Ev3nmorn – Solar Waves (2012)

  • Drag house
  • Witch house
  • Post-whatever
  • Electronic music
  • Alternative

Comment: you could only imagine is it the proper sound of solar waves, the waves which are both deadly and the fountain for life on Earth. This issue of 7 compositions is a part of the so-called witch house/drag house movement which rather is being ominously gothic and glowering yet by listening to the outing it casts lots of shades with bright glimpses and synthesised beams. It might be the artist's sun is thoroughly artificial and unconventionally cold, therefore it could be called the anti-sun, the anti-star. Let's speak some words about the music as well – you could imagine the majesty of Lycia played only on synthesisers though frequently those moments are banged up by poppy tootles and flickering electronic progressions imbued with vocoder drenched and echo filled vocals on the occasion. It was released in 2012 when the witch house/drag house genre was yet very actual. Fairly nice result indeed being a part of the discography of Oddot.

KVLTIK – OKEAN (2012)

/Witch house, Drag house, Newbreed, Dark wave, Synthwave/

Comment: in fact, it is quite puzzling to add something original by describing this 5-track issue. The issue comes out of the era when chillwave music showed signs of withdrawal and instead the witch house/drag house scene was blossoming and spreading its seeds worldwide. The best thing related to the genre was the artists were not ashamed of themselves to cross different genres ranging from abstract electronica and noise to post-punk and shoegaze related elements. Murky synthesised progressions, sinister rhythmic patterns beneath and uncanny Unicode symbol filled titles and names arouse something otherworldly and alien. The movement instigated to cook up weirdly sounding tags and stylisations. KVLTIK is a Russian-based artist whose issue involves emotively nostalgic, even contemplative moments in addition to more aggressive synthesizer induced ebbs and flows. In a word, it could be an example of contemporary house music for contemporary shamans and sensitives. It is fairly decent in its wickedness. The outing is a part of Oddot, the witch house outlet for many artists.

Summer Of Haze - Ω†Р∆ЖΣНИΣ З∆К∆†∆ 8 ΩКН∆Х СƱПΣРМ∆РКΣ†∆

/Electronic pop, Sound collage, Vaporwave, Indie, Ambient pop, Sampledelic, Alternative/

Comment: these 8 tracks are quite easy to digest because of consisting of facile synth progressions, pastel-hued string chords (a la Ducktails or Real Estate) and slight (ambient) pop formats with some hints at field recording/sample based/sound collage music. However, on the other side, it includes a little bit more ominous elements (slowed-down bass lines and vocal layers), though in a lesser extent than the above mentioned elements. Furthermore, the tracks are quite short-running ones (approximately 2 minutes in length) conjuring the feeling of fragmented music. In a word, Summer Of Haze`s album is a decent part of the vaporwave scene.

(((О))) – The Trial (2011)

/Witch house, Avant-electronica, Dark wave, Drag house, Leftfield, Experimentalism/

Comment: The Trial is (((0))`s debut issue on ODDOT includes three tracks (Trial, Josephine, Waiting). The result is a marvellous witch house record because of gritty, bold beats and superficial noises are organically interlaced with haunting synth overtones and other bewitching sonic fabric elements (buried spoken word aspects, crackling electronic layers). The cover print also caress the ear (sorry, the eye). Highly recommended.

(((О))) - Smoke (2011)

/Witch house, Epic, Newbreed, Darkgaze, Drag house, Leftfield, Trianglecore/

Comment: this 6-track issue is a fine example from the pigeonhole of the so-called witch house/drag house music. I am very satisfied with this issue because of providing solemn synth feeling conjured up by tight cathedral organ drones and on the other side it broadens your imagination due to dystopia invoked compositional impulses. Sea incorporates field recording sounds into the mix of hanging synth progressions. The best moment on the album is Night which is profoundly dreamlike, warm and majestic offering the feeling like you are swimming in a pool with the temperature at least 35 C by Celsius.

(((О))) – CHURCHBURN (2011)

/Witch house, Avant-electronica, Gothgaze, Drag house, Ghostgaze, Newbreed, Trianglecore, Hip-hop, Epic, Experimental electronica, Remixes, Darktronica, Post-industrial/

Comment: occult-themed dark synth progressions, disturbingly shifting rhythms and obscure vowel experiments are mixed up with each other throughout 15 tracks. Only the finishing †hroVV y▲ se† in d▲ ▲!r (Cypress Hill Zombie Rave RMX) remix is clearly more hip-hop centred - with catchy rapping and signal-fuelled impulses in the background. The issue involves many highlights due to slowed-down epic synth explorations which seem to be similar to some gloomy shoegaze/dark wave related albums like Treasure by Cocteau Twins, or The Burning Circle And Then Dust by Lycia. Great stuff!
