Rat Faced Boy - Lonesome Road (2012)
9.2
/IDM, Electro pop, Experimental electronica, Acid, Poptronica, Alternative dance/
Comment: Rat Faced Boy is the nome de plume for the mancunian Mike Walters who is being also known as Acidburp. However, this handful of pieces used to stylistically extend over different kinds of electronica, more concretely, from cartoonish IDM-esque rhythmic mazes and slightly growling electro drones to more careless, chirpy electronic pop and acidic glosstronica. Rivet City and elegantly psychedelic eponymous track are just superb ones.
Abacom System feat. Qumram - Home (2012)
9.2
/Electronic pop, Experimental electronica, Ambient techno, Trance pop, Electro pop/
Comment: these 7 instrumental tracks spreaded out over 29 minutes are driven by tickling bass sequences having either its divergent variegations or providing the base for more ethereal layers above it. Rome, Italy-based resident Stefano Mascaro`s collaboration with Qumram sounds somewhere in between techno, electro/and trance and electronic pop and some infiltrations on the base of it, however, full of dynamics, energy and full-fledged bounces.
Vinyl Williams - Naked Sanctuary (2010)
9.7
/Shoegaze, Space rock, Avant-rock, Psychedelia, Ambient, Experimental rock, Dream pop/
Comment: undoubtedly Los Angeles resident Vinyl Williams` album Lemniscate was one of the most fabulous pop examples in 2012. The world famous film composer John Williams` grandson combined sultry indie/shoegaze templates with electronic beats wrapped up in purple, stroboscope-induced light shafts. However, a predecessor of it, Naked Sanctuary, was a more orthodox issue in a guitar-driven sense. On the other side, this handful of pieces was undoubtedly a synthetic release, filled with spaced-out vocal hum and dazzling guitar noises which in turn are composed of overdriving chords and graceful key changes. In general, it is a seamless drift between knee-deep (neo)psychedelic propulsions and majestic, horizon-catched guitar pop. However, instrumental track Spiral Galaxy could be considered the exception on it with regard to clear-cut ambient developments with hints at some electro-acoustic clicks and cuts. You can be sure Vinyl Williams is still in motion.
Adam Balbo - The Jester (2012)
8.9
/Singer-songwriter, Alt-folk, Folk indie, Punk folk/
Comment: Adam Balbo is a singer-songwriter from Indiana, USA whose recent, short-running album (less than a half hour in total) used to entice the listener with an entertaining set of 9 folk (and punk-influenced?)-tinged ditties. Indeed, it is a half hour of burbly key and tempo changes, cymbals-backed washes and Balbo`s jaunty vocal sprawling carelessly over all of it. And there is a permanent rush for catchy harmonies and melodies throughout the course. On the other side, Do What You Do is a tad bit yearning composition which hooked me the most. By the way, if to follow Bandcamp-based logic The Jester is Balbo`s 10th album (the first album Nothing In Particular harks back to the year of 2001). In a word, he can be considered an expert singer-songwriter who does have his own individuality and touch.
