Cinema Noir – Fernweh (2015)

  • Post-rock
  • Alternative rock
  • Epic
  • Electronic music
  • Indie rock
  • Indietronica
  • Remix

Comment: I am back again at the discography of Nostress Records though it is the first step of mine to Cinema Noir, a combo from Palermo, Sicily, Italy. Allegedly this 6-notch issue is their first step (partly) into electronic music. More profoundly, it includes majestic and blissful progressions through guitar buildups and synthesizer-based clouds, respectively. Indeed, the listener gets wrapped up in hazy, hiss soaked clouds and sublime dynamics of sonic abysses filled in with unknown surreal creatures because it chimes so beautifully and blissfully. Its beatific touch does have a remarkably more tremendous impact in comparison to every day's life. If you get stricken by the Sun then you may experience a similar feel. Frequently it reminds of a Mogwai's turn into electronic music (at Happy Songs for Happy People) though Cinema Noir's turn seems to be more overwhelming and crucial both mentally and physically. For example, listen to a track called Miles Davis, the most irresistible composition over there. You can hear many themes and progressions of running simultaneously in one and the same track. At Persepolis the music turns into something to get its power from the roots of minimalism. It chimes as if a post-rock track being produced by Steve Reich. There is up one track being remixed by another Italian combo Veivecura. In a nutshell, it is a sonic leviathan which must be heard.

Comment: a Finnish musician behind nom de plume Thuoom is back again with his brand new one. His last three or four albums (most of them had been issued in 2016) were quite abstract ones as if recorded with the onyx-tinged needle and cartridge. Fokus resembles more his earlier records at the end of the 00s where he did employ instruments and non-instruments colourfully to set out his aesthetical pieces of cake. In fact, it is a platform wherein much used to happen throughout the course due it seems to be cursed. I am wondering by myself is it either improvised music or determined sound. The term "Fokus" should be related to the last one though you cannot be thoroughly sure because playfulness is an essential part of the 12-track issue. And that's very pro. More profoundly, microscopic schemes are set up to constitute a macroscopic sonic universe and therefore revealing a perfect circuit as the whole. The butter between the parts to be functionally fulfilled ultimately is the aforementioned curse. Or magic. Or witchcraft. Furthermore, Thuoom as an artist represents the idea that all the kinds of sound are music or at least all these sounds could be morphed into music. From inferior crackles, signal-alike humming and cut-up vowels to wondrous droning and elliptically shaped electronic grandeur and techno pulsations at the most minimal extent. It can be considered as a next level within the so-called forest folk scene. On the other side, you can perceive similarities with another Finnish masterminds like Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen. Get it and try to crack the core of this gem.

Moses Luster – The Pre-Apocalypse Years (2011-2015) (2017)

  • Singer-songwriter
  • Art pop
  • Film noir
  • Alternative pop

Comment: it can be said without reservations the LA-based artist Moses Luster is on a full sway on this 15-track outing even though these tracks as residual ones did not appear on his previous issues. In fact, all the Moses Luster's albums released so far are being on full sway. He is being an artist who has made up dirty locals and murky human characteristics so elegantly irresistible through his expressive singing and tough man attitude. Indeed, you can perceive his ambition to change other persons' lifes (I'm the Lion). Sorrow and desperation are his arms to convey hope rather than a burden from every day's life to kill you slowly and painfully. He conveys hope through sorrow, blood, sweat being immersed in tight cigarette smoke and whiskey smell. Some filthy secrets add an extra flavour to the whole. And if you don't like it yet you are going to love it. But not only these facets are represented over there. Shadows Of A Past To talks about the relativity of time, in fact about the question of whether does time exist or not. But some things are not going to change ever, for example the whiskey and the need for it. At times it chimes kinda modern Gospel music (at The Past Is No Place For A Man, for instance). His compelling baritone is backed up by soaring orchestrated sounds, synthetic chords, lonely piano keys wherefrom cinematic swallows emerge to draw epic lines in front of the horizon. Top tier.

Luis Marte / Poltamento – Movil/Inmovil (2017)

  • Modern classical
  • Alternative
  • Electronic music
  • Jazz
  • Crossover
  • Improvised music

Comment: a Steinway grand piano meets electronic software setups on Movil/Inmovil, the collaboration between the Chile and Argentina-based artists Luis Marte, and Roger Delahaye aka Poltamento, respectively. A huge, real instrument meets a virtual, physically nonexistent one. Yet strangely they do meet each other without any complications. The piano chords are predominant leading this subtle 5-track course being accompanied by volatile electronic bubbling, reverberant glitches and the breakable space between these compartments. Call it an instance of a drift between modern classical sensitivity and a (cool) jazz music formation. Given that electronic music is an essential part of modern classical music anyway. Pueblo Nuevo, a Chilean imprint proves with it to have an important place in the world of a thousands of record labels.
