  • Experimentalism
  • Downbeat
  • Drone
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Psycho-acoustic

Comment: I have heard and reviewed many Martin Rach's outings but the Lithuanian musician's brand new one surprises me again. I do not know is it either an anthem to the washing machine or a swan song to it but it is an intriguing outing due to improvised themes and downbeat and free jazz inflicted progressions. Yet it is not an ordinary example of free jazz because one can feel it is slightly deviated from it because of a more loose and scatterbrained approach. More profoundly, it is like a DIY instance of free jazz. It contains 17 notches which used to drift between sober milieus and frantic outbursts, at times more predictable, at times less. At Wash My Soul5 (but not only) you can hear the growling drone being surrounded by natural sounds or it can be understood otherwise recorded unplugged and in a natural ambience. I suppose the sound of drone is created by the mouth of Martinas Rakshtinas himself, however, thereby having no idea how it should be named if the human being tries to mimic the sound of an artifical object. For sure, it is not lycanthropy on its own. The latest fact of natural ambience can be broadened to the rest of the tracks as well. In a word, I like the whole very much.

Comment: from zombie-induced backmasking Maggots In The Tongue to delta blues drenched Encordoamento the Brazilian Lucas Pastina's Insanitarius sets a new pace to bring forth his new and crazy ideas for all of us. Why we actually need them? I do not know but I know we need them in a certain way and for a certain purpose. Given that the path of the artist is disparate it is very mind-provoking to follow it. To see how it goes on, to see how it used to meander and dodge in certain moments, how it used to ascend and fade away. It is an ecstatic way to represent one's compelling grips through the sound. Insanitarius is also about insanity and madness as the aforementioned issues but musically-stylistically it can be considered an example of space rock with some reservations. The reservation does mean it can be considered as an example of guitar ambient either. The reservation does also mean it is a bit improvised, it seems not to be determined. By the way, you can hear the aforementioned zombies within the album as well though they are bit more withdrawn because of being buried in a half filled grave. I am very impressed of how some artists like Lucas Pastina can define aesthetic borders on certain albums and develop within these borders. I am way too volatile and haphazard to fulfill it. It is a kind of art. Intensity used to change throughout the 11-track outing but spaced-out influences used to bounce atop a listener's head. Furthermore, you can hear tectonic snoring within the whole. By any means, it is the feeling! Do you think of it you have sacrificed your valuable time to listen to it? Vice versa, Lucas Pastina has sacrificed his own time to redeem your frivolous nature and appease and replace your fake go(o)ds. For me, it makes very sense in the middle of nothing. Nothing as a state of being. Top quality by any means.

Stibium – Turvo (2017)

  • Free jazz
  • Improvised music
  • Experimentalism
  • Leftfield
  • Avant-garde

Comment: this outing of 7 tracks is another unvarnished madness within the free jazz and Improvised music genre. More profoundly, you can imagine a swarm of dysfunctional musicians playing their deranged solos and dejected snippets which are then set to be repeated again and again. Ultimately it can be said it is a crafty statement because those energetic vectors are pushed in one direction. Even if you see it of containing thematically more than just one topic (for instance, at times coming close to guitar-led fusion appearances). You can feel overwhelming power pouring out of any slots. Therefore it can be considered as an example of the demonstration of power within metallic objects as if spending your time somewhere in the junkyard. Otherwise I would call it freeformfreakout but it is obviously an acknowledged phenomenon today. But that's no problem. It is a solid work on Mansarda Records.

  • Ambient rock
  • Synth-rock

Comment: my first impression was it is an arty-farty issue while hearing superficial piano chords moving in front of the scale. In fact, those piano chords were not so superficial and many more layers would be get added to the mix. So ultimately it can be admitted it is very far away of being superficial and simplistic. Karolis Burzinskas who is behind the project adds craftily not only emotively accentuated piano chords and orchestrated templates to the mix but also manipulates with synth-based and funky cadences here and there. For instance, at Sunshine Radio it evokes memories about such Soviet synth-led combos as the Latvian Zodiac (it is still a favourite of mine), and the Lituanian Argo. Of course, If you wish you could also draw parallels upon such post-rock luminaries as God Is An Astronaut, and Bark Psychosis but it is indispensable anyway. As well as those thoughtful and picturesque extended piano chords and orchestrations remind of a late Talk Talk at This Girl. However, Karolis Burzinskas` handful of tracks is an ennobling outing where different kind of shifts between the styles and tempos pitch a game. And the cover print is truly heart-breaking. The release is a part of the discography of Portuguese imprint Enoughrecords, and also a part of the discography of Japanese imprint Bump Foot.

Comment: imagine there upward in outer space there is a ceiling filled in with hanged wind bells which used to chirp different tones and timbres and thereafter these sonic bits will spread over the scale. The ceiling is immensely broad and wide and at times one can hear more malignant reverberations bouncing back from the wall. Is it the vestibule of mayhem? In fact, hell as a location does not exist anywhere but on Earth. More profoundly, it exists among the people, it exists between one's ears. More profoundly, there exist more than 7 billion hells on Earth. OK, I should fix the statement the number is a bit exaggerated because the children are the best and intact part of the human race. The recent 9-notch outing is all about collapsing structures of the mind, about traumatic events, horrendous memories, suicidal thoughts as the artist herself has assumed. Like Moz once declaimed give up life as a bad mistake. On the other side, stupidity, selfishness and foolishness of other people may paradoxically inspire you move on and on the other hand I guess without pain and depression such a great release as this one could have never been spawned to provide us bittersweet pleasure in its dystopic desperation. The issue is a bit in the discography of Silent Method Records.

Roger Plexico – Where The Sidewalk Ends (2017)

  • Chilltronica
  • Electronic pop
  • Alternative pop
  • Mood music
  • Yacht rock
  • Breaks
  • Art pop
  • Space pop

Comment: the Portuguese artist Roger Plexico's 6-notch issue is a special event for those who like to relax while listening to moody yet demanding music. Indeed, the artist's fourth release is thought to all the ardent music lovers. Roger Plexico's brand new one is meticulously designed and mixed up in the way to bring forth a synergistic essence within it. Elements of synth-pop, space pop, sophisti-pop, art pop, soft rock, yacht rock, and chillwave are added to the melting pot to get a bewildering thread. In the described, epic way it used to roll out. In an artsy way, orchestrated and slightly acidic yet certainly stellar synths combined with dusty reed organs do roll over the terrain of broken beat. It can be compared to Air's music though not in direct, compositional sense. With regard to the French duo you can draw parallels on both project's metaphysical desire to expand an inner space and then transcend its borders to get together with outer space. To crumble to cosmic dust ultimately which will be sad and ennobling simultaneously. It is a bit in the discography of Monster Jinx, a Portuguese imprint.

Caroline Park – RIM (2013)

  • Ambient
  • Drone
  • Electronic music
  • Minimalism
  • Sound art
  • Experimentalism
  • Avant-garde
  • Microtonal
  • Live session
  • Experimental electronica
  • Avant-electronica
  • Ambient drone
  • Abstract electronica

Comment: this 2-notch outing consists of interesting progressions based on two lengthy tracks though not much does not happen over there. It is all about minimal progressions, microtonal algorithmic creative events, it also used to play on your imagination and perceptible "mistakes". The first of them, We Can Be What They Are Doing, is a seductive drift between a loaded droning line, and ostensible ambient music. It feeds one's mechanical fantasies, and given that you have not been involved in fantasies yet before the listening you will be involved in that for sure. Your cerebral particles will be bombed with slowly ascending and descending waves. At Live at Soto Studio (8.29.12) the listener can perceive a more audible vamped up sound as if signal-alike vivid bits would play ping pong with one another. It is just a phase of the track because at times the interaction disappears due to melting down into longer signals and hazy drones. The outing is a bit of the discography of Vuzh Music.

LFC – Encordoamento (2012)

  • Blues
  • Delta blues

Comment: while reviewing Lucas Pastina aka LFC's Maggots In The Tongue a week ago it was a case of freaked-out vowel madness without the accompaniment of blues music. Like it was properly ordered by me there is up a set of three tracks called Encordoamento based on instrumental blues numbers. Blues by numbers. Delta blues by numbers. In fact, it chimes like a lengthy blues rock without any interruptions and turns inside hell. Given that the artist's music should be considered as a whole rather than separating some bits from it you can then actually see it as a turn within Lucas Pastina's music. For me, he is an outstanding madman in music from Brazil whose recent release is catchy through those iterative patterns on quite fastly plucked guitar strings. Ultimately I have to admit it is not an ordinary example of blues rock by numbers by considering the premise the abbreviation LFC does mean Lucas Fucking Crazy.

Cecilia Lopez & Wenchi Lazo – Abailable (2017)

  • Experimental electronica
  • Avant-electronica
  • Electronic music
  • Improvised music
  • Experimentalism
  • Avant-garde

Comment: thereafter I had perceived the analogue charm of Death Tricheco's Party Music I felt strong discrepancy with 6-track release (clocking in at a 49-minute) because it seemed to be so modern, straightforward and aggressively incisive. Cecilia had played synths and Wenchi had played on electronic drums but it was being very far away from any kind of electronic device-led pop music. It immediately embarked on with culminating progressions giving no traditional way to progress stepwise into something bigger and enchanting. Later on, the culminating peaks would be reconstructed and you could see more sublime effects and distinctive features covering the bottom. From the top to its very bottom. The electronic gross sonic volume would be minimised and changed into different lines and segmentations having been followed by one another. At the final part the music is being dominated by grayish electronic torrents and intense signal-alike rushes. That's effective. That's the effect. In the final track you would be a witness of the duo's tongue-in-cheek attitude. The ear-provoking issue is a part of the discography of Pan Y Rosas Discos, an active imprint from Chicago, Illinois.

Death Tricheco – Party Music (2017)

  • Industrial music
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Electronic music
  • Leftfield
  • Spoken word
  • Non-music
  • Psycho-acoustic
  • Experimental electronica
  • Hauntology
  • Freeformfreakout
  • Sampledelic

Comment: Death Tricheco is an artist from Italy which started off in the 80s and thereby it can be considered a phenomenon coming from the legion of the so-called old school industrial movement. Immediately within this 16-notch composition I can perceive elements being so truly characteristic to the scene. All those haunting electronic effects, uncanny samples, acidic threads and weird dialogues based on mutant and deviant syllables. Yet all of that will ultimately result in as a light-hearted metaphysical concept because all the interpretations seem to be funny due to a buffoonish approach. I have always appreciated such kind of approach because Big City Orchestra, a Californian combo have been doing it in an irresistible manner since the beginning of the 80s. It is what I would like to consider the most free and anarchist side of industrial music. Just loudly laughing at everything. At Dutch! you can hear lo-fi synth-pop yet it cannot be considered a part of the genre because it is a mocking remark towards it (because of being deliberately way too lo-fi and primitive). It is a reunion of sonic misfits yet preserving dignity through a profound and analytical choosing set even if it is spiced up by hectic noises and freaked-out sequencing. By personal side, I hear there some primitively tapped sounds of Casio Tonebank, a favourite synth. The outing is a bit in the discography of Silent Method Records, a great imprint for great artists.

The Undynamic Pop Experiment – The Undynamic Pop Experiment (2017)

  • Post-punk
  • Punk funk
  • Alternative dance
  • Art punk
  • Dance punk
  • New Wave
  • Prog-punk
  • Brass pop

Comment: by my opinion, punk funk as a branch of post-punk and music in general can be considered a genuine invention by the human kind. The Pop Group, Public Image Limited, A Certain Ratio, ESG, Gang of Four, Blondie, Talking Heads, James Chance and the Contortions. The Undynamic Pop Experiment provides a fascinating set of 5 tracks having been recorded in 2002 in Mike`s apartment yet from this year it has been available for all of us via Free Music Archive. With regard to it and the artist`s Myspace site I guess it is a one-man project. The bunch includes the best elements of dance-appealed punk of highly catchy guitar hooks and strums and incisive drumming with at times painful and at times declamatory singing manner filled in with tickling tension and demonstrative angriness. The final track Part-Time Lover provides highly epic orchestrated and brass sounds in front of the boisterous guitar wall. This track cannot be a part-time lover. Get it. Listen to it. Love it. Rebel with it.

  • Drone
  • Microtonal
  • Minimalism
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Ambient drone
  • Post-industrial
  • Micronoise

Comment: this 4-notch issue provides a different sort of haunting music rather than just coming out of a horror movie. It does not include either shrieks or highly lurking narrative, it is warm and permanent in its endless droning while emitting almost audible shades behind it. Yet it is possible I have hauled in non-existent entities in reality. It may have cheated my perception elegantly due to its iterative nature and elliptical fringes. Yet if the music evokes these ghosts in my head I guess they can be considered as existing ones. As real ones. Yes, it is a philosophical question about the nature of entities. I can hear the very intense soundscape behind these layers yet at the same time chiming in a muffled way. Otherwise it could be a merciless harsh noise attack. Yet the more you listen to it the more it reveals its malignant nature. The pulsating drones beat in my head and will connect with my intellect. The music which makes one thinking of. The outing is a part of the discography of Mansarda Records.

Yaporigami – Loop 1.0 (2011)

  • Experimental techno
  • Glitch techno
  • Avant-techno
  • Minimal dub
  • Electronic music
  • Experimental electronica

Comment: Yaporigami is a Japanese artist whose 15-notch outing is a fine blend of crispy beats, clockwork-alike electronic effects and neurotic electrified wobbling. It is like metal as a material will get elaborated incessantly from one form to another. Stylistically it is a drift between glitched-out techno and minimal dub. The artist has entitled all the tracks as loops but in fact these ones are enduring compositions on their own. The listener is allowed to rumble around across the labyrinthine and boxy channels full of ear-provoking dodges, vivid turns and enchanting rushes. It is the source of dizziness ultimately. It is a part of the artificial world, it may even be a bit dystopic and suffocating yet at the same time preserving its irresistible outfit and inner playfulness. This outstanding techno and dub outing is a bit in the discography of Hz-Records.

Circa State – Homegrown (2017)

  • Ambient pop
  • Chilltronica
  • Poptronica
  • Electronic pop
  • Mood music
  • Post-IDM

Comment: first of all, this 8-notch outing's purpose seems to be arouse one's emotions and sensations. Furthermore, Circa State's purpose is not only arouse emotions and sensations but also create them in the listener's head. However, it can be considered philosophical dispute with regard to the question of which our sensations consist of? And which is the genuine base of them? By stylistic side I would like to prefer the pigeonhole “post-IDM” with regard to its emotional and technical edge. As I have already said it is very moody music and it employs certain sounds from the genuine IDM to foster the soundcape. Those gentle bubble-alike synthesised progressions, acidic microgrooves and atmospheric layers atop are intended to provide an enchanting emotive accompaniment. The more I listen to it the more it will grow on me. Grower. Homegrower. Paradoxically or not, such sort of music does not allow describe itself with many words. Because of that, in a word, just listen to it and enjoy the vibe of it. The decent release is a part of the discography of the Finnish Kahvi Collective.

LFC – Maggots In My Tongue (2010)

  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Freeformfreakout
  • Leftfield
  • Non-music
  • Psycho-acoustic

Comment: it's time to arrive at Lucas Pastina aka LFC's music. The Brazilian persona non grata in music sets up something truly provokingly dysfunctional through these 9 compositions. The more I listen to it the more I feel I am being surrounded by our distant forefathers coming out of the Stone Age. Their dysfunctional speech and lack of articulation do shift the listener's perception through rough vowel effects, let's try to be without any adornments, just spooky moaning. Our dear forefathers as zombies. Do you think such sort of sound has never had any impact on pop music? You are wrong. Some music critics consider Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica the most innovative chapter within the history of pop music. LFC is here without blues, without no musical accompaniment altogether. Just some sonic effects, cold reverberations and sharp clashes are up there to deviate a possibly more coherent impact you could otherwise pick up on it. In a word, it is a ruthless example of sound yet the surrounding life is clearly more remorseless. Moreover, deranged madmen in music used to spill their seminal seeds for the forthcoming generations given that insanity is a driving force to move the ideas further. If you are thinking of the title and the cover print as disgusting you would change your mind by thinking of it as nutritionally highly caloric. You will get nourished. Frankly, it is frantic.

The Bordellos – Gary Glitter e.p (2016)

  • Alternative rock
  • Indie rock
  • Post-punk
  • Art punk
  • Experimental rock
  • Art rock
  • Alternative dance
  • DIY
  • Americana
  • Lo-fi

Comment: it is probably one of the most favourite releases by The Bordellos for me where the soaring dynamics through raw sounds and vivid dodges comes to the surface. It is like The Fall meets Faust in a way. Beaming galvanised guitars and subtle electronics are mingled with sassy vocals and singing manner. Furthermore, having been very characteristic to The Bordellos throughout the discography they used to add fragmented Americana influences to the mix. But not only – the whole Free Download Generation as a track chimes like a piss out Americana pickup on clumsy folk and awkward rockabilly. The most uncanny track is Disco Pants with the offbeat frequency in the rhythmic measure being accompanied by acidic electronics and gravity-free singing as if produced by the unforgettable Arthur Russell. I don`t even know is it either a dance track or an anti-dance statement. In a word, give a heck to it because it will transport you somewhere else from this nowadays overproduced and overloaded pop rock to some very roots of rock and punk music with its own idiosyncratic touch.

Thuoom – Circadian (2017)

  • Ambient
  • Soundscape
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Electronic music
  • Minimalism

Comment: the term "circadian" does mean of relating to biological processes at 24-hour interval. I guess the main adjectives to describe the process are iterative, analogous, unvarying and consistent. The Finnish artist's 10-notch release is thought to illustrate it through the language of sounds. Minimally changing elements and rhythmical impulses within Thuoom's breathing and organic universe. There are up a thousands of ambient releases worldwide but Thuoom's power is to find out an idiosyncratic slot within it. Of course, I have described it a little bit in a negative and artificial manner because I don't think altogether his premise is to face off against someone's music; instead of it his plan is to think off his own sound in an organic and natural way. In general, he employs natural and artificial electronic sounds to bound them together which in turn adds a breathing and thereby mystical substance to the whole (by that point the outing can be compared with such an artist as Alio Die). As the artist's previous issues the recent one has been issued on his own imprint Textural Healing. Quite simple by its initial elements to embark on yet highly impressive by establishing the album as a whole.

The Peach Tree – The Peach Tree (2010)

  • Synthwave
  • Goth synth
  • Alternative rock
  • Industrial rock
  • Electro rock
  • Synth-rock
  • Electronic music
  • World fusion
  • Hard rock
  • Singer-songwriter
  • Dark wave

Comment: The Peach Tree is the solo project of Angus Maiden whose is being known as a Melbourne, Australian maverick in sonic creation. An indie man with more heavy leanings in aesthetic preferences. Throughout the course of 12 tracks the listener can perceive this stylistically wobbling enterprise based mostly on the industrial rock template. In a word, boxy guitars and set-up machine rhythms are intertwined with electronic layers and loaded boats of electrified energy. Yet his grip is remarkably broader due to dodges into murky dungeon synthesiser realm and fragmented and convulsive world music (a fascinating composition called Ganesh) and also riff-based hard rock at Blind. Furthermore, On A River is a profound insight into a beatific moment while spending your time being far away from the civilization and being affected by the natural elements as one's genuine brothers only. Place Of Out is a drift between the aforementioned dungeon industrial progressions and muffled storytelling. Just an acoustic guitar and one phrase singing are up there as a way to partake in meditation being backed up by an atmospheric synthesised layer. In a word, it is a solid glimpse into Angus Maiden's versatile world. It will take you by surprise even if you are listening to it a third or fourth time in a row. It unveils many sonic surprises followed by other ones and ultimately you can perceive the fine balance between the technical and moody side. That's all what we need from a decent music outing.

Viktor Van River – Triumph of Unconscious (2017)

  • Sampledelic
  • Hip-hop
  • Breaks
  • Urban music
  • Rap
  • Chilltronica
  • Mood music
  • Trip-hop
  • Ambient pop

Comment: this swarm of 10 tracks cannot be considered a triumph of unconsciousness only, it is a triumph of music, it is a triumph of voluptuous listening sensations. While listening to it I watched a football match from the TV on mute and the play seemed to be even more attractive. It seemed to be consisting of dynamics while being framed by the nature of still life. That's cool. It chimes partly like the upload of a Moon Safari yet it is a different case eventually due to conveying cosmic electro impulses to the listener`s head. It is an example of very up-to-date pop music which is not going to age in the future. The ending track Word is a decent bow toward Tricky and his Pre-Millenium Tension (1996). Undoubtedly it has been one of the most enchanting issues in 2017 so far and beyond that not being the first entrance by an excellent imprint, blocSonic being added to the list. Viktor Van River is the one-man-project of Viktor Chuprin from Kazakhstan (by the way, it is an immensely better way spending your time rather than watching loathing Borat).

Zelde 743 – Dark Intense EP (2017)

  • Acid techno
  • Dubtronica
  • Acid house
  • Electronic music
  • Alternative dance
  • Psychedelic
  • Post-rave

Comment: I insistently recommend listen to this 3-track outing because it is so fluffy and deep at the same time. Indeed, approximately 20 years ago the last named adjective was employed to describe deep house, and deep techno, for instance. With regard to the term “techno” the set is strongly imbued with acid techno and house influences having been popular in the UK approximately 25-30 years ago. Let`s call it post-rave music. The warehouses are demolished but the memories of them are still up there though slightly blurred and thereof mixed up with other genres either (for instance, the dub influence is also represented over there). The beat is straightforward and loud and psychedelic as if setting out the plan to re-create a new dance revolution. In a nutshell, it is a fairly pleasant listening time being commissioned by Illogical Kit Netlabel. Zelde 743 is a duo from Poland who already started off in the eighties.

Hanetration – Ancients EP (2017)

  • Experimental electronica
  • Space music
  • Ambient drone
  • Ambient noise
  • Epic
  • Ambient techno
  • Deep techno

Comment: when the UK-based artist Hanetration sent me the link of this outing at Bandcamp he said he would hope this album would get enough attention due to its special nature. In fact, all the previous Hanetration`s issues are being idiosyncratic ones with highly leftfield and experimental edges. Yet this handful of tracks may be considered a universe within a universe because I cannot remember for Hanetration would have been chimed in that spaced-out way. I reminds me a little bit of the end of the 90s and the beginning of the 00s in my domestic Estonia while listening to such artists as Uni (“dream” in English), Galaktlan, Von Suck the artists whose oeuvre would like to tag as ulmetronica. “Ulme” does mean “science fiction” in the narrow sense of this word. In the broader sense it is the opposite word to “olme”. It does mean something very usual something that you are doing and you have to do in your everyday`s life. In a more indirect sense, having deal with such sort of sound it is a way to escape, to go elsewhere, it is a sort of transcendental experience. In fact, Hanetration is very kind to provide such sort of sound. In a gross sense, it is a subtle mix of space music, ambient and techno. In a sublime sense, it excels at these borders to create something beatific and otherworldly. It might be that a die-hard fan could find this release to be somehow a compromise but by my opinion it is a new substance of sound in his discography. Indeed, it can be considered majestic but it is not a play of shallow, flat postures; you can perceive something majestically noisy coming out from this magic pot. I am sure it is the most pre-eminent issue by Hanetration at least at emotional level. One of the best issues in 2017.

Aitänna77 – Dried Flowers II (EP) (2017)

  • Breaks
  • Trip-hop
  • Sampledelic
  • Downtempo
  • Cinematic
  • Downbeat

Comment: this set of 8 tracks clocking in at a 17 minute only is based on fragmented and slowed-down (trip-hop) beats being adorned with different kind of speech samples (with regard to music production). I can remember for that the Spaniard Mikel Martínez`s first outings (Health Needs; Buenas Son Tortas) were clearly more post-rock, indie(tronica) and folk(tronica)-tinged, however, this set of tracks is produced to be fully without any guitars (though obviously employing more exotic instruments). (No I am being wrong – 84 Years employs guitars, though). So it can be said the artist will have moved on to new terrains. For me, however, the technical and instrumental side of the albums is not the most important thing in music. I like those cinematic samples which used to appear here at times. Furthermore, it can be said microscopic moody moments are variegated with more arousing, beatific peaks (at Waveforms, for instance). The release is emotionally vectorised. The whole is coherent among its particles you are not allowed to feel a slacker flow throughout the course. Of course, with regard to the contemporary sample-based urban music we cannot deny the influence of Flying Lotus. The solid outing is a part of the discography of Dusted Wax Kingdom.
