Kaarel Mihk – Vaade (2014)

/Noise, Experimentalism, Psycho-acoustic, Post-industrial, Non-music, Spoken word, Space rock, Electro-acoustic, Lo-fi, DIY, Musique concrete, Avant-garde/

Comment: Kaarel Mihk is an Estonian noisenik who has issued all his 4 issues in 2014. The recent issue is part of discography of Trash Can Dance, a DIY music label from Tallinn, Estonia. Mihk`s 7-track issue used to extend from dull-coloured electro-acoustic and concrete sound blended sonic examples and restrained spaced-out and industrial drenched landscapes to more power electronic jams, straight up pink noise and piercing brown noise torrents and even hirsute guitar-induced noise rock (actually it is rather space rock) appearances. At times he exploits spoken word pieces and samples or something like that – however, those are heavily distorted and mutilated. The result is thought-provoking and upsetting being a refreshing entry into the sparse Estonian noise music scene.

Jääkaappi - Sähköliha (2013)

9.2

/Hard rock, Psychedelic rock, Alternative rock/

Comment: these 14 pieces hark back to the tradition of good old hard rock times, more concretely, which could be described as a intense firework of boosting guitar riffs and overdrives, pronounced Finnish singing and heavy psychedelic Hammond organ sound conveying dusty magic and incessant key changes. However, by straddling the borders between a little bit grotesque, self-irony and serious thereby providing viable energy, joyous climaxes and pure fun. It might be seem strange but there are up some moments resembling Happy Mondays  (at least for Happy Mondays without those loose, baggy rhythms). The collective comes out from Finland, and the album is issued on an Estonian underground label, Trash Can Dance.

Misha Mishajashvili - 2011 (2011/2012)

9.2

/Spoken word, World music, Avant-garde, Experimentalism, Avant-industrial, Crossover, Ethnic music, Acousmatics, Psycho-acoustic, Non-music/

Comment: Misha Mishajashvili provides a batch of intriguing, oddly designed compositions which are immersed with very surprising aspects and crossways. More concretely, it chimes like a chronicle of the industralization of the USSR and the creation of a new human race. Moreover, it can be viewed as a sonic evidence of the socialist realism where the dominating industrial-tinged axis is embellished with ethnic music motives (a loads of tabla rhythms below the sound layers), church choirs, jazzy samples and spoken word snippets which in turn used to depict relentless propaganda of the Red Plague. MM used to masterfully treat and distort these hiss-soaked elements, however, therefore amplifying and widening certain bits and spots from within the tremendous whole giving it an anxious milieu and distinct touch. Powerful!

Cosmos Laguna - Karma Cleaner (2011)

/Industrial electro, EBM, Industrial trance, Synth industrial, Alternative, Dark synth/

Comment
: Cosmos Laguna is a brooding industrial electro act with apparent dodges by the side of trance and dark wave/synth music. Of course, the reference of mine must not be misunderstood. The album has nothing to do with the kind of cheesy trance acrobatics, though, some tracks show up weird dance-appealed vibes. Otherwise massively piercing beats and drilling electro forays are surrounded by wraith-alike veil and tight murky vapour. Behind this idiosyncratic project is Alari Keskla, a 33-year-old producer from Estonia. The album is released on the Estonian underground (CD-R) label Trash Can Dance.
