Bryyn – Tend My Sheep (2017)

  • Indie folk
  • Alt-folk
  • Electronic
  • Americana
  • Art pop/rock
  • Folktronica
  • Folk indie
  • Singer-songwriter
  • Dream folk
  • Art folk

Comment: Tend My Sheep is a second part of the twin issue with In Hiding by the Chicago, Illinois, US-based songwriter Bryyn who has been active since the end of the previous decade. Similarly to In Hiding it embraces cloudless dreams through volatile and dynamic folk progressions yet the difference is sporadically based on more rough and art pop/rock-oriented dodges (and many greyish tones between the styles). Furthermore, it involves more naked (i.e set apart from the rest of particular tracks) and rough electronic developments which seemed to be more integrated on the twin issue. Yet it is not an adverse (i.e disintegrated in the sense of losing its cohesion) aspect by evaluating the issue. Wig on His Head is apparently the most prominent example of how electronic and atmospheric appearances will stepwise take over the course within a track. Bryn Martin shows up his mastermind to have created another gem. It`s deep and entertaining at the same time. Lord have mercy on me as he used to sing at You Are Alive. Indeed, one can agree with him.

Brother Saturn – I Am A Ghost (2017)

  • Ambient
  • Avant-rock
  • Experimental rock
  • Sound poetry
  • Soundscape
  • Electronic music
  • Space music
  • Kosmische Musik
  • Dreamwave
  • Alternative

Comment: Drew Miller aka Brother Saturn has created a thread of fabulous albums over the years. Miller has done it with his guitars and electronic devices which have chimed like a dreamy move over imaginable terrains. I Am A Ghost is different yet still the same. You can hear those extended chords and undulating drones at different speeds searching for a space rocket to start it up with lucid dreams and previously inexperienced transcendental beauty. Even if you have heard something like that by him before it still will seduce one's senses. On the other side, I can hear more crispy sounds within the 10-notch album with regard to the rhythms and chord progressions. There are represented pitched-up whistling noises within some chords and glitched-out cadences. That's wondrous and otherworldly. And there is up one enchanting spoken word track. It is not surprising at all – the space rocket has already reached the distance a millions of miles away from Earth. One of the best glimpses from the year of 2017.

Must Wave – Suffocation (2017)

  • Hardstep
  • Electronic music
  • Rave music
  • Dance music

Comment: this set of 6 tracks is a profound blend of rough rhythms and piercing synths. As if a drift between the rave culture induced dance music and more industrially influenced electro sounds. On the other side, in principle, it can say the whole chimes like a huge composition with minimal variegations here and there. Only the beginning of a track called Flaw is a bit different due to being atmospheric and volatile which later will be mixed up with heavily stomping beats. In a word, let`s find out those differences from this set. The issue is a part of the discography of MNMN Records.

d'incise – Appalachian Anatolia (14th century) (2016)

  • Improvised music
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Art music
  • Conceptual

Comment: by theoretical side, this issue is interesting to quest. What does it mean Appalachian Anatolia and how it harks back to the 14th century? And how it is relevant today? Furthermore, it consists of one, prolonged track played on guitar by Clara de Asis yet being modified by the Swiss electronic musician d'incise. If I had understood it in a proper way it can considered a collaborative issue though being collaborated separately. A second way to understand it is that d`incise modified the composition for electric guitar beforehand and de Asis played it. In fact, by reading a d`incise`s interview it can be assumed the second version is right. Musically it is a lengthy, 41-minute composition based on guitar induced progressions and discontinuations (which does mean silent spans in between). Yet silence is an invisible conversation as declaimed Malcolm Mooney in a song of CAN. It is also about arousing and fading, about being and no existence and tight relation between the two. The effect of such a sort of production is strongly purgative as if getting small devils out of your tortured soul (because the world around us seems to be sick in the way as it has never been before). Human being as a stupid animal rejects God and thinks of himself/herself that he/she is a God instead but the result is pitiful. All the time the same jokes, all the time the same mistakes? No no. In fact, these mistakes used to become even worse in time. Miserable. Give up life as a bad mistake. The release is a part of the discography of INSUB., previously known as Insubordinations, an imprint to have represented improvised music.

CRPTC – Peaks (2017)

  • Ambient pop
  • Tech-house
  • Deep house
  • IDM
  • Electronic music
  • Indietronica

Comment: club dance/club music-oriented rhythms are mixed up with smooth melodies/harmonies and appealing electronic progressions. More concretely, the listener can partake in two different realms running in parallel way at the same time. Firstly, how the ending result used to constitute ultimately over the four track course and secondly, one can track down the process in its playful details. From atmospheric tech-house and deep house to elegant ambient pop/IDM/indie electronic tinged flickers. The issue is a part of the discography of Italian Ephedrina Records.

Number Eleven – Strict (2017)

  • Experimental techno
  • Avant-techno
  • Electronic music

Comment: the young Lithuanian artist Number Eleven continues to trudge across the path of his experimental techno imbued with spiky beats and spacious pads. There are up no less than 11 compositions being released on Electron Emitter, the imprint being led by the musician himself. A myriad of different rhythmic patterns, microscopic changes, shuffled rhythms, murky drones beneath the upper layers, however, one can perceive festive but dark melodic progressions here and there therefore giving it a singular touch. So open your ears and mind before to start listening to it. It requests your attention to the most extreme to get partaken in this frantic quest for new sonic alchemy. Ultimately you can admit it is a solid sequel to Number Eleven's previous one Autism.

Erik Mowinckel – Drift EP (2017)

  • Ambient pop
  • Shoegazetronica
  • Electronic music
  • Dreamwave
  • Alternative

Comment: by watching the cover print of this handful of tracks it gets very clear about the intention of this album. The goal of the artist is to conjure up the most lucid imaginations creatively possible. In a tight sense, it is ambient pop being influenced by shoegaze-y impulses. Indeed, it is all about sonic ebbs and tides, how sonic beauty used to appear and fade away. Indeed, the listener may hear sea waves running alongside the coastal line. At times it seems to be even way too transparent and effortless and because of that excluding possible counterpoint of it. So you can find no tension sources from it. Maybe it is good, it might be bad in some sense. The release is a part of the discography of Giant Manilow.

  • Industrial rock
  • Ska punk

Comment: this set of 26 tracks clocking in at a 90 minute is a great miscellany to reflect upon the quality of the region's music. The tremendous part consists of bands coming from Russia but some groups come from Lithuania, Ukraine, Poland, the Czech Republic and from some other countries. Secondly, the guitar music does not mean only some sort of strings but also the drums and different sort of keyboards most of them legendary Soviet synths like Polivoks. On the other side, the main accent is on guitars like Tonika, Musima, Jolana which were derivatives of the US-based crafty hardware. There are up enough tracks which do have more similarities with synth-pop and electro pop than die-hard classic rock. However, through the tremendous part of Russian bands there are also represented tracks reflecting upon the so-called Vyssotski's songwriting. And there is also up post-punk in the style of a rough, even experimental Kino. Xmas has already passed by there is a hint at it either. Let's listen to it. The favourite track of mine? I may be Photon's Discobolus, an astounding mix of cellophane tinged jangle pop and moderate dance vibes. It may be Superstruny's Cziestnaja Igra, an alternative rock example gravitating frantically toward psychedelic idols. The solid miscellany is compiled by the Polish Bonimedia led by Emil Bonifaczuk.

  • Electronic music
  • Alternative
  • Electro pop
  • Kraut-electro
  • IDM
  • Dub techno
  • Techno pop
  • Kraut-techno

Comment: this set of 6 compositions embraces such titles as Dolphin, Jellyfish, White Whale, Lobster, Penguin, and Squid. Given that the title of the issue is Kaspar Nemo which does sound very close to captain Nemo. So what consequence could we extract from it? Is it the marine release? Is it thoroughly sea-green by its tonality? I have no competence to assume it but I think of it as a bloody catchy issue where all the aspects, the configuration of the whole is craftily set up yet stylistic scope of the whole is amusingly broad – from mellifluous spacey synth journeys and puckish IDM to elegant full-fledged electro pop/techno pop/kraut and elliptical dub techno frequencies. The outing is a part of the discography of Cota303.

Thierry Massard – A EN TIO (2012)

  • Drone
  • Old school industrial
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Leftfield
  • Microtonal
  • Abstract
  • Electronic music
  • Non-music
  • Psycho-acoustic

Comment: I guess I made first acquaintance with the Frenchman Thierry Massard in 2009 while I started with the blog. It was a merry time within the blogosphere in general, including those blogs dedicated to free music mavericks. I can remember for a couple of blogs by him, one of them having spot on the nature and personality of artists through a fixed questionnaire. Later on, I discovered him as a musician who recorded his first music already at the end of the 70s (his birth year is 1959). I recommend reading my interview with him where he had shed light upon his doings and intentions behind his musical deeds. At A EN TIO he continues his initial impulse through the creation of abstract, austere soundscapes based on rough drones and abrasive yet restrained electronic music. Although it was issued 5 years ago it can be considered a pure instance of the old school industrial movement. I am always thrilled while listening to such sort of sound. It chimes in a very authentic way having clearly no rivalled counterparts from today. I guess this 3-notch release is also recorded with the same equipment he had been doing approximately 4 decades ago. It is a part of the discography of the Portuguese imprint Editora do Porto.

Bryyn – In Hiding (2017)

  • Indie folk
  • Alt-folk
  • Folk indie
  • Americana
  • Singer-songwriter

Comment: in recent days Chicago, Illinois, US-based artist Bryn Martin aka Bryyn (also being known as the frontman of Pinkle and the Polygons) issued a couple of albums. In Hiding is a crystal clear folk album which gets inspiration from the best sources of an American music history and tradition. It is not the first album by him. Vice versa, he has been a highly prolific artist during the last decade for cheering us with more and less whimsical electronic tinged folk releases. As I said already it is a crystal clear issue yet it does not mean he does not employ electronic devices and effects for his own sake. All these instruments are up there to have been measured out just as optimally and poignantly as it is needed to conquer one's senses and heart. The listener can breathe in and out in a free manner because all the music seems to come directly from an effortless cloud, from liberated uncivilised terrains, from somewhere we used to subconsciously longing for. It is idyllic, it is rustic, it is picturesque. There can be drawn parallels upon such an artist as Sufjan Stevens yet it is not a serious objection to assume it as being one of the best issues in 2017. The outing is a bit of the immense platform of Jamendo.

K4mmerer – Pixeled (2016)

  • EDM
  • Electro pop
  • Electronic pop
  • Ambient pop
  • Dance pop
  • Post-disco
  • Hi-NRG

Comment: K4mmerer has been an unbelievably prolific artist since 2008 having released 36 issues on Jamendo. Pixeled is one of them amongst the whole drifting subtly between gentle ambient pop and more crispy electro pop and straightforward electronic dance music rhythms imbued with highly galvanized frequencies. Fortunately the listener can enjoy a more broad picture in comparison to the one described above so the result is multicoloured and effective ultimately. It makes highly sense. Mostly it is instrumental, at times the artist exploits found sounds (indeed, birds are chirping). It is a balanced drift between your dream centred sensations and body related impulses. I truly feel myself fascinated by those sublime jazzy progressions and irresistibly dreamy synthesised chords being followed by the aggressive beats at Faulty. In a word, it is a post disco album in the pre apocalyptic world. Given that it is an instance of prefix pop in a fascinating manner.

  • Experimental rock
  • Post-psychedelic electronica

Comment: this 12-track issue can be considered an example of improvised music but for sure it is way too wide umbrella to get into a more detailed contact with it. You can hear undetermined sounds from different angles full of effects and various timbres and differing intensities. From rough metallic clanging and burbling electronic noises and gloomy smouldering beneath the upper music layers to extended guitar riffs and explorations of the instrument`s inner life and refined electronic glass bead games to more light-hearted and exalting psychedelic ambient progressions which may sound downright poppy with regard to the first mentioned aspects. The issue will be finished in a very fine epic key with Blanche. In a word, it chimes like a witty barbaric sonic attack in the midst of polished pop music instances yet being enormously more intriguing and interesting. The enchanting issue is a part of the discography of such an infernal platform as Les Diks Qui Sautent. We don't forget it's hellish discography, we will back to it soon.

Comment: this 3-notch outing is a fine example of how field recording sounds are treated in a way to chime like coming from an eerie street. It gravitates toward a rail station which does mean one can hear metallic ghosts and at the same time epic industrial echoes which will result in the statement this music is uncannily beautiful and ennobling. And purgative by any means. It can be considered life around us we used to encounter every day, however, being strongly magnified and thereafter amplified. Most of us can recognise the charm of Minecraft, this 50 minutes and a bit more can be considered a counterpart of it in sounds in some sense. In some sense with certain reservations because East By Rail is less artificial because this sound art issue comes directly from an interface where life and observation and production are mixed up with one another. You can perceive rough sonic figures being juxtaposed to more fine sonic dimensions. Indeed, similarly to Minecraft it is highly playful which used to resonate with the surrounding sounds. While listening to it you should be aware of the fact which sound comes from the album and which one comes through a window or wall of your apartment. One of the most outstanding releases in 2017 coming from Prague, the Czech Republic.

Pasqualino Ubaldini – Mosaique (2017)

  • World music
  • Easy listening
  • Mood music
  • Latin music
  • Art music

Comment: Pasqualino Ubaldini is an artist and guitarist from Italy who has been releasing his music through Jamendo within the last decade (the guitar is not the only instrument he has been playing. One can hear bagpipes, woodwind instruments etc). Mosaique is a great issue due to both technical and moody aspects which in fact are tightly related to one another. One can encounter arpeggios which make your soul either to soar or feel bittersweet melancholy. However, the latter makes your soul to be filled with lofty feels as well. Ubaldini's script reminds a bit of the one of Simon Jeffres, the leader of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra regardless is it related to world music vibes or not. Indeed, it is highly playful and relaxing. Despite its carnival-alike touch you can feel the sophisticated arrangements behind it. These 37 minutes are truly great delight to enjoy it once, twice and now and then. You hear it as if watching it through an omnipotent kaleidoscope. So yeah, I have experienced synaesthetic impulses while listening to this set of 9 tracks. It will be a notch in the list of the best albums of 2017 at Recent Music Heroes.

Bongley Dead – Undici (2017)

  • Indie rock
  • Alternative rock
  • Glam rock

Comment: Bongley Dead, an Italian combo is back with their brand new one which can be considered a pure revelry and joy. In comparison to their previous outing 4 (2015) it abandoned post-grunge-y smooth mannerisms and reveals its dedication into galvanised, cellophane tinged guitars. Yet through this powerful guitar fuzz one can hear an enchanting glam rock thread which is the lead motif for this 17-notch issue. So let's switch on the electricity and the show is going on. By indirect influences one can hear such combos as Placebo, and Smashing Pumpkins. As I already said indirectly. Solid release indeed.

Erebus Redemption – A Pawn of Darkness (2012)

  • Death metal
  • Brutal metal
  • Extreme metal
  • Electronic
  • Lo-fi
  • Cybermetal

Comment: this set of 12 tracks is as abrasive as an exceptional outing in the roster of Sirona-records used to be. It is overwhelming and suffocating in its excessively powerful leaps and mad steps. Mostly it is death metal with some exceptions into muddy, lo-fi electronic music. The ambience around the listener gets razed and destroyed so think twice if you would like to get into a dirty manifesto of power. It may push on your sinful mind and trigger some unintended emotions. And the cover print is great.

Ale – Seri-Al Rappers (2017)

  • Hip-hop
  • Rap
  • Urban music
  • Electronic music
  • Electro-hop
  • Grime

Comment: these 219 seconds do slam and jump up within playful electro-hop/grime beats by moving from right to left from atop downwards. It is the vivid backdrop to Italian lyrics being recited also in a playful manner. Although I have no idea what it is all about. The track is a part of the Italian imprint Yo! Netlabel. Highly appreciated.

VA – The Moon (2017)

  • Shoegaze
  • Ethereal wave
  • Dream pop
  • Alternative pop/rock
  • Indie pop/rock
  • Post-punk

Comment: I have always thought that a serious compilation should start with the teaser to give it a dynamic boost. Indeed, here it is Eternal Something's September chiming like Cocteaus on synths. As a record label entitles itself The Blog That Celebrates Itself you can be sure it comes out mainly with shoegaze inspired tracks full of purple tinged dreams, hazy beauty, colourful fantasies and psychedelic fringes. But not only this – you can hear also proto-shoegaze sounds the likes of harking back to Cocteau Twins, and Durutti Column. Indeed, all the modern ways bring back to the post-punk sound. By the way, there is represented one track coming very directly from the goth/post-punk breed and there are up a few exceptions additionally. One of those is a favourite of mine the track called Ethereal Love by Dead Serpent at utmost dreams. I would call it infinite darkgaze/ethereal wave. Additionally to the aforementioned artists there are represented such artists as Tropique Noir, Hazed, Bugjar, Pure Confusion, Street Bird, The Wagner Logic, Ikiryo, Strange Things, The Last Passenger, Elegant Dead Star, and European Ghost.
