wk [es] – EXT-ME (2010)

  • Abstract techno
  • Glitchtronica
  • Electronic music
  • Leftfield
  • Experimental techno
  • Minimal techno
  • Avant-techno
  • Experimental electronica

Comment: EXT-ME was the first issue being released in the discography of Hz-Records. It was also a predecessor of an issue called Deus ex machina. In comparison to the last mentioned issue it is more restrained and sparse because of circling around dry glitched-out techno patterns at times being variegated with faint melodic progressions and stoned noise explosions. However, the aforementioned elements are seamlessly integrated into the whole. That's the strength of this 5-notch outing. These errors are very fine ones for your bloody robotic brain. And for my fking brain even more. Debris is to be resurrected like Jesus Christ is to be recycled.

wk[es] - Deus ex machina (2011)

  • Avant-techno
  • Experimental electronica
  • Experimental techno
  • IDM
  • Abstract techno

Comment: if to compare it to a nearby album review Parametic Delay's Love Song Before Sleeping (2011, No-Source) you can draw parallels on glitched-out sounds and IDM-esque cadences yet on the other side it is a disparate case for sure. It is not inflected by indie pop at all these five tracks get their power from outer space to bring it forth through mundane technical support and electronics. That's cool, that's intriguing. Deus ex machina. Although the first two tracks (Dialogue, Phantasm) are quite gentle by its nature the rest of the whole is remarkably more spaced-out and murky in its deliberatedly haphazard playfulness. It reminds me a bit of Autechre, the duo's abstract, mathematical techno. Debris and waste will be employed to the maximal extent. It sounds like a Poltergeist would play somewhere in the middle of a wasteland. This mind-provoking outing is a bit of the discography Hz-Records.

Parametic Delay – Love Song Before Sleeping (2011)

  • Indietronica
  • Post-pop
  • Electronic pop
  • IDM
  • Plinkerpop
  • Glitch pop
  • Bitpop
  • Synth-pop

Comment: I can remember for the first half of the 00s while one of the most interesting sounds was related to the so-called duyster (from Belgium) and such labels as Morr Music, and Monika Enterprise. Such peripheral sounds and bits as glitches, noises, 8 bits and other wonky sounds were scraped to subjugate them to sub pop/gentle indie pop inflected harmonies and melodies. Within the netlabel world there have also been such kind of juggernauts who provided a platform to an immense number of artists. Error Lo-Fi, Aerotone, 12rec. and of course, No-Source imprint (unfortunately all these records are defunct now). All the aforementioned elements are apparently represented on this 5-notch issue coming out from Indonesia (the duo of Benk Robo, and Dittea). It is witty, it is poignant, it is charming, it is cerebral with regard to the choice of sounds and accomplished compositions. At the same time it is intact and not smeared with the burden of everyday life. We cannot be without adjectives while describing an astounding release. This issue makes that sense.

Random Forest – Panoramic (2016)

  • Post-rock
  • Epic
  • Art rock
  • Experimental rock
  • Ambient rock

Comment: post-rock is a style which cannot be understood in one certain way. First, post used to refer to something which comes after rock music yet still having something common with the previous phenomenon. It is the kind of ontological explanation. However, such combos as Stereolab, Broadcast, Slowdive's Pygmalion can be considered post-rock in that transgressive sense. Mostly post-rock is understood as guitar-based music which used to meander on symphonic guitar progressions frequently from the silent starting point to reach loud and majestic crescendos. Like a powerful male to provide multiple orgasms to a female. Indeed, post-rock as a style is a drift between divine and mundane. Furthermore, the categorisations cannot be presumed as clear-cut ones between the ones there supposed to fifty one grey shades of...whatever. Behind the London, UK-based combo Random Forest is the duo of Aaron Gilbert and David Walters (The Echelon Effect). David Walters aka The Echelon Effect has grown an impressive following to his project through the social media and first of all thanks to his wondrous music. In fact, Random Forest as a minor brother of it continues to trudge the same path of atmospheric and dreamy guitars, and electronic beats and suggestive effects. Indeed, these guitars clearly imply their power to dominate and emit beauty simultaneously while the electronics used to support it in an almost invisible way. It can even be compared to The Smiths at The Queen Is Dead (1986) when Johnny Marr added a sampler/synthesiser (denoted as The Hated Salford Ensemble and Orchestrazia Ardwick at Strangeways, Here We Come) to complement guitars with more orchestrated sounds. Or My Bloody Valentine would have been doing since the Glider EP (1990) to give MBV's sound the panoramic touch. In a word, the result is astounding which should be employed as a remedy for patients with low a serotonin level.

Tree No Leaves – Sacred Natives (2017)

  • Indie rock
  • Alternative rock
  • Progressive rock
  • Art rock
  • Experimental rock
  • Psychedelic rock
  • Drone rock
  • Americana
  • Southern rock

Comment: I can remember for my first experience with this combo happened approximately 8 years ago with regard to such a great label as now defunct Modicum Of Silence, the Ohio, US-based imprint led by Nic Ross. For sure, you are having serious problems to find out the discography of the record label but many albums you can download from the rare albums section at RMH. Since then, since the first chords Tree No Leaves' music has been highly artsy due to its quest towards a perfect synthesis in rock music. And I think they have succeeded in doing it. For instance, Sacred Natives, the 4-notch outing is a fascinating match by putting together such styles as vehement indie music and on the other side adding to it more traditional yet still mind-provoking genres like Kosmische Musik, krautrock, psychedelia and progressive rock. Thirdly, you can hear American threads like Southern rock, Americana even if those are not always prevalently apparent. At times those freely floating and slightly acidic Hammond organ based grooves remind of such Manchester baggy juggernauts as The Charlatans, and Inspiral Carpets (especially at Emperor's Cyclical Disco). And The Doors is an obvious influence. As I said already it is the perfect match.

Quimper – Wake Up Gastone (2017)

  • Modern classical
  • Electronic music
  • Post-classical
  • Dark wave
  • Leftfield
  • Indietronica
  • Ambient
  • Art music
  • Experimental pop

Comment: Quimper is a project from the United Kingdom who has released nine outings since 2012. In 2017, Wake Up Gastone is the artist`s third issue. Although it is a short issue many dodges and progressions are up there for the listener's sake. It starts off with the self-titled notch being imbued with lurking and droning synths being elegantly opaque by its nature and then the 4-track outing continues with a J-pop influenced pop number (Elephant). Years Out is the most epic track where electronic devices are jettisoned for lonely piano chords and longing female vowels thereby making the listener's soul to feel herself/himself somehow scarred and sadly reflective. The final track He Woke Up is also grave and somber though it used to base on an electronic progression. It is the most atmospheric, ambient and dark wave tinged example within it. By watching the silly cover at I have to admit it seems to be eventually harmonize with the music behind it. In a word, it does not seem to be so silly at all. All In all, the result is impressive and I have to discover more music from the artist.

Nuclear Biologist Rocket Surgeons – Better Music Through Research (2008)

  • Avant-prog
  • Experimental rock
  • Art rock
  • RIO
  • Dada music
  • Improvised music
  • Zeuhl
  • Progressive rock
  • Leftfield

Comment: this handful of tracks is a frantic result by its compositions, concept and completion. First of all, the most startling effect is that theoretical premises and notes were translated directly into music by employing a special customised programme for it. Musically it chimes like a sequence to a legendary French combo, Magma. An innumerable swarm of turns and dodges throughout the course are clearly remarkable for the listener's pleasure. It can be considered roughly schizoid if it were something but music. And of course, it used to be overwhelmingly playful and amusing giving no fuck to serious cocks. For instance, those overtly bombastic orchestrations and highly pathetic operatic singing cannot be something but done with tongue-in-cheek attitude. Unfortunately the combo dissolved and it is their only issue. You must pay attention to this proggy beast. You have no choice anymore while reading the overview of this divine comedy. But unfortunately being without the cover print (it exists at the site of the release, though).

Radiomaniac – Radiomaniac EP (2017)

  • Shoegaze
  • Space rock
  • Indie rock
  • Alternative rock
  • Ambient rock
  • Experimental rock
  • Avant-rock
  • Ethereal Wave
  • Dream pop
  • Post-punk

Comment: Radiomaniac is a combo from Russia and the quartet`s music is vamped up with traditional rock instruments (bass, guitar, the drums) yet their soundscape is remarkably bigger than the set of initial items. It is an instance of spaced-out rock where fascinating murky echoes and powerful delays used to move across the walls and ceilings to destroy them to break on through to the other side. Hovering elements are adeptly intertwined with more powerful yet still captivatingly dreamy sections (for instance, a highlight is Leaving (Покидаем)]. In fact, the words (in Russian) speak in pessimistic tones (about death – all will be dead stated in one song) and escaping across Outer Space yet on the other side it is definitely about life (life comes to all of you in the same track being aforementioned) and love-affirmative. Yin meets yan being a ground for this idiosyncratic issue. I have to admit it is one of the most mind-blowing issues in 2017. The issue is a part of the discography of Mizou Records.

Fugenn & The White Elephants – Lycoris (2010)

  • Nu jazz
  • Acid jazz
  • Electronic music
  • Glitchtronica
  • Alternative
  • Mood music
  • Experimental pop

Comment: it starts off with a mellow nu jazz/acid jazz progression to progress partly in other direction. More profoundly, you can be witness to glitched-out electronica, droning electricity yet at the same time preserving its sublime, poppy touch. This issue is a fascinating example of how once peripheral (and the very sounds of noise music) sounds are integrated into something which can be considered highly pleasant to one's ear and soul. Yet there is much time to go to get a world where such sort of music could be mainstream music. The 5-track outing is a bit of the discography of Hz-Records. Top tier.

Mirth Mara – Sprit Juis (2017)

  • Electronic music
  • Dubstep
  • Experimental electronica
  • Wonky
  • Alternative

Comment: Sprit Juis is the 3-notch outing by Mirth Mara which is one of the aliases of Martinas Rakshtinas, the Lithuanian electronic music producer who has produced very disparate music so far. The recent one is clearly driven by heavily stepping bass rhythms and a bit skewed rhythmic patterns as if losing its balance and falling either downwards or toward left or right side. On the other side, the listener can feel incisive electro and whirring drone tinged gravity which used to elliptically drive and eventually go upward. For sure, it is pure alchemy in terms of chords and rhythmic kicks full of intensity, arithmetical calculations and reversed passion. In a word, get reversed and passionate. The outing is a part of the music collection of Bandcamp and Free Music Archive (support this excellent site by making a donation. They need it right now).

The Last March of the Ents – Rotting Forevermore (2017)

  • Screamo
  • Brutal metal
  • Hardcore
  • Stoner rock
  • Crossover
  • Doom

Comment: The Last March of the Ents, a trio from Phoenix, Arizona, US provides a couple of tracks which can be considered very suitable for an intense mosh worship. Screamo, stoner, doom, and hardcore will get channelized into a powerful whole. In fact, Hollowed Out has been managed to add more atmospheric guitars to the mix thereby chiming like a stoned blackgaze combo. The issue is a pat of the discography of Torn Flesh Records.

  • Noise
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Microtonal
  • Drone
  • Leftfield
  • Non-music
  • Minimalism
  • Ambient noise

Comment: noise as a genre is considered as the counterpoint to the music. Undoubtedly there has been a set of strategies. One of the purposes of the noiseniks is to undermine the role of pop music through conquering the area by taking it over. Given that there must be attributes belonging also to the (pop) music. For instance, melodies and harmonies. By talking about such artists as Glenn Branca, and My Bloody Valentine you can agree about the fact their inner power and verve was adeptly bound to something larger-than-life. Truly melodic, truly epic something which used to be bigger than life. At some point even better than dreams in fact. Because it used to be witty as well. The same strategy seems to be the base for this 3-notch outing by Roger Haddad whose music is very loud and resonant yet involving majestic climaxes even if it is minimally running through microscopic changes and colours in timbre. Noise can be negative and noise can be positive. The first of them is clearly pointed to destroy the structure of something, the other pigeonhole is to represent something on its own. On the issue there are represented both of the categorisations. Zhele – Starcardigan (2017)

  • Alternative pop
  • Indie pop
  • Synth pop
  • Electronic pop
  • Art pop
  • Electro-indie

Comment: I guess it supposed to be an example of contemporary indie/alternative pop. First time I could not concentrate but I had to focus on weird singing mode. I tried to figure out is it sung in Russian while strongly buffoonish or is it sung in Ukrainian or Belarusian. As much as I understand Russian I did figure out the lyrics is strongly lovelorn and the lyrics is frequently conveyed in a simplistic and naive way. However, musically it is craftily produced while being imbued with peaky synths and suggestive cadences. At times the elements will change their paths steeply by allowing lofty and bombastic dodges into the mix. Although my first impression was the release is the sort of lacklustre and mediocre. Given that I have to admit the release is a grower. But I feel I would like to get more emotions from the music it is somehow calculated and restrained. The grower is a bit in the discography of Mizou. This is a way of how electro pop, indie and synth pop used to mingle into one. Even if I am being an old school indie man preferring listen to Lambchop's Nixxon to fall asleep (sic!) I will appreciate it ultimately.

  • Indietronica
  • Epic
  • Drone pop
  • Organcore
  • Acid rock

Comment: it is a quite peculiar feel to go back in time with purpose to review an issue you have not listened to it before. For instance, this 8-track composition was initially released in 2008 and though you have not experienced it before it somehow brings forth painful memories from the past. In fact, it reminds me of those lucky times you had been experiencing then which are ceased to exist today. In a word, it reminds me of the fragility of life and that all used to change permanently around us. The nature of the album is doleful and longing and it is the obvious reason of my complaint. The effect and consequence of it is one has to go on with his/her life to be able to reflect upon the recent time as a lucky span of time. It is always very glad to watch back in time when grass was more green and sky was cloudless. The artist comes out of Argentina and this album is a fabulous shift between epic post-rock, lysergic indie electronic and enchanting drone pop/organcore. Because of providing picturesque, slightly orchestrated and emotionally evocative chords it is a fairly proper issue to depict and convey the nature of autumn. Behind that one man project is Julio Yicarean, the talented man whose (obviously debut) album was released under such a great yet still underrated imprint, Gorriòn De Miga. Gem by any standards.

[mikra] – Sonic Selection Vol. 1 (2017)

  • Ambient noise
  • Micronoise
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Electronic music
  • Leftfield
  • Synth fusion
  • Ambient

Comment: how to evaluate the effects of variation in music? How many features are properly enough you are able to discern and analyse without getting suffocated under an avalanche of excessive information? And information you are getting from music could it be paralleled with information you are getting from TV, for example? [mikra]'s 11-notch outing is about avoiding pure information or to say that otherwise it is about pure bits to be channelized through filters of excessive information. The result is schizophrenically perturbed. Like dividing a beatific phenomenon into many parts by immersing it with quite irrelevant and agitated information which nevertheless makes sense ultimately. One great example of it, the track called oUTottuoO is a blend of piano chords which are heavily disturbed by more and less sharp noises coming from everywhere around it. S7 shows its beatific potential because perturbations are more switched off. Submind 1976 reminds me of a witty synthesised progression from the end 70s or beginning of the 80s as if a moody background music for a glittering TV series. Like Miami Vice, for instance. DooOwwNoW, however, it is a quite intact ambient beauty. In fact, I have nothing to add to this bunch of inordinateness and excess. It is a crafty harbinger of decay. The outing is a part of the discography of PZ104ORBIT.

Gabriel Vitel – New New World (2017)

  • House
  • Orchestrated music
  • Remix
  • Alternative dance
  • Electronic music
  • Crossover

Comment: Gabriel Vitel and Alec Troniq are back again after releasing The Aviating in 2015. The story is partly old – the duo`s music is still house paced and even one composition is old taken from The Aviating (Old Tortures) though it is newly produced by using the help by Dortmunder Philarmoniker. There is also up a video of the recording session. On the other side, the new outing seems to be more airy and full-fledged due to sampling instruments from an orchestra or orchestrated music. For instance, at the beginning at the title track you can hear the orchestrations of volatile violins which give the track a dynamic touch which may remind of the music by Arthur Russell at times. Some tracks used to be repeated due to being subjugated to remix process and other edit versions. Electronic meets acoustic in a flawless way while avoiding to be mawkishly bombastic. It is a very good listening session. The 6-track outing is a part of the discography of Broque.

MigloJe – Perception (2017)

  • Ambient drone
  • Microtonal
  • Microsound
  • Minimalism
  • Experimentalism
  • Avant-garde
  • Abstract
  • Dark ambient
  • Leftfield
  • Micronoise

Comment: it is said very exactly at the site of Kahvi Collective that the Lithuanian artist MigloJe is the master of drone in the discography of the imprint. Indeed, Perception is certainly a disparate case if to compare it to other issues I have heard so far. It avoids merry beats, easier synthesised progressions and picturesque compositions, it is being deliberately reserved and sealed in minimal droning and dark ambient aesthetic while arousing the listener's perceptions nevertheless. The structure of compositions used to grow slowly and stepwise. At times the aesthetic of droning is painted with loaded electricity and a wisp of more white coloured (orchestrated) overflows and some electronic effects, glitches, vague clicks and beeps and barely audible rhythms. Less is more and it will be approved eventually. As Malcolm Mooney of CAN once chirped in the beginning of the 70s that silence is an invisible conversation. It is a sublime drift between almost silence and sub-noise/microscopic noise. Of course, you shall have to add your perceptible appearances tightly correlating with them to the whole as well. It is an essential part of the perception. It may be a soundtrack for your nightmares. Highly appreciated in the perception of mine. Take enough time and silence to perceive it accurately. I guess in Lithuanian the title is as Suvokimas

Alex Elgier and Cecilia Quinteros - Hiken! (2017)

  • Free jazz
  • Improvised music
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Electro-acoustic

Comment: first of all, these 27 minutes and some seconds additionally are sexy and puckish. It is played by a man and a woman thereby creating a sultry synergy between each other. Furthermore, the finishing part of the composition is quite eargasmic and ending with a powerful culmination. In fact, it starts off in the same manner. On the other side, it is prankish because of consisting of an improvisational set which in turn consists of an innumerable amount of chords and abrasive key appearances on the piano and the cello respectively as if played on a prepared instrument with an extended technique. I would prefer to call it modal jazz because both instruments used to progress in different directions to eventually meet each other in mutual areas in a quite agitated and frantic way. Like demonstrating the clash between the sexes. And thereafter getting together again. Like the human life supposedly used to be. That's cool, I mean highly ear-provoking even if it is quite austere and abrasive by its instrumental park. Musically it used to be a play with angularity and deformations where the chords will get partly broken and then repaired again. Intensity is a third component within the formula. And it is the basic cycle of the cooperation. The intriguing  outing is a bit in the discography of Pan Y Rosas Discos, a dwelling place for experimental music worldwide.

Neil Scrivin – Twenty Years On Ben Nevis (2008)

  • Ambient
  • Drone
  • DIY
  • Electronic music
  • Lo-fi
  • Dreamwave
  • Drone pop
  • Organcore
  • Mood music

Comment: just discovered that Blackpool musician Neil Scrivin`s both albums Twenty Years On Ben Nevis, and Tomorrow`s World are uploaded at Bandcamp, both of them are remastered and are available in tape format being now closely related to such Blackpudlian imprint as Fonolith. However, my intention is to review it as a bit in the discography of Rack &Ruin Records, a record label reflecting upon an interesting microscopic sonic space at the end of the 00s, and the beginning of the 10s. Rack & Ruin Records had been heading by the Englishman Dean Birkett from 2008 to 2011 whose taste was DIY friendly while experiment orienting. There was up enough noisy indie, peculiar folk-based issues, clumsy lo-fi and bedroom masterminds, warped electronic and deranged ambient-alike stuff. If to name only some artists I would like to denote such artists as Gnomefoam, starstarstar, Tropical Australian Stinger Research Unit, Zgress, Chad Golda, Patrick Hussey, If The People Were Paper, Tyson Brinacombe, Hipster Youth, Dog Bite, Cody England, Gnouli Monsters, Vincent Lillis, The Macadamia Brothers, Lean Horse Marathon, Frost Faire, dessktop, Andy`s Airport Of Love, Chimney Fish. This album of 14 compositions which will clock in at a 35 minute is a sublime drift within droning ambient coated electronic music where the listener can perceive dreamwave-tinged seeds to appear. It is almost (indie) pop music but I have to emphasise the word almost. It is being always admirable if electronic music is produced in dreamy mode (to do it one hs to surpass the mechanical, machine-drenched nature of it). In fact, such sort of sound would mostly get popularized some years ago after the recent release thanks to such artists as Oneothrix Point Never, M Gedded Gengras, Steven Hauschildt. All of that is the contemporary counterpart of Kosmische Musik where adorable vibrations and otherworldly beatific drones are followed by one another or superimposed on eath other. While listening to it you do not need nothing else for your fortune. It sounds like going backwards the past you could find the future from it waiting for you. Originally it was released in 2007 yet at Rack & Ruin it was released one year later.

Good Shade – Lunch (2017)

  • Punk rock
  • Pop rock
  • Alternative rock
  • College rock
  • Psychedelic rock
  • Power pop
  • Agit-pop
  • Pomp rock

Comment: this 15-notch album is the second in a trilogy by considering such topics as access to quality meal (as the title hints at), possibilities to moving upward the societal ladder and disparities in power and privilege. And it is largely influenced by the election of Donald Trump as president. For Shane Natalie who is behind the project it is adverse event. I have no intention to consider the last mentioned aspect but the first mentioned aspects should be more balanced within a society. Of course, total equality as an idea is a sort of utopia because people are different by their abilities, intelligence and wishes and fortitude. We must have no intention to repeat the practice of Red Khmers through a million of corpses. Given that the state as an institution should be as thin as possible and as much be presented as it is needful for a citizen. In a word, the human being needs that basic needs as vitamin enriched food, shelter and solid education could be fulfilled. And for a talented and hard-working individual there should be possibilities to move forward both educationally and therefore socially. Yet do not forget a most important thing – a human being can still be classified as animal and his/her life is a tremendous fight. The societies are still in a latent state of war, i.e all human beings are fighting against each other even if there are the appearances of collaboration. Musically the whole relies on power pop/punk rock/college rock numbers while at times adding psychedelic spices with fingertip. I wish the artist would have added more madness and hystery and exaggerated energy to the music to add more credibility to support his message. At times it chimes in a way too sabbatical mode. The sensitive outing is a bit in the discography of Quote Unquote Records.
