Ada Rave Cuarteto – La Continuidad (2011)

/Jazz, Improvised music, Bebop, Downbeat, Free jazz, Experimentalism/

Comment: the Argentinian Ada Rave Cuarteto`s 10-track issue does have predisposition to drift between mild downbeat chord progressions and smoothly produced bebop numbers and on the other side toward more tumultuous, thudding free jazz torrents. Having shift between silence and noise. The tumultuous element can be divided into two parts – it can be depicted as a dynamic enterprise of manipulating with only acoustic instruments in a frenzied way or having more static and quiet, even an obsessive viewpoint upon it. Although following their own impulses and aesthetic convictions the quartet`s playing technique is obviously a designation toward such cutting edge jazz musicians as Theolonius Monk, Anthony Braxton, Eric Dolphy, John Zorn and Ornette Coleman. All in all, the result is thought-provoking and moody.

Tramuc And Darius - Rebirth Of Time (2014)

/Improvised music. Piano music, Downbeat, Experimentalism, Free jazz, Cool jazz, Electro-acoustic/

Comment: this album coming in at the length of 33 minutes is a nervous, convulsive one due to its contrasty facets brought forth relentlessly in series. More profoundly, quiet cool jazz caress and downbeat-alike stasis for humble souls are varied with boisterous piano, trombone and cello induced interactions which sometimes are spiced up with expressive glockenspiel-based adornments, electro-acoustic snaps and murky electronic fabric (for instance, dark ambient hovers are presented at Black Hole Mystery). It can be concluded it is a fine exemplar of experimental jazz adeptly depicting the time`s two sides – stasis and change. The album is part of the discography of Pan Y Rosas Discos, a record label dedicated to improvisations/jazz and art/experimental music.

Cagey House – Second Sight (2014)

  • Free folk
  • Weird folk
  • Avant-folk
  • New Weird America
  • Sampledelic
  • Sound collage
  • Art music
Comment: Baltimore-native Dave Keifer aka Cagey House has been a prolific artist issuing at least 15 albums since 1999. He is one of the main icons regarding netlabel based music. A shitloads of records who had issued his outcomes are already disappeared but he is still here to delight the listener. When he started to produce his sound it was formally electronic but chimed rather like a modern indie rock combo. However, later on his sound veered into a haunting, more experimental approach full of haunting art house-y milieus and uncanny but catchy melodies atop. However, his previous one Pistol Vest (2010, MAV 0kbps) seemed to be a turn forward due to more psychedelic and improvised set-ups and soundscapes. And now Second Sight denotes another dodge in stylistic approach of him. Keifer sound has never been so folk-ish, though, heavily, blended with sonic effects, orchestrated glides, warped ambiences, 60 and 70s-alike female singing manner and vowel experiments and electronic ploys. Moreover, his recent approach is minimalistic relied on a couple of sonic algorithms and repetitive, even a little bit autistic samples regarding most of these 7 compositions represented over here. Fairly amusing and relaxing.

Art Brut - Art Brut (2013)

8.7

/Improvised music, Jazz, Chamber music/

Comment: Art Brut is a trio comprising Frank Wilke, Andrè D, and Vasco Ribeiro Morais. Their 3-track album consists of seamless drifts somewhere in between improvised music/free jazz and more contained (cool) jazz chord progressions. Of course, the trio`s release reminds of Miles Davis` aesthetics driven by the trumpet sounds and an endless array of key changes. The difference comes in on the strength of spoken word snippets loaned by Morais himself.

Cagey House - Rocks And Feathers (2013)

9.4

/Avant-garde, Experimental electronica, Improvised music, Electronic pop, Experimentalism, Sampledelic, Psychedelic, Hauntology, Art pop/

Comment: Baltimore, Maryland, USA-based avant-garde artist Dave Keifer is back with a pair of brand new ones. Here is one of them, delivering a batch of 7 tracks which consist of ghostly ambiances, undecipherable vowel effects, weird chord progressions immersed in flanged and pitch bent electronic whirlpools. Furthermore, Keifer shows off keenness to subtle cool jazz esque developments which are interlaced with each seamlessly and at ease. By the way, it is not surprising provided that the album was issued on improvised music/experimental rock label pan y rosas. However, if to compare it to the previous albums there can be found many similarities with Lark (2009, Free Range Beats). Great that the legend is back at its best.

Volcano Radar - Refutation Of Time (2013)

9.1

/Improvised music, Avant-rock, Experimental rock, Electro-acoustic, Fusion/

Comment: Volcano Radar is a quartet (Julia Miler, Elbio Basilari, Harrison Bankhead, Avreeaye Ra) whose work Refutation Of Time comprises one lengthy, 29-minute composition which is made up with the assistance of a bunch of strings and the aesthetics of improvised music. More concretely, the whole segues from rough electro-acoustic improvisation and bristled slightly rolling (steam) blues to free jazz near fluttering and free jazz/fusion-alike tendencies.

Wozzeck - Zieht Das Kind An Sich (2013)

8.9

/Abstract electronica, Avant-electronica, Drone, Noise, Experimental electronica, Sound art, Noise drone, Experimentalism/

Comment: this set of 3 lengthy pieces is composed of abstract shadows, drilling drones, noise-induced impulses and dense, electrified soundscapes of glitch-y bits. Methodically the whole used to base on incessant phase changes, ascending layers and uncanny semi-tone rhythms beneath all of that. Thanks to Ilia Belorukov, and Mikhail Ershov.

?alos – Ricamatrici (2012)

/No Wave, Avant-garde, Experimentalism, Musique concrète, Noise, Psycho-acoustic/

Comment: behind this project is a frantic woman from Italy, Stefania Pedretti whose 13-track issue is filled with cutting edge tendencies, however, experimenting with nihilistic warbling and operatic singing, manipulating with concrete sounds, sonic effects, and sublime noises. The result is as big as her previous one, called Recordi Indelebili, though, having no spot directed upon art punk/post-punk experiments and power. There can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Meredith Monk, Joan LaBarbara, Maja Ratkje.

?alos – Ricordi Indelebili (2012)

9.6

/No Wave, Dada, Anti-punk, Noise rock, Avant-punk, Avant-garde, Chamber music, Art punk, Experimental rock/

Comment: though this batch of 13 notches by the Italian musician Stefania Pedretti was firstly issued in 2006 on Bar La Muerte it is still actual at the recent time due to its essentially rebellious patterns, irritating sonic bugs and incisive effects. More concretely, Pedretti manifests toward her audience in an obsessive and arrogant way being backed up with distorted guitar riffs, acute electronic torrents, rigid chamber-induced processings, and dance rhythms which in fact are not thought to have further intention toward the disco venues. Her nihilistic approach can be compared with such female artists as Diamanda Galas, Lydia Lunch, Maja Ratkje. But not only to hint at them - there can be drawn parallels upon the likes of Sonic Youth, Public Image Limited, Gang Gang Dance, and Mark E Smith (The Fall).

Sarah J Ritch - String Theory (2012)

9.4

/Chamber music, Abstract, Drone, Modern classical, Electro-acoustic, Minimalism, Experimentalism, Experimental electronica, Crossover, Avant-garde/

Comment: Sarah J Ritch`s 5-track issue is a crossover album which is managed in a way to lead it up to the consolidation of modern and traditional, doleful cello music and experimental, at times even aggressive electronic or electro-acoustic processings which wake you up from a lethargic state of mind. These minimally treated vibrating impulses are spectacular, filled in with divergent power and intensiveness, however, ultimately ready to ascend or descend into remote, abstract universes.

Last King Of Poland – Follow Lonely Roads (2012)

/Electro-acoustic, Avant-garde, Experimentalism, Noise, Acousmatics, Avant-electronica, Abstract, Non music, Sound art/

Comment
: Last King Of Poland is Tomasz Jurczak who explores the realms of ragged electro/psycho-acoustics, ghastly noise in a pair of long-running progressions. More concretely, there are represented interesting vocal-based developments amplified with profound reverbs and the shapes of repetitive formations or hammering at metal and edged, noiseful electronic effects on the other side. Indeed, at times the parts of it are truly obsessive. However, the result seems to be bigger than the sum of its particles.

Snorkel Quintet - 3 (2011)

/Improvised music, Fusion, Experimental rock, Avant-rock, Live session/

Comment: Snorkel Quintet is an improvisation/experimental combo descending from the southern part of the American continent. The 2-piece session was recorded at LAKarraka, extending from gravelly sonic patterns, synth-conjured lunkers and restrained, metallic-hued electro-acoustic ambience to galvanized progressions based on motorik fusion and delicately drawn feedbacks. In the meantime some subtle flute-based wispiness and kind of sampled subtlety can also be apprehended for.

Call Me On The Allophone - Nite Train (2011)

/Avant-folk, Experimental folk, Chamber music, Slowcore, New Weird America, Improvised music, Weird folk, Psych-folk, Alternative/

Comment: This is a split album by two crazy gals with guitars from USA. Call Me On The Allophone is a nom de plum of Kendra Calhoun who used to torture and wring her guitar, started out on "broken", angular guitar chords which step by step get evolved into a broader vista accomplished with tense, elemental hiss skrees behind it. Anyway, it creates the sense as if the whole were played up in an angular channel somewhere. The more the Walk On Wine comes to its finishing point the more bewilderness it used to show up. The second track by Teaadora picks up a more singer-songwriter-based approach dripping it with vowels (singing?), having acquired a very low level-based shift surrounded by highly stuttering, elemental noise. The last track is the collaboration of both at a festival taking on queasily improvised schemes where the influence lines between folk and electro-acoustic-ness and improvised music and high-registered singing will be clouded away.
