Cuubik. – to James (2016)

  • Indie pop/rock
  • Alternative pop/rock
  • Dream pop
  • Lo-fi
  • DIY
  • Psychedelic rock

Comment: in the 90s there had been the vital indie guitar pop/rock scene in Estonia full of urge and naivety. Probably the most well-known ensemble was Röövel Ööbik, the first combo coming out behind the Iron Curtain to had appeared in John Peel show and had their own session. However, there had been existed such combos as ÖÄK, 1983, Dallas, Dreamphish, Bizarre, The Chance, Afternooning Plague Family, Bimini, Borax, FM Violet, The Choice, Jim Arrow And The Anachrones. In the 00s most of the collectives ended their tenure and new combos were more professional and unfortunately boring and lacklustre. Cuubik. is a contemporary group yet their soundscape sounds very authentic in comparison with the aforementioned era. The members of the combo call their sound fake indie yet it disorienting description. It is an instance of indie/alternative pop/rock at its finest and genuine meaning. It is more than a little bit lo-fi and DIY, it is a little bit dreamy, it is a little bit psychedelic and even employing electronic and dance-appealed sounds at times. I feel myself truly fascinated while listening to these slightly drowsy yet highly enchanting compositions. Highly nostalgic and refreshing at the same time. I do not miss the 90s but I am always ready to rememebr it with a positive word. One can find out a couple of great tracks from within it (Philosophers, Mindgame Mastermind, You and You). You can get a shortened version of the album on tape as well being released on Trash Can Dance.

Comment: this bunch of 13 tracks within the span of 63 minutes establishes a sonic universe filled in with disparate corners, ear-catching progressions and exuberant soundscapes where the listener can enjoy mellow timbres, elemental noises, natural sounds from our world, peaky glitches, creepy drones and elliptically iterative rhythms. At times you can perceive it as if vamped up of debris. As if a soundscape being collected from the bits of sonic junkyard. Ultimately it can be said there is a sort of bold line which unites all the details and minutiae with one another in a gentle way. Of course, the palette is even richer including such elements as hypnotic dream pop (Saloize iii), sublime IDM and glitch-tinged pop (Cetus) and profound ambient/space music (Sureste (Ciudad Inacabada)) which is a positive surprise in any cases. Behind the project is the Spanish musician Sergio Sánchez. This astounding outing is a part of the discography of Pan Y Rosas Discos from Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Art School Jocks – Art School Jocks (2017)

  • Fuzz pop
  • Indie punk
  • Alternative pop/rock
  • Indie pop/rock

Comment: Art School Jocks is a female quartet from Atlanta, Georgia, USA whose music seems to be punk grounded at the first glance yet by going on you get realised it is platform for the chicks to move further to the indie scene. Ali, Deborah, Dianna, and Camille define themselves as existential basement pop band. It might be their most direct relation to punk music is bound through their critical attitude towards some racial and sex relation based concerns and even the footy sense of living pours out from the lyrics. It is sometimes said that the way to hell is pathed with good intentions. You can perceive that feel within it as well. Fortunately the pessimism is supported by solid guitar music coated with fuzzed-out vamps and dreamy glimpses. Given that this short 12-minute outing has been managed to set up a vivid and invigorating whole. The release is a part of the discographies of such labels as Quote Unquote Records, and Father/Daughter Records.

Stereolab in, Metronomic Underground Versions (2017)

  • Indie
  • Alternative
  • Covers
  • Drone pop
  • Organcore

  • Neokrautrock
  • Psych-pop
  • Post-rock

Comment: undoubtedly the first half of the 90s predicted what would be happening at the end of 00s and in the beginning of the 10s. By my opinion by experimental side there were many great experimental pop acts in advance but the most important ones were My Bloody Valentine with its Loveless which can freely be considered the most sultry guitar music ever made. It is the representative of perfect/ideal pop where tenderness was seamlessly intertwined with violet noise the music which is the candidate of your very deep dreams. I personally dreamed of Kevin Shields led combo's music for many years and when getting it finally it was bigger than my dreams used to ever be. Stereolab came from the tradition of C86 and jangle pop (from McCarthy to turning out into something very different. By the way, being partly influenced by MBV, and partly by krautrock-driven motorik beat, particularly by such artists as Neu!, and Faust. Yet the combo's idiosyncrasy come to appear and last for the coming decadences and artists because Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier led distilled something wondrous from a range of diverse styles. From quite straightforward drone pop/organcore in the beginning to more sophisticated incantations through incisive electronic music, psychedelic pop and krautrock and bossa nova and French pop. The future had been presented through the past and present. Like the philosophical proposition that the modes of time cannot be existed without each other. All of that brought the combo forward as a main proponent of the so-called ideal pop. On the other hand, the combo's music justified itself as post-rock essentially rather than the bare stylistic label. If such styles as chillwave came to the terrain it was very understandable for indie people the task of Stereolab as a main linkage and premise to it. The Brazil-based imprint The Blog That Celebrates Itself brings to us a bunch of 15 compositions reflecting upon other possibilities for Stereolab which wouldn't and shouldn't have been realised for. For instance, singing songs with male voices and by employing more rough, lo-fi approach. There are represented such artists as Pia Fraus, Lake Ruth And Listening Center, Nax, Brilliant Beast, The Ludovico Treatment, Sexores, Blue Unit with April Zimont (Glowfriends), A Thousand Hours, The Death of Pop, El Camino de Los Caminos, La Suma de Todos los Tiempos, Waving Blue, Verstarker, Leisure Walks, and Perfectos Extraños. Great miscellany for a great ensemble.

Keith Jars – Huesca EP 1 (2017)

  • Techno
  • Alternative dance
  • Electronic music
  • Acid house
  • Acid techno

Comment: it is great pleasure to spend time with this 4-notch one being issued on Soisloscerdos. Huesca EP 1 reflects upon certain temporal spans in the beginning of the 90s and the end of the 80s while the world was stoned thanks to dope and hypnotically rhythmic music. Oh yeah, it is a wondrous half hour full of wadded cadences, loose oscillations and something else yet certainly magic within it additionally. On the other hand, it is still music from today as one can hear more technical and neurotic approach to it. Beyond that, you shall have to pay attention to the subsequent part of the outing. In a word, it is electronic/dance music as a form of art.

Oberster Wurstesser vs Sigmund Stella Artois – Schlaue Füchse Und Frömmler (2009)

  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Neoclassical
  • Electronic music
  • Alternative
  • Leftfield
  • Post-industrial
  • Primitive music

Comment: music must be fun and ironic, ear provoking and intense, primitive and accomplished. It should unleash beast from within its nature while being ridiculous and serious at the same time. Vaatican Records has been a good platform for artists with the aforementioned description. Minimal and primitive yet intensely compelling sonic progressions are something up there to prove its power and perseverance through an uncanny point of view which does not calculate for nothing because it takes all possibilities for granted. Absolutely democratic and egalitarian yet at the same time being vanguard and innovative. In truth, pop music as an instance is not represented over there. There are represented a couple of artists with dadaist name whose music can be described as experimental electronic music and there is no need to desperately draw the line between the artists because the purpose of this 5-notch outing is to complement each other with audible minutiae. Furthermore, two tracks are up there as collaborative ones. Even as you hear as different sonic aspects as murky neoclassical progressions and glowering synth droning and quite primitive smouldering within the realm of electronic music as parts of the whole. As if getting information from a broken black box or from other dimension. That's fabulous and horrendous at the same time. In a word, get immersed in it to partake in this glass bead game.

Hanetration – Gavia EP (2017)

  • Avant-garde
  • Electronic music
  • Post-industrial
  • Experimentalism
  • Improvised music
  • Experimental electronica
  • Celtic music
  • World music

Comment: Gavia EP is Cornwall-based Hanetration`s ninth outing (all the releases are issued as EPs) and clearly having either no pop ambition or any wish to provide something more clear-cut the UK-based artist continues to develop its profound and interesting soundscape while having clear connotations with the previous issues. It might be the relation is even stronger due to stark experimental approach through dizzying sonic effects and murky electronic scaffolds. In any cases you can find out some new elements from the brand new one of four compositions (for instance, drowsy yet suggestive bagpipe improvisations, “merry” piano chords and exhausted synthesised progressions) yet the whole effect coming out from it seems to be seamless and energizing. One can ask for Zorile of being either Celtic music or not. It is all but lengthy and boring – just 19 minutes in total. In a word, it is still an instance of post-industrial music yet it is going to add more playful and even joyful elements with the every next outing. Yet this merriness may kill an average man who thinks of it as an innocent companion with beer and superficial attitude. Staggering stuff.

  • IDM
  • Experimental electronica
  • Post-rock
  • Electronic music
  • Glitchtronica
  • Ambient
  • Drone
  • Organic electronica

Comment: just checked out to get more exact information of how many times Belarusian Vitaly Harmash aka I/Dex`s music has been appeared at Recent Music Heroes. Most of the albums by Harmash had been reviewed approximately 5-6 years ago and there was a certain reason to do it. For instance, by listening to this 7-notch outing you can get enough support to the cover print of consisting of the waves of oscillation. From granular ambient and sophisticated drone to sublime post-rock moments and ennobling organic electronic music at times running separately, at times running side by side. There are up many signals as intriguing shape-shifters to move on from one state to another. In fact, one can feel himself/herself to be tensioned in a positive way. The stunning issue is a part of the discography of Foundamental Network.

Bruno de Vincenti - Jorge Castro (Fisternni) - Vlisa (2017)

  • Electronic music
  • Minimal techno
  • Deep techno
  • Improvised music
  • Alternative

Comment: these 894 seconds are imbued with sultry magic supposedly thought for consuming at the midnight though in fact it works out at any time of the day. It is a collaborative act between three Argentinian musicians wherein you can perceive minimally sequenced rhythmic structures and synthesised pads with sublime voices and fragile glitched-out bits. It can be said one is probably not able to discern the final part and the finishing part of the composition especially if you have been listening to it endlessly in a row. All of that seems to fade into each other seamlessly, it is like an aural shape of the perfect geometrical element as the ring. It is an astounding sci-fi lullaby for your uneasy spans to fall finally asleep. The issue is a part of the discography of the Chilean imprint Pueblo Nuevo. There is a big chance to meet it sometime at the end of the year again at least at Recent Music Heroes.

Daywand – Oblong Jokes (2017)

  • Dub rock
  • Improvised music
  • Experimental rock
  • Avant-garde
  • Alternative
  • Electronic music
  • Neoclassical

Comment: as much as I have understood this set of 8 tracks is produced by a man called Dylan Anderko. Besides, as much as I have understood this is the first issue by such a fabulous imprint as Restless Life Syndrome being commented at RMH. However, I did not have figured out for a long time what kind of music had been running through my aural channels because all of that is studded with the incessant flow of turns and dodges and because of that the whole seems to be so volatile to get the focus on. It used to make it everywhere and therefore having no certain place and shelter. From dub inflected rough and slowed down rock chords and offbeat electronic whirlpools to smouldering synthesised electronic rhythms and cut-up vowel effects to organic concrete music sounds. Something Alive is certainly Anderko's the most poppy composition based on a fairly catchy hook. Is it going to live and get an indie music (minor) hit? Come On Down gives me a welcome hint to arrive after a while at such an obscure neofolk/neoclassical artist as Art Abscons from Germany. In a word, it is a tremendous wave of interesting sounds and compositions. Just keep holding carefully spot on it.

Cinchel – Temporary Radiance (2017)

  • Art music

Comment: by listening to this 3-notch issue you may hear nothing else but an innumerable amount of layers being tightly put on each other. The result is something amazing but Cinchel has been a brand for a while. An audible, even tangible radiance is present for all those 68 minutes you can feel how the result seems to be melting and billowing from one supposed point to another yet the points are unfixed and unlocated. You are not allowed to point to anywhere. Due to a My Bloody Valentine from Chernobyl may sound in this way. From one peak of sonic hill down up to another being surrounded with thick fog. It is the artsy sort of rock music being produced by an electronic musician. That's fabulous. The issue is a part of the discography of Pan Y Rosas Discos.

Langax – Under The Shadow EP (2017)

  • Electronic music
  • Alternative dance
  • Techno pop
  • Electro pop
  • Tekno
  • Trance
  • Crossover
  • Post-disco
  • Italy disco

Comment: Soisloscerdos is a prospering web-label being active in the belt of rhythm-induced and electronica-drenched music. However, those audible examples I have heard so far on the imprint are way too fidgety, delinquent and unorthodox to be pigeonholed as club dance, though. Moreover, the same could be said within the border of any issue either. From minimally shaped techno oscillations which now and then are intertwined with wobbly trance and bubbling tekno threads to a hirsute yet lofty high-pitched electro outlet. The music at least partly abandons the anonymity of the club dance by using it as a tool to magnify and boost the result. Besides it is clearly influenced by the end of the 70s and the 80s due to a strong impact of Italy Disco and spaced-out electro(nica). The last mentioned comparison is clearly unparalleled at Haute Tension. All in all, it can be concluded this handful of tracks is a cut above because of putting on a sprightly well-balanced show with peaky moments.

Christian Alati – Pietra (2007)

  • Drone
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Minimalism
  • Microtonal
  • Sound Art
  • Leftfield
  • Avant-electronica
  • Post-classical
  • Modern classical

Comment: this couple of very extended compositions clocking in at a 38 minute is not a nascent one. Vice versa, it was released on an imprint called Chew-Z which does not exist anymore. Fortunately another domestic imprint called Grey Sparkle is still with its discography up there. Yet it was supported by another defunct label as Canebagnato Records either. More profoundly, it was issued 10 years ago but the music is in spite of it thoroughly evergreen. Why should it be otherwise, isn't? Although it does not involve catchy hooks in the terms of pop songs it can be considered a poppy instance within the experimental electronic music scene. Pietra 1 is not the kind of it because the artist is inclined to have experiments with electro-acoustic sounds yet at the end of the composition it is going to lose its austere and rigid facade remarkably. At the ending part those subtle droning waves are flowing over the crackling bits and incisive sounds conjured up with contact microphones. It is going to remind me of something being produced by Penguin Cafe Orchestra many decades ago. However, Pietra 2 introduces even the more acquainted associations due to slowed down drones, lengthy piano chords and poignant electronic effects and then as if coming from nowhere putting on a swarm of fantastically chirping cinematic droning which would without any obstacles be the epic finishing backbone to the maudlin motion pictures. In a nutshell, I applaud the effort of Christian Alati.

Drunkeninstrumentcorporation – Always The Same 10 Fucking Songs (2016)

  • Shoegaze
  • Alternative rock
  • Indie rock
  • Fuzz pop
  • Jangle pop
  • Noise pop

Comment: this 10-track issue clocking in at a 33 minute comes out of from Italy, from the deep Cuneo province in the southwest of the Piedmont region of Italy (nearby the border of France). It is the one-man-project of Marco Abbà whose purpose was to put up a fight against boredom by being imaginative and creative. What does it mean always the same 10 fucking songs? Could it be understood in the same way as the propositions as always having sex with the same woman, always doing the same job, any day visiting and posting the blog? By the way, it could be delightful if your understanding and well-being is closely related to it. In case if the aforementioned sources are bottomless are you still intended to abandon them? In fact, I have been listening to this set of fucking songs five times in a row. The more I listen to it the more appealing it seems to be. In fact, it is the merit of this “always the same”. Distorted galvanized guitars, jangly yet still galvanized guitars, lofty synth-based overdrives and poignant electronic sounds and programmed beats atop and at the bottom respectively and tight, coherent structures of songwriting. The listener could hear certain echoes of Bloody Valentine, Ride, Swervedriver and even more distant echoes of post-punk combos yet Drunkeninstrumentcorporation is not the same. The whole contains a couple of amazing compositions as The AtticSea Of Memories, Happy Like A Hurricane, and Blanket. The solid issue is a part of the discography of In Your Ears. Great success.

Troy Spencer – Phase 6 (2016)

  • Cool jazz
  • Modal jazz
  • Improvised music
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Fusion
  • World fusion

Comment: I am being very lucky because of listening to an outing from the discography of the Netherlands-based imprint 2419 Record Label and at the same time feeling sadness about the label's inability to maintain its website. Unfortunately at Archive.org you can find out some very huge aggregates of sonic files just pigeonholed by genres. For instance, to get one slab a music enthusiast must download a huge volume while it may be choking up his/her computer. Hopefully any album will be set aside over there sometime. In truth, 2419 Record Label has been releasing amazing music in many years like the recent outing used to prove it. More profoundly, this set of 10 compositions embraces lots of chord changes and dodges in mood yet it is way too less to say much enough about it. At times it used to happen to chime in a spasmodic and enraptured way while based on the short fuse of free jazz. Musically it may resemble Miles Davis from the end of the 60s, and at the beginning of the 70s filled in with enormous energy while straddling the border between soothing and wild, between more traditional and vanguard, between sane and mind-provoking. Between cool jazz, and modal complexity. On the other hand, we have to understand the whole as a contemporary release of involving more facade and fads. For instance, one can hear the more steep precipices and angular chords of math/technical rock and even some picturesque Balkan gypsy motives now and then. In a word, it is the fabulous listening session.

Tont – Vaba Vesi (2017)

  • Ambient
  • Abstract
  • Experimentalism
  • Avant-garde
  • Field recording
  • Alternative
  • Organic electronica
  • Musique concrète
  • World music
  • Ethnotronica
  • Spoken word

Comment: Tont (Ghost) is the project of Estonian traveller and musician Siim Kuusemäe whose subsequent outing has been managed grossly in a similar way as his previous ones though there are up some different characteristics as well. So it can be said the artist's physical and mental journey goes on. While I am writing this comment I am not listening to a digital copy of it but an exemplary of the limited edition of 48 tapes entitled Vaba Vesi (Free Water) being released on Tallinn-based underground imprint Trash Can Dance. It starts off with reciting one extraction by the Estonian writer Arvo Valton who states that the thought of travelling can be equalled with the thought of living and the experience of travelling makes one feel more excited about and more empathetic and being an integral part of his/her development. It is the most humanity-related phenomenon. It used to correlate with the thought of Heraclitus, the pre-Socratic philosopher from ancient Greece who stated all is moving around and there is no chance to step into one and the same river twice. Similarly Tont has not done it before and does not do it the recent time either. Or is not allowed to do it. Additionally, by Heraclitus Tont may be standing at a crossroad because additionally those prevalent sultry field recording based sounds and shamanic rhythmic patterns one can also hear a more abstract composition at the self-titled track as if hearing passing by the cars at a remote distance while staying somewhere in the middle of the forest. In another piece called Sume Tont exploits more synthetic, artificial templates to create a clear-cut ambient composition in the traditional sense of this word. In a word, Tont issued a subsequent purgatorial outing which can be admitted a best recording in a year. In 2017, more profoundly. Besides his solo albums I recommend put ear on a project, Allinn (at Bandcamp), he has also been get involved in.
