expansive outer space as a premise meets profound inner space impulses to cross the artificial border between them. Furthermore, you can perceive a slight shift within it the artists' music is going to add more house-drenched elements into the blend. Basstic is still a techno example yet wrapped in thick starry dust and nebulous developments. Spicy.Berlin is a deep techno and electro house mixed mongrel which invites you to come to the dance floor. As the release did embark on the funky vibes it would be finished in a similar manner. In a word, it is a solid split and joint work by Monoritmo, and Rebelo.

Yoshida Com – Onna No Kanojo (2014)

  • Electronic music
  • Synth-pop
  • Shibuya-kei
  • Lo-fi
  • DIY
  • Electro pop
  • Alternative dance
  • Acid pop

Comment: this handful of tracks had been created approximately 3 decades ago in Japan on low price yet effectively propelling synthesisers and a drum machine called Alesis HR16. Light-hearted melodies, slightly extended and mutant chord ends, and naive yet catchy cadences with a slight tin-tinged flavour and occasional acidic attacks are composed in a way which can very certainly be considered as Japanese. At times it chimes like an example of pre-electroclash via rough simplification of post-punk music (especially at Scene 7). Thanks to Upitup for finding and exposing the Japanese DIY maverick to a wider audience.

Edith Alonso – Límite (2017)

  • Improvised music
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Electronic music
  • Micronoise
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Leftfield
  • Drone
  • Live session

Comment: these 21 minutes provide a saturated glimpse into the health of grayish noise. The listener can hear static loaded drones which in turn are enriched by slamming electronic piercing and electro-acoustic clanging. The vicissitude of the release keeps changing throughout the course thereby keeping up interest and welcome tension. I guess someone of us may imagine the whole to collapse eventually but it will not happen though. It is not a sterile but a fertile universe of blurred sounds being fed up by an electric bass, and a synthesiser played by Edith Alonso in a club in Madrid in February 2017. The outing is a bit in the discography of Pan Y Rosas Discos.

Slow Decay – Ghost E.P. (2017)

  • Post-punk
  • Gothic rock
  • Coldwave
  • Alternative rock
  • Epic
  • New wave

Comment: this set of 3 tracks drags up good old post-punk and gothic rock phenomena such combos as an early Cocteau Twins and The Cure, Comsat Angels, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Chameleons. It is led by the distinctive operatic female voice being accompanied by groovy and spacey synthesizers, semi-atmospheric guitars and intense, compelling drums and bass rumbling. Ultimately these elements will create something more, more than just the sum of the instruments. One can perceive a dark, transcendental flow within the upper layers. That`s all we need at a time. This great outing is a part of the discography of Small Bear Records.

  • J-pop
  • Electro-pop
  • Electronic pop
  • Shibuya-kei
  • Acid pop
  • Synth-pop
  • Autotune

Comment: it is a joyful listening session in the vein of Japanese pop music with clear hints at childish progressions and exaggeratedly ecstatic pop numbers. It seems to sound to me in that way but it is not derogative comment by my side at all. I like sparkling dynamics with these 8 tracks are surrounded from atop to the very bottom. Even if some of these used to meander in a more silent way. Acidic grooves and bubbling synths come to the forefront to support high-pitched vocals. At times those vocals chime as if doll-alike robots were there to fill singing duties. Nostalgically I can remember for all the times while spending my time watching anime movies. It undoubtedly represents an otherworldly world for a Westerner. The amusing issue is a part of the discography of Yuzame-label. And within it there are up such artists as Rekanan, Mysteka, Mecanika, coralmines, Yunomi,ミスミ, 歩く人, and 市瀬るぽ

Comment: I have heard and reviewed many Martin Rach's outings but the Lithuanian musician's brand new one surprises me again. I do not know is it either an anthem to the washing machine or a swan song to it but it is an intriguing outing due to improvised themes and downbeat and free jazz inflicted progressions. Yet it is not an ordinary example of free jazz because one can feel it is slightly deviated from it because of a more loose and scatterbrained approach. More profoundly, it is like a DIY instance of free jazz. It contains 17 notches which used to drift between sober milieus and frantic outbursts, at times more predictable, at times less. At Wash My Soul5 (but not only) you can hear the growling drone being surrounded by natural sounds or it can be understood otherwise recorded unplugged and in a natural ambience. I suppose the sound of drone is created by the mouth of Martinas Rakshtinas himself, however, thereby having no idea how it should be named if the human being tries to mimic the sound of an artifical object. For sure, it is not lycanthropy on its own. The latest fact of natural ambience can be broadened to the rest of the tracks as well. In a word, I like the whole very much.

Comment: from zombie-induced backmasking Maggots In The Tongue to delta blues drenched Encordoamento the Brazilian Lucas Pastina's Insanitarius sets a new pace to bring forth his new and crazy ideas for all of us. Why we actually need them? I do not know but I know we need them in a certain way and for a certain purpose. Given that the path of the artist is disparate it is very mind-provoking to follow it. To see how it goes on, to see how it used to meander and dodge in certain moments, how it used to ascend and fade away. It is an ecstatic way to represent one's compelling grips through the sound. Insanitarius is also about insanity and madness as the aforementioned issues but musically-stylistically it can be considered an example of space rock with some reservations. The reservation does mean it can be considered as an example of guitar ambient either. The reservation does also mean it is a bit improvised, it seems not to be determined. By the way, you can hear the aforementioned zombies within the album as well though they are bit more withdrawn because of being buried in a half filled grave. I am very impressed of how some artists like Lucas Pastina can define aesthetic borders on certain albums and develop within these borders. I am way too volatile and haphazard to fulfill it. It is a kind of art. Intensity used to change throughout the 11-track outing but spaced-out influences used to bounce atop a listener's head. Furthermore, you can hear tectonic snoring within the whole. By any means, it is the feeling! Do you think of it you have sacrificed your valuable time to listen to it? Vice versa, Lucas Pastina has sacrificed his own time to redeem your frivolous nature and appease and replace your fake go(o)ds. For me, it makes very sense in the middle of nothing. Nothing as a state of being. Top quality by any means.

Comment: this outing of 7 tracks is another unvarnished madness within the free jazz and Improvised music genre. More profoundly, you can imagine a swarm of dysfunctional musicians playing their deranged solos and dejected snippets which are then set to be repeated again and again. Ultimately it can be said it is a crafty statement because those energetic vectors are pushed in one direction. Even if you see it of containing thematically more than just one topic (for instance, at times coming close to guitar-led fusion appearances). You can feel overwhelming power pouring out of any slots. Therefore it can be considered as an example of the demonstration of power within metallic objects as if spending your time somewhere in the junkyard. Otherwise I would call it freeformfreakout but it is obviously an acknowledged phenomenon today. But that's no problem. It is a solid work on Mansarda Records.

Comment: my first impression was it is an arty-farty issue while hearing superficial piano chords moving in front of the scale. In fact, those piano chords were not so superficial and many more layers would be get added to the mix. So ultimately it can be admitted it is very far away of being superficial and simplistic. Karolis Burzinskas who is behind the project adds craftily not only emotively accentuated piano chords and orchestrated templates to the mix but also manipulates with synth-based and funky cadences here and there. For instance, at Sunshine Radio it evokes memories about such Soviet synth-led combos as the Latvian Zodiac (it is still a favourite of mine), and the Lituanian Argo. Of course, If you wish you could also draw parallels upon such post-rock luminaries as God Is An Astronaut, and Bark Psychosis but it is indispensable anyway. As well as those thoughtful and picturesque extended piano chords and orchestrations remind of a late Talk Talk at This Girl. However, Karolis Burzinskas` handful of tracks is an ennobling outing where different kind of shifts between the styles and tempos pitch a game. And the cover print is truly heart-breaking. The release is a part of the discography of Portuguese imprint Enoughrecords, and also a part of the discography of Japanese imprint Bump Foot.

Comment: imagine there upward in outer space there is a ceiling filled in with hanged wind bells which used to chirp different tones and timbres and thereafter these sonic bits will spread over the scale. The ceiling is immensely broad and wide and at times one can hear more malignant reverberations bouncing back from the wall. Is it the vestibule of mayhem? In fact, hell as a location does not exist anywhere but on Earth. More profoundly, it exists among the people, it exists between one's ears. More profoundly, there exist more than 7 billion hells on Earth. OK, I should fix the statement the number is a bit exaggerated because the children are the best and intact part of the human race. The recent 9-notch outing is all about collapsing structures of the mind, about traumatic events, horrendous memories, suicidal thoughts as the artist herself has assumed. Like Moz once declaimed give up life as a bad mistake. On the other side, stupidity, selfishness and foolishness of other people may paradoxically inspire you move on and on the other hand I guess without pain and depression such a great release as this one could have never been spawned to provide us bittersweet pleasure in its dystopic desperation. The issue is a bit in the discography of Silent Method Records.
