Ajal, mil ma olen kriisis mõne oma kunagise lemmiku suhtes – arvan, et My Bloody Valentine`i „Loveless” (1991) on enim valesti mõistetud album üleüldse – selle väärtus käib iga kuulamisega üha enam maha. Mõned pärlid keset keskpärast pläusti. Poolfabrikaat. Geniaalsus on segi aetud talenditu nikerdamisega. Anglosaksi muusikakriitikud on tahtevõimetud asjast aru saama; hoolimata tõigast, et nende endi valitud parimate kitarristide esisajasse Kevin Shields`il asja reeglina ei ole. Eks punkrokk pakub pinget seesugustes kriisisituatsioonides – eriti kui vastav muusika on pingestatud kunstiliste püüdlustega. Sellel kuueloolisel albumil on nii kõrvalõikavat detsibelli kui teravat heliornamentikat – kiledate kidrade foonil tõusevad aeg-ajalt esile elektroonilised efektid, klahvpillipassaažid ja meeldivalt pealevalguv gruuvrütmistik (eriti lugu „The Stranger Inside”), meenutades mõneti Röövel Ööbiku „Ilu” (1989), mis arvatavasti on üks parimaid indipunkalbumeid üleüldse. Ülbet ja eneseteadlikku tõnupedarulikku jauramist võib kohata ka siin-seal. Album ei ole tohi olla pikk – pikk selles tähenduses, et üllitis on (eriti päramises osas) täidetud keskpäraste lugudega, mis tõmbavad paratamatult terviku üldhinnet alla. Täna kogesin seda näiteks The Verve`i klassikuga „Urban Hymns” (1997). Montréal`ist pärit New Vogue doseerib oskuslikult triviaalsust vürtsi ja maitsekusega, andes reliisile värske vaaba. Kõrtsirokist progepungini; kuigi tegu on buliimikutega, oskavad nad halva maitse lõksu mitte astuda – see vist ongi uus mood. "Vogue" on prantsuskeelne sõna, ent nad laulavad inglise keeles.

Kuulates seda 6-loolist albumit tuleb tõdeda muusikute vajadust vallutada helisügavusi või siis – ise luua laiendatud helimaastikke, mille piirid oleksid lükatud võimalikult kaugele. Ja piirid oleksid võimalikult hägused ning tinglikud. Kui rääkida konkreetsetest muusikažanritest nagu deep house ja dub, siis tuleb nentida teatud ortodokssust. Ehk tõesti, kui piirid avada täielikult, siis ruum täitub rutemini ja üllatusmomendid hääbuvad tulevikuks. Ent kvaliteet jääb – maitsekas triiv techno, dub'i ja ambient'i piirialadel ja valdustes. Teisalt on see näide, kuidas minimalism sirutab tiibu elektrooniIise ja klubimuusika näitel. Ehk isegi näeme selles mikroskoopililist mulaaži ilmaruumi laienemisest ja kokkutõmbumisest. Nõnda see helipilt muutub majesteetlikul skaalal mikroskoopiliste ühikute võrra.
