Langax – Under The Shadow EP (2017)

  • Electronic music
  • Alternative dance
  • Techno pop
  • Electro pop
  • Tekno
  • Trance
  • Crossover
  • Post-disco
  • Italy disco

Comment: Soisloscerdos is a prospering web-label being active in the belt of rhythm-induced and electronica-drenched music. However, those audible examples I have heard so far on the imprint are way too fidgety, delinquent and unorthodox to be pigeonholed as club dance, though. Moreover, the same could be said within the border of any issue either. From minimally shaped techno oscillations which now and then are intertwined with wobbly trance and bubbling tekno threads to a hirsute yet lofty high-pitched electro outlet. The music at least partly abandons the anonymity of the club dance by using it as a tool to magnify and boost the result. Besides it is clearly influenced by the end of the 70s and the 80s due to a strong impact of Italy Disco and spaced-out electro(nica). The last mentioned comparison is clearly unparalleled at Haute Tension. All in all, it can be concluded this handful of tracks is a cut above because of putting on a sprightly well-balanced show with peaky moments.

Christian Alati – Pietra (2007)

  • Drone
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Minimalism
  • Microtonal
  • Sound Art
  • Leftfield
  • Avant-electronica
  • Post-classical
  • Modern classical

Comment: this couple of very extended compositions clocking in at a 38 minute is not a nascent one. Vice versa, it was released on an imprint called Chew-Z which does not exist anymore. Fortunately another domestic imprint called Grey Sparkle is still with its discography up there. Yet it was supported by another defunct label as Canebagnato Records either. More profoundly, it was issued 10 years ago but the music is in spite of it thoroughly evergreen. Why should it be otherwise, isn't? Although it does not involve catchy hooks in the terms of pop songs it can be considered a poppy instance within the experimental electronic music scene. Pietra 1 is not the kind of it because the artist is inclined to have experiments with electro-acoustic sounds yet at the end of the composition it is going to lose its austere and rigid facade remarkably. At the ending part those subtle droning waves are flowing over the crackling bits and incisive sounds conjured up with contact microphones. It is going to remind me of something being produced by Penguin Cafe Orchestra many decades ago. However, Pietra 2 introduces even the more acquainted associations due to slowed down drones, lengthy piano chords and poignant electronic effects and then as if coming from nowhere putting on a swarm of fantastically chirping cinematic droning which would without any obstacles be the epic finishing backbone to the maudlin motion pictures. In a nutshell, I applaud the effort of Christian Alati.

Drunkeninstrumentcorporation – Always The Same 10 Fucking Songs (2016)

  • Shoegaze
  • Alternative rock
  • Indie rock
  • Fuzz pop
  • Jangle pop
  • Noise pop

Comment: this 10-track issue clocking in at a 33 minute comes out of from Italy, from the deep Cuneo province in the southwest of the Piedmont region of Italy (nearby the border of France). It is the one-man-project of Marco Abbà whose purpose was to put up a fight against boredom by being imaginative and creative. What does it mean always the same 10 fucking songs? Could it be understood in the same way as the propositions as always having sex with the same woman, always doing the same job, any day visiting and posting the blog? By the way, it could be delightful if your understanding and well-being is closely related to it. In case if the aforementioned sources are bottomless are you still intended to abandon them? In fact, I have been listening to this set of fucking songs five times in a row. The more I listen to it the more appealing it seems to be. In fact, it is the merit of this “always the same”. Distorted galvanized guitars, jangly yet still galvanized guitars, lofty synth-based overdrives and poignant electronic sounds and programmed beats atop and at the bottom respectively and tight, coherent structures of songwriting. The listener could hear certain echoes of Bloody Valentine, Ride, Swervedriver and even more distant echoes of post-punk combos yet Drunkeninstrumentcorporation is not the same. The whole contains a couple of amazing compositions as The AtticSea Of Memories, Happy Like A Hurricane, and Blanket. The solid issue is a part of the discography of In Your Ears. Great success.

Troy Spencer – Phase 6 (2016)

  • Cool jazz
  • Modal jazz
  • Improvised music
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Fusion
  • World fusion

Comment: I am being very lucky because of listening to an outing from the discography of the Netherlands-based imprint 2419 Record Label and at the same time feeling sadness about the label's inability to maintain its website. Unfortunately at Archive.org you can find out some very huge aggregates of sonic files just pigeonholed by genres. For instance, to get one slab a music enthusiast must download a huge volume while it may be choking up his/her computer. Hopefully any album will be set aside over there sometime. In truth, 2419 Record Label has been releasing amazing music in many years like the recent outing used to prove it. More profoundly, this set of 10 compositions embraces lots of chord changes and dodges in mood yet it is way too less to say much enough about it. At times it used to happen to chime in a spasmodic and enraptured way while based on the short fuse of free jazz. Musically it may resemble Miles Davis from the end of the 60s, and at the beginning of the 70s filled in with enormous energy while straddling the border between soothing and wild, between more traditional and vanguard, between sane and mind-provoking. Between cool jazz, and modal complexity. On the other hand, we have to understand the whole as a contemporary release of involving more facade and fads. For instance, one can hear the more steep precipices and angular chords of math/technical rock and even some picturesque Balkan gypsy motives now and then. In a word, it is the fabulous listening session.

Tont – Vaba Vesi (2017)

  • Ambient
  • Abstract
  • Experimentalism
  • Avant-garde
  • Field recording
  • Alternative
  • Organic electronica
  • Musique concrète
  • World music
  • Ethnotronica
  • Spoken word

Comment: Tont (Ghost) is the project of Estonian traveller and musician Siim Kuusemäe whose subsequent outing has been managed grossly in a similar way as his previous ones though there are up some different characteristics as well. So it can be said the artist's physical and mental journey goes on. While I am writing this comment I am not listening to a digital copy of it but an exemplary of the limited edition of 48 tapes entitled Vaba Vesi (Free Water) being released on Tallinn-based underground imprint Trash Can Dance. It starts off with reciting one extraction by the Estonian writer Arvo Valton who states that the thought of travelling can be equalled with the thought of living and the experience of travelling makes one feel more excited about and more empathetic and being an integral part of his/her development. It is the most humanity-related phenomenon. It used to correlate with the thought of Heraclitus, the pre-Socratic philosopher from ancient Greece who stated all is moving around and there is no chance to step into one and the same river twice. Similarly Tont has not done it before and does not do it the recent time either. Or is not allowed to do it. Additionally, by Heraclitus Tont may be standing at a crossroad because additionally those prevalent sultry field recording based sounds and shamanic rhythmic patterns one can also hear a more abstract composition at the self-titled track as if hearing passing by the cars at a remote distance while staying somewhere in the middle of the forest. In another piece called Sume Tont exploits more synthetic, artificial templates to create a clear-cut ambient composition in the traditional sense of this word. In a word, Tont issued a subsequent purgatorial outing which can be admitted a best recording in a year. In 2017, more profoundly. Besides his solo albums I recommend put ear on a project, Allinn (at Bandcamp), he has also been get involved in.

  • Electronic music
  • Alternative
  • Musique concrète
  • Improvised music
  • Field recording
  • Experimental electronica
  • Leftfield
  • Art music

Comment: let's go back in time for about five years when a duo called TÜNEL recorded an imaginary soundtrack for mountaineering and possible disastrous events tightly related to it. These seven tracks constitute a terrain where different influences and genres meet one another. Furthermore, it is a mind-provoking storytelling based on sounds which starts off with sprightly children shouting and then progressing into different kinds of electronic music and surprisingly into a noisy rock binge played flat out. It can be asserted it is the frenetic follow-up of disparate chapters full of loads of turns and dodges, exciting interfaces to connect and superimpose different parts on each other and imaginative buildups to show up this kinda audiobook as vivid and magical. Mostly its structure seems to be preset and determined yet at times the duo indulges in having more loose and elemental spans to be added to the mix. You can feel prodigious inner power and impulse oozing from different slots and pits which is not surprising because the intention and goal is to depict the mountainous, threatening landscape up to the listener. This astounding outing is a part of the discography of the Italy-based record label Nostress.

Marrach – Swing With A Black Dog (2017)

  • Jazz
  • Electronic music
  • Improvised music
  • Cool jazz
  • Film noir
  • Alternative
  • Mood music

Comment: Martinas Rakshtinas, the pride of the Lithuanian underground music is being known under a swarm of pseudonyms which in turn does mean he has been a prolific artist for the last 2-3 years. Lately I had reviewed one of the issues by him under the nom de plume Mirth Naarc and the outing was named FX (2016, Free Music Archive). The 3-notch issue entitled ominously Swing With A Black Dog and thereby tipping off about the parlous allusions with the Lucifer is a turn of 360 degrees in comparison to FX. The last mentioned release was techno, electro and experimental hip-hop blended one though which ultimately turned into quite oppressive by its mood and outfit. The album in consideration is musically slowed-down, smoky and noir tinged behind that sonic curtain the Devil is playing with human beings and their souls as marionettes. Bold minor chords on a piano are backed up with volatile trumpet played tooting and kit drum shuffles and superficial electronic effects atop and behind it. The predominant silence induced layers add seductive touch to get craftily immersed in the rest set of layers. Another impression is as lofty as well due to Miles Davis is playing woeful cool jazz numbers in front of the Fallen Angel himself. The outing is a part of the discography of a stalwart Portuguese imprint, Enough Records (or simply enoughrecords). In a nutshell, the whole impression is emotionally striking and at the same time showing us something coming out from the pit. Put a spell on you.

Lorenzo Gómez Oviedo – Pasajes (2016)

  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Noise
  • Art music
  • Experimental electronica
  • Post-industrial
  • Sound art
  • Drone
  • Spoken word
  • Musique concrète
  • Post-classical

Comment: without any doubt the previous year was being very fertile to Lorenzo Gòmez Oviedo while he had released 4 issues, a couple of them were released on the French imprint Nowaki Music. One of them, Pasajes consists of the long-running progression which is imbued with remarkably varied sounds, provoking intentions, arousing intensities and ear-catching phase-related changes. However, the aforementioned gadgetry is adeptly and wittily set up and thereby ultimately creating a dynamic pointed whole throughout the course of a 25-minute. Incisive droning noises in the beginning part are followed by a sublime rhythmic section and cathedral-alike chanting which in turn are followed by new mind-provoking ones including peppering with field recording drenched elements. The kind of electronic music presented by Oviedo is something special because of embracing wider borders to narrate an interesting, seemingly more loose story to all of us. Indeed, literally it involves some spoken phrases though it seems to be a shrewd measure but not the goal on its own. Maybe I am wrong to guess there is up somewhere the ultimate culmination to be reached. In fact, it consists of various flood tides therefore providing a chance to sustain the excitement and pleasure throughout. Is it the hedonistic one? Yes, in a way but first of all, it is the cerebral challenge with some bits for our soul and slightly a bit for the body. It pours out an immense amount of information yet the information is channelized in an appealing way. Top tier.

  • Ambient
  • Microsound
  • Minimalism
  • Electronic music
  • Microtonal
  • Ambient rock
  • Soundscape
  • Alternative

Comment: this set of 6 tracks (clocking in at a 28 minute) is viable to be listened to while you feel yourself sad for some bitter events, for instance, if you remind of your broken affairs though it is hard to figure out is it either the effect of it or a very arousing reason for doing it. While feeling an intense painful sense coming inexplicably out from very deep of your heart. On the other side, while driving across the foggy and very snowy highway you could see even more details in comparison to a usual cloudless day because you have to be more concentrated and you are tightly surrounded by a milky ambience to catch sight of other kind of details. Or you can experience the same feeling when you are driving the bus and your head is leaned against the window and watching drops running sinuously and at different speeds from top of the window. There are represented some audible characteristics which chime on their own and on the other side do interact seamlessly with one another. The aforementioned whitened sublime progressions include some reverberant sounds, some more light-hearted, clearly perceived as more crude, directly played and untreated, synthesiser played interludes (for instance, Microsound). For instance, the track called Undertone sounds almost in a psychedelic way. The following composition Mute Witness changes the path of the course (back again) to thriving into something thoroughly thoughtful and beatifically frost-bound and charmingly immobile as if an audible example of an aporia by Zenon about moving and staying still (the second part of the track evokes your soul to crawl). At the finishing 21 experimental rock tendencies stepwise begin to emerge and swim and lazily produce sonic waves of different shapes and range. The fascinating outing is a part of the discography of Webbed Hand.

Go Ask Alice – Perfection Is Terrible (2017)

  • Art rock
  • Post-rock
  • Experimental rock
  • Epic
  • Synth-rock
  • Electro-rock
  • Cinematic
  • Ambient rock

Comment: La bèl is an Italian imprint having been releasing music since 2010. All their artists with some exceptions are being Italian even if the artist's residence has been outside the country's borders. Musically it has embraced a huge range of styles from witty electronica and subtle indie and folk mixed electronic music to artsy electro-acoustic progressions and epic post-rock driven ambience. Go Ask Alice's Perfection Is Terrible is a subsequent solid chapter within the discography by getting hold of different styles of the kind of synthesiser and guitar-driven music. Furthermore, the result is blissful thanks to some cinematic development as if being languished by the sun during a very hot summer day. You do not have enough power and verve but just lay back in the hammock. Let's call it the sort of guitar-based chill out music. With regard to exploiting or imitating such instruments as glockenspiel/vibraphone you can discern some similarities with such artists as Talk Talk, Mice Parade, The Dylan Group, Tortoise, The Mercury Program though Go Ask Alice's music is distinctively more hovering and volatile. Besides the aforementioned elements there are also magniloquent elements yet the result is pushed to the very limits of elegance. Last but not least – there is up a track imbued with a hook of great pop potential (Morning). In a word, it runs head-to-head with the best issues from the recent year. Behind the project are such musicians as Flavio Moro and Lorenzo Albanese, and Valerio Occhiodoro. Undoubtedly this sprightly 7-track outing is one of the most favourite albums from the recent year.

Antiplano – Prohibido (2012)

  • Experimental electronica
  • Alternative
  • Avant-electro
  • Electronic music
  • Drone
  • Minimalism

Comment: this bunch of 5 compositions consists of minimally evolving tracks where glowering drones are tightly mingled with ever changing sinuous poly-rhythms being frequently subjugated to stereophonic effects and mind-provoking pitch trickery. Machines are keeping us from being the slaves of our own including listening habits. They introduce us to a universe being wondrous simultaneously due to its fidgety roughness and restless mysticism. While listening to the intense record you can catch your breath. Indeed, it is fortunately all but a mentally oppressive shit. Although it does not involve many layers it will get hold of our thoughts and secretive wishes in a linear way. Throughout the course the artist provides a steady feedback to the previous points passed by. The result is coherent nevertheless how serpentine and disjunct it may be perceived. This pre-eminent outing is a part of the discography of Soisloscerdos Netlabel.

Comment: these 53 minutes and 4 compositions are “dedicated” to nuclear accidents in the atomic energy plants around the world. More profoundly, at Lucens (1969), Chernobyl (1986), Kyshtym (1957), Three Mile Island (1979), and most recently at Fukushima Daiichi (2011). These are probably the most remarkable ones though smaller accidents may have been happening. Shit happens if people are doing things even if these processes are indispensable because of the mooch of the human induced economy is going to move on without possibility getting to decelerate the process. I do not think of it the nuclear reactors must be shut down just measures to avoid such sort of disasters should be even more enhanced and possible deviations to be foreseen. However, musically I tagged it as an instance of post-industrial music among the other classifications. Furthermore, one can figure it out in a very straight way. The music over there is to depict industrialized scenes being abandoned by human beings. Besides having gotten informed factually and chronologically about these highly clutch and events the audible result is staggering – lots of memory loaded hisses and glitches, arousing sonic effects, concrete music drenched glimpses, metallic drones at times being variegated with orchestrations and less abrasive electronics. These 53 minutes is a subtle play with shades between darkness and lightness, between a burden and redemptive freeing. The adverse effects are adeptly converted into a state of art. The issue is a part of the discography of Murmure Intemporel. Behind the nom de plume is Jean-Luc Hervé Berthelot, a prolific artist within the netlabel scene for many years.

Mmöner – Training Saga (2017)

  • Electronic music
  • Fantasy music
  • Mood music
  • Alternative
  • Primitive music
  • Avant-garde

Comment: the mystical creature named Mmöner is back with his/her sophomore outing called Training Saga. The artist describes it as old stuff about training skills. Because of that it can be admitted ideologically he/she has stepped out of the forest theme (Forest Eruption, 2016) to put the finger into a sport/training theme. Instead of glorifying and mystifying the forest as our very genuine home the new subject is remarkably more human-related and mundane, even dealing with obvious banalities (though I guess it is imbued with a tongue-in-cheek attitude). Yet musically the difference does not make sense because sonically the outings are tightly correlated. Continually you can visualise and thereby think off a kernel of sounds getting inspiration from the fantasy music soundtracks which in turn are mingled with primitive electronic developments and childish rhythmic patterns which eventually will result in the somehow hyper realistic flow of peaky, exalting, saturated chords. As if the set of three tracks being overloaded with a torrent of serotonin and being warped by the fairy-tales surfacing deep from your subconsciousness you had heard that in your childhood. Even if it's formal appearance is to be moody it's deeper intention is to enter into into the listener's brain and provide an immensely complex experience. Fir sure, it is an uncanny listening session at the recent times.

Comment: if I can remember for the right way once there existed such an imprint as Milano, Italy-based Paragrafo Records which was reclaimed as having focus on weird, electronic and experimental music. One of the artists coming out from there was Berlin, Germany-based Mogadiscio Ensemble. Unfortunately almost all the traces behind the imprint are gone (just a couple of issues are uploaded at Bandcamp) though fortunately the combo is up there at Bandcamp to provide an immense set of 38 tracks. The amount of the compositions is big enough to write a solid column about it. First of all, it is huge enough to get enough material to feed your ears and brain. More profoundly, the average track within it is quite short of being approximately 2-3 minute long and containing a shitloads of diverse ideas. From old school industrial synthesised layers and rough yet vivid rhythms, deliberately clogged-up progressions of the lo-fi and DIY culture, appealing outsider house numbers, off-kilter, outsider jazz induced developments. It may resemble a bit an early Cabaret Voltaire which had provided different impulses and ideas on industrial and post-punk to further progress into a wider audience appealed compartment, more profoundly to trod seminally on dance music, post-disco, proto-house music. At times it chimes as if being channelized through some shitty filters and cables. Yet the result, however, is very elegant. On the other side, the title does have a clear hint at Aphex Twin`s Selected Ambient Works 85-92 which similarly did provide an episodic coincidence with the ambient style. In fact, there is no classical ambient structures within that whole, there are up only some fragments of reminding of the style. However, there may be behind a methodology of deconstructing the style. Anyhow the result is a top predator.

Mirth Naarc – FX (2016)

  • Electronic music
  • Alternative dance
  • Urban music
  • Electro
  • Hip-hop
  • Glitch-hop

Comment: this handful of tracks is created by Martinas Rakshtinas aka Martin Rach, a prolific and talented artist from Lithuania. Mirth Naarc is one of the projects of him and this album of 22 minutes is tagged by him as techno, dance, and abstract hip-hop. More profoundly, spiky incisive drumming is tightly mixed up with an electro matter if to describe it in a gross way. Yet stylistically it is a case of contemporary hip-hop music where digitalised technology and a multi-faceted rhythmic approach prevail the course. A lot of different rhythmic shapes which either are followed by each other or used to be superimposed on each other partly. Emotionally its lightheartedness is beguiling because the ultimate impact of it can be quite dystopia-related and therefore depressive. The machines are governing over a human being mercilessly. Without any emotion, without any discrimination. The issue is released on Folksoundomy, and Free Music Archive.

Malicious Wonderland – Wasteland (2017)

  • Electronic music
  • Leftfield
  • Post-industrial
  • Drone
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Industrial techno

Comment: since reading the artist's name and the title of the album I got aware of a possibility that wonderland can be malicious and the scene of the play can be performed in the middle of the wasteland. Indeed, it is a serious play with blackened, ill-omened soundscapes and varied rhythms where austere, rusty noises are amplified to an extent where the changes in the quantity used to redound in the quality. In a word, post apocalyptic metallic shrieks and steely lurking and iteratively emitting diabolical orchestrations do constitute the predominant layer within the 12-notch course. By exploring the discography you can see the artist is inclined to focus on darkened, murky themes like dystopia, and darkness veiled within our hearts. Behind the project is the same artist who is being known as Reflections From Nowhere.

Lezet – Intimate (2017)

  • Electronic music
  • Improvised music
  • Alternative
  • Primitive music

Comment: I am quite stricken of how and at which degree Igor Jovanovic decided to change his mind and path in comparison to his previous outing Aether (2016, Kermesse). He abandoned his way of previously walking along modern classical, drone, chamber music pieces to recently provide something which can be described as if slow burning in improvised music on a helium-filled keyboard which sounds due to relentless tooting quite similarly to a treated bagpipe. It seems to be so primitive and gawky it will make fun to a listener. Is it the music of the free jazz musician who lost the gravity? May it be way too intimate being only understandable to the composer only? The only exception in the row of short-running compositions is Teeth wherein one can hear remarkably cranked-up sound yet the formula is analogous. This 7-notch outing is a bit in the discography of Etched Traumas.

Comment: if to compare this 7-notch outing to H Stewart`s Letter to Kansas City (2011, Folksoundomy) being commented yesterday at RMH one can find out some gross similarities. First of all, it involves chords induced by a keyboard and this in turn is being wrapped up by austere, glitched-out noise clouds wiggling and wobbling like an outing by a rabid composer of having gotten back his/her inspiration recently and now he/she is very enthusiastic to flood a track with a bunch of different bits and methods. Gaga over. Lady Gaga over? No, it is a different, more subtle story with regard to the superstar. On the other side, if Letter to Kansas City can be considered the songwriter album of H Stewart so far then Hybrid does not provide focus on lyrics. There is up one track which chimes like a record from a nightmarish comedy session being backed up by gruesome electronic music and at times there are up some snippets of spoken word. However, having your ears to be set on these compositions more closely you can feel true richness of the album. Furthermore, this album is to set different parts against each other thereby establishing a dynamic contrast. Calmness and silence created through the aforementioned piano and clavichord chords and pulsating, piercing droning, intense electronic bubbling and torrents of modest white noise on the other side are adeptly juxtaposed. However, at Inner Voices one can surprisingly perceive of how those intense signals can be emotive and gentle in a way. In a nutshell, listen to it and get wowed away with it. That's invigorating and exalting. The outing is a part of the Chicago, Illinois,US-based imprint Pan Y Rosas Discos. Isabel Nogueira is a female musicologist-artist from Porto Alegre, Brazil whose music can be compared with the likes of Big City Orchestra, Maja Ratkje, Laurie Anderson, Zoviet France.

H Stewart – Parker Square (2011)

  • Singer-songwriter
  • Electronic music
  • Piano music
  • Alternative
  • Avant-pop
  • Experimental pop

Comment: this handful of pieces are composed by an American artist, H Stewart and released by an imprint, Folksoundomy. She is being known as vowel, sound poetry artist dwelling deep in the avant-garde/experimental music scene first of all. This time she releases her emotions and memories. Indeed, you can partake of those flickering sparse undulations being tapped out on a cheap Casio keyboard and being surrounded by austere sonic effects coming out from a laptop. The result is impressive in its heartbreaking longing and ennobling soul pain showcasing H Stewart is also a solid singer if needed. Indeed, the strength of the outing is that her intimate incantations are delicately stripped down and addressed because of that showing up its inner magic and power. This is music I would like to listen to during late and lonely hours.

Comment: Marco Cervellin`s set of 8 compositions is a fairly corroborant flow of pastel-alike string chords and synthetic glimpses and hovering orchestrations which have been presented either in a linear way or in a iterative way. Both ways are to make sense while making difference from each other. He has been producing his music in the Italian countryside because of that I guess the result is so organic and picturesque and cinematic. On the other side, behind him is an immense experience and wisdom of the Italian history in music and especially in film scores and Italian turn of mind while avoiding to be an excessively sugary outing so let's sum up all of that to ultimately get the recent result. The more I listen to it the more I am losing the stylistic borders of his music which in turn of course, is the sign of universality in his music. There must be that compelling essence to come out from the tracks. You can draw parallels upon the likes of Ennio Morricone, and The Pink Floyd yet Cervellin`s does have its own way to go forward. You will not search for gems for a long time. A cut above.
