Richard Lainhart - Introduction to Analog Synthesis (2012)

10.0

 /Lecture, Sound synthesis, Conceptual, Music/

Comment: Introduction to Analog Synthesis was a lecture performed at the Pocono Skies festival at the Shawnee Playhouse, Pennsylvania, USA in the Pocono mountains in the Spring of 2010. This one-off festival featured performances, collaborations, workshops and lectures over the two day festival weekend. Richard Lainhart presented this lecture Saturday afternoon May 16th, 2010 to a crowd of enthusiastic synthesists and electronic musicians. More profoundly, the particular constituents, basic parts and technics (sine waves, amplifiers, amplitude, sawtooth waves, envelope effects, oscillators, the types of noise and sonic filters, square wave, pitch effects etc) of sound synthesis are showcased throughout the course of a hour, however, all these details are exemplified by the sounds of soft synths which do emulgate exactly the sounds of analog synthesizers. However, the listener is backed up by hints of how to produce electronic music. A label, called Ethereal Live, dedicated the issue in honour of Richard Lainhart (February 14, 1953 - December 30, 2011). Mandatory by any senses.

krill.minima - Urlaub Auf Balkonien (2007)

8.7

/Dub-tech, Experimental electronica, Dubtronica, Tech-dub, Crossover/

Comment: by my opinion, this set of 9 notches takes on a journey through grey-tinged landscapes which are covered with essentially thick dub vapour and hazy electronic whiffs at any point of the location of the issue. The compositions are lengthy and profound, though, being without any suggestive turns and striking forays. Instead of it the subject is up there to be manipulated through soothing currents and discursive oscillations which foray into the subconsciousness of the listener.

Arts & Crafts - Arts & Crafts Sampler Vol. 7 (2010)

9.0

/Electronic pop, Alternative pop/rock, Indie pop, Baroque pop, Compilation/

Comment: this 12 track sampler is issued on a well-known Canadian indie label, named Arts & Crafts. There are represented such artists as Sally Seltmann, Zeus, Dan Mangan, Chilly Gonzales, Timber Timbre, Amy Millan, Broken Social Scene, Jason Collett, Los Campesinos, The Most Serene Republic, Still Life Still, The Hidden Cameras. Indeed, it can be said that the best part of these artists have already established their reputation, thereby being beloved all around the world. However, stylistically the miscellany veers away from the instances of silenful alt-folk contemplations and burbly indie rock examples to shimmering brass and baroque pop, soft rock revival and more electronically whimsical propulsions and majestic spiritual outbursts.

The Flesh Eating Goons - Cranium Crunch EP (2004)

9.0

/Surf pop, Avant-pop, DIY, Experimental, Lo-fi, Psychedelic pop, Rockabilly, Mood music/

Comment: a musical project with the funny name, called The Flesh Eating Goons conveys 8 short-running tracks (all the pieces used to be finished off at the length of 2 minutes) to the listeners interlacing dashing surf pop compositions imbued with frantic shuffles on chords and cadences with some rockabilly motives, self-conscious lo-fi sensitivity and humorous sensibility now and then. And those moody overdrives based on slightly gleaming guitar riffs and psychedelic keyboards are simply fascinating. Because of that this case can be compared with the likes of Man...Or Astroman, Juanitos, and Messer Chups, for instance. And these tracks make up your day.
