Binärpilot - You Can't Stop Da Funk (2006)

9.0

/Chiptune, Electronic pop, Robopop, 8-bit, Funk, Electro pop, World fusion, Poptronica/

Comment: popular Norwegian producer Alexander Støver aka Binärpilot`s 4-track issue does encapsulate a wide range of styles and genres veering away from 70`s Bowie-esque funk propulsions and contemporary rnb appearances to more precise electro cadences and mechanic groove appealed territories where robot-tweaked rhythms are traded to sawtooth and squarewave-shaped rhythms, and on the contrary. There is also up the third dimension which is closely related to slight world music/Orient-fused progressions where you experience both Jewish and Arabic patterns. In a word, we can´t do it.

Depth Affect/John Cassettes EP (2006)

9.2

/Indietronica, Alternative dance, Big Beat, Experimental electronica, Organic electronica, Electronic pop, Remixes/

Comment: this album comprises a loads of remixes which used to shift over the territories of indie and electronica, searching for some mild opportunities to land and seat itself in a more appreciated location somewhere near the centre of the indie scene. More concretely, at this 9-piece album sizzling synth bits and dance-appealed electro vibes surrounded by ringing yet mechanical guitar chords and syncopated vocal/and rap snippets have the deciding role to play in perceiving and teasing. The listener can detect the remixes by the likes of OffTheSky, Mitchell Akiyama, Melodium among others.

árbore - Apenino & Raro (2006)

9.0

/Free folk, New Weird Europe, Weird folk, Indie folk, Experimental folk, Drone folk, Avant-folk, Freak folk, Sound art/

Comment: àrbore, the Spanish-based musical project provide 9 notches, all of them are instrumental and genuinely experimental progressions. In addition to treated guitar-based outlet a wide array of instruments are proudly represented there. For instance, arpeggio-laden guitar chords are accompanied by melodica-based drones and glockenspiel-based subtlety can be found from there. Furthermore, the whole starts off with sophisticated sound art-esque developments which can be categorized "abstract" if to regard folk-tinged things in narrow sense of this word. On the other side, àrbore`s sound does not follow the common understanding of folk music at all thereby rather being a solid representative of the New Weird Europe scene.

Nekrasov & Iversen - SPLIT SERIES #2 (2006)

/Sound-art, Electro-acoustic, Avant-electronica, Noise, Abstract electronica, Microtonal, Experimental electronica/

Comment
: it is a mesmerizing experimental/avant/abstract electronica/sound art split by Moscas Nekrasov, and Jan-M Iversen. The narratives of both musicians consist of the seeds of ragged electronic and micronoise blended plateaus, senseless yet compelling signal throbs, and changing rhythm sequences, all of that is wrapped up by electro-acoustic ambiances. Altogether, the whole is an intricate and intriguing configuration issued on a cult Argentinian label called Planear in 2006. In a word, a classic one which needs to be polished from dust by listeners.

Malandrómeda - Os Estranos Sempre Traen Malas Novas (2006)

Malandròmeda

8.4

/Hip-hop, Rap, Urban music/

Comment: this is a set of 11 notches chanted in Galegian, a regional language in Spain. Mostly tough and straightforwardly hitting, though, including a loads of intriguing elements and finesses.

El Senor Ciuf Ciuf - As Seen From Above (2006)

/Indietronica, Art pop, Avant-pop, Electronic pop, Poptronica, Crossover, Experimental indie/

Comment
: at the first sight or seen from a remote distance the aesthetics of El Senor Ciuf Ciuf seems like an indietronic one, yet, if you have a more tight focus upon it you can see very joyous elements and effects evoking from within it. The listener can detect Faust-alike brass and free jazz and art rock mixed frantic rock jams, quirky synthetic pop appearances which used to have no temporal anchor jutting out from itself. From this aspect the Italian musician`s outlet can be compared to the likes of Ariel Pink, and Gary Wilson, for instance. Furthermore, at times it is driven by effortless, electric piano driven snippets and compartments and as an example of his pop contrast because he used to take on a more acute, devouring and choking noise`n´tronica (The Unspeakable Chant of A Collapsing Universe). In a more general way, the listener can detect how experimental yet joyous rhythms can be housed in the same pigeonhole. in a word, such an eccentric but highly mesmerizing gem was created in 2006. An unsung ghost from the past.

RantZen - Inzi Ma Mul Kar b/w Oyo Vor Keskva (2006)

/Club dance, Experimental electro, Gore-electro, Avant-electro, Experimental techno, Avant-techno, Dark electro/

Comment
: actually not very much time ago I discovered a Sydney, Australia-based label, called 4-4-2 Music which used to publish an intricate rhythm-based vista of club music which apparently does have more experimental approach and angle than usually in the abovementioned field. There are up a pair of tracks which constitute intensely thudding bass-driven oscillations in the vein of murky electro and massively stomping techno music. However, Andy Rantzen`s music is witty and whimsical. The cadences are decorated with subdued, even moaning (indecipherable) vocal lines (the influences of goregrind????) and some constitutive sonic effects within it. The issue is a classic one which is directed upon the listener`s body and soul. This is our gore-electro.

Telafonica - Morpheme EP (2006)

/Electro-indie, Leftfield, Alternative, Indietronica, Experimental indie/

Comment: behind Sydney, Australia-based Telafonica are Adrian Elmer, David Hughes, and Marcella Hughes. (Adrian Elmer, for instance, is at the moment more known as a prolific reviewer at Cyclic Defrost, one of the coolest webzines all around the world). However, 6 years ago Telafonica functioned as a combo mixing up bouncy yet mesmerizing electro beats with slowly evolving indie scaffolds which are infiltrated with somewhat sound, hirsuit layers. After many laps on it you can admit all these 5 tracks are on the ball. A classic (whose longer version is available at Bandcamp).

Yeyo Moroder - Yeyo Moroder (2006)

/Krautrock, Lo-fi, Psychedelia, Crossover, Avant-rock, Experimental indie, Experimental rock, Psych-folk/

Comment
: The Mexican Gerardo Monsivais aka Yeyo Moroder`s 9-piece album is about how motorik can be twined with lo-fi-tinged folk and indie music in excellent way. More profoundly, all these offbeat repetitions, chopped-up effects, noisy yet spatial feedbacks are set up in a way to create a lopsided whirlpool involving the legacy of the likes of CAN, and Faust (though, the traces of the latter may be perceived even more). Furthermore, the listener can be a part of the fingerpicking of American Primitivism and shoegaze music. All in all, the result is excellent. The issue was released in 2006 on Umor Rex, an Mexican imprint.

Clinker - Isolation

Dadala - Dreams (2006)

/Improvised music, Noise, Experimentalism, Avant-garde, Weird pop, Post-industrial, No Wave/

Comment
: RDunlop is an avant-garde musician who has been active since the mid of 80`s exploring the boundaries and realms of experimental music. On Dreams he takes on a wide array of genres and sounds, veering out both natural and synthetic, running across both sparse and overloaded ambiences. However, I am wondering how he is able to change those patterns permanently and seamlessly, being sometimes very relaxing through mellow jazz/downbeat standards and, on the other side, get involved in noiseful, soil-engorging mayhems. Or how he used to mix up pitchbent layers with found sounds or being obviously subjected to improvisatory algorithms. In between those extremities you can be a witness to the No Wave-alike explorations (reminding of Tuxedomoon, for instance) and malignant ambient.
