Arts & Crafts - Arts & Crafts Sampler Vol. 7 (2010)
9.0
/Electronic pop, Alternative pop/rock, Indie pop, Baroque pop, Compilation/
Comment: this 12 track sampler is issued on a well-known Canadian indie label, named Arts & Crafts. There are represented such artists as Sally Seltmann, Zeus, Dan Mangan, Chilly Gonzales, Timber Timbre, Amy Millan, Broken Social Scene, Jason Collett, Los Campesinos, The Most Serene Republic, Still Life Still, The Hidden Cameras. Indeed, it can be said that the best part of these artists have already established their reputation, thereby being beloved all around the world. However, stylistically the miscellany veers away from the instances of silenful alt-folk contemplations and burbly indie rock examples to shimmering brass and baroque pop, soft rock revival and more electronically whimsical propulsions and majestic spiritual outbursts.
The Flesh Eating Goons - Cranium Crunch EP (2004)
9.0
/Surf pop, Avant-pop, DIY, Experimental, Lo-fi, Psychedelic pop, Rockabilly, Mood music/
Comment: a musical project with the funny name, called The Flesh Eating Goons conveys 8 short-running tracks (all the pieces used to be finished off at the length of 2 minutes) to the listeners interlacing dashing surf pop compositions imbued with frantic shuffles on chords and cadences with some rockabilly motives, self-conscious lo-fi sensitivity and humorous sensibility now and then. And those moody overdrives based on slightly gleaming guitar riffs and psychedelic keyboards are simply fascinating. Because of that this case can be compared with the likes of Man...Or Astroman, Juanitos, and Messer Chups, for instance. And these tracks make up your day.
Collapse - A Mano Armata (2011)
9.3
/Technical metal, Crossover, Surf rock/
Comment: Collapse introduces this 4-track album with spacey, expressive guitar riffs-gliding (the kind of which could have been an essential part of some albums by Michael Karoli, CAN`s guitarist, for example) which soon will be stricken by tumultuous noodling and frantic power washes full of ferocious but technical metal aesthetics, merciless chug and graceful overdrives which brings forth the influences - surprise, surprise - of surf music. In a word, it is an almost crossover album drifting between turbo-sustained technical metal patterns and infrequent surf pop rays. The collective originates from Firenze/Florence, Italy. Great in its self-awareness and self-confidence.

Pillars & Tongues - Epitonic saki Session (2011)
9.4
/Slowcore, Drone pop, Alternative, Americana, Live session, Avant-pop, Experimental indie, Psychedelic pop, Ethereal pop/
Comment: this set of 4 tracks does build on a highly enjoyable live session for a fascinating music site, entitled Epitonic. However, Pillars & Tongues` soundscape consists of soothing drone undercurrents, dreamy pronounced singing and soulful vowel effects and loosely throbbing rhythms below the two firstly named constituents above. The last track (which will be finished off at the length of 16 minutes) seems to be biased more toward improvised elements, i.e fusing the elements of buzzing minimalism, slight Americana-related touch and expressive ethereal pop, a subtle batch which in the last section evolves into man and woman mixed vowel experiments involving both shamanic and hypnagogic elements.
Son Of A Bricklayer - Shades Of Grey (2008)
9.4
/Techno, Trip-hop, Downtempo, Experimental electronica, Cinematic/
Comment: This 11-track album is a good instance of how mesmerizing, dance-appealed rhythms should be interlaced with more affective facets of pop-laden electronica or on the other side providing more thoughtful but vigorous trip-hop/downtempo clatter. More profoundly, the listener can detect elusive, cinematic samples as if being a humble witness for the mesmeric motion of clouds above his/her head; now and then it involves silentful smoky reverberations and hazy, though at times murky contemplations abundant with repetitive chords and suggestive harmonies behind it. In a word, it is blissed-out and spaced-out at the same time. This is a great classic by any intentions.
Violeta Päivänkakkara - Kuu (2012)
9.5
/Forest folk, New Weird Finland, New Weird Europe, Weird folk, Free folk, Singer-songwriter, Organic electronica, Alt-folk, Experimental folk/
Comment: VP is a Finnish artist whose music to this album can be considered a part of the famous Finnish forest folk scene. The listener can be sure an intriguing example related to the genre is played craftily out. She provides a handful of addictive, bucolic tracks which are arranged with the assistance of searching, harmony-coated clambering guitar chords, glockenspiel-alike touches, some slightly bleak keyboard lines, microscopic noises and more or less whispering vocal lines, however all of that is accompanied with concrete sounds and thin air plateaus surrounding it at any corner. Furthermore, possible "faults" which might be found out from within the whole seem to be so affective, organic and concept-related thereby demonstating themselves like the strength on it. By kindred souls there can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Paavoharju, and Keijo (Virtanen), Lau Nau and Islaja. Simply glorious.

Jason "EVIL" Covelli - The Sick And The Psychotic (2010)
8.8
/Spoken word, Conceptual, Avant-garde, Psycho-acoustic, Experimental, Non-music/
Comment: indeed, Jason "Evil" Covelli spells out what does it mean being sick and psychotic, talking of abjection of the existence of a human being and criticizing the appearances in social life. How could we be normal and adequate at all in such societies we are living in at the moment? His speech is essentially impassioned and accentuated. There are presented a pair of monologues, especially the first part stands in the middle of the release because it lasts for a little longer than one hour. So the listener could add the release to the folder of the existentialism or psychology-related topics. So consume this fucking piece of freedom!
Reverend big O - When There Is Only Light To Believe In/Hope For (2012)
9.2
/Post-rock, Epic, Experimental rock, Dream pop, Alternative rock, Electronic pop, Kosmische Musik/
Comment: the collective comprises Nicklas Nilsson, Jörgen Dahlqvist, Marcus Råberg, Henrik Palmberg, and Lukas Råberg. Before issuing on 23 Seconds they had been releasing music for A West Fabrication. However, the particular set is made up of both bombastic and dreamy pathos oozing out and thereafter ascending higher from the compositions based on the monumental moments of gleaming guitar works and epic drum sequences and lofty keyboard washes. The notches where the power of guitars is abandoned gradually and instead of it synthesizers and treated snippets began to prevail the collective`s music approaches a little to the aesthetics of some representatives of the 1970`s German Kosmische Musik. By contemporary artists there can be drawn parallels upon the likes of God Is An Astronaut, for instance. Moreover, such kind of music can be tagged as an instance of today`s progressive rock.
さいごのくに - 黒傘のame (2011)
8.8
/J-pop, Alternative, Shibuya-kei, Electronic pop, Ethereal pop/
Comment: this set of three compositions (consisting of the original track and a pair of remixes for it) is a case to showcase the ethearalness of J-pop filled with atmospherical voices and vowel effects, and lone guitar chords which in turn are backed up by intriguing elements - for instance, depending on certain tracks there are available such details as seductive glockenspiel works, the noises of radio waves and programmed propulsive chunks.

dadub - ∆ (2011)
9.4
/Dub, Ambient, Ambient dub, Crossover, Dubstep, Soundscapes/
Comment: this 3-track issue produced by Daniele Antezza and Giovanni Conti consists of lengthy progressions at the length of 7-8 minutes where very wide panoramas grow out to bemixed up with catchy but a little bit haunting dub oscillations, however, thus constituting a mesmerizing outlet full of gliding charm and magic dust. The last track remixed by Arogalla sounds like a tribute to a melodica and dub wizard, Augustus Pablo (by the way, yesterday I was listening to an album, called Vanishing Point (1997), the favourite of mine regarding the production of Scottish acid rockers Primal Scream at which the Jamaican musician was also participant once. And kudos to Bobby Gillespie who besides making great music also fights for right subjects in the world). In a word, it is like the flight of the bluebird whom you are not able to catch.
Youth Camp - //-// (2012)
9.0
/Ambient, Minimal, Drone, Experimental electronica, Ambient dub, Experimental rock, Ambient rock, Post-rock/
Comment: this handful of tracks created by the yankee James Harris`one-man project starts off with a little bit unpleasant, tightly abrasive pulsating noises (there can be drawn parallels upon the works of the likes of Konrad Schnitzler, and Manuel Göttsching, for example) which later will be softened, however, turning sometime into pronounced guitar fingerpicking or more rattling twangs either in the middle of lone chords of the bass drum or extensive air areas surrounding the listener around all corners. Furtermore, it involves some moments where you can be a fitness of how Harris can create hearttrending moments. On the other side, it used to convey to the listener concrete sounds and hazy ambient (dub) panoramas blended endeavours. However, the result is impressive and worth to be caught up.
Tomsk IDM Composers - Avalon Glow (2012)
9.1
/Dubstep, Experimental techno, IDM, Witch house, Crossover, Experimental electronica, Grime, Hip-hop/
Comment: this set of 4 tracks at the length of over 17 minutes provide either the facets of deviated hip-hop/grime music or dazed IDM/experimental techno outlets. More detailedly, the project do sketch bubbling rhythm tentacles and blissful plateaus and gloomy yet somehow amusing vocal lines. Of course, at the moment such kind of sound represented by the group is to be considered to have lots of intersections with the vibes of such murky styles as witch house and dubstep as well.
Insub Meta Orchestra - archive #1 (2011)
9.2
/Acousmatics, Psycho-acoustic, Electro-acoustic, Noise, Improvised music, Avant-garde, Experimentalism, Microtonal, Musique concrète, Conceptual/
Comment: the lineup of Insub Meta Orchestra consists of a formidable amount of artists who used to exploit unusual instruments and "instruments" in addition to the conventional ones. For instance, besides guitars, violin, saxophone and laptop the listener will get aware of the presence of theremin, tone generator, tennis racquet (sic!), and buzuki. On the other side, in rough sense this 6-piece album can be considered a cooperation (or exploration of) between acoustic and electronic sonority which is tightly spiced up with the snippets of concrete sounds and amplified sonic effect-relied washes. This erratic universe results in flourishing psycho-acoustic noises and cagy microtonal contemplations where the inner borders are blurred and could only be fixed contingently. Is it an instance of meta sound then?
Major Crimes - Monsoon (2012)
9.1
/Leftfield, Alternative pop, Bedroom pop, DIY, Experimental indie/
Comment: behind this Adeliade, Australia-based group hides himself Brian Bonz and his numerous collaborators and friends at the time of recording sessions. Their 4-track publication stands at the crossroads of new and old, between modern and traditional, between bedroom/DIY aesthetics and "established" music. Basically it is instrumental psychedelic pop showcasing slight soul and funk ingredients based on spatial guitar chords and wah wah based effects and programmed rhythms in the background. This album could be considered a solid chain between Ariel Pink, and the mid-period CAN or hypothetically Jimi Hendrix and Sly & The Family Stone mixed enterprises, for instance.
Ze German – White Label Techno (2011)
Depth
8.4
/Techno, Club dance, Rave, Trance techno, Electronic pop/
Comment: this 4-track issue takes mostly on trance mixed techno which is directed toward party and rave peoples using swift paces and acute frequencies. More detailedly, potential arty aspirations are quite minimized and more power and electricity is accrued instead of it. Almost every notch on it involves samples from other artists` compositions (Musique, Yaz, Robert Tepper) thereby providing quite loose, even sampledelic transitions to other directions. These pumping beats can be thought to be an optimal subject played both in the abandoned factories and at the Freedom Parade. Let`s call it either street or stadium techno.
7/16/2012
The Plastic Jazz Orchestra - 39° (2012)
9.4
/IDM, Experimental electronica, Nu-jazz, Indietronica, Avant-electronica/
Comment: TPJO was established by Bernd Burnson as an ensemble electronique for modern music in late 2006. Although soon thereafter he passed away his ideas do perdure. Indeed, the rhythms and beats coming out of it are poignantly composed, however, having a loads of hints at different genres and fields (indie, jazz, IDM, tango). At times it comes out as quite joyous entertainment, sometimes, on the contrary, providing more epic gliding and shifts. If you are interested in to get the more detailed comparisons for it then you can think of it as an example of how Bang On A Can could sound under the umbrella of Warp Records.
Вежа Хмар - Плач (1998)
9.2
/New Weird Ukraine, Neofolk, Lo-fi, Weird folk, Avant-folk, Dream folk, Experimental folk, Dark folk, Anti-folk, Free folk, Improvised music/
Comment: this 17-piece issue is a hidden gem having already been recorded in the ending part of the 1990s. This Ukraine-based musical group takes on a quirky kind of folk music which pours out ghastly vowel lines and effects, trance-induced drums, elusive (mini)-orchestrations, silentful monotonously bouncing bass chords, and some expressive keyboard drones (one track includes even the samples by Kraftwerk). The whole is an organic drift made up of both improvised approach and deliberated tactics. There can be drawn parallels upon the representatives of dark/neofolk, New Weird-related and the Finnish forest folk scenes. In a word, after listening to the release you can feel it was a truly elusive, unforgettable experience of the folk shamanism. Purgative and relieving in any cases.
A Bee Hive - Untitled (2009)
9.3
/Alt-folk, DIY, Improvised music, Dream folk, Folk indie, Experimental rock, Indie folk, Post-rock, Fusion, Crossover/
Comment: there are presented 4 pieces by Matthew David Rowan which used to be the improvised instrumental ones, however, where silentful drifts are variegated with exciting turns and flamboyant outbursts. More surprisingly, now and then (the second part) it chimes like a sort of fusion sound made up of the indie folkies` gliding explorations, jazz rock-esque mellow vibes and even post-rock-alike omnipotent sonic grandeur. In a word, MDR`s soundscape flourishes because it used to be lush at any moment throughout the course. Well done by any means. Love it.

Arbor Glades - Coming Home EP (2012)
9.0
/Glo-rock, Alternative pop/rock, Indie rock/
Comment: this 5-track album is one of the examples which does convey some hints at flamboyant power related to the Canadian indie scene. This Montrèal-based combo offers up highly chiming guitar structures and infinite chord changes adorned with the whiffs of dilating synth endeavours and daringly gliding yet longing vocal lines over them. I would like to call this kind of music a sort of glo-rock which is thought to be an entertainment subject for slackers and dalliers. In a word, cheers to the big masses, here we come!
Starstarstar - 2009 04 20 Record Lounge (2009)
9.3
/Freak folk, New Weird America, Dream folk, Live session, Alt-folk, Americana, Improvised music/
Comment: indeed, it is one of those many sessions improvised by Golda, McConeghy, and Rogers by the side of East Lansing, Michigan, USA which all are available at Archive.org. Before starting as starstarstar the trio was being known as ringostar, and ***. Regarding the session most of the pieces originate from starstarstar`s sole album and masterpiece Electric Goose and The Nylon Moose (on fabulous Rack & Ruin Records) which is an extraordinary but underrated (if not to say a yet undiscovered one) gem within the New Weird America scene involving the elements of quirky folk, heartfelt soul, halcyon electronic experiments, dreamy incantations, and exuberant Americana progressions. The music which reflects back to the past and forth to the future at the same time. The session of 10 tracks surprises with some unknown compositions. I really hope they are intended to come back sometime and ready to record at least one more album yet. Additionally I recommend listen to Chad Golda`s avant-garde solo albums either (on Rack & Ruin, and Writing Records).
Knock-Knock & NECROdog - Deja Vu (2011)
8.7
/Electro, Gabber, Tekno, Club dance/
Comment: there are up 2 notches based on rigid but fast electro and tekno/gabber mixed beats, tingling synth oscillations and sharp vocal samples. Indeed, the pair of tracks is deliberately minimal, though, the second track (Gabber In Psychedeliya) does have more time and diapason to get more involved in shuffled and variegated patterns on rhythms.
7/14/2012
Neurobit - Maison De Verre Sur Le Chantier (2012)
9.2
/Experimental electronica, Ambient pop, Electronic pop, Drone pop, Post-psychedelic electronica, Post-pop, Soundscapes/
Comment: this issue by Bas Welling aka Neurobit consists of one lengthy composition only. More concretely, there are up approximately 1200 seconds at which the listener can discern different parts which are brought forth due to incessant progressions. A particular amount of chords are channelized into soothing undulations and reaching the borders of otherworldly beatific spheres. However, these lucid synth undercurrents (actually they are rather overcurrents) and silentfully ticking, vibraphone-near electronica which is set subtly between the lines comes quite close to the aesthetics of early Mice Parade, Tortoise, and The Dylan Group. The finishing part of the track will be evolving step by step into an instance of pronounced drone pop full of poignant shapes and austere yet epic outbursts (comparable with such contemporary projects as Oneothrix Point Never, and Emeralds, and The Silver Apples by the 1960s).
Boyish/Daisyblue - Gentle Breeze EP (2012)
9.2
/Alternative rock, Indie pop, Jangle pop, J-pop/
Comment: this is a sequent issue on a Japanese label, called Canata Records. In any cases, this 4-track issue created by two bands can be characterized by highly joyous guitar works reminiscent of a timespan having been between the mid-80s and the beginning of 90s when the indies made their first efforts. The whole is filled with blossoming guitar chords and suggestive vocal reveries (variegated with male and female vocals respectively) which sometimes is embellished with heavy keyboard-based works. There can be drawn parallels upon the likes of McCarthy, The Pastels, early Primal Scream, The Chameleons. The closing Summer Film track by Daisyblue resembles a little bit of Happy Mondays` Lazytis. In all, it is soo nostalgic and impressive!
brh06 V.A.- Breathe 06 (2012)
8.7
/Indie pop, Krautrock, Chillout, Dark ambient, Electronic pop, Funk, Downtempo, Baroque pop/
Comment: this 14-track miscellany involves such artists as ArnAck, Transmission 13, Ohuican/Jaguar Nahuatl, Capisconne, Ray Garrido, Bobby Wotnot, Invector, Dimitris, Nahuatl Sound System, PerlssDj, TSS Tortue Super sonic, Nulix, Gapisconne, 1981, and Vela. However, the music presented by these projects used to extend from brooding ambient/dark ambient and New Age-tinged reverberations to flourishing indie pop appearances and motorik krautrock-ish propulsions and smooth funk vibes and uplifting chillout appearances.
7/13/2012
emptywhale — Fearscapes (2012)
9.2
/Dark ambient, Dystopbient, Epic, Organic electronica, Ambient, Soundscapes, Avant-garde/
Comment: this handful of tracks is composed of dark-hued ambient vibes flourishing on incessant, repetitive patterns. I used to call such creepy kind of music as dystopbient, though, sometimes through its charmingly resigned templates it showcases some bias toward blissful ambient shapes (Suburbs) and organic, concrete sound-filled undulation. In a nutshell, the listener can perceive intense internal burning which seems to be the main plot of the issue. The listener could probably draw parallels upon the likes of Loscil, Pan American, Eluder, Caustic Reverie.
Conveyor - Mukraker (2012)
9.4
/Alt-folk, New Weird America, Americana, Glo-fi, Baroque pop, Avant-pop/
Comment: I can remember for that Conveyor`s first issue Sun Ray (2011) was an astonishing effort full of mesmerizing harmonies and modern compositions. However, the Brooklyn-based quartet`s single continues the same path mixing up light-hearted blisstronic oscillations with the glorious New Weird America, and Americana tradition (these emotionally impressive vocal lines and hazy orchestrations/brass sections used to make true impact upon the listener). The single originates from the band`s self-titled album issued on Paper Bag Records in 2012. Mandatory by any means.
Ergo Phizmiz - Nose Points In Different Directions (2010)
8.9
/Plunderphonics, Sound collage, Sampledelic, Cut and paste, Experimental electronica, Avant-garde/
Comment: Phizmiz provides 14 notches which can be described as a tumultuous issue blossoming on different samples, quirky bents and an enourmous amount of hints at various times and cultures all around the world. Of course, due to the earlier doings of a legend of the plunderphonics/conceptual art scene (and by the nature of the scene) you can be sure that his result is not surprising at all. It veers away from the improvised sets of beatbox music and noiseful gears to the samples of genuine classical music. However, the question can just be reduced to the one - is it enough suitable to your recent psychological condition and nature, though? Yet, undoubtedly it is intriguing and enough intricate to have a couple of listening times at least. Or much more.
Lufth - Tendenzen (2003)
9.1
/Trip-hop, Dub, Breaks, Experimental electronica, Chill out/
Comment: undoubtedly a label called Thinner was one of the first netlabels who had provided qualitative kind of dance rhythms and broken beats. This 4-track publication takes on sublime, slow-paced pieces including mainly acidic trip-hop progressions and glowering dub-moulded mist, however, involving some acoustic chords in between the aforementioned styles either. In a word, the set is rich emotionally and sensually. It is truly worth to be remembered.
7/11/2012
Andrew Cedermark - Moon Deluxe (2010/2012)
9.0
/Chamber pop, Alternative rock, Indie pop/
Comment: AC conveys an intriguing batch of 3 notches which is made up of lush orchestrations infiltrated with more noiseful guitar strumming and frequencies or on the other side is composed of harmonica-led indie chips and glockenspiel-tinged colours and rough blues chords. Sometimes there can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Richard Hawley, and The Pixies.
Puke Skywalker - Tripper Crust EP (2012)
8.8
/Noise rock, Crust punk, Brutal metal, Grindcore, Hardcore, Anti-rock/
Comment: this handful of very short-running tracks consists of the brutal punk essence involving the elements of self-englutting noise rock and extreme metal/grindcore which are variegated with some doleful spoken word chips. Indeed, it sounds like a hardcore combo who is intended to play their music at the speed of 2 times faster than the usual understanding of it used to be.
Youarehere - As When The Fall Leaves Trees (2011)
9.0
/Dream pop, Shoegazetronica, Alternative dance, Experimental indie, Modern classical, Post-rock/
Comment: Youarehere is an Italian musical group whose current album is a sign of how dreamy shoegaze-hued progressions are craftily fused with massive dance-appealed rhythms and dilating psychedelic currents and picturesque modern classical developments. Their approach, however, resembles of the undertakings of such groups as Locust, Seefeel, Ecovillage, M83, early Opium Flirt, French Teen Idol, The Japanese Gum, edPorth, and Superficial Random Knowledge Porridge.
Esoteric Sob - Abnormal Psychology (2011)
9.1
/IDM, Downtempo, Experimental electronica, Epic, Organic electronica, Mood music, Chill out/
Comment: predominantly moody IDM-tinged and majestic downtempo-hued paces by the Greek John Trifonopoulos do create organic yet melancholic atmosphere, though, at times offering up a little bit more spry (or is it blissful, though?) drive. Anyway, the listener can perceive pleasant power coming out of any slots of this set of 10 pieces. The album is to be finished off with the only vocal-based composition called Little moments (with Cellar Door).
7/07/2012
Don Redman Orch, V=Bill Robinson - Applette (1922)
10.0
/Big band, Jazz, Classic/
Comment: there is up one track which is to be finished off at the length of 2 minutes. It originates from the year of 1922, however, filled with brassy big band sounds, hand claps and many stepping shoes. Inspite of being a short-running piece it involves a huge amount of affective turns and poignant harmonic solutions. In a word, it is a classic one which is up to be rediscovered by the next generations. Anyway, it is a quite exotic listening experience by now.
Outlaw Producer & Trouble - Flight Speed (2011)
9.1
/Dub-house, Club dance, Deep house/
Comment: this batch of 5 tracks used to be filled with dub-drenched echoes and suggestive electro flashs and whimsical house rhythms and some deep house oscillations. The whole consists of the original mix and four remakes.
Waskerley Way - Cat Music
8.8
/DIY, Chillwave, Lo-fi, Alternative, Shoegazetronica, Dream pop/
Comment: this set of handful of tracks does showcase masterful compositions made up of moody synth-based dust and lo-fi/DIY propulsions (a la Ariel Pink or the Russian Futurists) and shoegaze-ish chill magic. In a word, the cats are cool, the album is cool.

Barthol Lo Mejor - Jet Set Rebels (2012)
9.1
/Alternative dance, Bubblegum techno, Electronic pop, Crossover, Electro pop/
Comment: this is a part of a double EP issued by the Estonian bubblegum techno and electro producer and popdada artist Barthol Lo Mejor some months ago. In short, the release is filled with uplifting rhythms and strict but suggestively gleaming propulsions. Its elegancy seems to be mastered by listening to Giorgio Moroder, Kraftwerk, Patrick Cowley, Dopplereffekt, and hectic Bollywood soundtracks. In a nutshell, this part is undoubtedly better section of the whole and is thought to be a dope for your body and mind.
Infinite Quazar - Intergalactic Boombox (2012)
9.4
/Instrumental hip-hop, Chill out, Cosmic-hop, Mood music, Acid jazz, Trip-hop/
Comment: this batch of short-running tracks (just only one piece will reach the length of more than 2 minutes) takes on instrumental space and innovative, dub-tinged, jazz reflections full of suggestively powerful fringes and endlessly soothing chips, however, without being cloying someway. The listener can discern the subtle contrast inbetween thunderous cadences and otherworldly reverberations pouring out of any slots represented on it. In a word, the result is an impressive one.
Horrible Present - 54, I Love You But It`s Time To Get Off (2012)
9.3
/Post-punk, Psychedelia, DIY, Experimental indie, Drone pop, Alternative, Lo-fi, Jangle pop/
Comment: this 10-piece issue seems to work without a hitch being mainly inspired by the 80s and 90s British post punk developments, uncompromising and innovative indie outlets, peripheral folk and psychedelic scene. All these endeavours are adorned with the hirsute DIY aesthetics and lo-fi outlines. The project`s sound based on chiming guitars, moody vocal lines, surging organ drones, some programmed rhythms used to be refreshing and nostalgic at the same time. Indeed, the album seems to be perfectly consistent with the likes of The Jesus & Mary Chain, early Primal Scream, Dub Sex, The Pastels, Spiritualized, Field Mice, Clinic, some The Slumberland-related projects etc.
Vicente Labarca - Núñez (2009)
8.6
/Instrumental, DIY, Lo-fi, Blues, Improvised music, Fusion/
Comment: this bunch of 4 tracks contains angularly recorded guitars and rhythm sequences,i.e this is an example of the genuine DIY recording. Now and then it sounds like the kind of live jamming, more profoundly, made up of surging yet repetition-heavy blues fabrics and some fusion-tinged forays. However, a huge amount of galvanic power and convulsive energy used to ooze out of any slots represented on this rough publication.
7/05/2012
Mirror Mode - Veils EP (2011)
8.9
/Shoegazetronica, Glo-fi, Dreamwave, Chillwave, Experimental indie, Post-psychedelic electronica, Post-pop, Poptronica/
Comment: This 6-piece EP is a catchy instance of a modern indie concept full of blissful synth bounces, programmed haziness and hectic guitar dust. Indeed, this issue can be considered a crossover album incorporating evenhandedly the aspects of suggestive, even anthemic shoegaze-esque propulsions and somnolent, dream-filled glo-fi/chillwave-ish immersion. These elements are backed up by dance-appealed vibes and frequencies. The project can be compared with the likes of Dykehouse, The Bilinda Butchers, Ecovillage, Teen Daze, and Locust (if to name just a few artists among others).
Spectral Park - Factory Peeled (2011)
9.3
/DIY, Psychedelia, Art punk, Crossover, Acid folk, Garage rock, Psych-rock/
Comment: this set of handful of notches is composed of the aspects of sheer, organ-driven psychedelia harking back to the 60s acid folk and rasping garage rock tradition and on the other side the issue involves some elements of punk aesthetics due to the impressive glimpses of hootenanny and ideology of DIY culture. The result is a rough yet charming one.
Al Lover - Cheapsdrugfreelove (2012)
9.3
/Psychedelia, Psych-rock, Avant-blues, Ambient rock, Experimental rock, Dance rock, Avant-rock, Space rock/
Comment: the templates of these tracks used to base on three whales - fisrstly, there are presented knee-deep, blues-driven propulsions, secondly you can perceive spacey, psych-rock reverberations and thirdly highly compelling dance rock grooves and sequences. It is filled with motorik drums and looping guitars` chords, and nervous yet catchy organ washes. Light-hearted chords are variegated with more obscure whiffs and oscillations. By listening to it, however, the subject could draw parallels upon the likes of Primal Scream, The Jefferson Airplane, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Gong, and Spacemen 3.
Red Alder - Dissociation (2011)
8.8
/Drone pop, Ambient pop, Alternative, Slowcore, Ethereal pop, Experimental indie, Leftfield/
Comment: having no exact idea of how should the concept "dissociation" be interpreted in the concrete, 7-piece context. Maybe it used to disseminate the idea of escapism, more concretely, the opposition to an alienated world. Musically, of course, it is not so strange, though, there are up some discrete ideas and hidden virtues. Stylistically it mainly veers away from solemn drone pop and a little ghastly slowcore-tinged progressions to more ethereal, even ambient-alike flickers and lofty, infiltrated modern classical developments. For instance, Planet Fall is an epic, dark-hued impression full of internal combustion.

Young Galaxy - Cover Your Tracks EP
9.2
/Chillwave, Glo-fi, Poptronica, Post-pop, Remixes, Dream pop, Electronic pop/
Comment: there are represented 4 tracks all of them are the covers by their side. Stylistically the case is the same in regard to all the notches. The compositions are made up of blissed-out electronica, comprising ethereal, somewhat longing vocals and poignant synthetic harmonies and subtly surging textures and their mesmerizing turns. No adjectives anymore.
Musica Universalis - Stella Atra (2011)
9.3
/Musique concrete, Epic, Post-rock, Organic electronica, Sound art, Crossover/
Comment: this one-track album (it is to be ended up when the clock is fixed at 45.25) contains the use of gamelans, recordings of seagulls, owls, the wind, and different boats. These concrete and instrumental elements are tightly interlaced with the chords of epic guitars, solemn cathedral organs, discrete yet silentful feedback droning and relaxing burning behind the pronounced sounds. The final 6 minutes are dominated by slightly stomping piano chords which will be followed by a set of lush guitar chords and visions. In a word, the result is an uplifting and crafty one.
Ville & Joonas - The Most Ultimate Best of the Greatest Hits of Ville & Joonas
8.5
/Trance, Electronica, Funny, Mood music, Kitsch pop, Lo-fi, Freeformfreakout, DIY, Avant-garde, Dada music, Eurobeat, Electronic pop/
Comment: there are up even 35 compositions all of them are submitted to the algorithms of DIY aesthetics and lo-fi constructions. Stylistically this set of short-running tracks extends from brooding trance and simplistic, kitschy eurobeat rhythms, tracker music-based chips and spoken word-infiltrated electronica to gleaming techno propulsions and funny, even a little dadaistic or psyched-out compositions. Now and then the tracks are filled with peeping glitches, buffoonish vowel (zombie-alike) effects, noiseful outbursts, and pitchbent effects. Indeed, all these aforementioned styles seem to be reflected through weird, unusual mirrors and not to be thought in very direct, ostensible sense. The compositions are deliberately exaggerated and it is sympathetic. There can be drawn parallels upon such artist as M.A. Numminen, their Finnish compatriot. The project should be a part of the Apskraft collective.
Ear Infection vol 1 (2012)
8.5
/Punk rock, Grrrl riot, Folk punk, Crossover, Alternative rock, Easycore, Hardcore/
Comment: this 42-track issue used to set its words about punk and...punk. Because of its huge volume and amplitude the miscellany does embrace a wide array of the style ranging from the demented, classical occurrences, hardcore outbursts and grrrl riot-driven angriness to bagpipe-steeped, folk-tinged arrangements, pub punk-mixed and happy punk/easycore instances. Furthermore, the listener can discover for more stylistical crossovers and appearances on it. These nettled exposures reveal lots of energy and appealing charm behind the frantic changes of chords and churning rhythmic sections. There are represented such artists as 20 Days In, Mouth, The Horny Bitches, Stench, The Ashamed, Scrap Monsters, Boobie Trap, Dorm Patriol, Bin Laden`s Daughter, Pipes And Pints, Husband N Knives and many other collectives. There are represented the bands from such countries as USA and Indonesia, Russia and Czech Republic, Germany and Finland etc. In a word, this is a great introduction to the aforementioned style
