Makunouchi Bento - Himette (2003)

9.3

/Electro pop, IDM, Experimental electronica, Mood music, Ambient techno/

Comment: MB is a duo from Romania whose 13 piece album`s cornerstones are angular IDM beats and loosely dangling electro rhythms which in turn are embellished with glitch-y dust and industrial vapour. On the other side, the album includes fascinating emotive narratives and joyous reverberations or used to get involved in more experimental exercises (with shuffling drums and abrasive guitar riffs or built on voices which are reversed and treated) or exploring atmospherical realms with the help of  rhythmic structures and spoken word parts. In a nutshell, the listener can say the whole is a craftily balanced album drifting in between technological level and solid emotive approach.

All their broken hearts – A tribute album to Julie Doiron (2003)

9.2

/Indietronica, Compilation, Improvised music, Covers, Alt-folk, Indie folk, Post-rock, Folk indie, Singer-songwriter/

Comment: this 28-track cover album is dedicated to the (French) Canadian singer-songwriter Julie Doiron by an Belgian-Canadian record, called Paper Heart, however, stylistically veering away from more or less whimsical indie/alt-folk contemplations and straightforward punk-ish forays and freely composed off-kilter appearances to soothing electric piano-led soft pop and fine electronica-tinged indie pop/post-rock examples and heartfelt, intimate singer-songwriter-ism. There are represented tracks by such artists as Snailhouse, Neil Haverty, Tino, Melochrome, nude, Call me Loretta, MEN, Evie, The Radiators (if to name some of them only). In a nutshell, the miscellany is on the ball.

Lufth - Tendenzen (2003)

9.1

/Trip-hop, Dub, Breaks, Experimental electronica, Chill out/

Comment: undoubtedly a label called Thinner was one of the first netlabels who had provided qualitative kind of dance rhythms and broken beats. This 4-track publication takes on sublime, slow-paced pieces including mainly acidic trip-hop progressions and glowering dub-moulded mist, however, involving some acoustic chords in between the aforementioned styles either. In a word, the set is rich emotionally and sensually. It is truly worth to be remembered.

Julies Moron - Mr. Nowhere (2003)

8.7

/Sampledelic, DIY, Experimental electronica, Lo-fi, Experimentalism, Nu jazz, Mood music/

Comment: Julies Moron is the nom de plume for the Estonian artist Tanel Põld who had got involved in musical activity in the first half of 00`s when he had produced a handful of releases. This issue includes 13 short-running instrumental pieces which used to shift somewhere in between jazzy, laidback electronica and more tumultuous/experimental developments (including the frequencies of cut and paste aesthetics, noiseful antics, some out of gravity appearances) which is infiltrated with the kind of lo-fi/DIY aura. For instance, A 100 Year Dream sounds like an excerpt taken out from a Meredith Monk`s notch.

Hazardous Guadalupe - H.G (2003/2009)

8.8

/Improvised music, Psychedelic folk, Free folk, Psych-folk, Avant-garde, Experimentalism/

Comment: it can be labeled as an instance of freaking folk and improvised jamming which consists of the squeaks of undecipherable instruments, psyched-out guitar twangs and trance-induced drumming thereby drifting somewhere in between 60`s psych-folk and kind of 00`s New Weird and on the othe rside between acoustic primitivism and more treated vistas. Indeed, this 11-piece outlet is a gritty aspiration to search for some genuine synergical borders. Anyway, If I think of the kindred souls of the group such bands as Vierivä Viiksiportieeri, and Uton come to mind.

dreKu - In Homine Natura (2003)

/Cybergrind, Cut and paste, Grindcore, Brutal metal, Cybermetal, Sound collage, Hardcore
electronica, Experimental metal, Hardcore, Crossover/

Comment: this project obviously comes out from Chile, South America having been active since the end of 90`s. By analysing the titles of notches and the coverprint of the particular album there can almost be sure about a fact the release is militantly arranged and channelized for. More profoundly, there are up 8 short-running tracks which are designed for to be certain battlefields for elliptical guitar noodling, punching a little brassy/corroded programmed blasts/machine gun-alike shooting and threatening bass lines. Furthermore, it exploits a huge array of samples (spoken word snippets, electronic bits, brass forays) to variegate and provoke the soundscape. On the other side, it pretends to be a bridge between metal/grind and hardcore (and) electronica/cybercore and, if you wish, sound collage/cut and paste. Ultimately, the result is a mesmerizing one. Let`s call it guerilla metal.

Stark Effect - Mic In Track (2003)

/Experimental electronica, Breakbeat, Indietronica, Hip-hop, Conceptual, Weird pop, Cut and paste, Crossover, Breaks, Sampledelic, Experimentalism, Avant-garde/

Comment: Stark Effect`s music ranges across a multitude of aspects of electronic music - from lush and relaxing electronica to more brooding and whimsical endeavours regarding the rhythms and upper layers which are infiltrated with spoken word snippets and humour (for instance, Bunnyrabbits, Satan, Cheese And Milk). Or Stop! I`m Watching TV which crosses the loops of guitar twangs with chopped paces and the entitled assertion thus blending indie, hip-hop, and funny glimpses with each other. There are up 5 notches wrapped up in 18 minutes. In a word, it is a quite weird, unconventional shit. It is not surprising at all because it is allowed to be issued on the legendary Comfort Stand.

Twizzle - Soda Fountain (2003)

/Electronic pop, Sampledelic, Plunderphonics, Cut and paste, Sound collage, Crossover/

Comment
: Twizzle, a Seattle-based duo (Sir Mildred Pitt; Spacecake) had issued their debut 4-piece composition on the legendary Comfort Stand label in 2003. The issue is spectacular because of involving the elements of a diverse array of styles and genres, taking on chanson, art pop, downbeat, electronic pop,ethnic-tinged endeavours, crossover, however, all of that is made up of cut and paste/plunderphonics aesthetics. Piano-based careless tickles are represented there along with captivating orchestrations which will dominate in the senses of the listener. Especially outstanding is Black Elk Mountain which includes Bond-esque orchestration snippets and murky trip-hop-soaked vocals and paces. The more you listen to it the more it gets captivate you. The duo`s aesthetics can be compared with the likes of People Like Us, Pogo, Ergo Phizmiz, and Chenard Walcker.

Dimaension X - Loco-Motives (2003)

Archive.org
Dimaension X

8.2

/Metal, Progressive rock, Fusion, Crossover, Crust-punk/

Behind this project and issue is David Lanciani, a profilic musician from the USA who is used to combine diverse sound elements with each other - for instance, inserting the samples from video games into metal music, lo-fi-esque synth sections are set over billowy gears of progressive rock, and even for contrast moreover, some soft rock minutiae and fondness for flaky progressions are showcased here. Yet, the album is just one station for to be moved further to another station.
