Alan Rèvolte! – Libre y Salvaje (2016)

  • Singer-songwriter
  • Folk punk
  • Punk folk
  • Alt-folk
  • Mexicana

Comment: Alan Vargas aka Alan Rèvolte is a musician from Mexico whose 10-track issue is an attention-getting blend of Spanish-sung lyrics, intense acoustic guitar strums all of that predominantly being managed in a straightforward approach. The straightforward approach over there does mean it is played with great fervour and infectious Latin temperament though wherein one can discern many changes in chords and timbres and rhythms. Sometimes his guitar play involves more spacey patches with the slowed-down rhythm (at Réquiem para un Poeta). Here and there he used to employ female voices to add extra tones and moods to the mix. The final track La Marcha de los Árboles makes also difference because of exploiting immersive, and minor tones to accentuate his ability to embrace a more wide spectre (thereby reminding of such experimental folk acts as Ben Chasny`s Six Organs Of Admittance, Espers, and Akron/Family, and through aesthetic predecessor lineage the artists of the so-called American Primitivism, for instance). The cover print is cute and nice because of resonating with the substance of the music. There is no need to added the animal-based drawings in minimal mode used to make sense at any time. These solid 24 minutes are a part of the discography of Naciòn Libre, the Mexican imprint of which stylistic range is quite broad (from hardcore/punk to stoner and doom to cyberpunk and crust).

Syndrome WPW – American Gospel: 5 Songs (2017)

  • Electro pop
  • Alternative dance
  • Indietronica
  • Electronic pop
  • Acid pop
  • Robot pop
  • Dub
  • Comedy

Comment: this notch issue is a fair killer due to a sultry blend of electronic styles and an incisive touch of acidic beats and spaced-out debris and poignant humour. Could it be ever the best American gospel? I guess it could be though it is not the kind of American gospel in the usual sense of this word. It is not related to churches, black Americans, and high-spirited music. Stop! Wait! Yet it is high-spirited, it also involves some dub(step) and suggestive reggae vibes all of that tightly revolving around the slightly veiled melodic progression. In fact, it is all about Heartwork, the central track within the album. It is a great success and deserves to have a chart place in an ideal world. Aces High, and I'm Alive are obviously more humour riveted progressions chiming as if reflections from the head of a creative schizophrenic being previously exposed to cheesy balladry, cloying gay pop, mawkish eurobeat. All the aforementioned facets are absorbed in his deranged, acidic, and a bit aggressive mind. Where is a fifth song, in truth? The issue is a part of the discography of Lausanne, Swiss imprinte Midinette Records.

Nuno Maltez – Improvised Acoustic Guitar (2011)

  • Improvised music
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Art music

Comment: in fact, the title says everything - it is all about the acoustic guitar and improvised kind of music throughout the course of a 17-minute. It is based on canorous guitar twangs, spacey guitar's resonance in the surrounding room and the counterpoint of it are reversed, ellipse-tinged guitar loops to establish the raspy rhythmic point to it at a time. Despite its experimental approach the outing is gentle by its nature and even revealing exuberant facets within its mood. For me, it is a sort of moody music either. And the actual course of it seems to be even a bit shorter than it actually is. I guess it is an implication of qualitative music. The outing is a mote in the discography of Rejected Netlabel.

Mato Grosso – Tea Party EP (2010)

  • Hardcore
  • Alternative rock
  • Power pop
  • Post-hardcore
  • Psych-rock

Comment: this set of 6 pieces is an amalgamation of a hardcore punk bottom and a blackened power pop vector. Indeed, it is not the music for puritans of those styles only. It is not hardcore by numbers. It is playful, cheeky and loving to go beyond. Those slamming drums and some irregular journeys on it, dynamic joint vocals and galvanised hirsute guitars are to constitute a formidable whole. Undoubtedly Tea Party EP is a disparate form of hardcore because it does not associate with certain tight predictable borders, it is not only about anxiety and rage, it is not a big fish in the creek, it is a big fish at the sea. Say yeah to the outing by the Spanish-based quartet..

Niko Niko! – ePop029 (2012)

  • Indie pop/rock
  • Alternative pop/rock
  • Twee pop

Comment: the first remark of mine about this 4-notch outing is related to its tamed and silent nature. The listener should remarkably crank up volume to partake. Musically its roots seem to come out from the cute, twee pop-tinged Swedish indie pop scene (Acid House Kings, The Concretes, Billie the Vision and the Dancers, The Mary Onettes) which was particularly popular in the 00s. Earlier influences used to hark back to the 60s folk music. Cute male vocal lead, retrodelic keyboard sounds and droning, chiming guitars and bubblegum-ish bass patterns which purpose was to entertain the listener. On the other side it is unpretentious to develop indie music as a phenomenon. It is not the sort of Stereolab and Tortoise-alike ambition to cross its borders with every subsequent outing. However, those ditties are solid ones, for example A Lifetime in the Sun is a blissful shimmer dedicated to the spring. The outing is a bit in the discography of the Norwegian-based EardrumsPop. Niko Niko! Is the solo project of Bergen, Norway-based Nickolai Nilsen.

Macaco Bong – Macaco Bong (2016)

  • Post-rock
  • Alternative rock
  • Dance rock
  • Funk
  • Math rock
  • Psych-rock
  • Stoner rock

Comment: just before I started to listen to this Brazil-based combo's music I had listened to the Smiths' second issue Meat Is Murder in f..king vinyl format (joke!), by many considered as the band's most funky issue (the central composition undoubtedly is Barbarism Begins at Home). The change was not the discontinuation, it was a natural succession from one album to another though formally they are different but you can find much common due to these dance-appealed appearances here and there. At least it happened in my head. Formally it is an instance of post-rock with the danceable bubblegum guitar and the tricky bass guitar and the sustaining drums to showcase something different in the post-rock scene. Of course, I should not be misunderstood - it is not a dance pop in the definition of eurobeat and even post-disco. It may be the trio`s roots come out from the No Wave scene, Funkadelic/Parliament, Jimi Hendrix, Sly And The Family Stone instead. The scaffolding of the album is bold, slightly rough but it builds up slowly to reach its impressive climax. For me it is an unusual case because those sophisticated math rock developments are imbued with enchanting grooves and cheerful twists (for instance, listen to Distraiidos Venceremos). At Baiaro De Stoner one can be a part of a high-spirited audible universe through those frantic and exuberant overdrives on guitars. Yet there are up enough numbers where one can perceive more oppressive elliptical patterns moving from one side to another from the bottom to the top as an ominous vapour. Undoubtedly such a clever and crafty combo must be consecrated because of the structure of the tracks and intriguing and profound guitar timbres and sounds. Let's just call it guitar-induced alchemy for all our well-being. This outstanding issue is a part of the discography of the great Brazilian imprint Sinewave.

SISTERS – Christy Canyon EP (2014)

  • Avant-garde
  • Lo-fi
  • Post-industrial
  • Goth-trap
  • DIY
  • Witch house
  • Drag house
  • Experimental music
  • Leftfield

Comment: SISTERS is a project from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, USA whose 4-track issue is dedicated to Christy Canyon, a retired famous porn actress who had been involved in more than 100 adult motion pictures. I like the phrase "Heaven is Christy Canyon falling in love with me" from the song Heaven Is by English synth pop/art pop/post-punk collective Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. I hoped maybe the outing does have a thematic sequel but there is no issues dedicated to Monica Roccaforte, Simona Valli, Erika Bella, for instance. Love seems to be dead in classical sense and all is virtually stimulated and filled in with simulacra. And it is propagated by the mainstream TV. Musically it is a thick, and lo-fi experiment full of stomping witch house and mutant hip-hop and ominous trap rhythms. I will give it the positive valuation especially in those tracks wrapped up in lethargic, vaporous noises as if coming out from different media and thereof providing a shamanic effect on a listener. In truth, this issue strengthens the tradition of industrial music with regard to such famous cases as Cosey Fanny Tutti as being a porn actress and porn as a part of her performance art, Genesis P-Orridge (another member from Throbbing Gristle) as a transgender human being and artist, and Jhonn Balance, and Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson (the core members of Coil) propagating a voluptuous (gay) sex through their music. The issue is a bit in the discography of Diabetic Koala.

C.J. Pizarro – Snow Crabs (2004)

  • Electronic pop
  • Comedy
  • Urban music
  • Hip-hop
  • Rap
  • Indie pop

Comment: it happened quite recently when I discovered such a label as Imaginary Albums which in fact had been in action in the first half of the 00s. The roster of the imprint involves such artists as Corpus Callosum, The History and Civilization of the Great Black Swamp, Laura Palmer, Hubre, Procrustes, Blasting Trout Overbite, Cookie Jar, Santa Inferno, The Harvey Girls, Swain, Tiny Creatures (the artist also being known from the roster of the Israeli imprint Birdsong. Thanks to it I discovered Imaginary Albums), and C.J Pizarro. The two first tracks (Dark Black Semen, Going To Die) apparently mock the violent gangsta rap philosophy and culture gravitating towards sex, guns, and dope. Of course, the rest of the tracks (or at least the most of them) have been managed to focus on these themes but they abandon the apparent stereotypical approach though carrying on a tongue-in-cheek advance and involving black humour (for instance, at Look! I'm an Angel!). Frequently comedy aspects are intermingled with experimental pop elements. For instance, at Alpacas R Us the artist exploits repulsively desperate vowel effects and chants and a battle of sonic effects being counterpointed by sublime a cappella  and soulful singing here and there, However, there are up some tracks which used to distance from rap/hip-hop music. For instance, the final track Heaven and Milk running in the vein of artsy indie pop by employing sliding sonic effects and twanging guitars and exuberant singing.

  • Electronic pop
  • Alternative pop
  • Synth pop
  • Electro-indie
  • Poptronica
  • Indietronica
  • Mood music
  • Chilltronica

Comment: this instrumental set of 3 tracks while clocking in at a 10 minute used to provide a considerable appeal where one can hear sweet-natured synthesised developments being backed up by stomping mid-tempo cadences. The favourite of mine are Lena`s Flag, and Rust where the listener can partake in catchy indie-influenced harmonic gears, glaring timbres, and ebullient rhythmic shuffles (alternatively, one could call it kraut-electro). At Rust those synthesised improvisations are impressive enough to be denoted separately. However, Huh is a solid track by any means as well though paving its way with a more laid-back attitude and a tranquil mood because of being subjugated to a controlled rhythmic algorithm. All the elements are seamlessly linked with one another and thereof consisting of a welcome whole. However, the aforementioned moody difference between the tracks is slight. This positive issue by the experienced Bristol, UK-based artist (being active since the first half of the 00s) is a bit in the discography of Bump Foot.

The Woozy Speakers – Nonlinearities (2011)

  • Indie rock
  • Alternative rock
  • Garage rock
  • Noise pop

Comment: The Woozy Speakers is a combo from Massachusetts, USA and they play mostly booming guitar music though apologizing that some tracks from with n the 10-track issue are out of tune and may not be in-time. Maybe it is so, maybe it is not exactly that way but the most important aspect is that the result makes very sense because the flow of fair noise rock is constant and coherent pouring out of much energy and power from the loudspeakers. Additionally, one of the strengths of the issue is related to emotive side as well. For instance, Medicine is a fine love song with sublime profound echoes and an emotive blanket. At Walt The Hound Dog they (ironically) sing that “country music is in my blood” but one can hear certain influences coming from the East coast indie scene (The Pixies, and Dinosaur Jr.), and Scottish indie popsters such as The Vaselines, The Primitives, and The Pastels, and even some vibes of an early My Bloody Valentine (especially at If You Were You). Musically it is a quite linear alternative pop example but it is focused on a certain style and exploiting different penumbras to amplify the final result. And it fulfils a listener.

  • Lo-fi
  • DIY
  • Alternative
  • Indie
  • Electronic
  • Post-punk
  • Psychedelic
  • Avant-pop
  • Minimal synth

Comment: by listening to this 11-notch outing it reminds me of those times when I was listening to Devendra Banhart (it probably happened in the second half of 2003), and Ariel Pink (it was probably up in the beginning of 2005). It does not mean that Mjatnaya Lovushka, and Ariel Pink are stylistically very similar but it is all about do-it-yourself attitude, about home recording, about self-esteem to create something special and distinguishing (even if it is partly rehashed and borrowed from obscure, forgotten traditions of the underground music scene. In fact, we have no chance to exceed previously established cultural layers beneath and around us). The whole starts off at Melting Light Among Leaves with a soaring riff-o-rama being accompanied by clumsy stomping beats at the bottom and dreamy synthesisers and singing atop. While I was producing the sound of Autharktos I sometimes liked to exploit one of such a prepared rhythm on my synthesiser Casio Tonebank Sa-1 with intent to slightly modulate and change its initial pace. Later tracks, however, will reveal the artist`s more introverted nature even he likes to use hirsute guitar sounds and employ minimal and monotonous yet predominant post-punk/and minimal synth tinged drumming. It is because the Kosmische Musik/cosmic synth induced aspect is strongly presented within it. His soundscape is sometimes wrapped up in enchanting hisses to provide an additional value to the soundscape. You can find out many gems from within it (Komari, Melting Light Among Leaves, Drawings, Pink Flakes, Poison In Your Bag) but the whole is devoid of fillers and weak compositions. This spellbinding issue is a bit in the discography of Cologne, Germany-based imprint 101.io.

Nieva Sobre Dioses – Ecos de Otros Mundos Sospechad (2008)

  • Electronic music
  • Kosmische Musik
  • Alternative
  • Synthwave
  • Darkwave
  • Industrial electro

Comment: these 46 minutes are up there to disclose a stunning issue based on masterful synth-based works filled in with poignant rhythmic turns, sublime harmonic progressions while being saturated with murky timbres. As the result it seems to be enduring and majestic because all these 6 compositions seem to be seamlessly followed by one another. However, it does not mean at all it lacks enough elements to be intriguing and thought-provoking. Musically it could be tagged as an instance of synthwave and Kosmische Musik while being baptized by a dark ambient/darkwave priest. It chimes like a living, autarkic universe of whom breathing can be perceived in all directions of the universe. Emotionally one can discern slightly repulsive loneliness/nothingness being subordinated by immanent mastery. This universe is embraced by another universe called Gorriòn de Miga Records.

J. Oskura Nájera – Phil Spectrum (2016)

  • Dada pop
  • Electronic pop
  • Leftfield
  • Dance pop
  • New Wave
  • Synth pop
  • Art pop
  • Neoclassical
  • Avant-pop
  • Alternative dance
  • Surf pop

Comment: this 12-notch issue clocking in at a 27-minute only is a witty comment on electronic pop music. It involves a loads of “obligatory” styles as synth pop, (electronic) dance pop yet there are represented more post-punk/rock/New Wave-tinged numbers as well. In truth, the styles are not represented in pure format. Furthermore, the artist is inclined to find out supportive points from darkened/neoclassical electronic music, uncanny cabaret and art pop styles. In such a track as La niebla acecha BSO one can draw parallels upon the likes of Messer Chups/and Messer Für Frau Müller, and Man or Astro-man? because those ghostly synthesised high frequencies and sheer electronic effects and surf pop-based elements (especially at torbellino de ostias 02) are intermingled with a tongue-in-cheek attitude. The latter fact of the last mentioned sentence can be admitted about The Facts In The Case Of The Hypnocoin BSO because the frantic first half of the track on synthesisers is merely followed by austere bleeps in the second part. Indeed, music is united with the manifestation of nothingness though all the impression comes into a mind-provoking substance. Indeed, it could be said some seeds of dada pop are represented over there. The issue is a part of the discography of Barcelona, Catalonia-based imprint NYAPSTER. Fairly fine.

Miseryslims – EP.1 (2017)

  • Indie pop/rock
  • Alternative pop/rock

  • Jangle pop

Comment: Miseryslims is a trio from Manitoba, Canada who plays a simple yet sensitive sort of rock music on their debut outing. It is based on fairly chiming guitars and expressive male vocal to express sublime longing and slightly changing moods throughout the tracks. One may find out an additional value from the fact that this 4-track outing was recorded in a cabin somewhere nearby a shallow swamp lake. Indeed, the guitars still have power to be a predominant bottom within the indie music scene. The favourite track of mine is Cloth Deity. Very nice success indeed.

Comment: I can only agree with the statement that Wings Of An Angel`s 80-minute long issue is something very eccentric and addictive. You shall have to take time to get into this endless, tremendous drone of being provided with slightly varied tones and lysergic penumbras which eventually progress into truly epic and fascinating. I cannot be without the aforementioned adjectives because other words may sound way too faint to express the impact of a subsequent album by the Israeli musician. It sounds as if a tremendous current getting by and a the same time seducing a listener with its soothing vibes and silky timbres. Oh yeah, it is a great success by a very prolific artist who knows how to maintain the quality regardless. I am going to add it to the list of the best albums in 2017.

The Gifted Children – Open Windows (2009)

  • Indie pop
  • Alternative pop
  • Art pop
  • Noise pop
  • Chamber pop
  • Epic
  • Electronic
  • Jangle pop
  • Americana
  • Baroque pop

Comment: it seems the only shortage of this 7-track outing is related to its shortness. It chimes as if there were represented one track only though the track with different facets and magnetic fields. From lofty chamber pop glimpses and luminous Americana induced developments to catchy jangle pop instances to a more tumultuous noise pop explosion (Here Comes The Flood) and dreamy piano driven numbers to a sublime, restrained electronic instance (Niblick). But it is not an instance of indie by numbers. It is a dynamic drift between the different genres and because of that many the so-called indie groups do have much to learn from it. It might be by using the word "indie" for that it is a pejorative case. It is highly sympathetic of how the soundscape of these songs used to soar and reach fairly blissful points eventually (for instance, at A Forest). Top notch by any means by the Rochester, NY, US-based combo. Give your valuable time to listen to it.

Noise Machine – Disturbing Sensitive Ears (2013)

  • Noise
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Non-music
  • Leftfield
  • Psychoacoustic

Comment: undoubtedly the relations between music and noise is a topic on its own. Firstly, how it should be categorised, is it a part of music or a deviation from it? One of the first noiseniks were Italians and they created their soundscapes to protest against the war and atrocities which ravaged Europe despite the lofty ideas and profound thought being predominant in science and philosophy in the first two decades. Noise music as a composed art of powerful, devastating sounds was an incisive sign reflecting on decayed and collapsed ideas regarding humanity. The Brazilian Noise Machine as a project started off in the mid-90s to create overwhelming soundscapes providing no mercy and grace. This 4-track outing is a mind-blowing ravage based on brownish noises, "erroneous" frequencies being thrown over the four soundscapes. Indeed, a listener is the subject to partake from these "errors" as a musical component. At times one can suspect is it alright with his/her stereo system or headphones. Is it a terrible mess for you? I really hope you will not perceive it in that way because of not being that shit altogether. Although it is not easy ride at all one can figure out many intriguing sounds, hisses, effects and eventually a whole behind it. It plays tricks on your sacred mind. The outing is a part of the discography of DreamNoise imprint.

Junya Nishimura – Vitality In The Blank (2016)

  • Modern classical
  • Minimalism
  • Avant-garde
  • Post-classical
  • Piano music
  • Improvised music
  • Mood music

Comment: I am glad to be back by choosing out from the discography of a Japanese imprint, Totokoko. This set of 16 tracks is a simplistic one by its format and accomplishment because of consisting of sparse and silent piano chords. It chimes like it would have been played by a lone piano player in the corner being depressed for a while but yet ready to come out from that mentally deranged hole. Indeed, you can hear silver lines and waking mood on the album especially when the artist employs faster chords in his playing. Furthermore, despite being simplistic by its format and outer shape its inner qualities are superiorly arousing and suggestive full of invisible touch and intangible magic. It reminds of the simplicity of the music of Steve Reich, and Philip Glass but it is in that way at the first glance. Less is more in that context because Junya Nishimura can handle the lonely chords in an improvisational manner. By kindred souls I recommend listen to such artists as Lubomyr Melnyk, Oskar Hallbert, Nils Frahm, Bosque De Mi Mente, Ólafur Arnalds, Jacaszek, Max Richter.

Monkey Warhol – EP3 (2016)

  • Electro pop
  • Alternative dance
  • Electronic pop
  • Alternative pop

Comment: Monkey Warhol is an artist from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA who have released 4 EPs so far. If to cite the electro-catchy ditty Desperate Measures “the rhythm is your mysteries” and it says all in fact. All these 5 tracks clocking in at a 12 minute is a lush rhythmic Moloch full of propulsive electro beats and iterative phrases of word. I guess Andy Warhol would like that because of music and because of the history (in fact, the legend behind it) of Monkey Warhol used to deface other historical facts either. For instance, the artist was inspired by Bob Dylan’s loud and abrasive Metal Machine Music. Additionally the artist must be quite old because he (or she) was born in late-1800s. And of course, Monkey Warhol partly hijacked the identity of Andy Warhol which has been a practice by the counterculture for a while to employ the symbols of the mainstream economic-driven culture and then deface and ridicule them. Yet it is a new level because Andy Warhol was a prominent figure within the counterculture. Never mind, the outing is a top tier.

Infraaudio - Prana (2016)

  • Alternative rock
  • Screamo
  • Epic
  • Emo

Comment: in fact, it is hard to describe this couple of tracks being a part of the discography of Sinewave, a Brazilian imprint. It might be it is the firm sound of the label because it used to drift somewhere between some styles of metal, straightforward alternative rock and massive post-rock. Its content is elegantly slamming and flowing at the same time being accentuated with Portuguese singing. By listening to Antena it can be said it is overflowed with emotions yet not being cheesy and annoying. It is massive yet not being lame. It is like a fine spectacle of rolling guitar torrents and desperate manhood. That's is a way to depict the world around us. And a listener can perceive warmth pouring out of it. Additionally to Sinewave, it is also a bit in the discography of another Brazilian imprint, Bigorna Discos.

The Hathaway Family Plot – Mechanics In The Age Of Artistic Reproduction (2017)

  • Avant-garde
  • No Wave
  • Art pop
  • Noise
  • Experimentalism
  • Experimental pop
  • Freeformfreakout
  • Post-industrial
  • Drone pop
  • Improvised music
  • Avant-pop

Comment: it is not surprise at all I have been fascinated with the aesthetics of The Hathaway Family Plot for a while because every step by a Buffalo, US-based artist called Kevin McFadden is worth to be parsed and thought off. It is interesting and intriguing. In comparison to his previous albums he used to incorporate new elements and axial aspects to the mix and making it in the way to change the paradigm being set out by him previously. The current 14-notch issue is overwhelmed by stomping noises, designed deranged noise sculptures (Dymaxion; Not Gonna Leave), gentle yet uncanny improvisations of having neither time nor space and some mutilated vocal lines and if to compare it to the artist previous issue Having No Alternative it is more inclined to be a successor of No Wave music and the aesthetic of beatniks. Its purpose is to to be set free from oppressive conventions and annoying traditions being an effect of a society of having no future and certain plan to transcend recent economic and survival understanding. At least it seems so while Kevin McFadden likes to manipulate with it and finally destroy it by deconstructing it into something new and challenging. Indeed, one part of the whole it is made up of thought-provoking sounds but the rest of it reveals a huge emotional impact on one's weary sensations and resigned soul. It can be concluded it is ultimately a positive plan to be set out for the sake of all of us. Indeed, by listening to the whole I can imagine it as if a sonic counterpoint of a beatnik text being converted into. But it does not mean the artist dislikes silent moments. For instance, Elegy for Thomas Kincaid The Younger (1661-1726) is a sublime number of a droning organ and a dense harmonica (?). However, The Locks reminds of the art of Robert Wyatt. In general, Mechanics In The Age Of Artistic Reproduction is a fine outing which is a chapter along the path paved by Kevin McFadden. Alarms are up there everywhere but we need more and more surprises to cope with them. Digital simulacra and the simulacra of real life are just nugatory objects to deceive himself/herself thoroughly. It is not the solution at all.

Vincent Casanova – Cosmic Bikini EP (2005)

  • House
  • Tech-house
  • Club dance
  • Electronic music
  • Electro house

Comment: first of all, it is quite annoying to review house and club music related issues because those ones are quite orthodox by its nature except if a style is still in the beginning of its formation. For example, Vincent Casanova's 4-notch outing is a strong statement through electro house and tech-house pathways. All the mandatory elements which make music loveable are nicely represented over there - catchy rhythms, iterative rhythmic patterns, hovering synthesisers atop. At times you will forget yourself in the midst of those trance-inducing gaits. What else to add? I like the title. Even more I would like to know who is supposed to wear the cloth? The outing is a bit in the discography of Montrèal-based imprint Epsilonlab. Solid work.
