Marco Manzella e Antonella Scalia (2013)
9.5
/Post-rock, Symphonic rock, Experimental rock, Ambient rock, Instrumental, Classical/
Comment: this batch of 7 compositions is a mindblowing one composed of the elements of orchestrated classical terrains, post-rock-esque carcasses, and ambient (rock) jitters. Inspite of heady structures the release is counterbalanced with a torrent of senses and enough mood turns pouring out of any slots (sometimes reminding even of Penguin Cafe Orchestra in its uncompromising pursuit for beauty). Behind this combo are Marco Manzella (electric guitar), and Antonella Scalia (classical violin) who started off their collaboration and thereby the combo in 2012. However, they are assisted by Simone Alvich (pianoforte), and Emanuela Sala (voice in Oltre) at times. Very special post-rock collective.
Interlard - Meanwhile (2012)
9.3
/Noise rock, Black metal, Trance rock, Chamber rock, Industrial rock, Avant-metal, Crust punk, No Wave, Anti-rock, Experimental metal, Hardcore, Avant-rock/
Comment: Interlard is a project from Birmingham, UK taking into its fusion heavy, extreme and nihilistic elements of rock, metal, punk and industrial/electronic undercurrents. I can remember the first time for the collective at the end of 00s. This handful of tracks are spreaded out over 36 minutes filled with dirty, resonating bass lines, loose drum blows, some hysterical "singing", howling effects, however, resulting in highly demented, punchy rabidity of the repetition-heavy structures. Emotionally it is ecstatic and hypnotic. On the other side, this music can be interpreted as a sophisticated, intellectual version of grindcore or avant black (metal). However, you should be warned not to be played it for your dear children. In a nutshell, fascinating outsiders by any means.

Rat Faced Boy - Lonesome Road (2012)
9.2
/IDM, Electro pop, Experimental electronica, Acid, Poptronica, Alternative dance/
Comment: Rat Faced Boy is the nome de plume for the mancunian Mike Walters who is being also known as Acidburp. However, this handful of pieces used to stylistically extend over different kinds of electronica, more concretely, from cartoonish IDM-esque rhythmic mazes and slightly growling electro drones to more careless, chirpy electronic pop and acidic glosstronica. Rivet City and elegantly psychedelic eponymous track are just superb ones.
Abacom System feat. Qumram - Home (2012)
9.2
/Electronic pop, Experimental electronica, Ambient techno, Trance pop, Electro pop/
Comment: these 7 instrumental tracks spreaded out over 29 minutes are driven by tickling bass sequences having either its divergent variegations or providing the base for more ethereal layers above it. Rome, Italy-based resident Stefano Mascaro`s collaboration with Qumram sounds somewhere in between techno, electro/and trance and electronic pop and some infiltrations on the base of it, however, full of dynamics, energy and full-fledged bounces.
Vinyl Williams - Naked Sanctuary (2010)
9.7
/Shoegaze, Space rock, Avant-rock, Psychedelia, Ambient, Experimental rock, Dream pop/
Comment: undoubtedly Los Angeles resident Vinyl Williams` album Lemniscate was one of the most fabulous pop examples in 2012. The world famous film composer John Williams` grandson combined sultry indie/shoegaze templates with electronic beats wrapped up in purple, stroboscope-induced light shafts. However, a predecessor of it, Naked Sanctuary, was a more orthodox issue in a guitar-driven sense. On the other side, this handful of pieces was undoubtedly a synthetic release, filled with spaced-out vocal hum and dazzling guitar noises which in turn are composed of overdriving chords and graceful key changes. In general, it is a seamless drift between knee-deep (neo)psychedelic propulsions and majestic, horizon-catched guitar pop. However, instrumental track Spiral Galaxy could be considered the exception on it with regard to clear-cut ambient developments with hints at some electro-acoustic clicks and cuts. You can be sure Vinyl Williams is still in motion.
Adam Balbo - The Jester (2012)
8.9
/Singer-songwriter, Alt-folk, Folk indie, Punk folk/
Comment: Adam Balbo is a singer-songwriter from Indiana, USA whose recent, short-running album (less than a half hour in total) used to entice the listener with an entertaining set of 9 folk (and punk-influenced?)-tinged ditties. Indeed, it is a half hour of burbly key and tempo changes, cymbals-backed washes and Balbo`s jaunty vocal sprawling carelessly over all of it. And there is a permanent rush for catchy harmonies and melodies throughout the course. On the other side, Do What You Do is a tad bit yearning composition which hooked me the most. By the way, if to follow Bandcamp-based logic The Jester is Balbo`s 10th album (the first album Nothing In Particular harks back to the year of 2001). In a word, he can be considered an expert singer-songwriter who does have his own individuality and touch.

So I`m An Islander - Woodwork (2012)
9.1
/New Weird Denmark, Chamber folk, Folk indie, Experimental folk, Weird folk, Indie folk, Dream folk, Modern classical, Mood music, Neoclassical/
Comment: this one-man-project hails from Aarhus, Denmark being the nom de plume for Søren Nissen Jørgensen, who originally comes out of the small town of Augustenborg located on the island of Als, Denmark. A more curious fact is that Jørgensen`s some song titles are written in Southern Jutlandic, a dialect of Danish. Jørgensen`s debut album consists of 14 pieces which will ultimately be ended up at 51.50. Consequently it does mean there should be enough room to progress and extend through ghostly but thoughtful piano chords and either sparkly indie folk or halcyon orchestrations gliding across blissed-out,
gravitation-free meadows to slightly luminous points far away. More generally, the album can be considered an example of organic drift between chamber and dream (boreal) folk tendencies, (modern) classical templates and neoclassical ripples. Frequently his audible (and imaginable) aesthetics reminds of Oskar Hallbert, an eremite living in the woods of Sweden. The album contains an array of teasers. In a word, Jørgensen is a country boy being faithful yet slightly modifying and interpreting his roots.
Delaykliniken - Young (2012)
8.8
/New Wave, Synth pop, Electronic pop, Poptronica, Alternative, Dark pop/
Comment: this batch of 4 tracks is produced by the Swedish trio Delaykliniken comprising Johan Svenson (vocals, music), Mikael Fyrek (music), and Max Sokoleski (music). Their sound is heavily steeped in the syntheticness of the 80s (New Wave, synth pop, New Romanticism) and David Sylvian-esque tortured and gloomy reverie mixed vocal lines by Svensson. It might be a track , Failed, used to show up a more contemporary club dance-centered progression. Retrodelic? Indeed.

Aboombong - Anaphora (2012)
10.0
/Ambient, Spoken word, Minimalism, Avant-garde, Soundscapes, Experimentalism, Drone, Epic/
Comment: JC Thorne`s music is being highly appreciated at Recent music Heroes, and any release of him used to be a big event. For instance, the issues of him, Amnemonic, and Asynchronic are undoubtedly top notches of the 10s. He is an artist whose music is problematic to classify, though, the prefix "post" is adequate. Post-ambient? Post-post-rock? Post-industrial? But it is not problem on its own, of course. However, Anaphora consists of one track (having length of a hour in total) starting off with the storytelling of an old man backed up by solemn cathedral drones, slightly galloping pulsations which later will be "interfered" with metallic clatter, vague noises, and mechanical glockenspiel chords (at least it could be interpreted in that way). It seems to be the state of rest rather than music. There may drawn some parallels upon the likes of Tim Hecker, GY!BE, Loscil, Pan American, but Thorne`s soundscape is yet truly idiosyncratic and original on its own. It is formidable and majestic through its otherworldly soundscapes, and profound ideas thereby becoming part of your minds and thoughts. Like music digged out from Plato, or Heraclitus`s ideas.
Miquel Parera Jaques - nxVacuity002 for Computer and Pipe Organ (2012)
9.0
/Abstract electronica, Conceptual, Experimental electronica, Experimentalism, Avant- garde, Drone, Minimalism, Sound-art/
Comment: similarly to most instrument-based electronic music concepts the Catalan musician Jaques` 4-track set propels minimally, i.e consisting of rigid, static signal-alike frequencies and austere drones which in turn are variegated either rough bass-induced oscillations or vibrato effects at times. Furthermore, by talking of the use of a church organ it must be thought in an indirect sense. In general, the album run on in an abstract yet intriguing way. Indeed, less is more - it may narrate and be more confident than a representative of flamboyant pop music.

Jared Fairfield/Afraid - EMF (2012)
8.8
/Acid pop, New Age, Singer-songwriter, Psychedelic electronica, Electronic pop, Alternative, Alternative dance/
Comment: this batch of 11 tracks is a peculiar whole with very strong regard to predominating warped, electro-injected vocal yearning, New Age-induced sanctity, and synthesized dance bubbles. More concretely, if to listen to these elements separately there might be results quite conventional but altogether all these details used to result in heavy acidic queerness. Yet, there are represented more fluent outputs either - for instance, Tearing the Tongue (Afraid) is a cute, suggestive pop ditty. In a nutshell, Jared Fairfield can be considered a chemical singer-songwriter upon issuing this reminding a little bit of Tinyfolk`s Sic Semper Equis. Might it be the album do feature robots in charge of vocal delivery? However, this time he obviously makes music having robots in mind. But do not afraid of it.
Uncomfortable Cigarettes - The Playroom (2012)
9.3
/Grunge, Alternative rock, Raga, Chamber rock, Symphonic rock, Epic/
Comment: Uncomfortable Cigarettes is a quartet from Italy whose 6-track album is a spectacular blend of rock and classical music, i.e mixing up grungy guitar aesthetics and grinding vocal mannerism with picturesque, epic cello developments above it. Of course, because of nostalgic keys and moods there can be drawn parallels upon the unplugged performance by Nirvana for MTV on November 18, 1993 in New York. Furthermore, the combo`s more baroque-soaked moments resemble to doleful Penguin Cafe Orchestra (in an odd way). The last track Chicken Drumstick showcases a successful experiments with drone and raga-tinged music. In conclusion, the result is solid and majestic, however, not being a bombastic one in pejorative sense of the word at all.

The Hirundu - The Colour Of Pamanganates (2012)
9.5
/Alternative, Anti-rock, DIY, Art rock, Ambient, Electronic pop, Brass pop, Experimental electronica, Leftfield, Experimental rock, Avant-rock, Experimental rock, No Wave/
Comment: undoubtedly Johnny Crewdson is one of those unsung geniuses whose loads of issues (with or without comrades) are up to be discovered in the future. Having been active since 1987 he has been demonstrating an infernal drift between off-kilter electronica/sound art/alternative dance and uncompromising indie/lo-fi/post-punk/No Wave aesthetics, between knee-deep avant-garde and quirky pop music. This time his music seems to be more string and natural drums centered, though, those sparkling "guitar pop" tracks are more or less bent and warped. Listen to slight funk track Casual Paging, and light-hearted orchestration Planet Of The Lathes, and lofty violin hook based Itll All Work Out In Poundland, and delightful vocoder-induced Feed The Ducks, To The Swans, and and ebullient brass pop beauty Near The Photographic Island you will get the idea of my aforementioned words. Moreover, imagine The Beta Band meets Arthur Russell meets Super Furry Animals meets David Bowie meets The Nits, for instance. But not only, of course. In the first place - it is The Hirundu in Crewdson`s idiosyncrasy. Very inspiring compositions by any means.
Hox Vox - The Carnival of Animals (2012)
9.3
/Avant-prog, Conceptual, RIO, Experimental electronica, Avant-rock, Progressive, Experimental rock, Weird pop/
Comment: this batch of 14 short-running tracks used to run in the wake of theatrical prog rock developments and some free jazz-tinged elements, however, containing lots of "acute" way-out edges and refreshing forays. And many excesses I have always loved by the Venice musician Gianluca Missero aka Hox Vox. At times it chimes slightly in an infantile way, though, mostly showing up steady constitution and suggestive harmonies. Emotionally the release is intense and exuberant, however, giving no possibility to relax or rest. In a word, it is one of the best outputs produced ever by Missero.
12/30/2012
Shattered Darlings & Liquid Kisses - These Days (2012)
8.8
/Shoegaze, Psychedelic rock, Alternative pop/rock, Dream pop/
Comment: it is the second single hailing from the group`s sophomore album You Know Me Well. More detailedly, some lingering psychedelic loops are interlaced with panoramic shoegaze-tinged expansions throughout the course of 202 seconds. However, the more you listen to it the more impressive it seems to be finally. So please give it a (repetitive) try.
Galaktlan - Rock Hotel (2012)
8.8
/Electronica, Conceptual, Covers, Electronic pop, Downtempo, Poptronica/
Comment: it is a quite surprising delivery because electronic artist Taavi Laatsit aka Galaktlan (also known as Von Suck, and a member of Uni, Kismabande, and Kulgurid) has managed to interpret Estonian pop/rock juggernaut Rock Hotel`s tracks in its own way. However, it`s done now resulting in a glossy synthesized sheen and laid back, downtempo propulsions. In a word, the more you listen to it the more it will get opened up for you while bringing out value on its own. Pro.
The Velocity Raptors - I, Donna (2012)
9.3
/Math rock, Post-rock, Art rock, Progressive rock, Alternative rock/
Comment: this pair of tracks comes out of Manchester, UK created by Sean Eoghan Buckley. He has made idiosyncratic job regarding an extraordinary blend of propelling art rock-ish guitar gears, and intricate progressive/technical/math rock templates. A tiny bit whimsical but steadily poignant instrumental outputs. Seems to be an dinosaur having the brain of the intellectual. In a word, it is a highly perspective one.
Out-Or - Analog Gentleman (2011)
9.2
/Tech-electro, Breaks, Robot pop, Jungle, Tech-house, Electro pop, Acid electro, Dub house, Club dance, Leftfield, Alternative/
Comment: Marko Sula aka Ataka aka Out-Or was being one of those producers/musicians with Lobsand Dorje, Hüpnosaurus, Von Suck, Flexus, Lu:k, Treee, Una Bomba who had been defining the Estonian underground electronica/dance music scene throughout the 90s. Although the time has passed by mercilessly his 11-track issue still consists of acid/cosmic electro and glossy robot-induced leftfield electronica propulsions, however, sometimes providing a spot on rattling jungle rhythms and laid back tech-house and dub house vibrations. Solid work.

Thuoom - Through This Dark Rain (2012)
9.4
/Abstract electronica, Sound-art, Organic electronica, Space rock, Psycho-acoustic, Experimental rock, Musique concrète, Psych-rock, Forest folk, Glitchtronica, Post-psychedelic electronica, New Weird Finland, Avant-electronica, Microtonal, Glitch ambient, Minimal, Experimentalism/
Comment: Tuomo aka Thuoom, a Finnish artist is back with the third full-length output which may be the most obscure issue of him so far. He exploits more and less conventional instruments and sonic sources like bottles, clocks, electric guitar, field recordings, human voice, metal jar, music box, sine waves, speaker feedback. Sounds intriguing, isn`t? The result is evocative due to sundry experiments with some disparate magnitudes of the soundscape, vowel effects, repetition-heavy (rhythm) structures, however, which are either wrapped up in lethargic, or ghostly vapor. Moreover, some tracks used to curve downwards as more obsessive, noisy and psyched-out than others (for instance, Underf). On the other side, there are up some places ready for more bright, redemptive developments (Novembrane, Drunken Lullaby). However, there is the remarkable exception, Indigo St, which relies on hirsute but spaced-out guitar strums therefore getting closer to psych-rock/space rock realms rather than dwelling in compulsive electronic courtyards. The ending part of it is especially breathtaking. You can be sure I am waiting for Tuomos`s proper rock album in future. The last track Ff beseems to the Finnish forest folk tradition more clearly than the rest bunch of pieces or parts of them. Similarly to his previous issues this 9-track album is released on his own Textural Healing imprint. By the way, two weeks ago Tuomo issued an enormous set of 35 tracks called reCycle.
Thuoom deserves to be signed up by some eminent Finnish record label (for instance, Fonal Records, or Wooden Sherpa) already.
Jan Grünfeld - A Trace (2012)
9.2
/Ambient folk, Folkgaze, Dream folk, Organic electronica, Ambient, Indie folk, Musique concrète, Folk indie/
Comment: there are up 13 compositions dragged out for 47 minutes. More profoundly, despite of being instrumentally minimal the issue is highly picturesque due to gliding guitar chords, blissed-out strums, suggestive vowel expansions, and environmental sound processing thereby resulting in wondrous tonality and plenty of semitones and fulltones. Emotionally it is a refreshing, bucolic listening time with regard to staggered murky and cloudless moods. Now and then Grünfeld is accompanied by unknown female singing therefore
further expanding his world of sounds. There may be drawn some parallels upon Imandra Lake`s pristine (ambient) folk endeavours and Coen Oscar Polack`s field recording snippets recorded in India, for instance. In a nutshell, this rich textured album can be considered a soundtrack of your saturday morning. At random today is saturday. And with sunshine.
12/28/2012
Dronabidoll - Live Animal Feed (2012)
9.2
/Experimental indie, Electro punk, Sampledelic, Breakcore, Psychedelic electronica, Electronic pop, Alternative dance, Electro rock, Alternative/
Comment: Marcel Pichon aka Salon Blodsinn aka Dronabidoll is an exciting, whimsical artist from Sankt Peterburg, Russia whose 6-track publication is filled with lots of forays and hidden textures (because of being so intense, psychedelic and curious by its nature). At times the combo`s music is concentrated in guitar-driven, punk-ish propulsions, sometimes it provides more breaks-induced appearances, at times it is evenly blended with the abovementioned elements). By kindred souls there can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Messer Chups, and Messer Für Frau Müller, a world famous authority from the same city. The issue is released on Running Rabbit (there is another artist, Headless Doll Whores (which is another project by Salon Blodsinn), whose music bases on collages of jazz works by Soviet composers).
SaReGaMa - Spirit of Kalimba (2011)
8.8
/DIY, World music, Musique concrète, Conceptual, Minimal, New Age, Ethnic music/
Comment: this album of 4 compositions represents kalimba music played in an organic way (i.e embellished with the whiffs of concrete music) and an eclectic, ethnic way (mixed up with New Age-esque flutes and didgeridoo-based grouse and din). Behind the project hides himself Serge who is thoroughly keen on Indian music and who has been building instruments to produce music. There is another EP entitled as Solos for Kalimba at Jamendo.
12/27/2012
Yutaka Hirasaka - Librecord (2012)
8.9
/Indie folk, Cover, Folk indie, Folktronica, Singer-songwriter/
Comment: this batch of predominantly short-running 6 notches (or just snippets) does base mostly on moody acoustic guitar arpeggios which are impregnated with slight concrete sounds, swinging, melodium whiffs, however, which may be considered an alternative version of Penguin Cafe Orchestra at times. On the other side, it used to offer up flirt with silence and still life in a delicate way. By the way, there is a cover version of Jane Turzy`s vintage Good Morning Mister Echo (the only composition involving Hirasaka`s vocal). Definitely beatific.
Branches - Ninguém É Como Tu - Reworks (2012)
9.6
/Experimental indie, Post-psychedelic electronica, Alternative, Experimental electronica, Conceptual, Avant-pop/
Comment: this handful of pieces is reworked by different musicians and friends of Branches who is a Portugese musician. More concretely, most of the album`s power is concentrated in (post-) psychedelic propulsions through the realm of minimalist developments relied on elliptical loops of spaced-out synths, droning guitars or alternatively, on thudding rhythm sequences. Magnificent configurations which are full fledged right now
12/26/2012
Jari Pitkänen - Sirin (2012)
9.4
/Ambient, Soundscapes, Ambient drone, Avant-industrial, Dark ambient, Abstract/
Comment: Jari Pitkänen`s 2-track issue used to exhibit the strong interaction between glacial ambient and billowy drone chords filled in with more or less caustic, industrial-tinged oscillations and more abstract susurruses. In a word, the result is expressive and convincing, however, searching for balance between explorative and affective elements. There can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Blues for spacegirl, Ars Sonor & Meklabor, Caustic Reverie, slept., Kirill Platonkin.
Cocolixe - Doméstico EP (2012)
9.3
/Electronic pop, Dub, Krautrock, Funk, Alternative, Poptronica, Alternative dance, Glo-fi, Indie dance/
Comment: the Uruguayian artist Fabián D'alesio aka Cocolixe`s brand new one is a mesmeric drift between indie/krautrock/chillwave and electronic rhythmic shuffles. Indeed, imagine Neu! meets modern Neu! (Ladytron, Fujiya & Miyagi, Stereolab, for instance) driven by obsessive propulsions and deliberate static elements abovestairs. On the other side, the ending track Swing Low gives a damn for sliced funk gears and acidic dub vibes. In conclusion, similarly to Cocolixe`s previous issues this one is graceful and charming full of serotonine-induced turns and suggestive harmonies.
12/23/2012
Esoteric Sob - Nostalgia (2012)
9.3
/Modern classical, IDM, Downtempo, Electronic pop, Neoclassical, Chilltronica, Mood music/
Comment: Esoteric Sob is the nom de plume of John Trifonopoulos, an electronic music artist from Greece. His 9-piece issue is an evocative blend of doleful chilltronic/downtempo progressions, bleak glitch-y dark ambient and neoclassical soundscapes, ethereal modern classical domains, silenful IDM-esque beats. Indeed, the whole sounds like a muffled dirge for somewhat or someone lost or buried recently, respectively. However, all these aforementioned sonic elements used to depict realms and sections inside the human being`s soul and mind. The central track is Everyday Stories featuring Karra Russell in charge of vocal delivery. Very good.
Reality Asylum - Was Tat Ich EP (2005)
9.6
/Alternative rock, Post-punk, No Wave, Avant-punk, Art punk/
Comment: this set of 3 pieces is undoubtedly an effort representing post-punk music in a very solid way. Monotonously stomping drum machine-based beats have been managed in a way to be set below gliding or more tempered guitar swipes and spoken word snippets, however, embellished with stereo effects and suggestive melodies at times. Indeed, it harks back to krautrock aesthetics. As we used to know very well Julian Cope who has been championing krautrock music was also a post-punker as a member of Teardrop Explodes once. In a word, it is the kind of punk for what I am ready to give a damn.
12/22/2012
Time Hitler and the Assholes From Space - The Lost in Time Recordings (2012)
8.7
/Psychedelic rock, Alternative rock, Drone folk, Indie rock, Space folk/
Comment: Doug Rosenberg, Ryan Jones, and Chris Parsons (from Media, Pennsylvania, USA) used to make music which obviously is influenced by an early David Bowie (retrodelic the Spaceman), and by the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Spiritualized due to its lush, sophisticated psychedelic resonances and slightly hazy strips. Chris Parsons plays saxophone instead of keyboards providing intriguing droning undercurrents between strumming guitar layers and Rosenberg`s sprawling vocal mannerism. In addition to music, the coverprint is impressive.
AoK Suicide Forest - AoK Suicide Forest (2010)
9.2
/Stoner rock, Post-metal, Hard rock, Sludge rock/
Comment: AoK Suicide Forest is the trio of Leif Sherman Curtis, David Joy, and Michael Anderson who used to blend the elements of stoner rock, hardrock, and sludge into a formidable, 6-track whole. More concretely, bold, pitch-shifting guitar riffs by Sherman Curtis are assisted by massive, punching drum sequences of Anderson and intense bass thudding of Joy. Impressive.
12/21/2012
Perry Ferya Band - Live on Venus (2012)
9.4
/Krautrock, Space rock, Psychedelic rock, Avant-rock, Improvised music, Psych-rock, Experimental rock, Live session/
Comment: of course, it is not the first time by a seminal avant-garde records, Clinical Archives, to issue dizzy krautrock-ish and hazy space rock propulsions under its imprint. You can remember for such amazing acts as Children Of Ishizuke Tree, Joxfield ProjeX, Melting Clouds, Yoko Absorbing, Magical Unicellular Music, Skala Collective (a marginal project of SC`s musicians). This 39-minute set is a session at a stage involving different sections and plays of variegated intensities full of glacial synths, sultry guitars, reshuffled drums thereby conjuring up psychedelic dust strips and stripes. Stunning.
Totokoko Christmas Compilation 3 (2012)
9.1
/Indie pop, Psychedelic pop, Singer-songwriter, Indie folk, Baroque pop, Folk indie, Cowbell indie, Alternative pop, Conceptual, Dream pop, Electronic pop/
Comment: it is undoubtedly a nice tradition of the Japanese label Totokoko to provide the Christmas compilation at the beginning of December annually. This batch of 16 tracks used to extend from dusty keyboard passages and chiming guitar layers to picturesque dream pop/shoegazing/cowbell indie and glockenspiel-heavy folk progressions and fluent or thoughful piano-centered and more electronica-tinged ditties. There are up such artists as He Died While Hunting, American Green, Michikusa, Mitsuyoshi Matsuda, Zmi, Dot Tape Dot, Netherland Dwarf, Kaziko Uchida, Masato Abe, M.e, Popolo, Shingo Makino, Asa, Sonicbrat, Conte. The Christmas season will have been on a full swing.
12/18/2012
Uni - Kosmikud II (2007)
9.5
/Electronic pop, Glo-fi, Alternative, Cosmic electronica, Indietronica, Experimental electronica, Chilltronica, Easy listening/
Comment: Uni (or "Dream","Sleep" in translation) was an Estonian duo comprising such musicians and producers as Taavi Laatsit (Von Suck, Galaktlan, Galaktlan Group), and Henrik Luuk (Popidiot). I can remember for this issue firstly issued in tape format and packaged in foil in the end of 90s hanging somewhere in a shop in Tartu (and my friend bought it). This 11-track issue does include mostly laidback, outer space-related (or "ulme" in Estonian the word which is not translatable, though) and more or less ominous blissed-out electronic propulsions, however, having sometimes hints at robot pop (those vocal warped experiments), Soviet Sputnik electronica and sci-fi films and melodica-tinged endeavours. It might be thought the last track Kohvipaus reveals more the duo`s indie influences. It is a highly nostalgic and classic issue regarding the tendencies of the Estonian electronic scene. And even in the recent context it sound previously in a superb, affluent way.
Beta Dog - Fake Hero (2012)
8.8
/EBM, Industrial rock, Dark pop, Trance, Electro-rock, Crossover, Techno rock, Electronic pop, Synth rock/
Comment: this batch of 11 tracks is the debut album by Beta Dog, a Czech project full of gloomy synth layers, rigid machine-driven rhythms and a little bit tortured, hacking vocal appearances and obscure themes sometimes mixed up with spoken word and theatrical samples and robot-esque vocoder filters. Stylistically it veers away the elements of rock, industrial, electro(nica), trance and synth pop.
