MoHok + Tokee -- Dark Sun (2023)

Mahorka/Bandcamp

IDM/Modern classical/Electronic/ Downtempo/Martial industrial/ Neoclassical

Ehkki helget külge on siin näha, toimuvad varieeruvused peaasjalikult tumedamas sfääris. Kaasaegse klassikaga teos algab, ent teisest loost alates hakkab muusika elektroonilisse võnkesse vajuma ja vimkasid sisse pilduma. Trikitamine on täheldatav just lugude vahelises võrdluses, kuivõrd lugude siseselt on tulemus suht vähevarieeruv ning kättesaadav. Lemmiklooks on teine lugu, mille meeleheide elektroonilise pulseerimisena meenutab Godspeed You! Black Emperor'i tipphetke nimega "Sleep".

Lisaks nätsukummilikult hüplevatele klubirütmidele, mida avaloos on vürtsitatud kidra akordidega, kuuldub puhtakujulist kammerpoppi – harfi arpedžotesse tungivad kõrgeks keeratud psühhedeelsed ämbientheiastused, mis tõstavad kuulaja kõrgemasse dimensiooni. Loo alguse häälutused toovad meelde Slowdive'i albumi "Pygmalion" maagilised hetked. The Ambient Boogie" on tõepoolest siinne tipphetk. Loos "Imagination" ilmneb My Bloody Valentine'i ja Slowdive'i mõju M83 kaudu. Tõsi, "M83likku" muusikat tehti juba kolm dekaadi tagasi – ärme unusta Slowdive'i teost "5 EP", Chapterhouse'i albumit "Blood Music" ning loomulikult Seefeel'i. Ähmasus ja ambivalentsus, milles samas on tajutav happeks teisendatud tung millegi konkreetse ja maise järele. "Five and Sisters" on kaunikõlaline kussutav viibe kuulajale hüvastijätuks. Neljaloolise on üllitanud Bulgaaria plaadifirma Mahorka.

Midagi lisada? Muusikaliselt on see 6-looline üks lobe elektrooniline nuudeldamine – hoogu on, vaibi on, ka efekte on – peaks eelduste kohaselt tekitama kombatavat frustratsiooni elik ebaõnnestunud proovimisi. Teisalt on selles kalkuleeritud kunstilisust, meenutades ameeriklase Dave Keifer'i aka Cagey House'i ratsionaliseeritud art house-esteetikat. Vaatamata sellele, et trummid aeg-ajalt taovad kõvasti ja kaootiliselt, elektroonilised helid libisevad trajektoorilt välja ning üleüldse süntesaatorid kannatavad füüsilise vägivalla all.

Somnoroase Păsărele – ZEET (2022)

  • Avant-prog
  • Microtonal
  • Avant-garde
  • RIO
  • Ambient

See on uue peremehe positsioon teenijaga suheldes. See on vaid üks düstoopiast kantud fantaasia, ent ilmselt realistlikum kui arvatagi oskame.

Takahiro Mukai – Gently Close The Mouth (2019)

  • Experimental electronica
  • Experimental techno
  • Glitchtronica
  • Abstract electronica
  • Kraut-techno
  • Minimalism

Comment: there has been around one proverb by a nation: speaking can be considered as silver but muteness is gold. Indeed, if you have nothing reasonable to say then gently shut up your mouth and produce something even more beautiful – music. The Japanese artist's 6-notch release is a blissful touch of refined techno rhythms and more abstract pulsations and general electronic explorations. Indeed, minimalism as an approach and methodology is predominant over there. Takahiro Mukai takes enough time within the tracks for himself to fulfil his introverted ideas – indeed, it seems to me that his ideas are directed inside, it is rather contemplative than manipulating overtly with listeners' emotions. On the other side, one cannot exclude different sort of impressions either. He exploits custom-built circuit-bent devices to build up at times abrasive, at times more hushed compositions. There can be drawn parallels upon more abstract and cerebral (meta)-krautrockers like Konrad Schnitzler, and Asmus Tietchens. For instance, #412, and #413 are krautrock-driven though in an indirect sense. Indeed, it is a best part of music if the forms and formats are not taken up directly but using secondary variables and different sorts of extractions. The outing is a bit in the discography of Mahorka.

Slit In Slot – Birthmarks (2017)

  • Micronoise
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism
  • Post-industrial
  • Musique concrète
  • Field recording
  • Ambient
  • Drone
  • Organic electronica
  • Electro-acoustic
  • Acousmatic music

Comment: the more I got into this 10-notch issue by Yavor Grancharov the more I felt some sort of confusion which had fallen over my head. The structures of these compositions used to be complex by using quick transitions from one style to another or just by running multiple stylistic elements at the same time. One can hear spectral human voices coming in from a remote distance while subtle locomotive sounds are set up in front of the listener. In another track an exquisite droning which tends to vary throughout the course is embellished with glitchy shards. And it just goes on and on until it will be finished off sometime without any determination. It is like an antidote to a nowadays human being's life. At times droning gets intensified in volume and in the frequency of chords being meshed with spiky noises and ghostly electro-acoustic clatters from far beyond. Yet it is somehow warm and tempting as if a glimpse into the future, towards futuristic record charts. All in all, it is an overcoming outing in any sense. The issue is a joint release on Mahorka (digital release), and Amek Collective (tape release).

TFSL - Tales From The Sleeping Land (2014)

/Post-rock, Stoner rock, Space rock, Krautrock, Musique concrète, Psych-rock, Drone rock, Avant-rock, Doom rock, Experimental rock, Improvised music/

Comment: this alignment of heavy punching guitar spawned sounds used to create different emotions and sensations in my head. It is more joyous than most of the combos brought forth from the section of doom rock/spaced-out rock. Relatively I did mean. It might be TFSL`s 7-track issue is a less obsessive and more gliding one dedicated not only to survey the listener`s fucked-up state of mind but also providing a placebo to rise up your mind and soul. Let`s call it “the doom or stoner fusion” if you wish. However, the soundscape is powerful and overwhelming by giving only few moments for breathing and extending your muscles throughout a time span of approximately one hour. It is saturated with spacey guitar overdrives and mighty gong sounds to the extreme extent which used to move across the spectrum and penetrate all the layers being discernible on the scale. By now and then additionally to some more tranquil compositions the sonic brew is accentuated with some concrete sounds and signs reflecting upon the de-escalation at some extent. However, all these sounds are seamlessly related to each other or growing out of one another. All of that creates an immensely pleasurable context for your ears generating and unleashing new connections and associations. I am very glad that for a while after the elimination of the Iron Curtain there appeared solid experimental rock scenes in the Eastern Bloc countries. The recent project comes out of Bulgaria. The issue is a part of the discography of Mahorka imprint.

Protuberance – Dimension And Breaks (2013)

/Deep house, Space music, New Age, Psytrance, Big beat, Crossover, Electronica/

Comment: indeed, it can say that the title of Bulgarian Ilevan Iliev`s 7-track issue justifies its name and intention. The album provides the journey through labyrinthine rhythmic plateaus and profound and more light-hearted synth based explorations. The modernity is juxtaposed against old-fashioned sonic appearances (they are rather classic ones, though). More profoundly, genuine spaced-out progressions, spiky rhythmic promontories and proper deep house vibes are laid out to be jettisoned in favour of languid New Age-y progressions and tribal electronic/trance examples (proper ones to be presented at WOMAD either). And vice versa. The favourite track of mine is Solar Corona, a fascinating composition created for completing your space journey. It is a hortative listening for sure.

Esa Ruoho - On The Hangar of Spaceship Earth (2012)

8.9

/Noise, Psycho-acoustic, Abstract, Soundscapes, Acousmatics, Avant-garde, Experimentalism, Ambient drone, Microtonal, Dystopbient, Illbient/

Comment: Finnish musician Esa Ruoho is known as Lackluster in the first place. However, this time he has replaced flourishing IDM-esque propulsions mostly with pessimistic, white and grey coloured industrial soundscapes which in turn are composed of corroded and steel-coated particles. At times it sounds like a tribute to Luigi Russolo (whose rigid music already depicted possible shortages and deficits approximately 100 years ago) due to its incisive noise walls and reverberations. Indeed, these 9 long-running compositions used to slightly throb and change their pitch and shape therefore resulting in an alienated moloch and sinister signs reserved for all of us. More profoundly, by its hints and allusions toward the appearances of industrialization it chimes like a gigantic machine initiated by the human being built to maximize the pleasure of the human kind but unfortunately having no breaks to stop at a time and stay under our control. There is no hope and future. Only the last track Terra drones in a more poppy, psychedelic way like an abstract variant of Spacemen 3/Sonic Boom/Spiritualized. In a nutshell, let`s exploit our free will in relation with a particular moral coercion to change this miserable situation and madness.

Abluonihil - Nova EP (2011)

/Abstract techno, Experimental, Noise, Experimental electronica, Glitch, Avant-garde/

Comment: Renzo Peressi from Venezuela delivers an innovative 4-track EP, named as Nova (entitling it simply and pretentiously). It is cosmic and nihilistic, noiseful and heart-warming having a stunning drift inbetween micro and macrosystems at the same time. It is seemingly primitivistic in its glitch/noise-based developments, on the other side, exploiting dream-filled minutiae in its very favor. It can be imagined as if it were produced by Autechre strongly affected by old school computer games.
