Gloss. - Trophy (2011)

  • Chillstep
  • Trip-hop
  • Crossover
  • Art pop
  • Folktronica
  • Psychedelic
  • Alternative
  • Urban music
  • Electronic music
  • Mood music
  • Chilltronica

Comment: so after being finished of listening to Experim3ntus` Korruptio I opened the window of my living room again to get more air for the Mexican producer Gloss.`s issue Trophy. If to join these words together it could almost be pronounced as “catastrophe”. Luckily this 6-track issue is not catastrophic. It is the quite contrary. It is also an example of urban sound though being more synthetic, beat-oriented, acidic and psychedelic in comparison to the aforementioned issue. Mostly because of that these sounds do not have common part with those ones which do come from the street and natural surroundings. So you could open your window. Musically it provides pure joy from start to end – it is tight enough due to chilled-out and trip-hop-alike beats which used to vary in heaviness and at frequencies, acidic synthesizer undercurrents and flickers and a folktronic fabric. For one it might remind of the Beta Band due those sultry folk and electronica mixed developments, for an other person it might be similar to Portishead, and Massive Attack. For a third person Jimi Hendrix is going to haunt him/her. It is not surprising at all because the trip-hop combos leaned frequently and strongly on the tradition of rock music and even directly took samples from there. Otherwise you could hear those heart bleeding melodic progressions which induce the listener longing for something which inevitably is passed by and it might be even passed away (more evidently brought to the fore at New Destination, and Dry Land). This enchanting 6-notch issue is a chapter within the discography of Fusion Netlabel. Additionally to great music it is supported by the witty outer sleeve.

Experim3ntus – Korruptio (2011)

  • Ambient
  • Electronic music
  • Darkwave
  • Soundscapes
  • Crossover
  • Kosmische Musik
  • Glitchtronica

Comment: Experim3ntus had released three Eps before he changed his nom de plume to another one, Vuohe. Under the new name, though, he was just revamping old compositions. The Finnish producer`s 5-track issue Korruptio is remarkable due to unifying the visual side of the cover print wherein one can feel sensations of late autumnal uneasiness due to representation of higher concentration of fog and clamminess than usual annually. Musically the listener can perceive vivid drifts between majestic ambient panoramas and eerie darkwave sweeping being immersed in heavy pessimism and impending tough and morbid times. That’s chilling. At times those suggestively epic templates are slightly “corroded” by samples, “accidental” noises, glitches, and other treated sounds. By the way, it is an especially right moment to listen to in the early morning when the Sun is still being eclipsed and greyish darkness and tangible humidity are in full sway. It must be said surprisingly I had to close the window of my small living room because all those outer noises merged seamlessly into the soundscapes. Maybe sometime in the future I will review it in the described manner. It might be a composition called Ajan rakenne on MUUTTUNUT (in fact, the title of the track is even longer) carves out from the rest because of coming very close to the classic tradition of Kosmische Musik though excelling at Tangerine Dream-alike templates in the first half only. The latter part of it will slowly be changing into a dormant yet rocky glitched-out soup. This is an astonishing bunch of elaborately accentuated compositions. Get it and additionally I recommend listen to his other issues (Experim3ntus EP, and Autius EP) and Vuohe`s Yksinäiset Vuohet, and Bleat Runner (which involves a new version of Ajan rakenne on MUUTTUNUT) either. The issue is a part of the short discography of Gabumat Records, which involves the Finnish music only.

Captains Of Sea And War – Captains Of Sea And War (2016)

  • Alternative rock
  • Indie rock
  • Power pop
  • Art rock
  • Post-rock

Comment: it is always great pleasure to arrive at the discography of the Nethelands-based imprint 2419 Record Label due to the quality and diversity of aesthetics. In fact, you will never know what is the next turn in sound you while picking up on the discography nonetheless the issues are described with some hinting tags. For instance, the last outings being reviewed at Recent Music Heroes Basnie`s Les Pays-Bas (2008) was a haunting yet stupefying blend of spoken words, electronic music, post-classical progressions, tango, found sounds, drone pop, which in turn was imbued with a retro-futurist sensation. Tunnelbird`s Hohner Sessions (2015) takes up on blues influenced psychedelic garage rock with hints at raga and acid rock. However, with regard to the first named issue the recent issue is a starkly disparate case because of getting a booty by riding on the guitars and drums which at times are complemented by by hoarse, tortured, and softened vocals by the occasions and recherché keyboard stumbles. More profoundly, those eight alternative rock and post-rock and art rock drenched numbers from Barcelona, Catalonia used to swing between loud and lofty riffs and more restrained strums being at times converted into a blissful still life. By the way, the release will be finished off by a mellow acoustic ballad. In a word, the collaboration by Gerard Gual, Jose Martinez, David Montón and Àlex Garcia places it into a column of other solid releases of 2419 Record Label.

Pollux – Naked Lights (2016)

  • Electronic music
  • Dark electro
  • Illbient
  • Neoclassical
  • Dark ambient
  • Lo-fi
  • Experimentalism
  • Crossover
  • Avant-garde
  • Synthwave

Comment: I guess these 17 minutes are as interesting as the life of the Frenchman Arnaud Barbe being known as the prolific musician Pollux, and heading the popular experimental music imprint Sirona-Records. Indeed, these 1036 seconds are the truly intriguing which in turn can be compared with a cross-section of the records. It could be said he is here a little bit more self-indulgent in comparison to his other ones, or at least most of his issues, because it consists of disparate musical styles frequently. For instance, ominous ambient progressions are followed by free form synthesizer or MIDI-led emulation-based improvised snippets. Even some lo-fi and primitive music cuts are represented over there. Let’s add some electro-acoustic experiments with buried piano chords (or are they the prepared strings rather?) By their own point these are very interesting sounds but they create an additional value due to those mind-blowing transitions and then relations between the aforesaid styles. Last but not least - if the lights are naked then all is naked beneath and within it. Thereof the fun is guaranteed, life is beautiful and give it a proper place.

  • Art rock
  • Post-punk
  • Experimental rock
  • Avant-rock
  • Ambient rock
  • Electronic
  • Dance rock

Comment: I have to admit that before listening to this set of 6 tracks I have heard nothing of these artists. The first impression of mine was visual and it was very funny – by watching this blurred cover print it was something like collaborating men behind the mixing desk, one of them looking like Chuck Norris, and another like Johnny Marr (a young Johnny Marr, in fact). Why not – both of them are outstanding persons. Just the most intriguing question is – who will knock down and win? However, the collaborative act does not remind of the doing of The Smiths (the best combo having ever been existed under God’s sight) but is related to a style of which The Smiths is being associated. Indeed, it is post-punk, one of the most seminal styles for all times, which in turn was a godchild of Krautrock. At Ten Four, and Eight Two Oh Eight the influences of atmospheric guitar by Vini Reilly (Durutti Column) can be discerned. The latter one is more rhythm-oriented either, though. And the result rhythmically is very catchy. Ring Finger is another astonishing glimpse into enchanting world of flickering guitars and mechanical rhythms. Be Home At Dark might be the most expressive track due to its thudding programmed beats but on the other way it reconstructs a pathway of post-punk music because of embracing elements which did have evolve from the embodiment of post-punk. The mother meets her derivatives. In a word, this is grreeeaaaat! Being a part of a platform with a funny (again!) name, Believe in Billy Records.

Not Ensemble – Capsicum Before Bed (2016)

  • Abstract
  • Ambient drone
  • Illbient
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Sound art
  • Drone
  • Acousmatic music
  • Improvised music

Comment: this 11-track issue conjures up off-kilter associations within me. One could imagine he/she is dreaming a nightmarish dream where he/she is thrown by an omnipotent creature to slide across a perfectly slick floor having no possibility to stop and then escape from there. The surrounding around you is dejected, rigid and horrendous until you will wake up. It is the kind of ambient music of signal-based noises and amplified electro-acoustic debris. Furthermore, at times it provides somewhat of such kind of twists one have no conviction of whether it was real or just a fruition of his/her imagination. Given that, quite ironically I could tag it as mood music because it does have much more power than most of the so-called mood music albums though doing it on totally disparate principles. Maybe those vibrant sounds which used to emerge here and there might even be considered as psychedelic ones? It is getting even more ironic by considering the fact the issue was generated by the Dronedario software. It could also bea admitted the relation between the particles and the total sum of the issue is not fixed at all which even more does befog the borders. The issue is a part of the discography of the Italian Triceratupuz Lab.

Olah Istvan – Signals to the North Horizon (2009)

  • Avant-garde
  • Glitchtronica
  • Experimental electronica
  • Soundscapes
  • Ambient

Comment: the Serbian composer Olah Istvan`s one track issue consists of 872 seconds which is inspired by the North Pole by its coldness, beatific radiance, and clear heaven atop those massive icebergs and polar bears. Undoubtedly it is something which stays beyond borders of our every day life. It is a totally disparate world. By starting listening to it I was not aware of his influences for this issue. Instead it aroused me to think of it as a situation of remote future which is imbued with mechanical insects, enthralling rhythmic ticking, and abstract chirping. One could experience strange warmness oozing out of those hypnotic layers and glitched-out noises. One might have experienced similar sensations with Tim Hecker`s early recordings like Radio Amor, and Haunt Me, Haunt Me, Do It Again. You could hear the ambience around you to breath and swell while adding new knacks to the blend. Coming in and then flutter around your ear. It is a hyper-realist glimpse you are get caught in. Fairly astonishing effort for sure. The issue was a part of the discography of the Russian-based Lomeanor which had been active from 2008 to 2010.

t e l e p a t h テレパシ – 能力者 – 向かい合って (2014)

  • Chillwave
  • Seapunk
  • Glo-fi
  • Alternative
  • Indie
  • Mood music
  • Future soul
  • Soul
  • Screwed and chopped
  • Dreamwave
  • Vaporwave

Comment: I guess such sort of music could be considered an example of contemporary slowcore even if the contemporary people would denote it with the following tags like chillwave, chopped and screwed, seapunk, vaporwave etc. The artist takes much time to present his state of mind through those drowsy and languid meanderings; the length of the pieces ranges from 8 minute to 56 minute (sic!). He is like a spider who likes to seduce the victim and then eat him/her. However, I couldn't resist it because boredom is conjured up in such a way as if converted into the fluid of cerebral chemistry. It is sticky and tight by its consistency being haunting due to those slowed down vocal deliveries and drum pads and guitar chords. In comparison to the aforementioned slowcore genre it is slowed down for twice at least, chiming more like a freaked out soul delegate from the future. Indeed, it sounds like a harbinger of future soul drifting across the one and the same thread. I guess Ariel Pink's first issues could have been sounded it that fascinating way if being slowed down. But it is not an important point in that case. Once again, I am enthralled by the branching of the physical boredom of austere chords and somehow haunting sensuality coming out of it. It is a sort of minimal music, isn't it. The minimal sort of music of the zombies with regard to the penultimate track, for instance. What will be the next big thing with regard to the production side? Maybe intense states of madness and fury to be stretched out and then converted into the sonic files? I guess it could be a reasonable way to give music another spin in a contemporary key. In truth, there are up some more overtly chilled-out compositions either where the twisted point is more repressed. In a nutshell, it is a wondrous issue, which obviously does have its own disciples as well. For example, listen to Florian Wahl's brand new one 14.

Tutan Come On – Tutan Come On (2013)

  • Hard rock
  • Doom rock
  • Trash metal
  • Hair metal
  • Hair rock

Comment: it might be problematic to say much words and columns about this 9-track issue because it seems to be rolling upwards and then downwards, then upwards, and then upwards the mountain's slope in a powerful key. On the other hand, it is an intriguing listening because one is thrown in the middle of a burbling whirlpool of lively vocals done in Basque, those heavily pummelling drums and sometimes doom-ish guitar induced colours and thumping basses. Indeed, it is quite unusual to listen to this campy hair metal tinged falsetto with those sooty drenched guitars at the same time. You know, there are up some topics like love, women, cars and sleek clothes represented excessively, i.e. resulting in kitsch. Indeed, it induces an amusing and thereof positive resonance within me. Fortunately the virtuosity by the band members did not kill fun within it. It chimes like a group of hair rockers from the 80s having accidentally found themselves in the time machine and landed in the 10s.

Tunnelbirds – The Horner Sessions (2015)

  • Psych-rock
  • Raga rock
  • Alternative rock
  • Garage rock
  • Indie rock
  • Acid rock
  • Blues rock
  • Lo-fi

Comment: first of all, it seems to me that Beer Bottle Blues is the most rocking issue throughout this 10-notch issue. It reveals the combo to be at their most acidic and dynamic. The other tracks might be more restrained, at times veering into the intonation of sordid blear-eyed blues/boozy rock (at Today I Lost My Job), at times making up more raga tinged incantations, at times just jolting and rattling through fluttering wah-wah guitar effects and linear chord manipulations being at times stretched out, being at times pitched-up therefore creating a psychedelic effect. At times it does not reach a magical effect, especially at the time of more acoustic moments, but mostly it succeeds and acts upon the listener. Especially in such tracks as I Don`t See It In You, and Dark Side. Minute Songs exploits some grunge-y riffs but fortunately it evades the borders of grunge music by straddling on a blackened layer of blues rock. Given that you shall have to listen to it to decide whether is it your cup of tea or not. For me it is a cup of coffee. Tunnelbirds is a combo from Utrecht, The Netherlands and the issue is a part of the discography of 2419 Record Label.

  • IDM

  • Alternative
  • Indietronica

Comment: before listening to the recent issue I got caught up in listening to the Russian Messer Für Frau Müller`s Happy End Dead (1992), and the English post-punk legend The Fall`s Sinister Waltz (1985) on tapes, both of these issues could be considered cynical and misanthropic ones. In any cases, it influenced me enough to look at Null`s 5-track from a perspective of cynicism. More profoundly, the release is being without any words, and there are represented soothing piano chords, some blissful orchestrations and dreamy harmonies and lead motives. However, it is “ruined” with rugged glitched-out rhythms, clockwork and movie camera-alike pastoral sounds and almost tangible interactions between the stereo channels. At the moment I am representing the view from a perspective of a mainstream critic though I would rather prefer the recent issue coming out the mainstream scene. The only cynicism and laziness I cannot stand for with regard to the outing is that the guys behind this issue have not been able to manage the rest of the catalogue of Hand Craft. What the heck, is it really hard for you guys to upload it at Archive.org, for instance? It is a crime against the music, you know.

  • Indie pop/rock
  • Alternative pop/rock
  • Indietronica
  • Synth-rock
  • Art rock
  • Post-rock
  • Electro-indie
  • Singer-songwriter

Comment: although Alexander Strung`s 9-track issue Party was issued lately on the verge of the 00s the influence of some parts of the epoch could be heard throughout these 26 minutes. It seems to me that these slightly restrained indie pop songs are influenced both by the Rhein-area indietronica/neo-krautrock scene by the likes of To Rococo Rot, Pluramon, Kreidler, Tarwater, Lali Puna and the US-based post-rock scene by the likes of Mice Parade, Mercury Program, Sea And The Cake, Jim O`Rourke, The American Analog Set. It is the balanced sway between the guitars and synthesizers, between sensual vocal lines and programmed stomping drums and hovering pastoral orchestrations on a minor scale. On the other side, the artist is searching for relaxed balance between technological luxury, and emotive susceptibility. Given that the technological luggage embraces an innumerable amount of possibilities it is arguably not easy task altogether. In a word, the artist demonstrates adeptly its musical skills being not separated from emotions fortunately. The favourites of mine are Olympic Twin, Black Rabbit, Party (What's The Point), Valley Forge. There are up both Alexander Strung`s issues via The Gifted Children. In a nutshell, it is an astonishing one.

Syntech Vedeneev – Tonehammer EP (2013)

  • Tech-house
  • Deep house
  • Remix
  • Minimal techno
  • Club dance

Comment: it starts off with the original mix of Tonehammer, which is tech-house by its style though it is getting even more sympathetic thanks to it the rhythm is syncopated with a funky propulsion. The following notch My House deserves its name because those lofty and hazy sensations coming out of the sound used to mingle and culminate in the deep house frequencies. The style is good enough to use it for yourself to fall asleep instead of eating sleeping pills. Fuck off the drugs! Music is the best remedy against any of kind of mental distress anyway! Its Party Time used to sway between the channels being more minimal and restrained in comparison to the previous ones. However, the first opinion of mine might be the disillusion because one can perceive a slowly winding rhythmic structure to be progressing and coming to fruition with the assistance of kick drums. It like the tension between the primitive and the sophisticated. That’s very catchy it could be said ultimately. The EP, which was issued on DAST Net Recordings three years ago is finished off by a Kratos` hazy remix of the title track. It is elegantly hazy because of exploiting more external sounds and vowel effects which make sweeping movements across the soundscape and adhere to the hypnotic cadence. In a nutshell, it creates the fascinating surrounding around the listener, I guess, in the face of different periods of the day. It is much better and more haunting one could expect before listening to the first chords.

Comment: maybe I am remembering wrong but the Frenchwoman Nathanaelle Hauguel is setting the pace to be even more experimental and electronic with any following issue. However, with her 28-year old age she has done much enough because it is hard task for someone to enumerate all her issues at Bandcamp. It is the privilege of an artist to be remembered for always and differentiate from the mob with her/his distinctive ideas. It is a striking listening because there are up different elements of contemporary indie music. Indeed, it is really up-to-date because this 8-notch issue could be divided into two sections. There is up the surging acid rock of Adelaide Crescent, there are up Stopthefellow II, and Off The Veins which are tickling minimal synth numbers. Feer is an expansion of the previous pieces coming to fruition with angelic pop chord progressions and a tight yet spherical synthesised layer. The first 7 compositions and the last one Saturn Returning, which comprises almost a half part of these 33 minutes. Of course, it does not mean that there can be no dividing line between the first pieces. Any of them is special with poignant moves and impetus and robs you yet the last one is a step into another world with those analogue-based (or analogue-alike) fabric of dusty keyboards and minimalistic rhythms being more similar to such artists as Oneohtrix Point Never, Emeralds, Steven Hauschildt, M Geddes Gengras, and Tim Hecker. In a word, Saturn Returning is a subtle minimalistic composition based on a cut-up chord progression, which might even remember for Penguin Cafè Orchestra and Daniel Figgis by its feeling and touch. In a nutshell, you shall have to make hard work to find out other such outstanding issues as it is from the year of 2016.

Taiki Ozawa – Ritmo De Hydra EP (2016)

  • Techno
  • Breakcore
  • Electro
  • Crossover
  • Alternative dance
  • Industrial techno
  • Hard electro
  • Deep techno

Comment: honestly it is hard to decide what kind of music is predominant on this 5-track issue clocking in at a 33-minute. At times it is about sleek electro, at times about suave deep techno, at times just about fast-paced electro and techno mingled progenies (for instance, at Dos). A characteristic being common to all this bunch is a lurking milieu hovering and flowing atop the rhythms. At times it used to be not lurking anymore, having metamorphosed into clear industrial-tinged noises, echoes and hisses, and crackles. At Tres the artist makes up a sonic mayhem of hard, obsessive electro beats, smashed crackles, lurid noises which used to gravitate towards the black hole eventually. It is followed by a remix of the track by Czech Spigl, which is more relaxed and laid-back though providing similarly the obsessive outlook though doing it in other key. However, as we know the mixed things are at best frequently conveying aspects coming unexpectedly and emphasizing some weaker aspects in compositions. In a word, it is one of the most bewildering rhythmic issues in 2016 being released through Cicuta Records.

Enkephalin - Scntst (2016)

  • Folktronica
  • Dubstep
  • Post-dubstep
  • Electronic music
  • Remixes
  • Electro
  • Experimental electronica

Comment: the opening track The Darwinist chimes as a whimsical blend of folk-based guitars and acid-drenched synthesizers and tectonic rhythms yet the piece does not set the pace for the rest of this 9-track issue. Later on, the guitars are abandoned or at least withdrawn to a lesser trajectory and massive dubstep frequencies and exquisite post-dubstep cadences being imbued with some electro flickers are about to going to predominate the first row within it. However, Galileo is another track where the guitars are to come back and zap a composition. The Belgian artist has a proficient touch to wrench these beats and frequencies in the way of finding the ending point in the listener’s brain and heart and coccyx. That is most important. The issue is ended up by a set of three remixes by the likes of c0ma, Andrew Course, and Max Greening aka Flatland Sound Studio. I like a remix of Tesla`s Dream created by Flatland Sound Studio, which used to sample hilariously enthusiastic words with the operatic kind of singing. In formal, it is not mentioned as a studio album but rather as a case of EP plus remixes. However, the result is grand in its rhythmical alchemy and moody meandering. The issue is a part of the discography of the Argentinian Abstrakt Reflections.

Comment: if you feel yourself a bit dejected then the recent issue’s minimal nature might be suitable for you as a remedy. Not only this aspect is substantial with regard to the roughness of the outing. You could imagine a post apocalyptic vision, for instance, the moments after the mighty outburst of a super volcano wherein the lava is getting to harden slowly and all will be clearing and brightening around the immense epicentre. Undoubtedly it could be a wonderful glimpse. Indeed, there are up some hopes about the situation to be getting improved. The buildup of the issue supports all the aforementioned words because of being adeptly expressive. The first tracks of the debut album Ритуал (Ritual) by the Ukraine-based combo Вежа Хмар (Vezha Khmar/Veja Mar) draw solely on raw drones of low frequency as if it had been recorded with the assistance of a grimy cartridge. Later on, however, the situation is imbued with brighter sounds, for example, with vowel hovering and vibrato-laden droning. Furthermore, the more the issue is coming to its finishing point the more you can perceive exalting emptiness (or is it broadness?) oozing out from everywhere. I does not foretell us a new beginning at that point but the new beginning has already existed out the re for a while. Musically it is a drone album with vague hints at ambient/illbient and succumbed psychedelic music yet there somewhere around you could discern the ghosts of post-rock, post-folk and doom coming closer and then fading away at a time. In a word, the result is striking and impressionistic in its sublime roughness. This great issue was initally released on Mariupol-based imprint Bloodhead Production.

Comment: just breath in and be ready to start off listening to this 7-track issue though there is not much happening at all. It is based on shrill guitar twanging and intoning by a slacker musician called Chris Bading from Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. By mentioning his slacker side I meant only his aesthetical, primitive approach. Otherwise Chris Bading is highly prolific I guess you have no time to enumerate all his issues at Bandcamp, for instance. It could be said the recent whole chimes like being played as one homogeneous piece. However, having gotten many listening times behind I would compare it with some kind of acoustic session by an archetypical grunge man wherein the listener can discern more colours rather than just being a monochromatic flicker. At times his attitude is being more relaxed, at times being starkly desperate and emotionally strident. As we know very well the premise of one sort of art is to be spawn across the spiked way with tears, sweat, and pain. As a result of psychosis and the instability of a state of mind. In a word, it is a quintessential home recording example where the guitar and enterprising will are needed to demolish the prototypical blueprint of masculine man with guitar. Yeah, it reminds me of a sweet span of time in the end of the 00s when such artists started to appear to the limelight. The issue is a part of the discography of Eye Machine Recordings.

Comment: undoubtedly electronic revolution in music in the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s did have a huge influence on major genres, including jazz music. Furthermore, it made possible to carry out new flows within a new paradigm with the help of electronic music, club dance, and other styles. It was the time to spit out such styles as acid and nu jazz. Later on, such labels as Ninja Tune, And Rune Grammofon, for instance, directed a part of jazz music across different trajectories. The former of them searched for such impulses being brought out from the human being’s inner space to intermesh them with cinematic panoramas and colourful imaginations and softened rhythmic alchemy. It could be said the Bulgarian-based Dusted Wax Kingdom imprint was obviously strongly influenced by it, however, to establish its own universe to exist on and having influence on others. One planet in this galaxy is this 8-notch outing, which is important enough because it conjures up a moody surrounding around the listener. Otherwise it is a soul-amusing platform for crossing different genres with one another. More profoundly, cool jazz meets with hip-hop and rap meets chilled-out electronic frequencies meet whimsical spoken word slices meet medieval flute sounds now and then. Indeed, you did hear it in right way – medieval sounds interlaced with other ones. One can imagine the spherical sonorous layers to be alight to get fun from some innocent mundane sins. At times the listener’s heart gets shredded by those beatific orchestrations and blissful moves of lead motives. In a nutshell, let’s download it to your music folder to be adjusted with other other releases from the discography of Dusted Wax Kingdom or the ones of being a mere but solid bit of the aforementioned imprints. And there is the great coverprint by any means.
