Silent Strike x Makunouchi Bento – Winds Veiled In Darkness (2020)

  • Electronic music
  • Experimentalism
  • Art music
  • Avant-garde
  • Oldie music
  • Hauntology
  • Sampledelic
  • Conceptual
  • Dark ambient

Comment: this 13-track outing is a collaboration between two Romanian artists one of them is a duo called Makunouchi Bento may be (well-) known to visitors at RMH. Getting inspiration from the invisible and mysterious they have managed to reassemble ghostly shades and hyper-realistic flickers with the assistance of more or less traditional sounds. The heart of the release is a series of wax cylinders recorded by Béla Bartók approximately the century ago, capturing the folk music of Banat, Romania. In fact, either by listening to an example of oldie music or getting an axial sample into a contemporary composition like the compositions of The Caretaker and The Fucked Up Beat have verified so far such sort of music is thoroughly haunting and mysterious to a contemporary human being it may be even more spectral than a deliberately manipulated dark ambient composition used to be. Even if you are listening to the songs of then absolute pop stars like Al Jolson you may feel a shiver coming through your heart and down your body. Similarly something like that one can feel listening to Ghostophonia where the artists have left enough air and space between the oldie samples and more or less warped sonic bits to let microscopic melodies and tiny harmonies appear and accentuate the apex of past times and inevitably the touch of death into one's mind to be come. If it comes to one's mind the more it seems to be amplified through bittersweet remembrance and feeling of immediate passing of time. If to compare this issue to Makunouchi Bento's previous issues (I am very aware of a collaborative tenure by Silent Strike though) Ghostophonia seems to be sonically less layered and more linear, as already mentioned, to get hold of feeling of our temporary residence and finalisation of the inevitable arrangement by Lord (Heaven knows we will be dust as Mozza sang 35-36 years ago at the time of his tenure with the Smiths). Would you like to fight back? You're welcome by following the formula – ars longa, vita brevis. So follow the logic of the artists to become immortal. For the reviewer here it is the first notch from the new decade to be truly worthwhile.

  • Ambient rock
  • Ambient metal
  • Drone doom
  • Doomgaze
  • Experimental rock

Comment: this batch of 3 tracks which clocks in at a half hour in total is a haunting blend of ominous guitar timbres, slowly changing aural ebbs and tides and atmospheric plateaus which are conjured up with effect-laden guitars and cymbal-induced washes. As equal as the outer impact of the powerful facade the inner aspect has been managed to the same degree due to droning and minimally changing notes and swapping timbres. You can be a witness how a microcosmos and a macrocosmos collapse with one another for to get melt down to a seamless whole. At Grey one can hear a droning organ in the middle of guitars which chimes epic and psychedelic at the same time being initially challenging and ultimately rewarding. There is no chip on the shoulder to be found. The impressive outing is a part of the discography of Silber Records which is a solid port of releasing rock music of experimental/droning/ambient kind.

Fulmedesh – caracoles de una ciudad enterrada (2020)

  • Improvised music
  • Avant-garde
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Drone doom
  • Experimentalism
  • Spoken word
  • Abstract
  • Electronic
  • Psycho-acoustic
  • Sound poetry
  • Micronoise
  • Improvised noise

Comment: Fulmedesh is the long-distance project of Argentina-based Mariela Arzadun (ARP Odyssey, volca bass, guitar, field recordings, poems), and the US-based Keith Helt who runs the imprint pan y rosas discos (guitar, pedals, flute, keyboard, drums, computer, poems) who play an instance of improvised music full of feeling. More profoundly, the soundscape of six compositions is sonically and stylistically angular and spiked with sheer sonic effects, transgressive progressions, fast and frequently unanticipated turns. I did perceive how the music had resonated with sounds coming from the street outside which in fact consists partially of recorded real concrete sounds. In general, all the obligatory elements of experimental/improvised music/noise are represented and something a little bit else additionally here. Mariela Ardazun-played the austere sounds and minimally functional sonic trickery on the vintage Korg ARP Odyssey permeate throughout the course. At Oh yes! It was a different tiger o quién habló de eso antes Anne Boyer reads her poem Not Writing being performed on June 28, 2016 in Zagreb, Croatia. The personal favourite of mine is Forced Landing On The Stomach Of A Turtle which is channelized into a minimally trudging drone doom-laden rock composition being embellished with shards of electronics and stoned intonation. Addtionally to the Keith Helt curated imprint the issue is released in conjunction with Amor Loco.

Intelec – Giro (2007)

  • Deep techno
  • Electronic music
  • Experimental techno
  • Glitchtronica
  • IDM
  • Ambient techno

Comment: this bunch of 6 tracks is all about profound reveries on hypnotic rhythms which in turn are surrounded by torn sonic effects, delicate glitches and concealed voice manipulations. Despite its strong impact on the rhythmic backbone (indeed, the kick drum predominantly kicks and rumbles around) the Spanish duo does not forget to craftily impose upon emotive synapses with the aid of halcyon synthesizers and lighthearted melodies. This sort of synthesized expressions are characteristic to deep house notches although the recent case is experimental techno by numbers (i.e unpredictable ones). The masterful issue is a bit within the discography of Miga. The very respect of mine.

STUCKINWAVEFORMS – Seeds (2019)

  • Hip-hop
  • Trip-hop
  • Electronic music
  • Nu jazz
  • Urban music
  • Breaks
  • Deep house
  • Club dance
  • Sampledelic
  • Funk
  • Mood music
  • Chilltronica
  • Cinematic

Comment: in fact, these tags say all what will be happening in the next 14 tracks. Lots of purple-tinged electric piano chords and mostly mid-tempo breaks are up there for the turntable to lose its power by resulting in twisted chords and more and less unexpected changes in direction and gear. Hello on the other side is a very cheerful due to a combination of bubblegum-ish funk frequencies. Obviously another (compelling) hit beyond that overwhelming Feelgood. Highly welcome are adept dance-appealed entries into the compartment of electro-house and deep house. It can be admitted these 35 minutes are craftily balanced in mood and formal configuration given that it exceeds the fantasy of an average Flying Lotus' inspired artist. The astounding issue is a part of the discography of Orikami Records. Call it futuristic fusion if you wish, however, it is one of the best albums from the previous year.

Ann Deveria – Domingo Tarde (2009)

  • Experimentalism

  • Drone
  • Ambient drone
  • Americana
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Musique concrète
  • Abstract
  • Live recording
  • Avant-garde
  • Acousmatic music
  • Microtonal
  • Micronoise

Comment: this is a 2-notch track of unusual choice of music by Ann Deveria under the Spanish experimental imprint Audiotalaia. The beginning part is a 14-minute track consisting of whitish droning imbued with light hisses, accidental electro-acoustic/concrete music episodes a la door opening, walking and other every day's home noises which in fact add a positive, familiar impact upon the track. The pace behind the composition is brought forth by an act of simple pulsating and harmonized phase shifting. One may perceive it as if a dozen channels of electricity was embedded in a huge concave. Despite its apparently pale nature the result does have a deep sensibility.
The second part, however, is a surprise due to decelerated pace based on lone yet atmospheric acoustic guitar plucks and longing dreamy harmonica improvisations as if Route 66 was depicted in a panoramic view meandering in the middle of a secluded, uncivilized landscape as we frequently can see in the movies. It is also the kind of what Sergio Leone would have used in some episodes of his Spaghetti Western movies. Solid by any means.

Guilty Strangers – Oracle (2012)

  • Post-punk
  • Deathrock
  • Gothic rock
  • Alternative rock
  • Experimental rock
  • Avant-rock
  • Art rock

Comment: this bunch of 10 tracks comes out of the discography of Zorch Factory, now defunct imprint dedicated to post-punk and its a bit darker derivatives like gothic rock and coldwave. The latter one was initially related to French-speaking regions like France and Wallonia. It is not surprising because Zorch Factory Records was a French one. However, not all bands were the aforementioned regions related, like Guilty Strangers hailing from San Antonio, Texas, USA. Yeah, the release is about the gothic yet it is different at most times from the UK-based gothic juggernauts due to deathrock influences thereby resulting in more fast paced and galvanized songs. However, female singing and high registered yearning and cellophane-alike guitars bring in mind Siouxsie and the Banshees unintentionally. At Snake one can partake in slowed-down ragged incantations based on the improvisations of a staccato guitar. In any cases, the second part of the issue embraces more sonic experiments and unusual tempo signatures and song structures. The album includes witty one-liners and dark theme considerations like violence, (ancestral) sin, weird dreams. All in all, it is thoroughly good.

Martin Rach – Doubling Moons (2020)

  • Avant-garde
  • Ambient drone
  • Glitchtronica
  • Noise
  • Experimentalism
  • Electronic
  • Improvised music
  • Drone
  • Chamber music
  • Post-classical
  • Improvised noise
  • Ambient

Comment: before I started listening to this 6-notch Moon series I had listened to two previous outings of the Lithuanian experimental musician. And it was a truly arbitrary, highly accidental choice with regard to Martin Rach's enormous collection behind for obsessive lovers in experimental music (also known as Mirth Naarc). First of them was Piano Attic (2016), an intricate mix of modern piano music with a strong inclination toward electro-acoustic music and elaborated noise. A second was Late Autumn Quartets (2016), a fine flow of post-classical/chamber music work with dodges into noisy bursts and more electronics.
Given that the flow being quite similar related to the last mentioned issue Doubling Moons chimes as his first issue in a new decade (but not the sole issue anymore) due to blurred borders between foggy chamber music, slow motion induced droning and flashback filled, crackled ambient like early wondrous Tim Hecker used to do (from Haunt Me Haunt Me Do It Again to Mirages) to amplified, tectonic noise resonances. In a word, it is a bloody great, absolutely accomplished release which on the other side, fortunately, is just a span in the continuing trajectory of the artist. After that let's be ready to immerse into his subsequent issue called Naihtyme. And the previous ones should be shed light upon again.

Black Bug – Reflecting The Light (2013)

  • Synth-punk
  • Dance punk
  • Art punk
  • DIY
  • Electroclash
  • Electro-punk
  • Lo-fi

Comment: this 11-track outing is something which straddles on the border of electro and punk being embellished with vintage spoken samples and catchy singing. By listening to the lo-fi production and thorough DIY intention of this Italian-based combo it can be said for instance both Sex Pistols (from the past), and Fischerspooner (from the present time) chime like established combos with regard to it. Additionally, such sort of music resurrects in mind such combos as The Screamers, Digital Leather, Units, Suicide. On the other side, with regard to a permanent acerbic droning and straightforward pace it is close to Silver Apples rather than The Fall. Especially astounding are those a bit hypnotic and a bit venomous progressions on synths being accompanied by howling singing manner and mechanic autistic drums. If you have a wish you can buy their LP being released on Eighteen Records.

Fani Konstantinidou ‎– Winter Trilogy / The Big Fall (2020)

  • Drone
  • Minimalism
  • Microtonal
  • Abstract
  • Experimentalism
  • Avant-garde
  • Non-music
  • Acousmatic music
  • Microsound

Comment: the Greek artist Fani Konstantinidou's issue consists of two sections, however, both of them are about droning, droning and...droning. In fact, it needs very adept ability and exquisite perception to make up something appealing from those highly austere and minimalist sounds. On the other side, if it is an artist's purpose to be staying within the limits of the style it is also a challenge. The Greek artist succeeds in the aforementioned aspects by changing the phases, by minimizing or broadening the linear scope of the droning sound. At times it is minimised down to pure humming electricity, at times it is varied by unstable frequencies. Highly experimental, highly abstract which by its intent reminds of Alvin Lucier's compositions. The outing is a part of the discography of Moving Furniture Records.

  • Art pop

Comment: A Catalan called Aleix Pitarch is behind the nom de plume Ashbrg who has been releasing albums under the imprint Hamsterloco. The label and the project of him is intended to cross chiptune/8-bit/tracker music with more conventional styles. Mostly they succeed in their intention. For instance, the recent issue is a shift between silence and rough pixels of sound, between exquisite synthesised incantations and childish, playful interlude-alike progressions. Maybe I am wrong – maybe it is all about new progressive music? For instance, a track entitled Old Sounds. Pux perros is the main hit for me on this 18-notch outing – it reminds of the organ-led, catchy acid punk of The Stranglers by the main gear being varied with artsy prog music elements. Snap To Grid is more (warped) indie than many bands being called by this tag. Submarine is a great laid-back glimpse into subconscious dreams and heavy memories. Comoperros ya is a cheerful minimal synth number which does mean lots of acerbic effects rotating around the groovy yet obsessive rhythmic backbone. Doggystyle is about more poppy synthesised developments with regard to the previous track. Yeah, all is an enjoyable ear fare.

Comment: first of all, this great album is issued by a Portuguese imprint, Enoughrecords which is apparently the oldest netlabel being active so far. All other netlabels which started earlier and some of those which would embark on later than 2001 are unfortunately defunct now. However, here it is an elegant gross of jagged intelligent dance mould – sorry, music – from neighbouring Spain which is spiced up by galvanized electro riffs and noisy chiptune undercurrents. For instance, an astounding track called 2000 Problems which almost sounds like an electro(nic) version of Gang Of Four (RIP Andy Gill). Superb cyber punk composition where brittle electronic fabric and air are exquisitely balanced to go ultimately up to an ecstatic dance-appealed apotheosis. However, merry companion by robots can be met everywhere throughout the course of this 9-track outing. Even more, it may sound like an indulgence for a fully mechanic world to come when human race could not keep the pace anymore and robots are singular enough...to single out. And those joyous samples from vintage TV adverts just accentuate a steep gap between the different eras, between the past and future. Forthcoming dance party based purely on reason. Pure reason is a pure fun.

Kryshe – Hauch (2019)

  • Art music
  • Ambient
  • Modern classical
  • Improvised music
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Jazz
  • Electronic

Comment: Kryshe is a German artist who likes obsessively operate with silence on different scales like ambient, classical music and electronic music. Furthermore, there are even jazz-tinged incantations and dreamy whiffs based on drowsy progressions. Musically Kryshe reminds of a late Talk Talk more than ever before but I think of it even as a more refined output. It is a subsequent astounding issue (Continuum, a second issue from the previous year) by Kryshe being released on Serein.

Comment: this 7-track outing unveils like an ominous, mystical thing slowly surfacing from the bottom of darkness. Upper layers are imbued with a bright, glaring light, the sort of light brought to us by Lucifer which in turn are amplified by sultry, very tight broken beats in the frequency of breakbeat and techno. The listener can perceive a shitloads of intriguing progressions inside the rhythms and outside on the flank of it like a thousands of legions were dancing around the backbone of The Fallen Angel. This great issue is a part of the discography of MNMN (aka Monumental) Records.

The Hathaway Family Plot – This Is Going To Be Ugly (2020)

  • Art music
  • Experimental pop
  • Avant-pop
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Electronic
  • Post-classical
  • Singer-songwriter
  • Post-industrial

Comment: first of all, This Is Going To Be Ugly is Buffalo-based Kevin McFadden aka The Hathaway Family Plot's pessimistic prediction as they look ahead to the year 2020 in America. I can remember for his first albums approximately a decade ago being released on WM Recordings which were haphazard journeys across different frantic sonic terrains which yet involved decent songwriting with some critical lyrics about topics in his society. Later on, he transitioned incisive noise experiments into more reverb-drenched dreams. Of course, the description of mine is a bit conditional because one and the same elements used to meet on all the albums just being spiced up in different measures and built up in disparate configurations (14 albums in total so far). The music features Kevin McFadden's piano playing more than on any previous issues and fewer toy instruments to be included. However, the aforementioned electro-acoustic songs by nature keep hold the pace on the recent issue either. It is desperate, anguished, painful and highly fervent in its sounds and lyrics. It is all about impending climate catastrophe, allegiance to doubtful authorities, mental and physical pollination of soul and body, respectively. There is a piano which is exploited to play unnerving chords which are amplified with creepy electronics, noisy outbursts and sardonic sonic experiments. All will be changing, all will be the same? The first part of the sentence is obviously true, the same can not be said about the second part – regarding the future of the human race and the music of The Hathaway Family Plot. At least the latter does show a healthy incantation and organic progression based on the previous paw tracks left by him. The former is going on without any control about a destruction machine which unfortunately does live its own life. There's no need to talk about the singularity of the robots because we are already controlled by another, more mighty machine (something analogous has been assumed by Lewis Mumford). Kevin McFadden still presides the sonic process, isn't? Implicitly given that it is beatific and lively.

Makunouchi Bento – Pulsating Resins (2019)

  • Experimentalism
  • Avant-garde
  • Art music
  • Post-industrial
  • Electronic music
  • Avant-electronica
  • Micronoise
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Musique concrète
  • Organic electronica
  • Field recording
  • Abstract
  • Experimental electronica

Comment: the Romanian persona (non) grata's (Felix Petrescu, and Valentin Toma) subsequent issue embarks on with rooster's crow as the signature to enter into a playful liberation of mind. Throughout the course of four tracks a listener can hear slowed-down and barely twisted sonic madness as if encountering either his/her possible nightmares or lush dreams (it depends on). One can hear ghastly echoes, slight metallic banging, hirsute hisses and pleasant sounds coming from the street but the most important thing is the coherent flow and impressive moment behind this crafty experimental work. More profoundly, it does mean lots of emotive knots and compelling sonic effects within the sonic fabric. That's a way of how industrial music should sound in the 21st century (post after post after post). Do not give a fuck to everything except the art.

Dark Frequencer – Hypnotica (2018)

  • Ambient techno
  • Electronic music
  • Organic electronica
  • Dreamwave
  • Field recording
  • Kosmische Musik
  • Musique concrète

Comment: this batch of a couple of tracks being released on Petroglyph Music is illustrated with the cover print of a girl being wrapped up in blue and green-tinged reveries. Part 2 is a sultry blend of hypnagogic techno rhythms, meandering spaced-out synths over a maiden's suggestive vowels as if a dreamy version of krautrock (which is called Kosmische Musik then and the revamped, stark hypnagogic elements paved version of it as dreamwave now). Its exquisite iterative pattern is simply overwhelming. Part 1 shows off more muscles due to a more pounding, incisive rhythmic bone which is surrounded by hypnotic iterations on synths and faint field recording vapor and volatile girlish murmurs. In a word, it is an outstanding release with a practical, remedial power. Try it as the tincture to fall asleep. There is another world, there is a better world. (And if you wake up thereafter then continue with Amon Düül II's Mozambique which does provide an astounding proto-Stereolab feel).

Buben – Distillation (2008)

  • Electronic music
  • Post-industrial
  • Illbient
  • Dubtronica
  • Avant-techno
  • Organic electronica

Comment: this batch of 3 tracks being released on Dadaist Audio is a tight blend of different (poly)rhythmic knots and sequences, reverberant echoes, elliptical dub delays and dark-hued noises. Thirdly, a listener can hear remote, greyish sonic shades hectically coming in and then out. The artist has always been experimenting on the verge of daring intellectual noise and industrial-drenched acoustics and perplexed rhythmic outcomes. Buben is a grandmaster from Belarus who has been releasing music mostly under netlabels like Clinical Archives, Dadaist Audio, Haze, Rus Zud, Kaos Ex Machina Promotions, In Noize, Intox Noize, Protoplazma, Noise-Joy if to show up some of the most well-known ones.

Anémic Cinema - We All Dream, We All Die (2009)

  • Gothic rock
  • Darkgaze
  • Cinematic
  • Post-punk
  • Alternative rock
  • Coldwave
  • Ethereal Wave
  • Darkwave

Comment: I have not reviewed many post-punk albums which could be tagged "cinematic" anyhow. Anémic Cinema (what a great name for a combo!) is one of such acts by straddling on the border of moderate powerful and strongly dreamy, in other terms, it is something which conveys an existential anxiety of one's burden of living and impending descending into death. It may be the former is even worse because the perspective of the human being who could live forever it would be truly horrendous. However, many people act against it as if the rules of cosmic power and Eternity were erroneous and as if we were God-alike creatures. Maybe we are but we don't have the omnipotence of Lord. So we are not ultimately, though. Most of us can see nothing more than just bare shadows on the wall of a cave (reference to Plato). Just like living in an idiot joy showland (reference to MES and The Fall). Thirdly, the drift between life and death is something natural and...dreamy and of course mystical. Like something based on a plot by David Lynch. Thanks to the existence of death one could more appreciate his/her life. These 5 compositions of clocking in at a 24 minute and being a bit of the discography of Zorch Factory Records are a blend of such tendencies previously brought forth by Joy Division, Lycia, The Durutti Column, Dream City Film Club, Siouxsie And The Banshees but showing up their own measure within this trademark of floating atmospheric synths, pounding drums, and thundering basses, and expressive guitar licks. Unfortunately I could find out the issue from within the discography of Zorch Factory anymore so I decided to hint at a Mediafire link.
