In Vitro – Transdimensional Woods (2018)

  • Tech-house
  • Post-disco
  • Tech-funk
  • Electronic music
  • Club dance
  • Electro-funk

I guess a term, "in vitro" refers at technical aspect, and "transdimensional woods" may be a hint at Ghostwood National Forest, the forest that surrounded Twin Peaks. In a word, a technical aspect superimposed upon sounds being imbued with profound mystics. More detailedly, techno and house related rhythmic patterns are propelled by funky touch as similarly as CAN's krautrock was propelled by funk on Soon Over Babaluma (1974). This bunch of 4 tracks comes from within the discography of Nulogic.

Coti – Metamemoria (2001/2020)

  • IDM
  • Electronic music
  • Experimental electronica
  • Downtempo
  • Minimal techno
  • Organic electronica
  • Musique concrète
  • Ambient techno

Coti's Metamemoria was firstly released on Vibrant Music in 2001 and since then being considered an important issue in Greece. Inner Ear Records released it on vinyl approximately two decades later to resurface electronic memories from the period when many important issues and projects did take place. Boards Of Canada, Squarepusher, Plaid, Plone, and of course two main stalwarts like Richard D. James based on his many pseudonyms, and Autechre from the Great Britain, and on the other side Teutonic IDM/neokrautrock/post-techno artists like To Rococo Rot, Mouse on Mars, Kreidler, Jan Jelinek, Pole, Oval, Microstoria had broadened borders of electronic music. Given that chronological and technological advantage most musicians from other districts were undoubtedly influenced by them. Metamemoria is a fascinating issue because of searching successfully for balance between coherent flow in harmonized and syncopated progression and refreshing sonic fabric and compelling effects. All these elements are properly represented doing away with undue exaggerations. However, the listener can find out a legacy of Kraftwerk coming from their Autobahn period. The favourite of mine is M Key, a superb track of cinematic semi-orchestrations imbued with heavy vinyl crackles and backed up by a slowed-down pace. In a word, solid performance.

  • Alternative pop/rock
  • Bedroom pop
  • Psychedelic
  • Singer-songwriter

In fact, this album being released on the lo-fi imprint 20kbps is the favourite pop issue from this year. It deals with remembering and interpretation of dreams. In truth, it is a human being's necessity to live in the past because the present is just a second to get immediately disappeared and the future is not available in strict sense. So we are already dead in advance. I see Ariel Pink as the most important musician in the last two decade because his early home recorded lo-fi music could surpass the aforementioned categories of time. As one thoroughly music related person said after in my country he had heard Ariel's music for the first time God (who is beyond everything) started to create (pop) music. There has been just few embodiments of Lord – Ennio Morricone, and Angus Maclise I would like to add. First four albums by Tim Hecker and some albums by Natural Snow Buildings are also bright candidates. Listen to this 10-notch whole get immersed in swathes of soft guitar jangles, subtle vocal arrangements and exquisite synthesised progressions coming over the listener's head. The subject and the object meld together due to timeless sense of melody and harmony. One's perception seems to be otherwise as it was before starting a listen. You have a chance to soften personal existential turnarounds.

It was almost a crime one did not have had officially a chance to get a copy of this excellent album by an excellent now defunct Italian imprint, Chew-Z for a while. The end of the 00s and the first couple of years of the 10s was a merry time span within the music scene. Lots of musicians with hope and passion, with zeal and power happened to be around there. This bunch of handful of compositions is a proof - an elegant, compelling drift between groovy free jazz, picturesque post-rock, razing progressive rock, some experimental electronic undercurrents (glitch, musique concrète) and borderline psychedelic music which makes the listener think outside of the formal walls of experimental music which otherwise used to happen quite frequently (related to the sense of being incarcerated in a dungeon – though dungeon noise is an OK subgenre of the generally rubbish genre dungeon synth). Lots of changes is up there but it is not the goal but an instrumental measure helping to come to fruition. Before starting listening to a contemporary improvised music release take this in before.

Awesome Ochinchins – thirteenwaystosaygoodbyetoyou (2019)

  • Noise rock
  • Post-hardcore
  • Post-metal
  • Alternative rock
  • Emo
  • Shoegaze

As it is well known Japan is a country of sonic contrasts – from the eclectic yet catchy mix of J-pop to the abrasive at times unbearable nature of Japanoise. Awesome Ochinchins stands somewhere in the middle though a bit more toward the latter named movement due to similarities with such noise rock legends as Fushitsusha, and Boredoms. One can hear excited layers of post-hardcore and bombastic emo vowels being backed up by alternate shapes and ibtensity of electric guitars full of frantic anxiety and unnerving state of mind. More silent moments borrow guitar touch from shoegaze (more concretely reminding of Loveless-era My Bloody Valentine). However, ultimately all of that feels to be neatly managed which could be considered simultaneously the plus and minus of this album. The loveable outing is a part of the discography of Nepiaporo Records.
