Baradit – Electro Lines (2017)

  • Ambient pop
  • Electronic music
  • Synthwave
  • Alternative
  • Krautrock
  • Electro pop
  • Crossover
  • Yacht pop

Comment: it is great pleasure to be back again at the discography of a Chilean quality imprint, Pueblo Nuevo. Baradit's 9-notch issue is a fabulous blend of futuristic funky rhythms with gleaming shades and smouldering downtempo vibrations and decelerated ambient echoes. Moreover, one can hear iterative, motorik rhythmic structures and minimalist progressions which remind of Neu!, and an early Kraftwerk. At times it is highly moody and sunshiny, for example, at Crita, resembling strongly yacht pop drives. And of course, there are also represented electro pop elements but it is a fact of obvious kind that electro pop is represented everywhere in music today. Lots of synths, some guitars, iceberg tinged epic orchestrations, spidery cadences make you feel the whole is somehow special.

Alejandro Rojas-Marcos, David Area & Tomás Gris – Trails (2017)

  • Improvised music
  • Experimental electronica
  • Avant-garde
  • Sound art
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Experimentalism
  • Microsound
  • Microtonal

Comment: lots of noises being variegated with spans of silence and penumbras mixed of them. From noises to silence, and vice versa. From acoustically warped instruments to noise signal generated electronic dodges. At times the compartments are separated, at times they are superimposed to one another. This minimal approach has much in common with music being provided by early pioneers of electronic music of having experiments with such instrument as theremin. This is austere, rigid it is certainly an example of formalism rather than allowing an entrance to emotive music. One of them is operating in front of a clavichord, one of them is generating electronics, and one of them is playing soprano sax, viola, cello, and objects. It could be said, it is an intriguing blend of instruments. It is the course of this 3-notch outing being a bit in the discography of Greece-based Plus Timbre.

Negritage – Greetings from the Planet Dub (2017)

  • Dub
  • Reggae
  • Dancehall
  • Raggamuffin
  • Mood music

Comment: this set of 17 tracks is created by the Argentinian Negritage and their numerous collaborators, and any of the second notch is collaborated by a new artist (Yuuri Bamboo, Christina Polycarpou, Ibel Campbell, Jam York, Sammy Gold, Mandlion, Med Dred, Haji Mike, Eter Dub, and Zion Irie). The whole is related to the reggae music, and its subgenres and derivatives. It can be a fine soundtrack for a sunshiny summertime, for your lazy time, to be ready to do nothing. Just to make some drinks and listen to such a sort of music under sultry sunshine and while thinking of himself/herself as an alien as the (mis)interpretation of human being. Indeed, we as human beings are not here to stay for a long time therefore our duty is fight for truth, peace and love and for a better live, for our children and next generations. That's the chain of reincarnation wherefrom you are not allowed to withdraw. Therefore we are here and everywhere under the eyes of Him. So celebrate the life with its relentless ebbs and tides. It is a formula of life. That`s okay as long as you know. This merry outing is a part of the discography of a Cyprian imprint, Dub-O-Phonic.

SUICIDEFORCE – IYE12 (2016)

  • Hardcore
  • Trashcore
  • Lo-fi
  • DIY
  • Powerviolence
  • Grindcore

Comment: what could be main impulses behind an inclination to commit a suicide? I guess these can be hopelessness, hatred of people and him/herself as a cursed exemplary among them (among the other cursed ones), overwhelming anxiety and distress coming out from an unknown source and falling fatally over one's head. By listening to this short-running 6-notch issue one can feel physically all the aforementioned distresses and inferior state of moods. It reflects upon mental terror in a very direct way. From the start to its very final pier. It does not take care of you it disseminates its paralysing seeds. Because of that, you shall have to be warned, it might not only be a reflection of suicide machine, it might be a suicide machine on its own. By the way, terror is everywhere where stupid bipedals used to walk around. Terror is a native son of stupidity regardless some cynical and evil creatures may be thinking of themselves as wise ones. A monkey is a stupid monkey. This torrent of overmastering anxiety is a part of the discography of In Your Years. It is powerful, it is violent, it is elegantly horrendous.

ʞık – Wormhole (2016)

  • Krautrock
  • Alternative
  • Electronic music
  • Minimal techno
  • Experimental electronica
  • Abstract
  • Minimalism
  • Sound art
  • Kraut-techno

Comment: the press notice of this issue by the home imprint Bump Foot is very short: ʞık (Karl & Karlik) is an experimental improvisational duo from Russia. Wormhole consists of three minimal tracks, although it lasts 45 minutes (the last track is a 32 minute long one). Indeed, the last track is called Einstein who was a German scientist (of Jewish heritage) because he was graduated within the German educational system and being a part of a thought paradigm within the German scientific world of which influence is hard to overestimate. Why I am talking about it because these 32 minutes used to hark back to other German influences in later times in music, more profoundly, in krautrock. Of course, krautrock as a phenomenon was a disparate one ranging from minimal traditional rock instrument driven sound (motorik) to more spaced-out synthesiser based travels (Kosmische Musik) and more abstract, experimental electronic terrains (in theory they can be divided in that way, in practice it is much problematic to do). The latest named compartment being championed by the likes of Conrad Schnitzler, Organisation (a pre-Kraftwerk combo) and Asmus Tietchens can be a home pigeonhole for the Russian duo as well. It is built up on slowly changing sound sculptures, at times quite abstract and austere when music changes into smouldering electricity and vice versa and then providing rhythms and interesting sound effects to give in to more colours, mind-blowing phase shifts and effects. Furthermore, the issue can be considered a vital link between krautrock, and (minimal) techno. In a nutshell, it is a truly solid and arousing outing indeed.

Monkey Warhol – The Darwin LP (2017)

  • Electro pop
  • Alternative dance
  • Electronic pop
  • Electro punk

Comment: after releasing a bunch of EPs in the previous year the oldest human being (and the musician either) - check out the description of him at his Bandcamp site - is back again with the first LP proper. And it is another highly dynamic outing having been listening and reviewed today. More profoundly, this frantic set of accelerated tempos, college pop and pop punk tinged singing and either glimmering or acidic synth pads are adeptly mixed up with a tongue in cheek attitude while avoiding to be somehow lame, simplistic, annoying, and banal. For instance, Manscaping as a track might have been inferior if it would have been produced without a humorous element. Early Mornin' chimes like a revitalisation of Rednex's goofy country disco. It is followed by Everything Starts With an E being enchanting and danceable at the same time within the soup of glimmering synths and a motorik kraut-electro cadence. If Green Day, or Blink-182 used to sound in the way like I Get What I Want sounds then I would have great interest for their music. The 10-track issue will be finished off by Waiting, an electro pop punk number with catchy hooks and a broad appealing factor. In a word, the album is produced by a creature with a high IQ with regard to music, and humour, and incisive understanding to blend them seamlessly into an one. Top predator by any means.

BESTSELLER + FRONCE de BONQUE - "SPLIT N°3 (2009)

  • Broken beats
  • Alternative dance
  • Electronic pop
  • Post-dubstep
  • Sampledelic
  • Hip-hop
  • Electro pop

Comment: this bunch of 12 compositions is a split release being issued by an intriguing record label, Vaatican Records. Behind the split are FRONQUE de BONQUE, and BESTSELLER, the both of them delivering 6 compositions. There are many ways of how to approach the whole but I would prefer to describe generic mood and appearance of it. Given that the artists' aesthetic is quite similar. First of all, the release came out in the end of 2009 and my proposition is it happened to be ahead of its time. By my opinion it's a sort of pop music though a tricky one. It is filled in with different sorts of broken beats which in turn are (heavily) imbued with digitalised soul music, hip-hop glimpses, slightly haphazard breakbeat torrents, oval-shaped sampledelic art, and even post-dubstep rhythms though the style was not publicised at that time yet. Furthermore, at I Got Your Keys by FRONQUE de BONQUE one can consider it a weird twist of free jazz. Another composition which must be heard is Singapore by BESTSELLER. Very impressive indeed. However, there are no weak compositions on it. These 53 minutes are to have passed by very quickly due to the high rate dynamic flow of exciting bits and beats. Perfect accomplishment.

Rasalasad – Thisturb (2017)

  • Illbient
  • Dark ambient
  • Micronoise
  • Post-industrial
  • Leftfield
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Glitchtronica
  • Neoclassical
  • Drone

Comment: this handful of compositions is somehow eerie and spooky as if depicting an area being devastated either by an enormous catastrophe or horrendous terror. It does not mean these five soundscapes are directly harsh and abusive, vice versa, one can hear slowly droning templates being surrounded by glitched-out bits and gritty noisy frequencies in upper templates. However, there are also represented more harsh torrents to bring forth the contrasted sensibility between it and murky beauty of droning and minimally orchestrated neoclassical segments. The point of mine is all of that is craftily equilibrated within the whole providing either no excessive information or useless and sterile dodges in the sonic terrains thereby avoiding decline in quality with regard to the concept and sound. I am inclined to think off the title "thisturb" refers to disturbing state thereafter (i.e after a catastrophic event). The convincing outing is a part of the discography of Tape Safe.

Trillion Catz – Keep It Real EP (2017)

  • Plinkerpop
  • IDM
  • Post-pop
  • Space pop
  • Krautrock
  • Indietronica
  • Alternative
  • Glitchtronica
  • Experimental rock
  • Avant-rock
  • Electronic music

Comment: this bunch of 4 compositions comes out from such label as Soisloscerdos Netlabel, being the first entry of the imprint into the blog. Trillion Catz is the duo of Michael Nordhagen, and Günter Neumann from Berlin, Germany. Since the start in 2015 they have been especially active in 2017 while releasing three outings, including this 16-minute issue. Musically the duo`s music is a logical sequel to the Düsseldorf-Cologne-Berlin IDM/plinkerpop/indietronica/neokrautrock/post-rock scene of the 90s, to the bands like Tarwater, Mina, To Rococo Rot, Barbara Morgenstern, Contriva, Mouse On Mars, Kreidler, Pluramon. By listening to an instance of kraut-related music it is being an arousing experience to me in almost of cases. Keep is Real EP is the case for sure because it surprises with coherent structural buildup and mind-blowing sounds. Those bass driving dynamic lower parts are embellished with spacious, majestic, at times elliptic synthesised upper templates though at times the beauty is interrupted by glitched-out electronics and sonic effects here and there. I am sure it will be added to the top list of music releases in 2017.

Nilaesh – Gladio (2014/2016)

  • Techno
  • Tekno
  • Acid techno
  • Psytrance
  • Psytekno
  • Electro
  • Crossover
  • Psytechno

Comment: Wolverhampton, UK-based Nilaesh Patel aka Patel`s 5-track issue and 35 minutes are a fatty blend of tekno, electronica, acid techno/house, electro, and on the other side there are clearly represented psy-related elements as psytrance, psytechno, and psytekno. It is a crossover issue being influenced by wild and lysergic warehouse parties of the beginning of the 1990s. It is not surprising at all because Nilaesh Patel started DJing since the mid-1990s. However, his influences seem to be remarkably more wide, for instance, at the opening Mess Around he employs a sample from a shoegaze/indie dance duo Curve`s ditty called Horrohead. It can be said the whole successfully revitalises old traditions both within the rave and psy-related scene because one can hear sublime inner burning and sultry atmosphere throughout the tracks. The great issue is a part of the discography of a legendary Japanese imprint, Bump Foot.

Number Eleven – Autism (2017)

  • Techno
  • Experimental techno
  • Avant-techno
  • Abstract techno
  • Avant-techno
  • Electronic music
  • Industrial techno
  • Post-industrial

Comment: Autism is the Lithuanian artist's fourth outing on Electron Emitter. Autism as a condition (though it is disputable) is considered on a wide spectrum. By its nature it is related to enormous potential and on the other hand it is related to tremendous disability. However, on one peripheral side of the condition is a state called savant. It pertains to human beings who can lead their lives normally yet excelling at languages, and applied sciences with pure mind and also enormous premiss and will to work off. The only shortage related to them is their low capability to be empathetic. In a word, the emotions are something they are not able to understand. Although human beings by the aforementioned characteristics they seem to be quite similar to the definition "robot" in a way. Our society is highly specialised and it will be even more and more. It needs more and more people who are autistic to excelling at doing one operation/action/thing. We do not need the so-called humanists anymore, we need less feelings, at the lowest degree actually; we need more processors, more microscopic chips, more artificial extremities to result in elegantly shaking sleek machines while being productive at the highest degree. The influence of The Smiths`s lyrics will be succumbed. I am not Human and I do not need to be loved (anymore). No, it is not a hate speech, it is the sober calculation. Number Eleven's 11-track outing is robotic in its monotonous routine based on spacious offbeat rhythmic structures and at the same time having the state of mind of getting signals from outer space. One can hear hirsute cadences and elemental electro progressions and noisy sonic chips and eerie shadows and halcyon synthesised upper layers which used to result in an ominous atmosphere. At times some layers are clearly accelerated with regard to the pace of others, at times they are decelerated, at times they produce a sense as if being subjugated to an incisive abrasion. Could it be considered the enhanced disorder as one of the titles suggests? It correlates very well with getting signals from an abyss of outer space. The signals are falling over one's head. Does it mean something good for the human kind or not? Does it mean something altogether? In fact, the story is old and it can be considered a notch from the sequel of Autechre created cerebral techno tradition. However, Number Eleven's approach is to add more neoclassical and post-industrial frequencies to the melting pot in comparison to the legendary Manchester duo. Top notch by any means. Your life is here to be... .

Graphic Antics – What Does It Mean? (2017)

  • Hip-hop
  • Rap
  • Urban music
  • Experimental hip-hop
  • Dream hop

Comment: hip-hop music can be represented in different forms and with disparate intentions. Fortunately we are living today while even mainstream hip-hop is truly intriguing, the recent situation within the urban music is obviously much better than it was 10 years and 20 years ago. Boring gangsta rap is deceased and Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar are producing music which could have been considered a representative of underground hip-hop many years ago. Of course, there have been existed artists whose intention to produce avant-garde music is to use hip-hop music as an instrument for it. For instance, Death Grips, and Dälek are such a sort of artists. Or Flying Lotus whose purpose has been to produce a moody sound. The conglomeration of Ant The Symbol, and Graphic Melee aka Graphic Antics' 14-track outing is a fabulous whole, a fabulous platform to cross the aforementioned tendencies and facets into a coherent whole. It is a truly convincing rapping with dynamic sampling sets where spicy and arrogant attitudes are variegated with more shadowy and cinematic glimpses where one can discern yearning and even pain. Let's call it dream-hop as a style and as a result. The issue is a bit in the discography of blocSonic. A best issue in 2017 so far.

Dolby – Dub:Expo EP (2002)

  • Dub house
  • Dub techno
  • Alternative
  • Electronic music
  • Deep house

Comment: this set of 4 compositions used to excel at dub house (and dub techno in lesser extent) frequencies which happened many years before dubstep appeared to please our mind. However, all those low yet predominantly flowing basses did predict the birth of the style. It is a nice listening experience in a rainy evening while being wrapped up by the deep and charming and warm oscillations. At times the main layer of the basses is embellished with tickling electronic effects and iterative reverberations being so characteristic to dub music. Or a flow of crackling hisses breaks into a layer of the basses to wobble together charmingly. Behind the project is a producer from Leipzig, Germany, Marko Fürstenberg, who is being widely known within the webaudio/netaudio world and the outing is a part of the discography of a cult imprint, Thinner. Glorious vibe.

Kirk Cosby – Dreams In The Absence Of Oxygen (2011)

  • Experimentalism
  • Sound collage
  • Sampledelic
  • Avant-garde
  • Plunderphonics

Comment: these 6 pieces within a 45 minute are up there to unhinge and irritate a listener. Of course, it is a glorious whole made up of original samples though these samples used to come out from very disparate sources. From spoken word ones to more tranquil electronic sounds, moody jazz samples and earnest singing and on the other side you can perceive monotonous drumming and short wave frequencies and austere hiss extractions to be added to this informative melting pot. Of course, mention must be given to other minutiae as well you can hear in the mix. Recently I reviewed The Fucked Up Beat`s brand new one Insomnie which may be similar to it. Especially at Stimuli Unconsciously, and asdf Space you can perceive parallels with it. Otherwise the whole chimes in a more haphazard, in a more convulsive way. It can be described as an instance of disruptive and insubordinate music. From earlier times with regard to the artists it bears a resemblance with the likes of People Like Us, and Ergo Phizmiz. In the absence of oxygene I guess dreams come first for some minutes and then to be ready to die thereafter. But you should relax (by citing one of the phrases from the issue). The tricky outing is a part of the discography of mind-provoking imprint Vaatican Records.

Tante Jules dan Pemuda Inisiatif – For Peace and Togetherness (2010)

  • Indie pop
  • Singer-songwriter
  • Alternative pop
  • Noise pop

Comment: as the title says this set of 7 compositions is dedicated to peace, solidarity, and love. And the lyrics will affirm it. Behind the project are Singapore artist Juliana Yasin and Majalengka, Indonesia-based Jatiwangi Art Factory. Coincidentally I am reading at the moment William Somerset Maugham`s Far Eastern Tales so the idyllic outing used to resonate with it. Indeed, some lyrics are represented in English, and some in a local language (I shall have to apologize for my stupidity). However, music is an universal language so it is my pleasure to understand a subtle stringed accompaniment for a light-hearted singing at times being accompanied by male voices as well. At times gentle flute whiffs and magically sounding melodica based droning are embedded in the gentle singing and calm guitar strums. Only the final track Damaikan Bumi used to employ panoramic noisy guitar dodges, making up the fine resonance for the whole. In a nutshell, it is a lovely issue being part of the discography of Cratediggers.

Schizoid Ops – Gerbil Feed (2012)

  • Dada music
  • Experimentalism
  • Avant-garde
  • Non-music
  • Freeformfreakout
  • Plunderphonics
  • Sound collage

Comment: I can remember for a time when I decided to reverse the tape of The Fall`s dadaist post-punk issue Perverted By Language (1983, Rough Trade) and then listened to it from the beginning to the end. In fact, the result was not more frantic and weird with regard to the original one (being the favourite of mine by them). Schizoid Ops` 7-notch issue is a bit different case though obviously there is something which may remind of it. More profoundly, this issue is based on more and less known pop song structures which are heavily and thoroughly chopped up and warped. And they have done it with great pleasure. Furthermore, the volume level is very unstable, at times it is barely audible and at times it shouts into your ear. I guess the intention of it is to demonstrate its hostile antipathy against the music industry, towards the RIAA, against the established norms in producing mainstream music and representation of it. By its ideological context it is remarkably more enjoyable than by its nihilistic musical approach. The issue is a part of the discography of Eye Machine Recordings.

Sabrina Siegel / Bryan Day / Tom Djll / Bob Marsh – Ocean Of Lakes (2015)

  • Improvised music
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Avant-garde
  • Psycho-acoustic
  • Sound poetry
  • Avant-jazz
  • Experimentalism
  • Free jazz

Comment: in fact, there is much to say about this set of 6 compositions because it is musically and emotionally complex, intense, and mind-provoking. All the music is conjured up by such instruments as kalimba, modular synth, cello, bass guitar, trumpet, voice, and invented instruments (so listen to the issue to figure out the instruments more concretely). It can be said the issue is an fine example of interesting sounds yet all of that will constitute a perceivable whole subsequently. For instance, Sabrina Siegel`s vowel effects and other kinds of sound poetry (additionally I remmond listen to such artists as Maja Ratkje, Jaap Blonk, Roomet Jakapi) used to range from soothing to hirsute, the same could be said about Tom Djll`s synthesiser effects which used to lay over the whole spectre atop, at times changing into something being close to emergency signals. At times it is free jazz with modifications, at times it is more electro-acoustic music with creepy variations, at times the combo enjoys its more silent yet idiosyncratic soundscape being obviously winded from intense sections. Yet its architectural buildup is somewhere between the aforementioned styles. More profoundly, the tempo is slowed down, in fact it is the main approach of determining the pace which is accelerated by spasmodic trumpet whiffs, zigzag acoustic noises and Siegel`s incisive vocal acrobatics now and then. The lower tones are conjured up by a cello, and a bass guitar. The issue is a part of the discography of Pan Y Rosas Discos. As Heraclitus said many thousand years ago that no man ever steps in the same river twice the same could said about the recent one with regard to the perception of it.

Sleeping Policemen – ePop028 (2012)

  • Indie pop
  • Alternative pop
  • Folk indie
  • Twee pop
  • Alt-folk
  • Indie folk

Comment: Sleeping Policemen is a 4-member ensemble from Hamburg, Germany who represent the main line of a record, Eardrums Pop of which choice is based on cute indie/twee pop. I would prefer the term “meadow pop” as if music being produced somewhere in the countryside if people (especially human persons coming out from a city, “civilization”) after running around in the middle of a herd of cattle, and across the meadow and picking flowers and then arrive at a barn in the evening to produce an upbeat music. A contemporary approach to be the hippy. Even if the combo sing about visiting friends in Italy and French philosophy. Such sort of music has been popularised in the Scandinavian peninsula (mostly in Sweden during the 90s, and 00s). So if you are keen to hear such sunshiny, cloudless and careless music then do not hesitate to come close to the discography of the imprint. Yet it does not mean the release is somehow aesthetically second class even if they do not produce hell out of this 4-track outing. Bucolic guitar twangs and female and male mixed singing are wrapped up by cute synthesised strings and reverberant chords. The tempo is up and upbeat. Business as usual with regard to the outings on Eardrums Pop, one of the tracks is a cover version of the combo`s comradeship group Big Ideas` composition Jack Of All Trades. Get it for sure.

Wes Leslie, the Bedroom Player – Bedroom Soul (2017)

  • Soul
  • Alternative pop
  • Singer-songwriter
  • Indie pop
  • Americana
  • Soft rock

Comment: as the title says it is about closeness to bedroom and soul music. Indeed, the San Francisco, California, US-based artist Wes Leslie does not lie at all though there is a gap to interpret the term “bedroom” in different ways. Is it his approach to record music in a bedroom or is it his intention to seduce girls. His soundscape is clear, all parts are segmented and having no specific lo-fi/DIY approach which can be related to. Wes Leslie`s vocal is full of mellow touch and gentle murmurs though lyrically it is a painful yearning for broken relations, ex-girls, and passed memories created together once. So if you have had the similar experience (and of course, you do as a contemporary person, isn`t?) then is painful or at least bittersweet for you as well. At Oh My Golly Gosh especially arouses me due to Leslie is singing with Mae Powell in unison. That`s very sexy. The most important – Wes Leslie is very convincing in all aspects of his music. Calm fingering on the guitar are backed up with sporadic horn sections and orchestrated flavour and hazy electronics adding an appealing Americana touch to the soulful blend. Last but not least – it is an outing for a contemporary listener – it embraces 18 minutes during the course of a handful of ditties. Fairly accomplished.
