Edge of October – Collapse (2008)

/Dark ambient, Minimalism, Avant-garde, Dystopbient, Experimentalism, Conceptual, Drone, Neoclassical, Post-industrial, Space music/

Comment: Jeff Zvorak aka Edge of October`s 7-piece issue is motivated due to his bad mental condition which is clearly audible in these compositions. It is thoroughly dark, creepy, and stalking produced to document different phases of the course of the disease of him. Furthermore, it is a honest issue by its possible premise to help other people as well who are suffering from depression (of course, it is not the first album being presented as a medicine - for instance, I can remember for Spiritualized`s Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Flaoting In Space, 1997, Dedicated). I shall have to confess that music helps finely against the disease – paradoxically dark-hued music does have the most effective power to realize it. More profoundly, subdued atmospheric drone progressions used to permeate through the soundscape which in turn consists of some metallic clatters, barely audible murmurs, pitch-shifted effects in the middle of templates, some reflections of concrete music all of that being wrapped up in impenetrable, sinister vapour. At times the aforementioned fogginess has been managed to an extent that Zvorak`s soundscape could be considered an example of space music (for instance, Iatrogenesis; Resurrecting Old Ghosts). Ultimately I have to concede it is both emotionally and artistically an eminent issue.

Third Mind Movement - Ups and Downs (2015)

/Krautrock, Experimentalism, Electronic, Plunderphonics, Art rock, Avant-garde, Experimental rock, Improvised music, Free jazz, Psychedelic, Freeformfreakout, Avant-rock, Sampledelic, Dada music/

Comment: Ups and Downs is the follow-up to Cardboard Rebellion (2015) by the Russian combo Third Mind Movement regarding a similar ideological and aesthetical approach. The issue consists of 4 lengthy compositions which used to be highly fragmented by having dodges in different directions from free form based rock and free jazz and motorik krautrock propulsions to old sample based snippets and uncanny overdriven sonic templates and gravitation-free psychedelic madness. Ultimately it could be admitted the intention of the issue is to reshuffle the consciousness of the listener by sequencing and crossing logical and illogical elements with one another. By exploring the roster of Third Mind Movement you can discover some weird names within the 9-bar list. For instance, you can find such names as Arsenic Strychnine, Dima Noise, Nikita Overstillwater etc. Hopefully, these 40 minutes represented over there are not an effect of hangover after an intake of strychnine. It is a bewitching result by any means. The release is a part of the experimental/dada/avant-garde imprint suRRIsm-Phonoethics.

SoulSonic - Things That Connect Us (2013)

/Indie rock, Post-punk, Electro-indie, Alternative pop, Ambient rock, Post-rock, Shoegazetronica, Mood music, Ethereal wave/

Comment: SoulSonic is an artist from Lithuania whose 10-bar issue is a blend of picturesque guitar paintings, crispy electronic rhythms and beatific orchestrations. It can be said SoulSonic`s music is more about to create affective milieu rather than revealing intention to establish something artistically groundbreaking. Indeed, the whole sounds like a smooth jazz/fusion version produced with guitars and electronics. It seems the artist`s goal is to reach a sublime state of mind throughout the course rather than having spot on particular sonic inventions. However, despite there are up hints to almost all styles being connected to “alternative music” throughout the last four decades. The favourite of mine is Gentle Touch due to the spaced-out, longing guitar chord based extensions and highly catchy pattern within it. By continuing the Lithuanian connection I recommend listen to such combos as Picturesque Episodes, and mmpsuf.
