Comment: 12 years ago there was panic due to economic depression, there was panic pertaining to swine flu. In a word nothing has changed for better or worse if to compare it to the recent time. What could be predicted for a near future? It might be the world, our beautiful planet called Earth unveils its primal and more mystical and envious side with the aid of its primordial beings like bacteria, reptiles and trees being accompanied by destructive weather conditions to severely punish relatively juvenile yet arrogant species, first of all, a primate called the human being. We will see the superior frightening wisdom of them. They cannot stand for a stupid ape anymore.
Maybe all is triggered because of the absence of Crimson Muddle's music which had produced off-kilter artsy punk inspired chamber and classical music by showing the human being's ability to step aside from inferior clichés and moronic patheticness sometimes. All seems to be sustained all seems to be fucking dying, there is no ebbs and tides anymore – such frenetic juggernauts and mad idealists as Mark E. Smith, and Jared C. Balogh are also gone forever. Could you imagine a cover of Joy Division being brought forth by a convulsive art group in the vein of a mutant Kronos Quartet? Or a Vaudeville-soaked playing the fool on the base of catabolic piano arrangements and string hooks? Or hysterical operatic singing accompanied by a needle-sharp drum machine cadence and a layer of drunken cellos atop? Metabolism reversible? Here it is as a part of the library of Zorch Factory Records.

  • Abstract

  • Improvised music
  • Non-music

Comment: it is a soundtrack based on the running of nimble crackles and hollow rattling, it is a tribute to sonic elements which usually are removed from a track and an issue as sonic errors. It might be one can hear such sound if the head of her tape recorder is severely screamed or loosely bound to the tape player. Maybe it is the way this 8-track outing is recorded in fact. I tagged it as improvised music although I am not sure is it either improvised or is it music at all. Maybe it is an indecipherable conversation between the trees and plants or aliens giving no heck for the human beings about their future to be foreseen. These aliens can freely be singular artificial intelligence devices who play out their intruding plans on the rough sounds. The outing is a part of the discography of 8 ravens.

    Pogohm ‎– Raptor Jesus (2012)

    • Electronic music
    • Alternative dance
    • Lo-fi
    • DIY
    • Eurobeat
    • Vaporwave
    • Breaks
    • Trance

Comment: behind Pogohm is a French musician Arnaud Barbe who is better known and being more prolific behind a nom de plume, Pollux. He leads also an imprint, Sirona-Records, and the recent 5-notch outing is also a part of it. If someone asks for the point of Pogohm and difference between the two aliases then the first thread one can hear coming out of Raptor Jesus is an appealing VHS quality embracing all the sound. A second characteristic is a cheesy rhythmic sound being something between Eurobeat, and German trance. Given that Arnaud Barbe's profound experiments with ambient and electronic music as Pollux one may see it as a Barbe's guilty pleasure or seedy self-indulgence, however, despite its simplistic rhythms it chimes in an alien way coming close to Vaporwave sound. In a word, it is an enjoyable experience full of bittersweet nostalgia and passed times. Nice shit making your day.

    • Experimentalism
    • Musique concrète

Comment: this bunch of 12 tracks is something which makes you feel ennobling and purgative. For me as a listener this would be an ideal pop case in an ideal world. It is uncompromising and incisive by channelizing familiar and daring where soaring faint harmonies and semi-melodies and exquisite sonic manipulations are seamlessly intertwined with one another. As a punching sonic fist which includes so many layers to be grasped for it needs many listening times in any cases. In spite of it there remains something mysterious ultimately. From subtle piano-induced contemporary classical progressions and broad ambient plateaus and subliminal folktronic and post-rock soars to field recording drenched soundscapes and abstract hisses and daring static. The issue is out of the discography of Moving Furniture Records.

    Moki Mcfly – Silom (2018)

    • Psychedelic
    • Lo-fi
    • DIY
    • Mood music
    • Easy listening
    • World fusion

Comment: this 14-notch release being a part of the discography of blocSonic Records is a mesh of instrumental hip-hop rhythms and cinematic orchestrated beats. There are represented other sort of cadences as well, at Tuk Tuk Dub one can hear the churning of surf guitars; at Chang's a psychedelic organ gear and a weak Far East flavour comes to the surface. Aesthetically it is imbued with lo-fi and DIY attitude. Furthermore, in many tracks an exquisite ethnic music touch is added to the mix. All in all, a listener can hear a blissful mix of the aforementioned elements and a wondrous vibe running throughout the whole course. Great.

    • Avant-pop
    • Experimental pop
    • Progressive

Comment: the members of The Hirundu got an inkling to embark on recording their own music by watching a TV show with the appearance of Happy Mondays there. It did happen sometime at the end of the 80s when soaring guitar sound was mingled with acid house inspired dance-appealed beats. I guess Johnny Crewdson and company from Blackpool did not get interested in that not because it was hip but it did have a strong psychedelic groove, possible DIY attitude and a solid amount of humour within the backbone. The things would have developed in the way the number of albums by The Hirundu today can already be compared to The Fall, another big favourite of theirs. From initial strong psychedelic groove and dadaist take on radiophonic art and frantic lo-fi pop and rock to be progressing into an idiosyncratic electronic experimental slot. However, by exploring the discography of the combo one can figure out unpredictable twitches between the aforementioned stylistic developments. Additionally, The Hirundu made a lot of modern lo-fi/DIY things to happen approximately a decade before Ariel Pink and a new wave of home recording artists did.
By listening to this 15-notch album and from the very first psychedelic soporific chords one can admit the proper way to set up new directions in music is to explore the past because music like everything around is an experiential and synthetic field for sure. More profoundly, it is Johnny Crewdson's retrodelic act one can hear influences coming out from Primal Scream's Screamadelica (A Nuttist) and sublime baggy rhythms by searching for psychedelic cloudless quietude and to be succumbed to halcyon gravity-free grasp. Indeed, at times I was even struck by a heretical thought Johnny Crewdson tries to retreat deliberately from the previous efforts with regard to either some more silent moments or progressive examples (Seven Feffers) within it. However, there is no heresy in the artist's thinking, Tantalus is a knowing realisation of his frightening yet mesmerizing ideas. For instance, the album is ended up by Merengue, a superb melodic artsy pop approach where you can feel the ambition, dynamics, humor and sensibility. The album is top notch by any means especially living at a time when (mainstream) music is being fucked-up due to stupid exploitation of mechanical voice machines. At a time of talentless and cowardly artists.

Sean Nicholas Savage – Screamo (2018)

    • Singer-songwriter
    • Alternative pop
    • Soul
    • DIY
    • Indie soul
    • Sophisti-pop
    • Synth-pop
    • Cinematic

Comment: screamo, indeed, but it is not screamo as music style at all represented within the course of 12 tracks. Maybe it is a screamo of desperation in soul being induced by urge for love and intense dislocated longing. It may be because the Canadian troubadour continues stubbornly walking the same path he has done so far. And that's good because I could not imagine him by getting no hold of DIY-tinged soul being saturated with honest feel and sheer depth. I can remember him for performing at a small indie festival in a small town at the beginning of the 10s, the Sun had already set down while he was performing in front of approximately 2500 attendants being barefoot and surrounded by little flying vampires. Yeah, it was an astounding performance, it was the first class entertainment by him.
While he does not use much instruments and magniloquent gizmos to bring a listener the impact for any element represented here is thoroughly accentuated and emotively saturated. It may represent a screamo in his soul but it involves a lighthearted cinematic feel to solace me as a listener. Top tier which as usual as Sean Nicholas Savage used to be is related to an imprint called Arbutus Records.

Comment: rusty shrieks, metallic rattles, amplified industrial hisses, incisive digitalised noises which at times are quite hostile are varied with sublime evocative melodies and vivid rhythmic combinations to an exuberant extent within the concept of a playful music production. This 17-notch issue embraces a whole universe of diverse yet integrated cadences, sonic experiments and frantic visions. It is all about how to domesticate austere bleak sonic bits into a tractable blossoming oasis. More profoundly, it used to rotate about an electro dance with an innumerable amount of dodges and branches into such styles as industrial, noise, and glitchtronica. The overwhelming outing is a part of the discography of Vaatican Records.

Comment: at the time of searching for a teaser track for the blog from the French composer, imprint owner and blogger Nicolas Tourney's brand new one Ram I was inclined sensually to find out just one track called Bluebeard. However, having been listened to the 15-track outing many times in a row I can admit it to be a great one. Indeed, it is about tonality and microscopic sensuality within broadening and narrowing swathes of exquisite sound. Lots of used to happen in reality and a listener's mind or being inseparably intertwined with one another. It is like a wondrous universe with stable arrangement of sonic elements and little changes coming in and moving outside. Wavering quietude is compellingly represented throughout the course there. Less is more on the base of this issue. The release is a part of the discography of Batenim.

Silent Strike x Makunouchi Bento – Winds Veiled In Darkness (2020)

    • Avant-garde
    • Oldie music
    • Hauntology
    • Sampledelic

    • Dark ambient

Comment: this 13-track outing is a collaboration between two Romanian artists one of them is a duo called Makunouchi Bento may be (well-) known to visitors at RMH. Getting inspiration from the invisible and mysterious they have managed to reassemble ghostly shades and hyper-realistic flickers with the assistance of more or less traditional sounds. The heart of the release is a series of wax cylinders recorded by Béla Bartók approximately the century ago, capturing the folk music of Banat, Romania. In fact, either by listening to an example of oldie music or getting an axial sample into a contemporary composition like the compositions of The Caretaker and The Fucked Up Beat have verified so far such sort of music is thoroughly haunting and mysterious to a contemporary human being it may be even more spectral than a deliberately manipulated dark ambient composition used to be. Even if you are listening to the songs of then absolute pop stars like Al Jolson you may feel a shiver coming through your heart and down your body. Similarly something like that one can feel listening to Ghostophonia where the artists have left enough air and space between the oldie samples and more or less warped sonic bits to let microscopic melodies and tiny harmonies appear and accentuate the apex of past times and inevitably the touch of death into one's mind to be come. If it comes to one's mind the more it seems to be amplified through bittersweet remembrance and feeling of immediate passing of time. If to compare this issue to Makunouchi Bento's previous issues (I am very aware of a collaborative tenure by Silent Strike though) Ghostophonia seems to be sonically less layered and more linear, as already mentioned, to get hold of feeling of our temporary residence and finalisation of the inevitable arrangement by Lord (Heaven knows we will be dust as Mozza sang 35-36 years ago at the time of his tenure with the Smiths). Would you like to fight back? You're welcome by following the formula – ars longa, vita brevis. So follow the logic of the artists to become immortal. For the reviewer here it is the first notch from the new decade to be truly worthwhile.

Comment: this batch of 3 tracks which clocks in at a half hour in total is a haunting blend of ominous guitar timbres, slowly changing aural ebbs and tides and atmospheric plateaus which are conjured up with effect-laden guitars and cymbal-induced washes. As equal as the outer impact of the powerful facade the inner aspect has been managed to the same degree due to droning and minimally changing notes and swapping timbres. You can be a witness how a microcosmos and a macrocosmos collapse with one another for to get melt down to a seamless whole. At Grey one can hear a droning organ in the middle of guitars which chimes epic and psychedelic at the same time being initially challenging and ultimately rewarding. There is no chip on the shoulder to be found. The impressive outing is a part of the discography of Silber Records which is a solid port of releasing rock music of experimental/droning/ambient kind.

    • Experimentalism
    • Spoken word
    • Abstract
    • Electronic

    • Micronoise
    • Improvised noise

Comment: Fulmedesh is the long-distance project of Argentina-based Mariela Arzadun (ARP Odyssey, volca bass, guitar, field recordings, poems), and the US-based Keith Helt who runs the imprint pan y rosas discos (guitar, pedals, flute, keyboard, drums, computer, poems) who play an instance of improvised music full of feeling. More profoundly, the soundscape of six compositions is sonically and stylistically angular and spiked with sheer sonic effects, transgressive progressions, fast and frequently unanticipated turns. I did perceive how the music had resonated with sounds coming from the street outside which in fact consists partially of recorded real concrete sounds. In general, all the obligatory elements of experimental/improvised music/noise are represented and something a little bit else additionally here. Mariela Ardazun-played the austere sounds and minimally functional sonic trickery on the vintage Korg ARP Odyssey permeate throughout the course. At Oh yes! It was a different tiger o quién habló de eso antes Anne Boyer reads her poem Not Writing being performed on June 28, 2016 in Zagreb, Croatia. The personal favourite of mine is Forced Landing On The Stomach Of A Turtle which is channelized into a minimally trudging drone doom-laden rock composition being embellished with shards of electronics and stoned intonation. Addtionally to the Keith Helt curated imprint the issue is released in conjunction with Amor Loco.

    Intelec – Giro (2007)

    • Deep techno
    • Electronic music
    • Experimental techno
    • Glitchtronica
    • IDM
    • Ambient techno

Comment: this bunch of 6 tracks is all about profound reveries on hypnotic rhythms which in turn are surrounded by torn sonic effects, delicate glitches and concealed voice manipulations. Despite its strong impact on the rhythmic backbone (indeed, the kick drum predominantly kicks and rumbles around) the Spanish duo does not forget to craftily impose upon emotive synapses with the aid of halcyon synthesizers and lighthearted melodies. This sort of synthesized expressions are characteristic to deep house notches although the recent case is experimental techno by numbers (i.e unpredictable ones). The masterful issue is a bit within the discography of Miga. The very respect of mine.

    STUCKINWAVEFORMS – Seeds (2019)

    • Deep house
    • Club dance
    • Sampledelic
    • Funk
    • Mood music
    • Chilltronica
    • Cinematic

Comment: in fact, these tags say all what will be happening in the next 14 tracks. Lots of purple-tinged electric piano chords and mostly mid-tempo breaks are up there for the turntable to lose its power by resulting in twisted chords and more and less unexpected changes in direction and gear. Hello on the other side is a very cheerful due to a combination of bubblegum-ish funk frequencies. Obviously another (compelling) hit beyond that overwhelming Feelgood. Highly welcome are adept dance-appealed entries into the compartment of electro-house and deep house. It can be admitted these 35 minutes are craftily balanced in mood and formal configuration given that it exceeds the fantasy of an average Flying Lotus' inspired artist. The astounding issue is a part of the discography of Orikami Records. Call it futuristic fusion if you wish, however, it is one of the best albums from the previous year.

Ann Deveria – Domingo Tarde (2009)

    • Musique concrète
    • Abstract
    • Live recording
    • Avant-garde
    • Acousmatic music
    • Microtonal
    • Micronoise

Comment: this is a 2-notch track of unusual choice of music by Ann Deveria under the Spanish experimental imprint Audiotalaia. The beginning part is a 14-minute track consisting of whitish droning imbued with light hisses, accidental electro-acoustic/concrete music episodes a la door opening, walking and other every day's home noises which in fact add a positive, familiar impact upon the track. The pace behind the composition is brought forth by an act of simple pulsating and harmonized phase shifting. One may perceive it as if a dozen channels of electricity was embedded in a huge concave. Despite its apparently pale nature the result does have a deep sensibility.
The second part, however, is a surprise due to decelerated pace based on lone yet atmospheric acoustic guitar plucks and longing dreamy harmonica improvisations as if Route 66 was depicted in a panoramic view meandering in the middle of a secluded, uncivilized landscape as we frequently can see in the movies. It is also the kind of what Sergio Leone would have used in some episodes of his Spaghetti Western movies. Solid by any means.

    Guilty Strangers – Oracle (2012)

    • Post-punk
    • Deathrock
    • Gothic rock
    • Alternative rock
    • Experimental rock
    • Avant-rock
    • Art rock

Comment: this bunch of 10 tracks comes out of the discography of Zorch Factory, now defunct imprint dedicated to post-punk and its a bit darker derivatives like gothic rock and coldwave. The latter one was initially related to French-speaking regions like France and Wallonia. It is not surprising because Zorch Factory Records was a French one. However, not all bands were the aforementioned regions related, like Guilty Strangers hailing from San Antonio, Texas, USA. Yeah, the release is about the gothic yet it is different at most times from the UK-based gothic juggernauts due to deathrock influences thereby resulting in more fast paced and galvanized songs. However, female singing and high registered yearning and cellophane-alike guitars bring in mind Siouxsie and the Banshees unintentionally. At Snake one can partake in slowed-down ragged incantations based on the improvisations of a staccato guitar. In any cases, the second part of the issue embraces more sonic experiments and unusual tempo signatures and song structures. The album includes witty one-liners and dark theme considerations like violence, (ancestral) sin, weird dreams. All in all, it is thoroughly good.

Martin Rach – Doubling Moons (2020)

    • Avant-garde
    • Ambient drone

    • Noise
    • Experimentalism
    • Electronic
    • Improvised music

    • Chamber music
    • Post-classical
    • Improvised noise
    • Ambient

Comment: before I started listening to this 6-notch Moon series I had listened to two previous outings of the Lithuanian experimental musician. And it was a truly arbitrary, highly accidental choice with regard to Martin Rach's enormous collection behind for obsessive lovers in experimental music (also known as Mirth Naarc). First of them was Piano Attic (2016), an intricate mix of modern piano music with a strong inclination toward electro-acoustic music and elaborated noise. A second was Late Autumn Quartets (2016), a fine flow of post-classical/chamber music work with dodges into noisy bursts and more electronics.
Given that the flow being quite similar related to the last mentioned issue Doubling Moons chimes as his first issue in a new decade (but not the sole issue anymore) due to blurred borders between foggy chamber music, slow motion induced droning and flashback filled, crackled ambient like early wondrous Tim Hecker used to do (from Haunt Me Haunt Me Do It Again to Mirages) to amplified, tectonic noise resonances. In a word, it is a bloody great, absolutely accomplished release which on the other side, fortunately, is just a span in the continuing trajectory of the artist. After that let's be ready to immerse into his subsequent issue called Naihtyme. And the previous ones should be shed light upon again.

    • Synth-punk
    • Dance punk
    • Art punk
    • DIY
    • Electroclash
    • Electro-punk
    • Lo-fi

Comment: this 11-track outing is something which straddles on the border of electro and punk being embellished with vintage spoken samples and catchy singing. By listening to the lo-fi production and thorough DIY intention of this Italian-based combo it can be said for instance both Sex Pistols (from the past), and Fischerspooner (from the present time) chime like established combos with regard to it. Additionally, such sort of music resurrects in mind such combos as The Screamers, Digital Leather, Units, Suicide. On the other side, with regard to a permanent acerbic droning and straightforward pace it is close to Silver Apples rather than The Fall. Especially astounding are those a bit hypnotic and a bit venomous progressions on synths being accompanied by howling singing manner and mechanic autistic drums. If you have a wish you can buy their LP being released on Eighteen Records.
