[Compilation] New Weird Australia - Western Schism (2012)

9.1

/Avant-garde, Weird folk, Experimentalism, Free folk, Crossover, Indie folk, Dream folk, Experimental electronica, DIY/

Comment: it might be that our imagination and understanding of the term "New Weird" is closely related to the new wave of folk-based music in the United States started off in the first half of the 00s sometime. However, by having listened to the array of compilations of New Weird Australia-centered miscellanies this music is far away beyond the folk-embraced pales. More concretely, by enjoying this 18-track issue there can be perceived a divergent array of hints and tastes spiced up with experiments and electronic oddities. There are represented sub jazz weirdos, spaced-out lo-fi contemplations, psychedelic funk propulsions, obscure pitch-shifted electronic endeavours, mesmeric rhythm sections, uncompromising avant-prog hovers and much more else. There are up such artists as Leaving, Salamander, FM Raster, Jane Harris, Brown, The Gulls, Mental Powers, Javier Frisco, Ourobonic Plague, Solar Barge,  Furchick, Eleventeen Eston, James Ireland & Andrew Sinclair, Predrag Delibasich, Kućka, Craig McElhinney.

Lowercase Noises - Blake (2013)

9.5

/Post-rock, Experimental rock, Chamber rock/

Comment: LN is the prolific project by Andy Othling hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. His set of handful of tracks are dedicated to his newborn son. More concretely, the compositions do showcase instrumental post-rock mannerism and elements closely related to it. On the other side, emotionally it is a slowly growing one composed of lush guitar chord progressions, orchestrated overdrives where light-hearted notes are variegated with bold ones. However, at times he used to flirt with more experimental facets providing some pitch-shifted slices, sample-heavy snippets, and glockenspiel-induced beauty. In a nutshell, congratulations both on having the child and excellent release.

Captain Raveman - Quick 'n' Dirty (2013)

8.8

/Breakcore, Jungle, Drill and bass, Crossover, Bhangra, Experimental electronica, Alternative dance/

Comment: these 6 tracks are created by Marlon Beijer aka Negrobeat whose music makes difference due to breaks/jungle-induced rafts, drilling (semi-)noises and even rattling bhangra motives. Indeed, it might be you used to be a little bit dicey about the aforementioned combinations of sound but he has managed it to come off in defined way. All in all, it is a simultaneously danceable and thought-provoking issue for your sake.

Joywcs - Moonshine (2012)

9.4

/Post-rock, Ambient, Ambient rock, Guitar ambient, Soundscapes/

Comment: Joywcs is a guy called Marat from Perm, Russia. His 2-track issue is a sparkly, full-fledged ambient and post-rock soaked one full of magical echoes and beatific hovers. Marat`s chord progressions on guitars are amplified and surfaced thanks to lush reverberation-filled layers. His music represents an example of how beauty uncompromisingly outweights conventions.

James Lowery - Piety (2012)

8.9

/Electronic pop, Kosmische Musik, Leftfield, Downtempo, Krautrock, Alternative/

Comment: Pittsburgh-based James Lowery is an artist who has issued an awing array of albums under his own imprint Swaying Smoke, additionally he heads up the self-titled blog dedicated to the free music. However, his 9-track being spreaded out over 36 minutes is composed of rusty breaks, downtempo-esque rhythm patterns which in turn are either varied or blended with calm synth overdrives, whimisical rhythm progressions. At times Lowery`s gloomy motives do peek into Kosmische Musik/krautrock aesthetics. The most convincing tracks coming out from within it are Waterfall, Red Leaves, Scratch Your Eyes, and Plastic Things

suRRism-Phonoethics - Titanium Wind

Dancing Deadlips - Dancing Deadlips (2012)

9.5

/Avant-garde, Experimentalism, Improvised music, Art punk, Avant-punk, No Wave, Spoken word, Organic electronica, Gothic, Psychedelic, Noise/

Comment: Kraków-Berlin-based duo Dancing Deadlips´ 4-track issue exemplifies an instance of how concrete sounds and reverb-enriched poetry are concocted with psychedelic yet somehow ominous improvisation-based mist. It is up to stimulate the listener`s mind and provoke the thought. You can call it "afterpunk" in the way it is tagged at Lastfm. There can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Lydia Lunch, and Patti Smith (some episodes in her discography).

Just Handshakes - London Bound (2013)

9.4

/Indie pop, Alternative pop/rock, Jangle pop, Electronic pop, Remixes/

Comment: Leeds-based collective Just Handshakes` single involves a pair of pieces, one of them is the original one, and the other one is a clattery, a little glitchy electronica remix version of it by James Hare. The result is devastating on the strength of dashing guitars, suggestive female vocal lines, cloudless synthesizer passages, and propulsive drums. Just Handshake seems to be influenced by chiming Rickenbacker guitar magic, post-punk-ish rhythm impulses, and blonde hair indie divas. On the other side, it can be considered like a version of a string centered St Etienne (imagine of all those lush melodies and catchy hooks).

  • Alternative pop
  • Americana

Bob Meanza - Three Diamond Ohms (2013)

9.2

/Conceptual, Avant-garde, Experimentalism, Psychedelia, Progressive/

Comment: this set of 3 compositions is composed on a vintage CRB transistor organ. The result is challenging due to torrents of a poignant key changes and irrefutable progressions into psychedelic cascades and crescendos. By recording the issue Bob Meanza gave nod to the composition techniques of avant-garde music composers a la Wendy Carlos, and progressive rock approaches. Indeed, all of the aforementioned cues are hearable on it.

Black Cocks - Sweet Illutions (2013)

9.3

/Space rock, Dark ambient, Experimental rock, Improvised music, Avant-garde, Classical music/

Comment: the spaniard Mauricio Diaz Varela aka Black Cocks takes on 5 tracks in a diverse way. It starts off with mesmeric dark ambient compositions full of monotonous  black walls and grey electro-acoustic floors and ceilings. In between that you can perceive weird vibrations, microtonal noises, and ghostly exhales. On the other side, there is also represented a tough yet atmospheric edge of experimental rock, intriguing rhythmic explorations and demented classical music appearances concocted with concrete sounds. Ubiquitous experience.

Quanthe - Sähkomagnetismi (2012)

9.0

/Avant-electronica, Noise, Experimental electronica, Abstract electronica, Improvised noise/

Comment: if you like cutting edge electronica blended with microtonal noises, more abstraction-induced repetitions, filtered subrhythms and static pulses then this 2-track release is truly worth to become immersed in. Quanthe`s aesthetics reminds a little bit of borealic reverb-soaked noises of Pan Sonic or Grunt, and furthermore, thereby peeking into the mindset of Erkki Kurenniemi`s sonic experiments, for instance.

Various Artists - Retork (2003)

9.2

/Experimental electronica, Electronic pop, Glitchtronica, Chiptune, Soul funk, Downtempo, IDM/

Comment: Retork is a compilation album by Enough Records, a Portugese record label. It involves the manning of such artists as Mosaik, Aisth, Kilowatt heaturing Synesthesia, Sense, Makunouchi Bento, Duncan Avoid, Xhale, Julien Neto, Kschzt, Khonnor, Quobe, Fysiz featuring Netpoet, Sinespree, Nullsleep. However, stylistically this 12-track issue extends from peaceful yet profound IDM/downtempo freights to more angular glitchy paces, from chiptune-tinged acid dashes to catchy autotune soul funk. These exhales used to be on the ball by any means.

[Teaser of the day] Estamos Fritos - Sangre en la banqueta

LQ - Psycho Androgyny (2007)

8.8

/Breakcore, Drill and bass, Experimental electronica, Noise, Avant-electronica/

Comment: there are up a handful of pieces stylistically providing an abrasive sonic punch of lo-fi electronica, jungle-driven rhythms, effect-laden ravaged contours and less and more neat cuts of noises. In short, the album can be regarded an example of harsh breakcore, or drill and bass thereby being an intriguing and thought-provoking one.

Inspite - Strong and Bitter Words Indicate A Weak Cause (2013)

9.2

/Powerviolence, Hardcore punk, Screamo, Brutal metal, Grindcore/

Comment: there are represented 22 short-running tracks (some of them do embrace some seconds only). It is made up of a huge barrage of obsessive energy and rage taking on hardcore punk, technical metal, violent screamo. More concretely, all of that is built upon desperately shouting vocal lines, streaked guitar lines and heavily pummeling drums. However, the result is believable and convincing. You can consider it as an instance of American anti-dream. The album was recorded in 1998. It might be quite surprising but one of those guys behind the project was Nicholas Vance who heads up the indie/shoegaze/fuzz pop/neo-psychedelic combo Kent State now.

Dadala - Baktun Mementos (2013)

Lastfm

9.1

/Experimentalism, Avant-garde, Sampledelic, Crossover, Fusion, Progressive rock/

Comment: Dadala is a virtual ensemble whose 8-track album sounds like a smorgasbord of less and more experimental styles and elements veering away free jazz-mixed art rock/fusion/and World Music, sampledelic pours (including animal voices interspersed with squeaking and crisp sonic bits). Forwards, it can be said it is conceptually a shift between chaos and structured units, energizing tension between them.

?alos – Ricamatrici (2012)

/No Wave, Avant-garde, Experimentalism, Musique concrète, Noise, Psycho-acoustic/

Comment: behind this project is a frantic woman from Italy, Stefania Pedretti whose 13-track issue is filled with cutting edge tendencies, however, experimenting with nihilistic warbling and operatic singing, manipulating with concrete sounds, sonic effects, and sublime noises. The result is as big as her previous one, called Recordi Indelebili, though, having no spot directed upon art punk/post-punk experiments and power. There can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Meredith Monk, Joan LaBarbara, Maja Ratkje.

2muchachos - Forest Is Not What It Seems (2013)

9.3

/Dreamwave, Avant-pop, Slowcore, Baroque pop, Chamber pop, Hypnagogic pop, Experimental indie/

Comment: it has always been a great pleasure to listen to the Russian sonic wonder 2muchachos` releases. This time the trio`s brand new one seems to be trudged more through elfin and fairy tale-ish woods if to compare it to the previous ones. More concretely, those old-fashioned analogue synths are to provide otherworldly feeling, oneiric pace, sublime harmonies, and a little bit ghostly wraparounds. Ont the other side, there are also represented slowcore-ish guitar-driven progressions giving the whole a more accentuated envelope. Hopefully the human race will die off before the forests and woods will be ravaged. It might be we do not deserve this world.

Michelle Cross & Joe Frawley - Scenes From The Doll Hospital

The Thinker - Age Of Machines EP (2013)

9.2

/Industrial techno, Experimental techno, Avant-techno, Alternative dance/

Comment: there are up 6 tracks spreaded out a tiny bit over 30 minutes full of the mazes of glowering techno rhythms. Indeed, it is thoroughly urban music straddling on monotonously droning machines, hinting at powerful acid attacks and dealing with irreversible industrial processes. It sounds like a Kraftwerk-ian dream of gloomy-grade. Good for you in any cases.

Freelance Whales - NoiseTrade Sampler (2012)

9.7

/Indie pop, Baroque pop, Alternative pop, Art pop, Americana, Chamber pop, Psychedelic rock/

Comment: these 6 tracks are provided by a Queens, NY-based alternative rock quintet, called Freelance Whales who has issued two studio albums so far (Weathervanes; Diluvia). Indeed, these pieces are closely related to the aforementioned albums. However, each track from within it could freely be an A-side or single. Lush guitar chords are mixed up with sublime glockenspiel magic and synthesized sounds and effects. By kindred souls there can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Arcade Fire, Electrelane, Sufjan Stevens, The Antlers.

Dawktah - Imaginary Math (2012)

9.0

/Leftfield, Experimental indie, Electronic pop, Sampledelic, Sound collage, Alternative, Psychedelia/

Comment: Dawktah is a NY-based experimental/leftfield artist who exploits the samples of other musicians. Indeed, his 3-track issue is filled with sampledelic collages, uplifting electronic propulsions and some repetition-loaded guitar chords and effects. It is his sophomore album after Sacristy Arcade.

Rangers - Homemade Cassette Collages III (2009)

9.6

/Bedroom pop, Lo-fi, DIY, Psychedelia, New Weird America, Psych-rock, Avant-pop, Experimental pop/

Comment: Rangers is the project of Joe Knight from Dallas, Texas, USA whose third hometape collage is a mesmeric jam of timeless psychedelic synth rhythms and hiss-buried second hand guitars which used to be processed through filters and long analogue sonic tubes, however, sounding like a humanoid act of being billion miles away from me and you. In true, it rings like a spaced-out brother of Ariel Pink, and John Maus or one of those demented groups having been part of Bob Chaos. On the other side, on the strength of motorik propulsions there can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Neu!, and The Silver Apples. In addition to it, I recommend to listen to his earlier works either. Amazing dude indeed.

Nambavan - Modnay Discoteka (2011)

8.0

/Electronic pop, Electro pop, Alternative, Dance pop/

Comment: it might be this album of 10 tracks is recorded with irony regarding bitch cult in Western countries on a conceptual plane. Indeed, all these Russian-sung lyrics are about f.cking, f.cking, and f.cking, about c.cks reaching to the knees etc, however, being amply dispensed with human dignity. The counterpoint to these autotune-loaded obscene lyrics are dashing, sleek electro pop propulsions. As you have already figured out it is not recommended to play these tracks at parties.

Abfahrt Hinwil - Links Berge Rechts Seen (2002)

9.4

/Experimental electronica, Electro pop, Minimal techno, Chill out, Ambient techno, Soundscapes, IDM, Synth pop, Ambient/

Comment: this 13-track album can be considered one of those distinguished IDM/electronica/techno albums coming out from the 00s. Otherwise it can be viewed as an example of futuristic synth pop drifting between serene and gloomy moods. In the meantime, however, the German duo of Chris Cunningham (aka Point 7), and Martin Haidinger (aka Gimmik) provides profound contemplations of ambient textures, suggestive sequencer-ridden electro pop and robot-driven patterns. On the strength of it there can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Autechre, Dopplereffekt and many other artists. Highly convincing indeed.

Kplecraft - L012 (2011)

Comment: It is a luscious bunch of chipbreaks and moody motives accentuated by overdriving noises and sonic effects. More concretely, there are some tracks which do showcase intriguing blends of free jazz-esque envelopes and sawtooth-alike rhythm shapes.

  • 8-bit
  • Chipbreak
  • Chiptune

  • Electronic pop

Sad Souls - Form in the Fog Beside (2013)

Comment: Sad Souls is a prolific musical project from Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA whose 5-piece issue consists of resonating borealic soundscapes mixing it up with silence-near moments. Stylistically there can be perceived a sublime drift between post-rock ambition and ambient textures. Indeed, there are up sad and lonely souls.

The New Mystikal Troubadours - Jungle Love Revisited (2012)

Comment: TNMT is a duo (Dave Gibson & Matt Perzinski) from Baltimore, Maryland, USA whose 9-track issue is composed equally of shoegaze and psych-rock tendencies, however, being buried slightly in ethereal vein. Of 9 songs from within the whole there is a handful of tracks which can be considered just superb ones. For instance, listen to Like Nothing Else (which sounds like nothing else indeed). In a word, it may be their best accomplishment so far.
  • Psych-rock
  • Alternative rock
  • Drone rock
  • Shoegaze
  • Space rock
  • Neo-psychedelia
  • Experimental rock

Bing Satellites - The Dream (2013)

Lastfm

Comment: this handful of tracks is a huge effort by the Manchester one-man-project project full of flickering spherical sounds, wobbly spaced-out danceable and krautrock/Kosmische Musik/trance rock oscillations, having its genuine direction and inner strength to permeate everywhere. There can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Tangerine Dream, Spacemen 3, Locust, Autocreation, 90s acid house/techno culture. However, it can be said it is a new direction in Brin Coleman`s music.
