The Hirundu – Tantalus (2019)

Comment: the members of The Hirundu got an inkling to embark on recording their own music by watching a TV show with the appearance of Happy Mondays there. It did happen sometime at the end of the 80s when soaring guitar sound was mingled with acid house inspired dance-appealed beats. I guess Johnny Crewdson and company from Blackpool did not get interested in that not because it was hip but it did have a strong psychedelic groove, possible DIY attitude and a solid amount of humour within the backbone. The things would have developed in the way the number of albums by The Hirundu today can already be compared to The Fall, another big favourite of theirs. From initial strong psychedelic groove and dadaist take on radiophonic art and frantic lo-fi pop and rock to be progressing into an idiosyncratic electronic experimental slot. However, by exploring the discography of the combo one can figure out unpredictable twitches between the aforementioned stylistic developments. Additionally, The Hirundu made a lot of modern lo-fi/DIY things to happen approximately a decade before Ariel Pink and a new wave of home recording artists did.
By listening to this 15-notch album and from the very first psychedelic soporific chords one can admit the proper way to set up new directions in music is to explore the past because music like everything around is an experiential and synthetic field for sure. More profoundly, it is Johnny Crewdson's retrodelic act one can hear influences coming out from Primal Scream's Screamadelica (A Nuttist) and sublime baggy rhythms by searching for psychedelic cloudless quietude and to be succumbed to halcyon gravity-free grasp. For instance, the album is ended up by Merengue, a superb melodic artsy pop approach where you can feel the ambition, dynamics, humor and sensibility. The album is top notch by any means especially living at a time when (mainstream) music is being fucked-up due to stupid exploitation of mechanical voice machines. At a time of talentless and cowardly artists.

Comment: in fact, these tags say all what will be happening in the next 14 tracks. Lots of purple-tinged electric piano chords and mostly mid-tempo breaks are up there for the turntable to lose its power by resulting in twisted chords and more and less unexpected changes in direction and gear. Hello on the other side is a very cheerful due to a combination of bubblegum-ish funk frequencies. Obviously another (compelling) hit beyond that overwhelming Feelgood. Highly welcome are adept dance-appealed entries into the compartment of electro-house and deep house. It can be admitted these 35 minutes are craftily balanced in mood and formal configuration given that it exceeds the fantasy of an average Flying Lotus' inspired artist. The astounding issue is a part of the discography of Orikami Records. Call it futuristic fusion if you wish, however, it is one of the best albums from the previous year.

Comment: first of all, this great album is issued by a Portuguese imprint, Enoughrecords which is apparently the oldest netlabel being active so far. All other netlabels which started earlier and some of those which would embark on later than 2001 are unfortunately defunct now. However, here it is an elegant gross of jagged intelligent dance mould – sorry, music – from neighbouring Spain which is spiced up by galvanized electro riffs and noisy chiptune undercurrents. For instance, an astounding track called 2000 Problems which almost sounds like an electro(nic) version of Gang Of Four (RIP Andy Gill). Superb cyber punk composition where brittle electronic fabric and air are exquisitely balanced to go ultimately up to an ecstatic dance-appealed apotheosis. However, merry companion by robots can be met everywhere throughout the course of this 9-track outing. Even more, it may sound like an indulgence for a fully mechanic world to come when human race could not keep the pace anymore and robots are singular enough...to single out. And those joyous samples from vintage TV adverts just accentuate a steep gap between the different eras, between the past and future. Forthcoming dance party based purely on reason. Pure reason is a pure fun.

Kryshe – Hauch (2019)

Comment: Kryshe is a German artist who likes obsessively operate with silence on different scales like ambient, classical music and electronic music. Furthermore, there are even jazz-tinged incantations and dreamy whiffs based on drowsy progressions. Musically Kryshe reminds of a late Talk Talk more than ever before but I think of it even as a more refined output. It is a subsequent astounding issue (Continuum, a second issue from the previous year) by Kryshe being released on Serein.

Comment: the Romanian persona (non) grata's (Felix Petrescu, and Valentin Toma) subsequent issue embarks on with rooster's crow as the signature to enter into a playful liberation of mind. Throughout the course of four tracks a listener can hear slowed-down and barely twisted sonic madness as if encountering either his/her possible nightmares or lush dreams (it depends on). One can hear ghastly echoes, slight metallic banging, hirsute hisses and pleasant sounds coming from the street but the most important thing is the coherent flow and impressive moment behind this crafty experimental work. More profoundly, it does mean lots of emotive knots and compelling sonic effects within the sonic fabric. That's a way of how industrial music should sound in the 21st century (post after post after post). Do not give a fuck to everything except the art.

Comment: at times life used to happen to go in the way one's preferences get set in by certain musical qualities and ingredients. Regarding my personal account The Conet Project: Recordings of Shortwave Numbers Stations and Leyland Kirby's project The Caretaker and their disciples The Fucked Up Beat set the pace. More profoundly, Brett Zehner, and Eddie Palmer behind the latter project did have even a bigger impact upon me due to controversial, conspiracy-trodden titles and uncanny spoken word snippets and volatile experimental electronic music even though over a dozen of albums The Fucked Up Beat did trudge along the one and the same trajectory in principle. That's OK, that's even normal practice, however, inside all of that would result in something which can be considered frantic, overwhelming and providing stark new spark and strength. To the uttermost extent and top regarding sonorous and emotive and subconscious content. Always different, always the same. Even if it may be tagged as easy listening or moody music with some reservation an emotionally churned-up, twisted perception is always hidden inside the fabric. At some point Brett, and Eddie decided to foray into a bit different compartment by beginning create music under the name CLOUDWARMER. By my opinion, the decision of them was to incorporate new stylistic elements to the blend – for instance, one can hear even some frenetic (experimental) rock/noise rock/No Wave knots/guitar juxtaposition to be resolved into nonexistence and nonsense in a good sense. Oh yeah, heaven knows we will be dust. In a word, it is an awesome whole of 75 tracks being strikingly rare by its quality, intent and singularity.

Mikael Delta – Elation (2019)

Comment: this bunch of 12 tracks is something which can be entitled as a threnody to classical experimental techno and intelligent dance music and post-krautrock acts which had been operating with different patterns in rhythm and composition in the Ruhr valley at the end of the 90s and the first half of the 00s. Kreidler, Mouse On Mars, To Rococo Rot, Schneider TM etc, all those groups whose members' subconsciousness was obviously imbued with the legacy of Neu!, Faust, CAN, and Kraftwerk yet on the other side their very own time and space happened to be some decades later at a further point of development and understanding in experimental sound. Mikael Delta is an experienced musician from Greece who adds even more lushness based on vowel sounds and atmospheric upper tones to be juxtaposed with Teutonic rigidity and iterative machinery. The fabulous effort is a part of Inner Ear Records.

Ataque Escampe – A alma (2019)

Comment: Ataque Escampe comes out of the region of Galicia, Spain being physically and culturally nearby Portugal and Portuguese, respectively. My first meeting with the combo did happen through an imprint, Aregueifa which purpose was to promote music from the aforementioned region. Since then, a decade on, quite much has been changed in the sonic palette of the combo. From an alt/indie folk template into a quirky pop touch like the recent one happens to be. This handful of compositions starts off with an evergreen cinematic touch which then goes on churned-up guitar/noise pop convolutions to ultimately progress into an artsy scope, more profoundly, showcasing hints at spacious dub and exquisite kraut and experimental rock explorations on space and soul (indeed, the word "Alma" used to be translated as soul). One can hear bright guitar hooks and elaborated guitar electricity and transcendental echoes and effects wrapping up the rhythmic backbone. Additionally, one can hear either some sort of outlaw vibe in the vein of spaghetti western or ennobling anxiety in singing and aching and shrieking and intoning as if coming out of Outer Space – from our lovely Outer Space. That's simply amazing. Very pro by any means due to all the aforementioned elements are seamlessly integrated and spiced up. One of the best releases in 2019. Perfecto.

Aboombong – AGNOSIS (2019)

Comment: this batch consists of 3 tracks of different longitudes from a 21-minute one to a 10-minute and an 8-minute one. Aboombong is a project by a mystical musician J.C Thorne who is also related to such combos as Psychic Enemies Network, ¡para!helion, The Jonny Cats and Anxiety of Silence and some other groups one could find out on Pen & Mallet site. Musically aboombong is the most prominent project of him having based on mystical droning, ethnic drumming and skewed ambient progressions. However, many other stylistic elements can be found from there. Similarly to the previous ones AGNOSIS is an astounding issue by playing on iterative hypnotic rhythms of ethnic and kraut-induced motorik which are interspersed with exquisite electronics, high octave singing relied on sole and multiple voices and spatial vowel layers. One of the spans is filled in with airy progressing piano chords which ultimately develop into an immersive cathedral drone which is also suitable for listening in Christmas time. Indeed, the predominant milieu is solemn and epic as if have spent time in an old, weary cathedral (it adds some awe and a bit ghastly feeling to the mix). Top notch in 2019 and other times. No doubt about the fact at all.

Memorymusic – Up (2019)

Comment: this patch of 5 tracks is composed and arranged by a guy known behind nom de plume Memorymusic – keyboards, production; Ujstin Echno – electronics, album artwork; and Tommy Carroll – drum set being released on Pan Y Rosas Discos, an imprint from Chicago, Illinois, USA of which purpose has been over the years to promote cutting-edge music of jazz, improvised music, experimental rock, electronic music and synergistic crisscrossing between them. By adding to it a conceptual measure frequently, as in the recent case, more profoundly, memory and relentless passing of time and permanent changing, it adds some kind of extraneous theoretical dimension to music or just keep amplifying it in an unusual way. An album is something one can listen to at any time the outing is always physically over there yet one's perceptions may change (remarkably) over the years. However, emotive elements within it do work as steady anchors by letting threads in one's memory even if you later would forget about technical minutiae of the album – some sort of polyphonic and modal music by each of them starting alone and then growing stepwise together and into a seamless one. Lonely bouncing piano chords, scruffy drumming, faint electronic accents and dusty keyboard strands used come together sometime, I mean being decelerated by playing music in a laid-back and thoughtful manner. Reminds of a little bit Tortoise but having premiered in a more academic manner.

The Jerusalem Mules – Pulling Out of the World (2019)

Comment: it is obviously one of the most austere releases I have heard so far under an immersive imprint, Death Roots Syndicate. The group consists of Matt Borczon, and Steve Brown who together play old time music with raw punk energy. A navy sailor cigarbox guitar and a cookie tin banjo used to conjure up rotely running tunes emitting a highly blank glimpse coming out of the eyes of the players. As if a slave playing in front of other enslaved ones at those few idle moments. There is no the aforementioned raw punk energy in direct sense though on the other side it is certainly something about blues as a musical style and tradition has handed down its tortured ideological tradition and tough standpoints to a subsequent contemporary artist. Thorough simplicity and the feeling of transience. As if a reflection of people being trampled down by unrighteous ones but ready to stand up again and again. Nice.

Caustic Reverie – Splinter (2019)

Comment: Bryn Schurman aka Caustic Reverie has been active for a little bit more than the decade while creating a pair of albums per year. Aesthetically he has been following his own (dark) star (as we all do more or less successfully), and the formula of his music is to create possibly profound, ghost-filled ambiances with the aid of few sounds and some reverberation applications to be pushed through it. In most cases, the listener hears remote sounds imbued with rusty noises, watery echoes, hollow and faintly feedback-trodden drones and some other sounds which may as well be imaginative to appear in one's head because alternately silence-nigh moments and trickling and vibrant microscopic noises come in and go out or just slip away along more or less subliminal lines and twisted orbits. It is like a sonic counterpart to behaviour of primordial Buddhist being ferocious for raw meat while searching for personal integrity through extreme exercises and transcendence allowing mantras. Profound stuff indeed.

Bleak House – Outwardly (2019)

Comment: it is always being the privilege to explore the discography of a Chicago-based imprint, Pan Y Rosas Discos, the imprint of multifaceted music. This time the British trio Bleak House (the members of it are involved in Keshco, a represented and praised group at RMH) blesses the listener with a 13-notch issue either imbued with watery smooth piano shapes full of hypnotic iterations with the aid of varied discreet electronic music and beguiling orchestrations or improvising on hoarse yet artsy guitar chords which also have been managed to establish round orbits in one's perception. However, the abovementioned elements and details make up lots of different combinations in balance and intensity inclined variations throughout the pace. Alternately the instruments get along well, it seems to be even complementary to swap an instrument for the other one. By listening to either guitar or piano playing one can hear profound serpentine layers of the echo flickering relentlessly behind playful chords. Additionally, those repetitive chords have been set up and bridged with one another in the way to ultimately result in brilliant flashes of the music. In other words, the formative side is saturated with the emotive side. For instance, enjoy a track called Repaired Swing Set. All in all, it is one of the most enchanting releases I have heard during this year. And the issue is a good example of recommendation how the energy of a human being should creatively be transformed for. There can be drawn disparate parallels upon the artists, from kindred souls like Hauschka, Max Richter and Lubomyr Melnyk to chamber rock/post-rock acts like A Silver Mt. Zion to vagabonds like John Fahey, and Vic Chesnutt to post-progressive acts like Penguin Cafe Orchestra.

Kryshe – Continuum (2019)

Comment: Kryshe's 10-notch whole is a marvellous insight into those remote areas of pop music where tenderness and subtlety used to prevail in an artsy way like it happened to Talk Talk and David Sylvian after their temporary stints with synth-pop. The listener hears spatial flutes and silent whiffs of woodwinds and elliptically rounded piano improvisations and minimal electronics and a small scale of glockenspiel-based orchestrations to cheer you up with some more space, gentle breeze and bittersweet hope. From minor intimate glass bead plays to more large scale compositions to bring forth a dynamical drift. This great work is a part of the discography of Serein.

Elizabeth Joan Kelly – Farewell, Doomed Planet! (2019)

Comment: it is nice to hear Joan Elisabeth Kelly's sonic experiments and poppy expressions at full sway. Undoubtedly it is a blissful, groovy and heady view on pop music at its best sense. Since the times back in the beginning of the 10s with the onset of such genres as chillwave and witch house the status of ambient music has been changed from the so-called design music to a subject for more melody and harmony-trodden endeavours even if the main theme was dark. Yeah, this 11-track outing hits the way cruising somewhere between profound ambient and more recognised, more comfortable themes. In its most ultimate potentiality – the listener can perceive it during some spans of a few seconds – it could have been ended at a nightmarish threshold over which line unsound fantasies come into one's mind. The aforementioned comfortable themes are all but cheap, self-indulgent ones because they do have intrinsic potentiality for transgressive, ominous mutations. Given the topic of the album it refers also to the doings by a human being both individually and collectively – we have potentiality to build up something beautiful and on the other side we can all screw up. It is full of determined noises, intriguing dynamic rhythms and vivid sonic effects which together make up an irresistible punch of sonic waves. For instance, listen to a track, the favourite of mine, Harm, by giving contemplation about a time to come when such a sort of song would hit the charts.

Lately Kind Of Yeah – Two Shades Of Apart (2006/2019)

Comment: this set of 14 tracks is just a fine dedication to guitar playing but nothing else by employing different techniques, timbres and colours. A listener can hear feverish chord changes, dynamic arpeggios, and arousing strumming here and there. At times the guitar seems to be "tortured" on prepared setups and arrangements full of slamming noises, elliptic sonic effects, electro-acoustic shrieks, warped chords and majestic wall of sounds. It is mostly all about the technical possibilities one could get out of the instrument. That also can be tagged as non-guitar music because its intention is to go far away from a weary imagination through phantasms, interruptions, filters, deviations. But not only. Beyond that melodic progressions and silent incantations used to surface in the middle of the tumult by balancing the result. Indeed, at times it chimes like a lighter version of Glenn Branca or Sonic Youth. For sure, emotive side is strong enough on it because it contains the earliest experiments by the artist then aged 15-16 years old only. Very accepted to waft the upstream of an ordinary guitar template; the album is being released on Vulpiano. 

Hypnodial – Sub (2019)

Comment: this issue consists of a pair of long, 27-minute, compositions, the first of them is the original and the second is a mix version of it. The original one is an ennobling blend of synthesized effects and a theme progression which a little reminds of Angelo Badalamenti's lead theme of Twin Peaks. But then now, all of that slowly and unremarkably fades away and will be traded for a solemn cathedral organ being backed up by raindrops which keep falling on your face. And then hushed industrial shrieks, amplified hisses, minimal vibrations, natural sounds (rain, sea waves) and a reverberant rhythmic pace are mixed up with each other to result in a sultry ambient composition which may resemble a sonic and imaginative jungle similar to one depicted by Estonian musician and globetrotter Tont. This sort of music I would like to tag “New-New Age” or “Meta-Dub”. Or it is a sort of ambient music which leaves behind abstract patterns to come over into the heart of a listener. It is really pleasant to hear such a thick, analogue-alike processing of sounds. The mix called Surface Mix is a bit dissimilar due to reconfiguration in sonic elements and some differently accentuated layers. However, similarly to the main track it is at least as powerful and suggestive and thereof convincing to my ears. In a word, it is a great issue for relaxing and stimulating one's brain. All the donations the Palma, Spain-based artist gets go to the support of Coral Reef Alliance. The issue is a part of the discography of Somniscope.

Comment: the Dutchman Ludo Maas is back again with his brand new album, similarly to his previous ones the 12-track outing straddles on an interface of guitar jangles and twitches, crispy electronic beats and variegated keyboards for creating melodies and blossoming orchestrations and implementing cute harmonies at low and high-ends of the breathing sonic spectrum. Sometimes the soundscape is imbued with spoken word spans, one of them poignantly reflecting upon the problem of the overpopulation of cities and in overall all around the world that is the biggest problem of nowadays of not only defending Earth and other species but also the very ethical stance to live as responsible human beings. It is at least partly inflicted by the fact the people used to live like pigs their snouts deeply stuck in the mud by taking no profound incantation about outer space and not perceiving seamless, imperative connection between this small yet important locus and tremendous cosmic village called Universe (it is much bigger than one same titled movie company could be resulted in its all possibilities I dare to say). How could we influence the course? On the base of the so-called democratic elections? No way, it is hijacked by the union of the politicians and businessmen for a century at least (they cannot be reversed from talking about GDP and economic growth) so to influence Earth and one's health for good could only be done on the grass root level, the smaller society/community is the better it is. At the final instance everybody's personal decisions make up the greatest impact. Otherwise the natural vengeance will be taken on us. Ludo Maas is celebrating with this decent (fourth) album his 20th anniversary as a musician, as a modest dweller by having been perfecting his ennobling trace (other projects: Legion of Spunky (with Mike "Stikewang" Steelman) and Background Radiation (with Tim Dwyer)).

Masayuki Imanishi – Worn Tape (2019)

Comment: in fact, what reasonable to say about this 11-track outing by a Japanese experimental artist? It chimes like your worn home machines were in connection with contact microphones and thereafter those thin, bleak sounds coming out of them were powerfully amplified and recorded. Lots of unstable levels in electricity and voltage, lots of mechanical deviations and industrial spectres are represented over there. No waste of surrounding sounds to be implemented into a miserable everyday's glimpse of a nowadays human being. No intimate community, no close society, just living in an over-regulated and dully systematised existence with silently shrieking machines in the middle of the blocks, waste and cerebral and physical decline called the city (the so-called civilization). Let`s feel more physical hunger for as much as possible to purify and saturate your senses (at the same time as a main measure to avoiding intoxication/diminish contamination of physical, physiological and mental environment). Similarly to this outing (a piece in the discography of Moving Furniture Records) which does nothing to say just reflecting upon something repulsive and unpleasant.

Martin Rach – Of Dust And Water (2019)

Comment: for me, Martin Rach is the most predominant experimental musician from Lithuania, he is prolific, he is consistent and obsessive in his doings. Even if he may have been searching for bordelines and extended areas but it is the case of experimental music since progressive and krautrock but reached its apotheosis through the post-punk movement. On the other side, some new experimental music threads came through jazz, more notably thanks to Sun Ra, the Coltranes, and Miles Davis (of course). In some sense, it is a lost album of John Coltrane (produced by a contemporary experimental electronic music producer) because this 6-notch outing is imbued with cacophonic, jerky saxophone progressions as if played on an unstable, a bit ruined effect block. Those saxophone modalities are surrounded by ambient, faint electro-acoustic reverberations and slightly noisy pads by giving it an arousing yet coherent touch. Very pro album being issued by the artist himself at Bandcamp.
