Thuoom – Fokus (2017)

  • Electronic music
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Sound poetry

  • Forest folk

Comment: a Finnish musician behind nom de plume Thuoom is back again with his brand new one. His last three or four albums (most of them had been issued in 2016) were quite abstract ones as if recorded with the onyx-tinged needle and cartridge. Fokus resembles more his earlier records at the end of the 00s where he did employ instruments and non-instruments colourfully to set out his aesthetical pieces of cake. In fact, it is a platform wherein much used to happen throughout the course due it seems to be cursed. I am wondering by myself is it either improvised music or determined sound. The term "Fokus" should be related to the last one though you cannot be thoroughly sure because playfulness is an essential part of the 12-track issue. And that's very pro. More profoundly, microscopic schemes are set up to constitute a macroscopic sonic universe and therefore revealing a perfect circuit as the whole. The butter between the parts to be functionally fulfilled ultimately is the aforementioned curse. Or magic. Or witchcraft. Furthermore, Thuoom as an artist represents the idea that all the kinds of sound are music or at least all these sounds could be morphed into music. From inferior crackles, signal-alike humming and cut-up vowels to wondrous droning and elliptically shaped electronic grandeur and techno pulsations at the most minimal extent. It can be considered as a next level within the so-called forest folk scene. On the other side, you can perceive similarities with another Finnish masterminds like Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen. Get it and try to crack the core of this gem.

Moses Luster – The Pre-Apocalypse Years (2011-2015) (2017)

  • Singer-songwriter
  • Art pop
  • Film noir
  • Alternative pop

Comment: it can be said without reservations the LA-based artist Moses Luster is on a full sway on this 15-track outing even though these tracks as residual ones did not appear on his previous issues. In fact, all the Moses Luster's albums released so far are being on full sway. He is being an artist who has made up dirty locals and murky human characteristics so elegantly irresistible through his expressive singing and tough man attitude. Indeed, you can perceive his ambition to change other persons' lifes (I'm the Lion). Sorrow and desperation are his arms to convey hope rather than a burden from every day's life to kill you slowly and painfully. He conveys hope through sorrow, blood, sweat being immersed in tight cigarette smoke and whiskey smell. Some filthy secrets add an extra flavour to the whole. And if you don't like it yet you are going to love it. But not only these facets are represented over there. Shadows Of A Past To talks about the relativity of time, in fact about the question of whether does time exist or not. But some things are not going to change ever, for example the whiskey and the need for it. At times it chimes kinda modern Gospel music (at The Past Is No Place For A Man, for instance). His compelling baritone is backed up by soaring orchestrated sounds, synthetic chords, lonely piano keys wherefrom cinematic swallows emerge to draw epic lines in front of the horizon. Top tier.

Luis Marte / Poltamento – Movil/Inmovil (2017)

  • Modern classical
  • Alternative
  • Electronic music
  • Jazz
  • Crossover
  • Improvised music

Comment: a Steinway grand piano meets electronic software setups on Movil/Inmovil, the collaboration between the Chile and Argentina-based artists Luis Marte, and Roger Delahaye aka Poltamento, respectively. A huge, real instrument meets a virtual, physically nonexistent one. Yet strangely they do meet each other without any complications. The piano chords are predominant leading this subtle 5-track course being accompanied by volatile electronic bubbling, reverberant glitches and the breakable space between these compartments. Call it an instance of a drift between modern classical sensitivity and a (cool) jazz music formation. Given that electronic music is an essential part of modern classical music anyway. Pueblo Nuevo, a Chilean imprint proves with it to have an important place in the world of a thousands of record labels.

Phasetron – 7=5 (2013)

  • Alternative rock
  • Blues rock
  • Hard rock
  • College rock

Comment: at the Daydream Generation (it is a whole universe of very intriguing combos) site it is admitted this album is quite unusual with regard to differentiation in style. Indeed, these 11 compositions are quite far away from more and less quirky folk genre being extensively represented via CLLCT, Quixodelic, and Daydream Generation (all these sites have frequently been or had frequently been joint platforms for the same issues). Phasetron's issue is enough hirsute and powerfully galvanised to get instant attention. It harks back to classic rock tradition of getting energy from muddy and dirty blues rock even if many songs are balladry inflected and slowly paced ones. On the other side, it can stand for contemporary college rock influences which used to water down a little bit its ferocious facade. Instead of it I would like to hear more stoned and demented garage and garbage induced madness. However, the combo's choice can be understood as a possibility of realising slots within the music. Moreover, it will open the doors to enter into AOR stations. So partake of something.

  • Avant-pop
  • Spoken word

Comment: indeed, David Lynch has been back for a while through his music (The Big Dream (2013)) and the revitalisation of Twin Peaks in 2017. However, he is also over the place thanks to tributes paid by others to him. For instance, the recent 13-notch outing by Etterem which in turn is directly inspired by Lynch's book Catching the Big Fish (2006) by arguing on how to suppress negativity and bring forth more positivism in one's life. The main idea is to do it through meditation. On the other hand, it should not be messed up with Dale Carnegie-alike books of which quixotic appearance to hold on the main theme provides no viable duration. Musically it is a very interesting issue extending from plunderphonics and mash-up elements to sultry post-punk thudding and the most pre-eminent thread, Celtic music progressions in many variations, through microscopic noises, provoking sonic effects. At times those numbers chime in a mind-blowing, majestic way as if The Pogues or The Dubliners were produced by Simon Jeffes himself. Furthermore, there are also up more roots related numbers full of minimalist beauty and austere yet uplifting magic. The aforementioned post-punk and electronically induced numbers do demonstrate specifically Lynch's mystical, dreamlike nature towards the art. By citing Lynch the issue shows up contrasts and turn on the lights (read it as music in the recent context) and darkness goes. The release is a part of the discography of an Italian imprint, Nostress. No stress.

  • Drone
  • Epic
  • Experimentalism
  • Ambient drone
  • Minimalism
  • Avant-garde
  • Dark ambient
  • Post-classical
  • Crossover

Comment: slow down and go further. Slow down and show up your inclination for new conquers within the sonic art. Your very inclination for developing an area wherein minimalism meets dark hued and deeply immersed ambient and majestic post-classical buildups full of less and more remarkable shades and distinctive borders. Of course, additional elements are also represented to be added to the mix (some field recording and glitchy compartments). Moreover, you can follow classical drift between noise and silence, between an existing and Nothing. Aside the metaphysical point of view it might seem like an endless iteration within a set of determined particles yet I have to admit the impression of the whole exceeds the set of its particles due to existence of synergy between the different parts of the whole. The word "between" does mean a gentle following one part or section by another because it is focused on horizontally parallel moving. The gentle outing is a part of the discography of an imprint, Petroglyph Music.

FailedSitcom – Of Life's Declivity (2010)

  • Lo-fi
  • New Weird America
  • Free folk
  • Freak folk
  • Weird folk
  • DIY
  • Electronic
  • Singer-songwriter

Comment: this bunch of 11 short-running tracks represents a modern folk scene called New Weird America being seminal throughout the 00s. At the end of the decade one of the juggernauts of this style Animal Collective went into clear-cut poppy electronic music so you can see influences coming from the previous years before it. Audibly there are up plucked strings mixed up with sublime male singing, mellifluous glockenspiel chords and sweet electronic progressions. Its rustic and simplistic approach reminds of music under such DIY-based platforms as CLLCT, Daydream Generation, Quixodelic Records and Rack And Ruin Records. By famous kindred souls this Sam Durkin's outing can be compared with CocoRosie, and Vashti Bunyan. Much has changed since then but we can remember for it with bittersweet nostalgia. Its lyrical message can be pessimistic but musically it is a pleasing experience. Get his another issue, called Her Blameless Mystery as well on the same link.

Headsnack – Alternative Facts EP (2017)

  • Hip-hop
  • Remixes
  • Rap
  • Urban music
  • Electronic music

Comment: Alternative facts are something related to the term "post-truth" being emerged out after the last presidential run in the USA. Of course, it is primarily being used against Donald Trump though its practice could have harked back to the beginning of political practice I guess. In other words, some governors tend to be authoritarians, many of them are governed by bureaucracy and financial power though faking out as if the representatives of their nation. I have no exact idea is it either inspired by Donald Trump or about making politics or democracy they pretend for in general but it is said in a very critical way anyway. By my side, the media is totally fucked up and the best way to handle this is just to ignore it. It is filled in with propaganda and half-truths, the so-called alternative facts. Some of the visionaries like Stephen Hawking, and Elon Musk are talking either of rubbish things or annoying trivialities of which you did know before or topics which are clearly unreachable or hypotheses which cannot be verified. You are sleeping you do not want to believe. This 11-notch consists mainly of remakes and remixes of Alternative Facts, the first two of them are instrumental ones (at least in my music player) and some tracks do have a little in common with hip-hop and rap (that`s OK in the face of monotonousness). For example, Google Knows (both versions). The outing is a part of the discography of blocSonic. Behind the project is New York-based Regenerated Headpiece.

Baradit – Electro Lines (2017)

  • Ambient pop
  • Electronic music
  • Synthwave
  • Alternative
  • Krautrock
  • Electro pop
  • Crossover
  • Yacht pop

Comment: it is great pleasure to be back again at the discography of a Chilean quality imprint, Pueblo Nuevo. Baradit's 9-notch issue is a fabulous blend of futuristic funky rhythms with gleaming shades and smouldering downtempo vibrations and decelerated ambient echoes. Moreover, one can hear iterative, motorik rhythmic structures and minimalist progressions which remind of Neu!, and an early Kraftwerk. At times it is highly moody and sunshiny, for example, at Crita, resembling strongly yacht pop drives. And of course, there are also represented electro pop elements but it is a fact of obvious kind that electro pop is represented everywhere in music today. Lots of synths, some guitars, iceberg tinged epic orchestrations, spidery cadences make you feel the whole is somehow special.

Alejandro Rojas-Marcos, David Area & Tomás Gris – Trails (2017)

  • Improvised music
  • Experimental electronica
  • Avant-garde
  • Sound art
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Experimentalism
  • Microsound
  • Microtonal

Comment: lots of noises being variegated with spans of silence and penumbras mixed of them. From noises to silence, and vice versa. From acoustically warped instruments to noise signal generated electronic dodges. At times the compartments are separated, at times they are superimposed to one another. This minimal approach has much in common with music being provided by early pioneers of electronic music of having experiments with such instrument as theremin. This is austere, rigid it is certainly an example of formalism rather than allowing an entrance to emotive music. One of them is operating in front of a clavichord, one of them is generating electronics, and one of them is playing soprano sax, viola, cello, and objects. It could be said, it is an intriguing blend of instruments. It is the course of this 3-notch outing being a bit in the discography of Greece-based Plus Timbre.

Negritage – Greetings from the Planet Dub (2017)

  • Dub
  • Reggae
  • Dancehall
  • Raggamuffin
  • Mood music

Comment: this set of 17 tracks is created by the Argentinian Negritage and their numerous collaborators, and any of the second notch is collaborated by a new artist (Yuuri Bamboo, Christina Polycarpou, Ibel Campbell, Jam York, Sammy Gold, Mandlion, Med Dred, Haji Mike, Eter Dub, and Zion Irie). The whole is related to the reggae music, and its subgenres and derivatives. It can be a fine soundtrack for a sunshiny summertime, for your lazy time, to be ready to do nothing. Just to make some drinks and listen to such a sort of music under sultry sunshine and while thinking of himself/herself as an alien as the (mis)interpretation of human being. Indeed, we as human beings are not here to stay for a long time therefore our duty is fight for truth, peace and love and for a better live, for our children and next generations. That's the chain of reincarnation wherefrom you are not allowed to withdraw. Therefore we are here and everywhere under the eyes of Him. So celebrate the life with its relentless ebbs and tides. It is a formula of life. That`s okay as long as you know. This merry outing is a part of the discography of a Cyprian imprint, Dub-O-Phonic.

SUICIDEFORCE – IYE12 (2016)

  • Hardcore
  • Trashcore
  • Lo-fi
  • DIY
  • Powerviolence
  • Grindcore

Comment: what could be main impulses behind an inclination to commit a suicide? I guess these can be hopelessness, hatred of people and him/herself as a cursed exemplary among them (among the other cursed ones), overwhelming anxiety and distress coming out from an unknown source and falling fatally over one's head. By listening to this short-running 6-notch issue one can feel physically all the aforementioned distresses and inferior state of moods. It reflects upon mental terror in a very direct way. From the start to its very final pier. It does not take care of you it disseminates its paralysing seeds. Because of that, you shall have to be warned, it might not only be a reflection of suicide machine, it might be a suicide machine on its own. By the way, terror is everywhere where stupid bipedals used to walk around. Terror is a native son of stupidity regardless some cynical and evil creatures may be thinking of themselves as wise ones. A monkey is a stupid monkey. This torrent of overmastering anxiety is a part of the discography of In Your Years. It is powerful, it is violent, it is elegantly horrendous.

ʞık – Wormhole (2016)

  • Krautrock
  • Alternative
  • Electronic music
  • Minimal techno
  • Experimental electronica
  • Abstract
  • Minimalism
  • Sound art
  • Kraut-techno

Comment: the press notice of this issue by the home imprint Bump Foot is very short: ʞık (Karl & Karlik) is an experimental improvisational duo from Russia. Wormhole consists of three minimal tracks, although it lasts 45 minutes (the last track is a 32 minute long one). Indeed, the last track is called Einstein who was a German scientist (of Jewish heritage) because he was graduated within the German educational system and being a part of a thought paradigm within the German scientific world of which influence is hard to overestimate. Why I am talking about it because these 32 minutes used to hark back to other German influences in later times in music, more profoundly, in krautrock. Of course, krautrock as a phenomenon was a disparate one ranging from minimal traditional rock instrument driven sound (motorik) to more spaced-out synthesiser based travels (Kosmische Musik) and more abstract, experimental electronic terrains (in theory they can be divided in that way, in practice it is much problematic to do). The latest named compartment being championed by the likes of Conrad Schnitzler, Organisation (a pre-Kraftwerk combo) and Asmus Tietchens can be a home pigeonhole for the Russian duo as well. It is built up on slowly changing sound sculptures, at times quite abstract and austere when music changes into smouldering electricity and vice versa and then providing rhythms and interesting sound effects to give in to more colours, mind-blowing phase shifts and effects. Furthermore, the issue can be considered a vital link between krautrock, and (minimal) techno. In a nutshell, it is a truly solid and arousing outing indeed.

Monkey Warhol – The Darwin LP (2017)

  • Electro pop
  • Alternative dance
  • Electronic pop
  • Electro punk

Comment: after releasing a bunch of EPs in the previous year the oldest human being (and the musician either) - check out the description of him at his Bandcamp site - is back again with the first LP proper. And it is another highly dynamic outing having been listening and reviewed today. More profoundly, this frantic set of accelerated tempos, college pop and pop punk tinged singing and either glimmering or acidic synth pads are adeptly mixed up with a tongue in cheek attitude while avoiding to be somehow lame, simplistic, annoying, and banal. For instance, Manscaping as a track might have been inferior if it would have been produced without a humorous element. Early Mornin' chimes like a revitalisation of Rednex's goofy country disco. It is followed by Everything Starts With an E being enchanting and danceable at the same time within the soup of glimmering synths and a motorik kraut-electro cadence. If Green Day, or Blink-182 used to sound in the way like I Get What I Want sounds then I would have great interest for their music. The 10-track issue will be finished off by Waiting, an electro pop punk number with catchy hooks and a broad appealing factor. In a word, the album is produced by a creature with a high IQ with regard to music, and humour, and incisive understanding to blend them seamlessly into an one. Top predator by any means.

BESTSELLER + FRONCE de BONQUE - "SPLIT N°3 (2009)

  • Broken beats
  • Alternative dance
  • Electronic pop
  • Post-dubstep
  • Sampledelic
  • Hip-hop
  • Electro pop

Comment: this bunch of 12 compositions is a split release being issued by an intriguing record label, Vaatican Records. Behind the split are FRONQUE de BONQUE, and BESTSELLER, the both of them delivering 6 compositions. There are many ways of how to approach the whole but I would prefer to describe generic mood and appearance of it. Given that the artists' aesthetic is quite similar. First of all, the release came out in the end of 2009 and my proposition is it happened to be ahead of its time. By my opinion it's a sort of pop music though a tricky one. It is filled in with different sorts of broken beats which in turn are (heavily) imbued with digitalised soul music, hip-hop glimpses, slightly haphazard breakbeat torrents, oval-shaped sampledelic art, and even post-dubstep rhythms though the style was not publicised at that time yet. Furthermore, at I Got Your Keys by FRONQUE de BONQUE one can consider it a weird twist of free jazz. Another composition which must be heard is Singapore by BESTSELLER. Very impressive indeed. However, there are no weak compositions on it. These 53 minutes are to have passed by very quickly due to the high rate dynamic flow of exciting bits and beats. Perfect accomplishment.

Rasalasad – Thisturb (2017)

  • Illbient
  • Dark ambient
  • Micronoise
  • Post-industrial
  • Leftfield
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Glitchtronica
  • Neoclassical
  • Drone

Comment: this handful of compositions is somehow eerie and spooky as if depicting an area being devastated either by an enormous catastrophe or horrendous terror. It does not mean these five soundscapes are directly harsh and abusive, vice versa, one can hear slowly droning templates being surrounded by glitched-out bits and gritty noisy frequencies in upper templates. However, there are also represented more harsh torrents to bring forth the contrasted sensibility between it and murky beauty of droning and minimally orchestrated neoclassical segments. The point of mine is all of that is craftily equilibrated within the whole providing either no excessive information or useless and sterile dodges in the sonic terrains thereby avoiding decline in quality with regard to the concept and sound. I am inclined to think off the title "thisturb" refers to disturbing state thereafter (i.e after a catastrophic event). The convincing outing is a part of the discography of Tape Safe.
