Son of ZOG – Son of ZOG (2019)

  • Improvised music
  • Avant-rock
  • Psychedelic
  • Experimental rock
  • Space rock
  • Krautrock
  • Psych-rock
  • No Wave

Comment: if you would like to differentiate Son of ZOG from ZOG then the first one comes chronologically after the latter by providing frantic sax improvisations in the embodiment of Phil Allison, additionally to Christophe Medina (the drums), Jonny Zchivago (bass), and Nadine Aleman (electronics). Indeed, one and the only Jonny Zchivago, by far the most important (my favourite blogger, of course!) behind Die or D.I.Y is involved in these projects.
What to say about this 10-notch outing? It is as intense and voluptuous as a wedding act between an innumerable number of venomous snakes in spring. It spits poison, mud and semen to oil a conventional drum and guitar configuration into economically a scorching but artistically blossoming underground act. Otherwise, getting inspiration from acts being depicted at Die or D.I.Y blog the likes of Glenn Branca, CAN, nihilistic old school industrial projects, obscure post-punk and No Wave acts (of showing up frequently inclination toward any kind of aesthetical transgression). I don't guess the combo has knowingly followed any aforementioned or not mentioned group more detailedly yet one can inevitably find out some similarities because before that so immense amount of music has been produced to blow up the servers in future. Putting aside my smartass brouhaha just find time to listen to this untamed flow of instruments and perceive frantic states of mind on the bottom of it. The issue is a part of the discography of Year Zero Records.

Comment: Ben Chasny had been a central figure within the New Weird (America) movement during the 00s due to his one-man-project SOOA. Beyond that he had been involved in a group called Comets on Fire which in true made a bit different sound. In late times Ben Chasny has come out with a thread of albums consisting of tracks, alternate takes or aborted realizations having no place at disposal of Drag City, his domestic imprint. One of those miscellanies, Losing Tracks Of Time, nonetheless, used to sound indistinguishably as brilliantly in its enchantment as his premium outings. It might be the shell of these compositions is a bit more furry and bristled but it is as racy and arousing as before it used to be. It may be more guitar-centered due to guitar twangs and less involved in manipulating with a tone generator gizmo and electronics and prepared treatments. He steps against sublunary cravings and earthly vainness by playing iterative, trancey themes of Eastern influence. At times this silence is broken by blows in a scall therefore creating a dynamic counterbalance between the opposite sides. The latter side of Chasny`s can also be considered a positive one, a successful attempt to expel foul ghosts from inside out (do not ask for anymore is this evil either autonomous or dependent on weaknesses and impairments of a human being). A favourite of mine is Just A Little Fire which has been managed to encapsulate wobbly, galvanized sonic crust around tamed singing and an oppressed guitar. Another favourite King Coming By Carriage is a transcendental reverence to the fathers of the American Primitive movement and raga music being indivisibly mixed together. This solid 11-track outing is released on Hermit Hut which I suppose is Chasny`s own record.

Mhenwhar Huws – Body Control (2020)

  • Electro-acoustic
  • Drone
  • Improvised music
  • Experimentalism
  • Avant-garde
  • Improvised noise

Comment: Mhenwhar Huws is a quarter from Glasgow, Scotland who perform both acoustically and amplified. Body Control is their first brand new album though having released a couple of live recording issues before. Given that the quartet employ a viola and violin beside electronics, double bass, and the percussion someone may expect to stumble upon Faust and Tony Conrad`s frantically iterative violin-based collaboration revisited. Nope, it is a bit different case, it seems to be quite agro-nutrient (some exceptions of noisy whiffs, though) in a restrained handling of their musical gear. As if being played in a local bar for a panic-struck audience who are certainly about to leave the locus soon. For sure, it is not about pub rock in any cases and some inveterate drunkards would in a deranged state of mind think of police cars to arrive at. Even if Steven Anderson starts to sing at one and only Mhenwhar Huws it is even more unbearable on an uneasy mode of singing and convoluted drones nearby. In general, the 9-notch outing seems to be fed into an electro-acoustic distillery which mostly is about processing the sound and at a time will come to a churned-up fruition (the above mentioned noisy outbursts, especially at Static Contact and oblique drones). I like it.

Alessio Ballerini – To Its Beginning To Its End (2013)

  • Ambient
  • Electronic music
  • Drone
  • Organic electronica
  • Ambient drone
  • Chamber music
  • Musique concrète
  • Field recording
  • Microtonal
  • Abstract
  • Post-classical

Comment: Alessio Ballerini (born 1980) is being an intriguing ambient/drone musician having been active since the end of the 00s. My first meet with the Italian's music was listening to Blanc (2010, Zymogen) where he collaborated with famous Austrian guitar alchemist Christian Fennesz on a track. Given that To Its Beginning To Its End is the very topic of ambient and drone music/or tightly mixed up with each other then the exploration must have been obsessive either in sequencing the templates or manipulating with microscopic elements. Any element represented within this whole of 4 tracks signifies something by adding weight either alone or changing its place within a configuration. At times the course gets an abstract turn due to having the static and faint abrasive hisses running around, at times moving towards a most exuberant realisation by incorporating the sea waves into the blend. At times the aforementioned elements are magnified, and vice versa, by significant piano incantations. And it is something which can be considered an impulse to help one break on through to the other side. The listener can hear sonic waves upsurging and then decreasing in volume until there is silence. Even those vibrations being added to the rear part of a sonic progression make up a change I would like to call tectonic. For the resemblance and then against the difference, for the repetition and then against the difference. Thoroughly enchanting, frequently transcendental release is a part of the library of Laverna. Apex charmer in all-encompassing sense.

Jakapi-Praestholm-Soo – Beek! (2019)

  • Electro-acoustic
  • Avant-garde
  • Electronic
  • Experimentalism
  • Psycho-acoustic
  • Art music
  • Psychedelic
  • Dada music
  • Voice poetry

Comment: this set of 7 compositions is a collaborative act between two Estonian daring musicians and a Danish experimental/jazz stamina which in general reflects much upon pessimistic tendencies which may be considered a purgatorial outlet for recent dead-end music situation. Given that the human species` over-commitment to progress and coming around to an unjustifiable belief in endless development and presumable causal moral enhancement will have ended nowhere but a bad-looking crisis in pop music then dada and Tzara and their method of weird and wonderful is going to bail out. On the other side, by regarding the recent situation in pop music I guess the trio is having much more objects to deal with rather than providing spot on the superficial and lifeless tendency. The slightest inclination toward it may be a deconstructive or destructive act against it. The first of them is a hidden violent and the second one is an overtly violent act against the sonic brouhaha, respectively. It is quite strange of how such sort of music can put things into a boned perspective – it is predominantly led by Roomet Jakapi`s vocal trickery (whose main occupation is philosophy being penchant for topics of the early modern period). Niels Praestholm and Mart Soo provide mostly an electro-acoustic staccato background imbued with squeaks, creaks, screeches, skronks, and squalls. The whole does not feed into a rigorous concept but instead of coming up with playful, even psychedelic strokes. The decorous vanguard outing is a part of the discography of an Estonian imprint, Improtest.

Comment: first of all, it is a sort of album a few used to create today. Back in the beginning of the 10s then it was the case as this 11-track outing proves to show off. Stoned vocal bits and the guitars fed back from a rehearsal room with galvanized acidic keyboard madness do make up an unforgettable event especially if you think of Ty Segall`s albums as way too polished ones. Its muddy soundscape and hazy delineations between the instruments remind of CAN`s less known improvisations (such kinds of having been summoned on Lost Tapes), and artists from such an imprint from the 80s as Bob Chaos. Kровавый дуэлянт and the last two tracks provide a consummate spaced-out ecstasy. Fabulous shit in its endless iteration and frantic discordant blowup even if the formula of it is quite simple – just take ordinary modelling on the structure and then crank up the volume to the brim. I would like to call it art punk due to having motorik and spaced-out intensifiers within but I cannot do it regarding its absolutely nihilistic, rejecting attitude toward everything (maybe it is the pure case of art considering the last implicit thinking way). If I am true both the artist and an imprint, Pikkalma, come out of Perm, Russia.

Bear in Miniature – Lettres à une rose (2018)

  • Electronic
  • Modern classical
  • Epic
  • Field recording
  • Ambient
  • Post-classical
  • Art music
  • Musique concréte
  • Minimalism

Comment: this batch of 3 tracks composed by a Brazilian, Rafael Torres, represents itself through ethereal vowel effects and synthesised spherical string sections which have enough time and much space around to move on and provide different exquisite consummations for our pleasure. At times it is embellished with watery iterative piano chords and panned with suggestive concrete sounds which like a partial foundation on it constitute phat patterns in sound and tempo. In fact, the description of mine is way too linear, way too one-dimensional by let blotted out the true nature of this wondrous issue being released on Spheredelic Records. It is like using the second derivation (the words) to describe the first derivation (the music) on describing the beauty of the Nature. Far out! The opening track L'esprit de l'ange chimes like a series of still extracted from a lightning-spiked evening which is imbued with tangible sultriness and palpable dampness. The abovementioned iterative piano keys sound almost psychedelically and definitely ennoblingly at the same time thanks to the compelling groove within. Excelente!

Mechanimal – Crux (2020)

  • Gothic rock
  • Electronic
  • Rap
  • Minimal wave
  • EBM
  • Post-punk
  • Neoclassical
  • Electro pop
  • Industrial rock

Comment: after the very first listening of this 10-track album (On Inner Ear Records) I ceased to consider the album due to the impression of being the bride on a wedding and the dead person on a funeral. More profoundly, these tracks seemed to cover different styles yet showcasing their nature by numbers. However, by starting listening to it a month later my opinion would have changed since then. Of course, the opening track Ghetto Level, as the title already says, cannot be nothing more but ridiculous. OK, a little bit ridiculous. It would have been cooperated by MC Ride to bring more credibility to the otherwise convincingly composed track. On the other side, the following stuff is solid – it mostly ploughs the field of gothic/post-punk field with a strong electronic flavour (such derivatives of post-punk as EBM, synthwave, cold wave, minimal synth/wave are solely and intertwined represented over there). The whole contains a couple of gems within – Easy Dead is all about compelling guitar looming and suggestive chanting about easy phenomena in our lifes. Indeed, we are nothing more but to be inclined towards the dust and ashes. We are obsessed with it. In general, the guitar treatments are solidly built throughout the album. Razor Tube is a remake of Kraftwerk with hints at early Kraftwerk (with more motorik grooves which later would get transformed into the essence of Neu!) and classical, electro and techno-induced Kraftwerk. Hospital of the Storm is a thoughtful track where menacing chanting is backed up by exquisite guitar chords, electronic wobbles and lone yet stomping drumming. La Poverina Della Ossa is the most immersive composition being accompanied by a slightly orchestrated chamber/neoclassical number. In a word, this release would be a great addition in the luggage of a EBM/industrial/synth-pop preferring DJ. Additionally to its intrinsic value it used to touch important points to me like The Fall (especially the 90s when MES and his accompanying backups would transform more electronic; also Lycia, Current 93, and Death In June).

Elpha – No Blue (2020)

  • Neoclassical
  • Micronoise
  • Sound art
  • Avant-garde
  • Dark wave
  • Electronic music
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Experimentalism
  • Vaporwave

Comment: this handful of tracks comes out from an imprint, Encadre being composed by Takefumi Naoshima. It is an intriguing outing because of consisting of lightweight white noises and hisses like Tim Hecker`s first outstanding aurora borealis inspired albums (from Haunt Me Haunt Me Do It Again to Mirages) and on the other side it is headed by murky piano chords in the vein of neoclassical/dark wave aesthetics. Thirdly, it is also underpinned by electro-acoustic techniques a la pounding echoes, austere metallic reverberations and even sustained buried guitar feedbacks which are traded for refracted structure changes for a few seconds only. The sort of dodges introduce some vaporwave feel either from getting us from a remote natural landscape to a decayed civilisation. Superb work in any cases.

  • Post-punk
  • Singer-songwriter
  • Cover
  • Alternative rock
  • Indie rock
  • Gothic rock
  • Deathrock

Comment: first of all, this album of handful of tracks is adorned with a fabulous cover print depicting a girl being embellished with a snake tattoo and obviously following a (Neo-)Pagan religion. It may be the girl depicted on the cover print is Cécile Raynaud who is one and the only behind this project. She has issued a couple of EPs under the Paris-based Zorch Factory Records. One of them is Whisper which showcases her ability to pull out convincing goth and desert-inspired compositions with galvanised guitar pounding and tortured appeal of singing. Her timbre and singing manner and (prepared) guitar signature remind of Kim Gordon, and Sonic Youth, respectively. In general, Whisper can be considered an exquisite bridge (or outlet) between the Francophone-centered coldwave and a more experimental approach. One track is her take on a My Bloody Valentine`s classic, Only Shallow by adding more electronic effects to the classic of sliding guitars played through a keyboard/sampler input. In a word, it is an example of truly convincing girl power, i.e without any childish postures and numb clichès.

BVBEL – VNTIHERO TAPE (2015)

  • Hip-hop
  • Electronic music
  • Sampledelic
  • Vaporwave
  • Drag house
  • Cloud rap
  • Breaks
  • Rap
  • Urban music

Comment: BVBEL comes out of Belgium, the artist who has issued 20 albums in a span of 4 years (2015-2019). VNTIHERO TAPE is in principle – just artificially delineate it – a hip-hop album with inseparable hints at witch house, vaporwave, and VHS fetishism (it probably due to The Ring, a supernatural movie). Thanks to the latter ones the artist is able to sweep away sugary, simplistic vulgarity of machinery and other superficial ingredients of contemporary autotune-induced hip-hop soup. Instead of it one can hear funereal im(mortality), hints at our move towards death and decomposition. On the other side, there is no need to think of it, though, no one cannot blot it out endlessly, especially at the epicentre of the Coronavirus it would be unfit. Girlfriend in a corona, it`s serious, it`s really serious (an episode from contemporary danse macabre, isn`t?). In a word, get real, exploit your time reasonably to create something (the act of creation), take care of yourself and other creatures and Nature as an immanent appearance of the Lord. In fact, there is no need to get involved in such a (nominal) hogwash as the discussion about Jordan Peterson of being a philosopher or not. What`s the point? There is also no reason and no seat of mind to descend into Cioran-alike indifference. Great album by any means. There is the point.

Jan LF Strach – Balearen Kanaren E.P. (2018)

  • Dubtronica
  • Lo-fi
  • Outsider pop
  • RIO
  • Sampledelic
  • Progressive
  • Avant-garde
  • Zeuhl
  • Avant-prog
  • Synth-rock
  • DIY
  • Electronic

Comment: given that the word “stra(c)h” does mean “horror” in most Slavic languages and given that he has been around for years to reinterpret theoretical common sense understanding or prejudice of how a usual music style should sound then I guess the 6-track Balearen Kanaren might ring in a way we have had no comprehension so far. In fact, what are our expectations, what are our understanding of it? Balearic music is obviously depicted as a sort of sunshiny music but LF`s sound is morose, muddy and refracted as if chopped up in a busted-up tape recorder and then the tape pasted anew. One can hear some sort of progressive rock patheticness as if getting it from the body of work of his famous fellow countryman Czeslaw Niemen yet underpinned on behalf of the skulking RIO and Zeuhl scene. Where is the reason and where is an output could someone hint at precisely? You can hear enough electronic and guitar mixed noodling of progressive rock band until it turns either into a bit grating yet carnival-alike easy, humor-infused electronic templates or an unexpected dub-alike undertaking (Neighbourinna). One can find out lots of slight contradictions, conflicts, tensions but we call it playfulness of the game, isn`t? Horrendous playfulness of the game regarding the recent case being released on Underpolen.

Bing Satellites – Breathe - Sleep Music volume one (2018)

  • Ambient
  • Minimalism
  • Microtonal
  • Microsound
  • Epic
  • Abstract

Comment: Bing Satellites is the nom de plume of Mancunian Brin Coleman (also known behind such projects as Ethereal Ephemera, Kowalski Room, The Ambient Visitor, The Lovely Room, Theta Wave Orchestra) who is being known as a musician, producer, filmmaker and imprint owner (BFW Recordings which seems to be defunct now though). As Bing Satellites he has produced music similar to post-shoegaze/electronic shoegaze/indietronic/(neo)krautock artists ((Twilight Sessions Volume Eight (2011), The Dream (2013)), especially in the first half of the 10s, however, his late sound is based on distilled floaty soundscapes which likeably used to shift the listener's perception on time and space and sonorous perception in general. Breathe consists of just one, 79-minute composition which is as beatific as heaven above the clouds. Given that the less is more aesthetic then any turn and additional element to the soundscape brings forth a tectonic change even if it is perpetrated with barren abstract sounds like hums and hisses and electronic snippets stripped away from emotions and moody elements. The more one listens to it the more it turns into an immanent flow of transcendence and Brin Coleman is a best one excelling at. Superb.

Comment: I guess many people today are following as similarly the sites regarding the numbers of Coronavirus as they did before following the sport results of different leagues. The latter one does not include horror additionally to more or less perverse sort of excitement, though. The former one is followed with intention to get information of getting downward or getting permanently upward and upward and upward. Of course, it is relevant to stay at home and reading H.P. Lovecraft, for instance. El Color que cayó del Cielo (The Colour out of Space) consists of a couple of lengthy compositions made up of the storytelling and a murky soundscape backing in up. Slowed-down and warped cellos, awesome cathedral organ-drenched glimpes, merciless glacial flickers which are metastasized with throbbing crackles, quivering electronics and indecipherable vowel units created by Miguel Conejeros aka F600 whose music is to support Mauricio Garrido`s concept in words and visual art by following the formidable, and indirectly misanthropic vision of the horror legend. The indirect misanthropic concept can be interpreted as a downplayed, rather realistic state of human capabilities in a situation of catastrophe. We have no possibility to run away elsewhere. If you have a lot of bread you can buy an indulgence for a flight to Mars. As I said just the indulgence paper. Nothing more to get in a near future. As the same situation as in the Middle Ages (and we call it the Dark Ages, isn`t). We are nothing more than just bare scintillae on the scale of Outer Space. By talking about the virus there is another threat which may be the most subliminal and paralysing – it is not about the biochemical nature and determined pathological pattern of the Coronavirus it is also about the wisdom/singularity and adaptive behaviour of the disease. And if behind it is the Nature as an autarkic whole which woke up from hibernation after the human kind had crossed invisible red thread then what adverse will be happening next? Given that do you remember another classic Solaris by Stanislav Lem? The revengeful ocean as an autarkic whole? Of course, it is just a possibility, however, as possible as God sitting on a cloud or as an inveterate tippler in a bar (at Acid House).  All in all, a superb issue I guess for H.P. would have admitted.

Comment: Warren Hildebrandt continues suggestively reflect upon his beloved Ontario (maybe Canada in general) through dreamy rays of sublime shoegaze and mellow electronica mixed indie pop compositions. If you think of what the hell is going on in this human centered world at the moment then one may go crazy and at least get nihilistic tendencies. The only possible way to get out of this mayhem/the city – the venomous apotheosis of the civilisation which will kill everything eventually). Instead of it one should reflect more upon imminent and beautiful subjects like the glorious nature. Blissful and solemn it is given that all those playful yet solemn shades in the very front between the trees of a forest massive/cathedral and shimmery flickers of a blue lake to arrive at a listener in his/her imagination. The strength of this 10-notch issue is an exquisite amalgamation of lo-fi/bedroom auteurism and high-end production capability which now and then is amplified up to a downright hypnotic reverie (A Softer World, Say Yes To Violence). Indeed, this album represents a sort of escapism but downright otherwise than did shoegaze artists three decades ago. As usual as Foxes In Fiction's albums in corpore the whole is a part of the discography of his own led Orchid Tapes.

    • Electronic music
    • Toytronica
    • IDM
    • Experimental techno
    • Experimental electro

Comment: At Lastfm site of Songraphie it is said they are Ilya & Paul Bocharov, two young Russian producers who enjoy dismantle the structures of electronica cliché…the puppeteers of a toys theatre made of glitches, heavy compressed beats, low frequencies, and an incredible quantity of talent. Secondly, Toys was released on Zymogen, a first-rate Italian imprint being a dwelling place for such artists worldwide as Alessio Ballerini, offthehesky, Muhr, Nicola Ratti, Nicolas Bernier, Simon Trottier, Bacanal Intruder, D`incise, Takeshi Nakamura if to name approximately a half of the roster. From glitched-out electronic incantations and profound ambient looming to mischievous (electronic) folk and soporific fog-drenched modern classical music. Given that it must hint at the presumable quality of the Russian duo`s issue. Indeed, I have no objections at all by enjoying this 9-notch issue where over-reaching combinations in sound and rhythms are adeptly entwined with a tongue-in-cheek attitude. From exquisite IDM glass bead games and churning electro/chiptune gears and enchanting techno explorations to downstroked shuffles and iterative infantile loops which chime at times either in a primitive or funny way. After you have gotten a hand on its dimensions you can admit the outing is a splendid one.

Nine Inch Nails – Slip (2008)

    • Synth-rock
    • Ambient
    • Industrial rock
    • Electronic music
    • Experimental rock
    • Alternative rock
    • Electro-rock
    • Abstract
    • Experimentalism

Comment: I have always experienced a bit discomfort while stumbling upon the term "industrial rock" which is obviously a different case in comparison to "old school industrial", and "post-industrial". It is like an unfitting, unnecessary addition to the natural chain of the last mentioned ones given that free intention being adeptly exploited and wide sonic areas being craftily occupied. Industrial rock, on the contrary, seems like a bloody determined case to come up with some annoying configuration and channelize ideas in a way which might be in contradiction regarding the old school/the dawn of DIY cassette culture and new sonic radicals. In a word, a playful, provocative element got eradicated with a sort of embarrassing pathos through bloated guitars and unsavoury synth sounds (if to compare it to average delicacy of post-punk). In the mid-noughties NIN/Reznor had made some steps aside by releasing a couple of albums for free download and demonstrating sonorously some deviation from the usual sonic backbone. More experiments with dodges into abstract electronica/ambient (999,999, Corona Radiata), and obsessively staring yet ultimately panoramic rock outputs (The Four of Us are Dying). That's great due to the premiss and progressive path of the compositions. The rest of the 10-track issue is just industrial rock by numbers. That`s fine but not as suggestive as more experimental and hypnotic Ghost I-IV used to have.

Comment: this 6-notch issue reminds me somehow of an early childhood while spending my summertime by a grandma when on evenings the train used to bypass at a distance of 4 miles away. There is something secretly buried and unveiled and achingly longing in these drones as if being filtered and phased on physical distance and emotive memories. The Portuguese trio's music interacts perfectly with the emotive side of a listener due to changing adeptly sounds from still to tumultuous, from silent to moderately penetrative. Beside the fact, the artist used to catch the attention on changing intervals between disparate intense sonic impulses and effects. It is truly interesting in spite of its slightly austere content. One can see elements coming inside out, and vice versa. The blissful outing on artistic terms is a part of the library of an imprint from the Netherlands, Moving Furniture Records (being a home for such feted artists as Merzbow, Machinefabriek, Frans de Waard among others). For Haarvöl, for sure, it is virtually the domestic records today. The trio will soon have issued a brand new one, Ridge Of Humming Spoils. On 24th of April 2020 on Moving Furniture Records.

Comment: Nac/Hut Report is an uncompromising duo from Poland whose intention is to explore intrinsic value of noise rock and improvised noise. If you think of Sonic Youth and especially their more experimental offshoot projects and collaborations then you could properly imagine it. Abrasive guitar noises and spasmodic squalls are incessantly varied with sublime yet more or less oppressed melodies and broken harmonies – due to reminding of the main idea of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. At the same time those melodies used to get vivid thanks to harmonies created by Brigitte Roussell's sensual murmurs and vowel effects. Is it powerful sex or just a restrained seedy caress? Throughout the 9-notch course this is the main knot which is about to produce swirling energy, bitter sweat, bittersweet pain and lucid nightmares squaring off in the middle of a deafening hell. The astounding issue is a part of the discography of Crunchy Human Children. One of the most preeminent albums in the new decade.
