Darcin – Castor Volant (2009)

  • Drone
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimental electronica
  • Space music
  • Minimalism
  • Experimentalism
  • Microtonal
  • Sound art
  • Abstract
  • Ambient drone

Comment: let’s keep reviewing in the vein of the discography of Montrèal, Canada-based No Source/Panospria imprint. Nicolas Dion aka Darcin`s issue is an undoubtedly methodical listening because these three pieces used to unveil throughout 67 minutes. Furthermore, the compositions are quite disparate; especially the second track Bonus Piano is something of a cut-up sort, where silence is varied with very short, wispy sonic bits. Later on, all those bits will be subjected to unsteady wobbling. It would be interesting to know why the artist decided for the sake of this kind of composition. Given that I am just feeling myself fairly curious to know the rationale of such a sort of dividing line, however, the track is fabulous. Castor Volant is the lengthiest composition on it, unveiling its brilliant nature throughout a span of 33 minutes. It is the contemporary kind of drone music being in general produced for small tape imprints with small print-runs oftentimes residing at Bandcamp. Furthermore, it is the contemporary sort of minimalism while listening to this immense piece one can perceive tickling sensations coming out of those incessantly undulating waves, which will be broadening the more the 33-minute course reaches the end. In a word, it is a gentle, in-depth psychedelic experience. Bonus Process could similarly be categorized as drone music though its accents are a little bit different. More profoundly, it is more abstract chiming like the sound of the engine of a space rocket having reached a very remote distance from Earth. Because of that it could be admitted to be a part of ambient drone music/space music. It is similarly captivating and laid-back though its method is set up otherwise. In a nutshell, the outing is a fascinating issue, which even would predict the hype of analogue-based drone music some years before. It is mesmerizing how Nicolas Dion excels at producing and investigating minutiae within the soundscape. Get it now. Yeah.

Koji Maruyama – Comune (2016)

  • Modern classical
  • Minimalism
  • Post-classical
  • Art music
  • Piano music
  • Improvised music

Comment: it happened about one year ago when I reviewed the Japanese musican Koji Maruyama`s issue Isos being released on Totokoko imprint in 2015 where I got acquainted with his exquisite modern classical music. In those days the artist commingled the genre with concrete sounds, however, in general his brand new one is without organic sounds (the only exception is Venice). In spite of it, this 5-notch issue is a wondrous one where Maruyama searches for balance between free flow and more determined compositions. For instance, Venice, and op. 344 are lovely piano music based improvisations, on the other side, Aoi Hasu, which can be considered the central composition due to its length and emphasis is a remarkably more minimalism oriented pace, which is based on vowel bits to be teetered between the stereo channels and suggestive iterations and subtle droning atop. Inside the track it gets switchbacked again and again in a  magnificent mode. Uzume is a very short yet the funniest whistling on the release with occasional orchestrations. Indeed, due to it the track does have inner impetus to evolve into a full-fledged one. In a word, it is a cute issue in the discography of MiMi Records.

Smut – Conveniently Broken (2015)

  • Alternative rock
  • Indie rock
  • Shitgaze
  • Noise rock
  • Cover
  • Lo-fi
  • Psych-rock
  • Garage rock

Comment: Smut is a combo/trio from Miami, Florida, The United States Of America, whose sound is fraught with pointed guitar noises, diffuse drumming and husky female-led vocals yet preserving a welcome laid-back attitude during this 14-minute session. Stylistically it comes out of the tradition of the so-called shitgaze genre, which powerfully appeared approximately 10 years ago. However, it is a logical point in the tradition of noise and garage rock. One song from a bunch of 5 compositions is By Tomorrow being a cover of the cult compatriots Black Tambourine. I like the trio’s attitude of being no hurry to reach one end point followed by another. Just relax and keep up going in that pace. Ultimately the issue sounds like a long, integrated track altogether. The issue is a follow-up to Matter That Soils or Blackens (2014).

Basnie – Les Pays-Bas (2008)

  • Sampledelic
  • Modern classical
  • Avant-garde
  • Tango
  • Drone pop
  • Film noir
  • Experimentalism
  • Electronic music
  • Musique concrète
  • Art music
  • Spoken word
  • Sound collage
  • Post-classical
  • Organcore
  • Mood music
  • Easy listening

Comment: first of all, it is very sweet to see such an irresistibly created retrodelic cover quite intentionally depicting those futuristic ideas related to electronic music and krautrock and progressive rock. The aesthetic of Kraftwerk, for instance. On the other side, by watching this marvellous one it predicts something special for the listener. This bunch of 17 compositions starts off with Tango Para No Balair, which is a cinematic, even ghastly insight while representing different music styles in an one piece as well (nu jazz, plunderphonics, tango noir, easy listening). Given that cinematic aspect with the mechanic sound of a film camera in the background it is not surprising at all because behind the project is the Dutchman Bas Niemans, who is being expert at doing videos. Because of that, it is not wondrous at all how he succeeded in establishing an album of having so many colours, edges, penumbras and full shadows. But I am wondering how he is being musically so talented to create something like this. This sonic scope of him is truly wide ranging from ghastly tango and plangent harmonium-led drone pop/organcore vignettes and Parisian street music to overwhelming electronic progressions and spoken word-infused situations somewhere in the midst of carnival or on noisy street or in crowd. In spite of offering up the undulating fold of images with poignant knots the issue is seamlessly wholesome. By kindred souls there can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Oskar Hallbert, Yann Tiersen, Bark Cat Bark, Penguin Café Orchestra. In a word, it is a mind-boggling juggernaut from the past. The outing is a part of the discogrpahy of an Utrecht, the Netherlands-based imprint 2419 Record Label.

  • Glitch techno
  • Minimal dub
  • Drum and bass
  • Tech-dub
  • Ambient
  • Electronic music
  • Minimal techno
  • Ambient dub
  • Post-classical

Comment:  David Turgeon has been heading No Type, and Panospria imprints since 1998, and as a musician as Camp he had been active since 2000 to 2007 (being very prolific in the span of time). Mean consists of 10 previously unreleased compositions, which in general consist of techno and IDM-drenched vibes though at times the Canadian musician searches for other directions either. For instance, one can hear enough ambient and dub-inflected appendixes, which are mostly coated with glitched-out its and incisive shards. Droning layers are set up in the midst of crunchy rhythms to establish drowsy harmonies. However, an obvious exception is Fucking in Tents based on the frantic drum and bass pattern, being counterpointed by a volatile synthesised layer atop. Another dodge is Hardly (feat. The Acoustics), which is an (electro-) acoustic composition indeed. It involves a mind-provoking post-classical shift within itself. The central piece of the issue is What When All The Air Is On The Ground?, which is compressed and slowed down and immersed in dreams being at times interrupted by a disparate kind of samples. In spite of it the notch chimes organically. Burn is an excellent ambient piece where elemental aurora borealis-alike flickers are mingled with majestic spacey layers thereby a little bit reminding of another Montrealer Tim Hecker (especially his first issues). In a nutshell, it is a great issue with the known and unknown tricks. Of course, the issue is a part of the discography of No Type.

Red Cosmos - Dreaming In Unison (2015)

  • Alternative pop
  • Electronic pop
  • Poptronica
  • Chillwave
  • Glo-fi

  • Post-punk
  • Art pop

Comment: I used to adore and hate the list of the best albums at the end of year. I hate it because many excellent releases issued in a certain year I had had no time to listen to them and add to the list. One of such albums is Red Cosmos` sophomore issue Dreaming In Unison. Indeed, three long years had passed since the Englishman Kim Tortoise released his debut There And Back on Clinical Archives in 2012. The issue starts off with high-spirited Kindred, which is an excellent indie/chillwave pop with ennobling harmonics, blissful noisy sonic shards and post-punk gears chiming like…Red Cosmos meets The Cure. The album will be finished off by Shout Into The Sky, which is similarly highly epic and beautiful. Both of them are real pop gems to be measured up to pop charts. That`s the fact. I am really fascinated by them being not tired after listening to them many times in a row. In the meantime, Kim Tortoise’s account could be considered more sophisticated thereby reminding of his compatriots Nick Currie aka Momus and Alan Driscoll aka The Womb`s doings. More profoundly, he likes to play with the listener`s attitude and aesthetical perceptions in elegant way. Funk Night sounds like being a tribute to Spacemen 3, and Spiritualized mingling together poppy and experimental sides of alternative pop music. Frequently his aesthetic is saturated with humour and sadness, a times being buffoonish, thereof catching hold of the listener even with greater strength. At We Should Have Kissed Kim Tortoise shows again his immense love towards post-punk rhythmic lines. Carnal Vindicator is an amusing blend of music hall, comedy and electro-rockabilly. In fact, what the fuck is that? Taken together, get this album of 12 different chapters full of uncanny artsy phenomena while being up to.

RPTAOman – Dolní oblast Vítkovice (2015)

  • Industrial noise
  • Avant-garde
  • Non-music
  • Rhythmic noise
  • Experimentalism
  • Leftfield

Comment: this issue can partly be considered a found sound issue and partly an industrial/noise one because the base of this 16-notch release is made of recordings from an industrial workplace. Indeed, the creator of this overwhelming release firstly recorded the sounds of machines and the machinery to later mix them to a mind-blowing waterfall of noises. The next question may be of how to convert these abrasive sounds to one’s emotions? Is there any proper interface to endorse it? I can say there is no problems with those anonymous compositions that are done for you in an easy manner. Theoretically and practically the artist follows the binary between noises and silence though in fact the noises are being remarkably more tangible on it. It is even to the extent that the listener can perceive as if there is no longer space for those intense frequencies to be housed. Furthermore, it is life and the work environment for many of us. On the other side, it is a piece of art, though tough art. The issue is a bit of the discography of CS Industrial 1982-2010, of which purpose is to reaffirm industrial tinged music from the aforementioned span of time either from the former Czechoslovakia or separate parts of them at later time.

  • Organic electronica
  • Alternative
  • Drone pop
  • Organcore
  • New Weird
  • Free folk
  • Weird folk
  • Epic
  • Art folk

Comment: this 7-notch is an issue of the discography of Totokoko imprint from Japan, which predominantly is being a platform for indie and folk and mellow electronic mixed songwriting. The same could be admitted about this issue. More profoundly, one can hear drowsy melodica-based drones, lone string plucking, hovering electronic motives, poignant semi-orchestrations making your soul bleeding (at Cinematic Twin Leaf, for instance). In fact, all the other compositions have been made in a similar vein though inner relation between the aforementioned elements might be different. At times the composition is complemented with psychedelic organs and fragile singing and found sounds thereby giving a feeling as if sitting on the bench nearby the picturesque woods of emitting otherworldly energy and power. At times you will fall into sleep, dreaming uncanny stories with sprites and faeries. The outing is quite austere but any chord of it is adeptly drawn and made visible. Any detail makes sense. The release is short-running thereof I would have liked to hear more from the artist.  Ultimately it could be admitted it is a bloody great issue. Get it.

  • Ambient drone
  • Experimental electronica

  • Minimalism
  • Avant-garde
  • Minimalism
  • Abstract
  • Micronoise

Comment: it comes out from nowhere to evolve slowly, providing many minimalist and microtonal pictures to be seamlessly followed up by each other throughout 27 minutes. It is a sort of slide show. Indeed, the Canadian Martin Sasseville from the province of Quebec maps out darker and barely audible areas, which are enriched by hazy imaginations in droning and resonating mode. His management of the issue is predominantly based on phase shift and phase difference and operating with pitch bending. At times the listener can be a witness to rhythms coming out of this manipulation. With regard to the set of 27 minutes the review of mine should be as minimal as Sasseville`s music but I am not sure is it in this way accomplished or not. Maybe it is, and thereof you have to listen to this by yourself and pinpoint all the essential points of this magnificent issue. The issue is a part of the discography of the Canadian imprint Panospria.

Effendorf – Love Peace And Slavoj Zizek (2013)

  • Alternative
  • Electronic pop
  • Electro pop
  • Primitive
  • Breakcore
  • Techno pop

Comment: I might be feeling myself a little bit disturbed by listening to this 5-track issue. Firstly, it is an electronic music album in false manner where the listener can be a part of deliberately added interfering elements and naïve synthesized passages and primitive electronic appearances. On the other side, it is a highly catchy one thereby eliciting thoughts about the talented musician behind it. Musically it is a smooth case because those sonic needles are put to the forefront and integrated into the whole at the same time. Although the issue is quite short-running the EP includes a bunch of interesting dodges and threads into different styles and effects. What would I say about the title? Love and peace are both very essential topics in the existence of the humankind but the humour is that glue which is an important ingredient to guarantee inner integrity of the phenomena. It is nice to find hints at Slavoj Zizek, which is obviously an ironic stab toward hipsters who naturally like to cite the hipsters` philosopher. By giving attention to the titles of the EP one gets convinced to be true. And as you have already figured out that the first sentence of mine with regard to be slightly disturbed was just a hypothesis about my inner sensations. Now I am feeling the hypothesis come to be true. I am happy with that. Hands up!

Modek – Acid Before Lunch (2008)

  • Techno
  • Tekno
  • Alternative
  • Acid techno
  • Acid house

Comment: Recent Music Heroes is back again at the discography of Proc-Records, this time listening to Modek`s 4-notch issue (proc054) where the most pre-eminent word is “acid”. Indeed, taking acid before lunch and after lunch in the way it happened to be in the United Kingdom in the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s. The current issue could be considered a tribute to it or a solid follow-up to it. There were such styles as acid techno, and acid house, which strongly influenced the club/dance music scene and alternative rock/indie scene locally and a little bit later worldwide. I like Modek`s way to set up the path and then unleash all his energy and anxiety into it to foster it in a quite maniac way. However, more elaborated and hypnotized rhythms one can enjoy in the final part of the issue (Acid004). Get slammed and stoned by these tectonic vibes.

  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Dada music
  • Improvised music
  • World music
  • Free jazz

Comment: Arin Dodò is a collective, which consisted of five members at least at the time of creating and issuing this fabulous 14-piece issue. More profoundly, the release is based on improvised suites being arranged on such instruments as tablas, didgeridoo, clarinet, double bass, piano, and some other ones. At times the voice is exploited in dadaist manner either being elaborated or being presented naturally. In general, the result is frantic and versatile because of conjuring up intriguing and mind-provoking combinations both in sound and stylistic diversity. By kindred souls the combo reminds of Dadala where free jazz meets other styles as electronica, electro-acoustic music and noise in many different manifestations. Furthermore, Arin Dodò adds also a world music dimension to it. It is needless to add that different experimental jazz phases from bebop and post-bop to modal jazz used to surface throughout the course. The issue is a part of the discography of CRLM Office. Fabulous.

Veem – My Friend The Voice (2005)

  • Electronic music
  • Ambient
  • Synthwave
  • Alternative
  • Indietronica
  • Ambient pop

Comment: by depending on a listener this 8-track issue might sound either making a lot to happen or being just minimally built up. For sure, there are up a bunch of sonic elements that enrich the whole palette of the recording, which in general used to base on ambient pop/space pop structure it kind of just cruises throughout the course. With regard to the album’s title one could hear (the human being’s) voice, though, being represented in a small amount. At Wormhole the artist exploits guitar chords to lay down more natural sensations in the recording. The aforementioned sonic elements establish contrast against the slowly moving cloudy ambient undulations. Ultimately at the end of the release after some listening times on loop you could recognize it is a decent issue being issued on Manchester-based imprint Hippocamp 11 years ago.

Ykymr – Spring Fields Become a Hummingbird (2016)

  • Folktronica
  • Ambient pop
  • Shoegaze
  • Alternative
  • Modern classical
  • Art pop
  • Mood music
  • Epic
  • Yacht rock

Comment: Ykymr is an artist from Tokyo, Japan whose 7-track issue sounds like a picture extracted from a sunny day when you have no obligations to go somewhere and do something. Given that this soundscape of 7 compositions is mostly unhurried and relaxed where thoughtful acoustic guitar chords are mingled with exquisite electronic progressions where one could discern majesty and soulful depth. Nervous Club Weekender can be tagged as yacht rock because of being outrightly serene. Snow In the Southerly is another highly unagitated moments where lone piano chords are mixed up with found sounds and barely audible electronic developments. The same could almost be said about Spring Birds though being produced in a more minimalist manner. However, there are some moments where laid-back glimpses are jettisoned for more tumultuous ones. For instance, at Sleepy the artist used to experiment with loud shoegaze-y guitars and pummelling drums, however, providing also an epic account though doing it quite otherwise than his more tranquil ones thereinbefore. In a word, the result is worth remembering to the extent of being one of the best issues in 2016. The issue is a part of the discography of the Italian imprint La bèl.

Testicular Seizure – Sinister Gore (2009)

  • Goregrind
  • Death metal
  • Dark electro
  • Brutal metal

Comment: This 6-track issue makes me feel psyched because the US-based trio entitled as Testicular Seizure bombards us with death metal and goregrind liquids, by executing it in a very intense, obtuse and loud way. By stylistic characteristics, it is slightly slowed down and at times this massive sonic waterfall being conjured up with low bass thudding, frantic drumming and visceral, rotten vocals are jettisoned to replace it with angular dark electro and electronic music (for instance, Middle Intro, and the final part of Fuck Up the Pedophile). Frequently the issue chimes like a couple of tracks would have replayed at the same time. It makes difference undoubtedly even in the goregrind and death metal scene and within the discography of Torn Flesh Records. Of course, given that you are intended not to horrify your kids do not play it for them. It is an uncompromising protest against a part of bad things related to the humankind.

Spacecraft – The Mission Continues (2007)

  • Abstract
  • Techno
  • Lo-fi
  • DIY
  • Electronic music
  • Experimental techno
  • Avant-techno

Comment: this issue is from a decade being released approximately 10 years ago is a mind-provoking one due to those obtuse rhythmic patterns and dull synthesizer-based progressions. As I said already this issue was released roughly 10 years ago thereby foreseeing all those gentle tape label-based issues residing proudly at Bandcamp today. On the other side, it is also about the past and surfaces as a tribute issue to those industrial music combos that emerged four decades ago and later started to focus more on dance-appealed rhythms and less sonic experiments (for instance, Cabaret Voltaire, and Throbbing Gristle). The issue is a part of the immense discography of Proc-records (proc005). Thematically the laconic issue is related to space objects, and space invasions. More profoundly, it is all about asteroids, black holes, laser radiation, and conquests. In a word, it is a solid techno ghost from the past.
