Meow Meow vs. Jefflocks - Hard Gaan (2014)

  • Bhangra
  • Alternative dance
  • Drum and bass
  • Jungle
  • Wolrd fusion
  • Crossover
  • Breakbeat

Comment: this 7-piece issue by the Netherlands-based artists is a fabulous example of catchy broken rhythms and vocal delivery. More profoundly, it is relied on highly energized drum and bass and bold jungle paces to provide the background to bhangra stylized singing. At times the whole is saturated with relaxing synth progressions being so characteristic to deep house progressions thereby adding some complexity in structure (infrrrrma fe Dead). However, one can perceive some sublime noises and scattered sub bass frequencies coming out of the maze of the blend of those intensive rhythms and vocal deliveries. In a word, it is a fascinating punch getting your soul and body. Last but not least - it reminds me of cool late teenage listening sessions with music by Asian Dub Foundation, and Fun-Da-Mental in the 90s, The issue is a part of the discogrpahy of a meritorious label, Sociopath Recordings being active since 2006.

Captain Raveman - Quick 'n' Dirty (2013)

8.8

/Breakcore, Jungle, Drill and bass, Crossover, Bhangra, Experimental electronica, Alternative dance/

Comment: these 6 tracks are created by Marlon Beijer aka Negrobeat whose music makes difference due to breaks/jungle-induced rafts, drilling (semi-)noises and even rattling bhangra motives. Indeed, it might be you used to be a little bit dicey about the aforementioned combinations of sound but he has managed it to come off in defined way. All in all, it is a simultaneously danceable and thought-provoking issue for your sake.

Rohstein - Rohstein (2010)

9.3

/Speed garage, Jungle, Breakcore, Club dance, Glitchtronica, Experimental electronica, Breakbeat, Drill and bass/

Comment: this batch of 9 pieces is an intense mix of ominous broken beats, overdriving shifts, and slices of crashing glitchy electronica which are covered with gleaming luster and metallic glaze. It frequently swells ferociously like a tortured example of having gotten inspiration from reggae, ethnic music, house, garage, and hip-hop, Metalheadz-addled in an indirect and somewhat warped way.

Swampyboy - Quasi Horror (2011)

8.7

/Chiptune, Electro pop, 8-bit, Acid, Bitpop, Chipcore, Experimental electronica, Chipbreak, Tracker music, Psychedelic/

Comment: First off, I feel a little shame about the fact that it happened to be the first issue on Sociopath reviewed by me at RMH. However, the UK-based Swampyboy aka Phork (the pseudonyms by Joseph Loney) has been active in music since 2008 having issued a handful of albums (mainly on the Sociopath Recordings, but also on Amenorea, GDTK, and Faceblast). However, this 8-pieced set provides a dense, synergic array of sawtooth-shaped clanging and acid-boiled overdrives-interventions. Indeed, it might be that 8-bit music is the most psychedelic and highly tempered music in the first place. At least I am inflected to perceive in that direction once again.
